KING JAMES BIBLE KING JAMES 1611 VERSES TO VERSES THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE COMMENTARIE

JESUS IS RISEN

1 AND when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.
2 And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun.
3 And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre?
4 And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great.
5 And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted.
6 And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him.
7 But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you.
8 And they went out quickly, and fled from the sepulchre; for they trembled and were amazed: neither said they any thing to any man; for they were afraid.

JESUS APPEARS TO MARY MAGDALENE
9 Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils.
10 And she went and told them that had been with him, as they mourned and wept.
11 And they, when they had heard that he was alive, and had been seen of her, believed not.

THE APPEARANCE TO TWO DISCIPLES
12 After that he appeared in another form unto two of them, as they walked, and went into the country.
13 And they went and told it unto the residue: neither believed they them.

THE GREAT COMMISSION
14 Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen.
15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

THE ASCENSION OF JESUS
19 So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.
20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.

1 When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary, the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go and anoint him. 2 Very early when the sun had risen, on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb. 3 They were saying to one another, "Who will roll back the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?" 4 When they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back; it was very large. 5 On entering the tomb they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a white robe, and they were utterly amazed. 6 He said to them, "Do not be amazed! You seek Jesus of Nazareth, the crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Behold the place where they laid him. 7 But go and tell his disciples and Peter, 'He is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him, as he told you.'" 8 Then they went out and fled from the tomb, seized with trembling and bewilderment. They said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. 9 When he had risen, early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons. 10 She went and told his companions who were mourning and weeping. 11 When they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe. 12 After this he appeared in another form to two of them walking along on their way to the country. 13 They returned and told the others; but they did not believe them either. 14 (But) late, as the eleven were at table, he appeared to them and rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart because they had not believed those who saw him after he had been raised. 15 He said to them, "Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17 These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will drive out demons, they will speak new languages. 18 They will pick up serpents (with their hands), and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not harm them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover." 19 So then the Lord Jesus, after he spoke to them, was taken up into heaven and took his seat at the right hand of God. 20 But they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the word through accompanying signs.)

v 1-15. While it was still dark Sunday morning, Mary Magdalene, Salome and Mary the mother of James, Joanna and others were bringing sweet spices to the tomb to anoint Jesus’ body when an earthquake hit. They proceeded, wondering how they would roll away the stone from the tomb.

V 6 HE HAS RISEN, AS HE SAID: Six times Jesus predicted his resurrection in Matthew. ( 12:40 16:21 17:9 17:23 20:19 26:32 ) Christian faith is the miraculous fact of Jesus' resurrection. It provides the ultimate proof of Jesus' divinity (JN 10:17-18) The event is a glorification of his humanity, body, and soul. Not a mere resuscitation of Jesus' body before the last Judgment Christ's resurrection anticipate the general resurrection of all people. (Jn 5:28-29 1st Cor 15:20-24 Rev 1:5)

V 18 ALL AUTHORITY: The father gives Jesus full dominion over creation (Dan 7:13-14 Eph 1:19-22) Jesus confers or pass on his authority on to the apostles to preach the gospel and make disciples (27:19) as witness to his resurrection (LK 10:16 Act 2:32 Mt 24:30)

The other disciples outran Peter to the tomb and went in and saw the linen cloth but no body of Jesus.  John 20:4
Coming to the empty tomb and seeing angles, they went into a kind of shock, excitement, and unbelief when they were told that Jesus was no longer there but had risen. As they raced to tell the tell others of what they had seen they became more joyful, fearful, anxiety, wonder and bewilderment.

The guards that had been placed at the tomb to guard it would have seen the angles moving the stone or just the stone moving and possibility saw the angles folding the shroud or just saw the shroud neatly folding itself. This sent the guards into a panic and they fled to report it to the high Priest.  Many would say why Jesus didn’t move it Himself. Jesus’ is the King of Kings and no King would serve Himself. The story of someone stealing the body? Grave robbers would not have stolen the body that was worthless, and leave the Shroud which was worth something.

V 19 GO THEREFORE: God's covenant oath to Abraham is fulfilled with Christ's commission to evangelize and catechize the world. To evangelizing all nation is not winning individuals but winning nations so all mankind follows Jesus.

V 20 I AM WITH YOU ALWAYS: Isaiah's prophetic name for the Messiah "Emmanuel...God with us" (1:23) Christ's ongoing presence in the church is both eucharistic (26:26-28) and ecclesial (18:20)
