Matthew 15

KING JAMES BIBLE KING JAMES 1611 VERSES TO VERSES THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

GOD'S COMMAND OR MAN'T TRADITION?

1 THEN came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying,
2 Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.
3 But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?
4 For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.
5 But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me;
6 And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.
7 Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying,
8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
10 And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand:
11 Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.
12 Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying?
13 But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up.
14 Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.
15 Then answered Peter and said unto him, Declare unto us this parable.
16 And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without understanding?
17 Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught?
18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.
19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
20 These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.

THE FAITH OF A GENTILE WOMAN
21 Then Jesus went thence, and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon.
22 And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil.
23 But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us.
24 But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
25 Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me.
26 But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children’s bread, and to cast it to dogs.
27 And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.
28 Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.

JESUS HEALS MANY
29 And Jesus departed from thence, and came nigh unto the sea of Galilee; and went up into a mountain, and sat down there.
30 And great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus’ feet; and he healed them:
31 Insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see: and they glorified the God of Israel.

JESUS FEEDS FOUR THOUSAND
32 Then Jesus called his disciples unto him, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and have nothing to eat: and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way.
33 And his disciples say unto him, Whence should we have so much bread in the wilderness, as to fill so great a multitude?
34 And Jesus saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven, and a few little fishes.
35 And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground.
36 And he took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and brake them, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.
37 And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets full.
38 And they that did eat were four thousand men, beside women and children.
39 And he sent away the multitude, and took ship, and came into the coasts of Magdala.

1Then came to Iesus Scribes and Pharisees, which were of Hierusalem, saying,

2Why do thy disciples transgresse the tradition of the Elders? for they wash not their handes when they eat bread.

3But hee answered, and said vnto them, Why doe you also transgresse the Commandement of God by your tradition?

4For God commaunded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: And hee that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.

5But yee say, Whosoeuer shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift by whatsoeuer thou mightest bee profited by me,

6And honour not his father or his mother, hee shall be free. Thus haue yee made the Commaundement of God of none effect by your tradition.

7Yee hypocrites, well did Esaias prophecie of you, saying,

8This people draweth nigh vnto mee with their mouth, and honoureth mee with their lips: but their heart is farre from me.

9But in vaine they do worship me, teaching for doctrines, the commandements of men.

10 And he called the multitude, and said vnto them, Heare and vnderstand.

11Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man: but that which commeth out of the mouth, this defileth a man.

12Then came his disciples, and said vnto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended after they heard this saying?

13But he answered and said, Euery plant which my heauenly father hath not planted, shalbe rooted vp.

14Let them alone: they be blinde leaders of the blinde. And if the blinde lead the blinde, both shall fall into the ditch.

15Then answered Peter, and said vnto him, Declare vnto vs this parable.

16And Iesus said, Are yee also yet without vnderstanding?

17Doe not yee yet vnderstand, that whatsoeuer entreth in at the mouth, goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught?

18But those things which proceed out of the mouth, come forth from the heart, and they defile the man.

19For out of the heart proceed euill thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witnes, blasphemies.

20These are the things which defile a man: But to eate with vnwashen hands, defileth not a man.

21 Then Iesus went thence, and departed into the coastes of Tyre and Sidon.

22And behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, & cried vnto him, saying, Haue mercy on me, O Lord, thou sonne of Dauid, my daughter is grieuously vexed with a deuill.

23But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came, and besought him, saying, Send her away, for she cryeth after vs.

24But he answered, and said, I am not sent, but vnto the lost sheepe of the house of Israel.

25Then came she, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, helpe me.

26But he answered, and said, It is not meete to take the childrens bread, and to cast it to dogs.

27And she said, Trueth Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crummes which fall from their masters table.

28Then Iesus answered, and said vnto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it vnto thee euen as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very houre.

29And Iesus departed frō thence, and came nigh vnto the sea of Galile, and went vp into a mountaine, and sate downe there.

30And great multitudes came vnto him, hauing with them those that were lame, blinde, dumbe, maimed, and many others, and cast them downe at Iesus feet, and he healed them:

31Insomuch that the multitude wondred, when they saw the dumbe to speake, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walke, and the blind to see: and they glorified the God of Israel.

32 Then Iesus called his disciples vnto him, and said, I haue compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three dayes, and haue nothing to eate: and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way.

33And his disciples say vnto him, Whence should we haue so much bread in the wildernesse, as to fill so great a multitude?

34And Iesus saith vnto them, How many loaues haue yee? And they said, Seuen, and a few little fishes.

35And hee commaunded the multitude to sit downe on the ground.

36And he tooke the seuen loaues and the fishes, and gaue thankes, and brake them, and gaue to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.

37And they did all eate, and were filled: and they tooke vp of the broken meate that was left, seuen baskets full.

38And they that did eat, were foure thousand men, beside women and children.

39And he sent away the multitude, and tooke ship, and came into the coasts of Magdala.

XXXIX == Mark 8:10

1 Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said, 2 "Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They do not wash (their) hands when they eat a meal." 3 He said to them in reply, "And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God said, 'Honor your father and your mother,' and 'Whoever curses father or mother shall die.' 5 But you say, 'Whoever says to father or mother, "Any support you might have had from me is dedicated to God," 6 need not honor his father.' You have nullified the word of God for the sake of your tradition. 7 Hypocrites, well did Isaiah prophesy about you when he said: 8 'This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; 9 in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines human precepts.'" 10 He summoned the crowd and said to them, "Hear and understand. 11 It is not what enters one's mouth that defiles that person; but what comes out of the mouth is what defiles one." 12 Then his disciples approached and said to him, "Do you know that the Pharisees took offense when they heard what you said?" 13 He said in reply, "Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted. 14 Let them alone; they are blind guides (of the blind). If a blind person leads a blind person, both will fall into a pit." 15 Then Peter said to him in reply, "Explain (this) parable to us." 16 He said to them, "Are even you still without understanding? 17 Do you not realize that everything that enters the mouth passes into the stomach and is expelled into the latrine? 18 But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile. 19 For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, unchastity, theft, false witness, blasphemy. 20 These are what defile a person, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile." 21 Then Jesus went from that place and withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 22 And behold, a Canaanite woman of that district came and called out, "Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is tormented by a demon." 23 But he did not say a word in answer to her. His disciples came and asked him, "Send her away, for she keeps calling out after us." 24 He said in reply, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." 25 But the woman came and did him homage, saying, "Lord, help me." 26 He said in reply, "It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs." 27 She said, "Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters." 28 Then Jesus said to her in reply, "O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish." And her daughter was healed from that hour. 29 Moving on from there Jesus walked by the Sea of Galilee, went up on the mountain, and sat down there. 30 Great crowds came to him, having with them the lame, the blind, the deformed, the mute, and many others. They placed them at his feet, and he cured them. 31 The crowds were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the deformed made whole, the lame walking, and the blind able to see, and they glorified the God of Israel. 32 Jesus summoned his disciples and said, "My heart is moved with pity for the crowd, for they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, for fear they may collapse on the way." 33 The disciples said to him, "Where could we ever get enough bread in this deserted place to satisfy such a crowd?" 34 Jesus said to them, "How many loaves do you have?" "Seven," they replied, "and a few fish." 35 He ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground. 36 Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, gave thanks, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds. 37 They all ate and were satisfied. They picked up the fragments left over - seven baskets full. 38 Those who ate were four thousand men, not counting women and children. 39 And when he had dismissed the crowds, he got into the boat and came to the district of Magadan.

COMMENTARY

MATT 15:21 THE CANAANATE WOMEN'S FAITH
MATT 15:29 JESUS HEALS MANY PEOPLE
MATT 15:32 FEEDING THE FOUR THOUSAND

THE GIFT: The money that should of gone to support their parnets were going to the temple and priests, leaving the parents without, This was a violation of the law of God, because God stated support your parents.

COMMANDMENTS OF MEN: The commandments and doctrines here reprehended are such as are either contrary to the law of God (neglecting parents, under pretence of giving to God,) or at least are unprofitable, frivolous, and no ways conducing to truc piety, as that of often washing hands, etc..., with out regard to the purity of the heart. But as to the rules land ordinances of the holy church, touching fasts, festivals, etc.., these are no ways repugnant to, but highly agreeable to God's holy word, and all Christian piety: Not they proceed from mere human athority; but from that which Christ has established in his church; whose pastors he has commanded us to hear and obey, even as himsefl. Luke 10:16 Matt 18:17

v 10-20. Jesus called the multitude and told them it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles it. but what came out. The disciples were concerned because the Pharisees were offended, but the Pharisees had not been “planted” by God, so Jesus just called them blind leaders of the blind and they would fall (be judged). Peter asked the meaning of the parable. Rebuking them for lack of understanding Jesus explained that what was put in the mouth passed on through, but out of the mouth, from the heart, came evil deeds. We have the potential of bad things from our hearts. God’s thoughts are greater than our thoughts. A similar portion in Mk. 7:14-23. for rest in a private house. Even so a Greek Syrophenician woman found out and came asking Him to cast a demon out of her daughter. Jesus had earlier sent the disciples to Jews, not Gentiles, so He refused, saying it wasn’t right to give the bread of the children (Jews) to dogs (Gentiles). Persistently she begged for just some crumbs from the table, so He commended her faith and told her that the demon was gone out of her daughter. She returned home to find it true and the girl resting. Some of these details are in Mk. 7:24-30.

v 21-28. Jesus immediately left the hostile Pharisees and went into Canaan near Tyre and Sidon

v 29-31. The healing of this deaf mute is only in Mark 7:31-37. Matt.15:29-31 just reports many people being healed. Jesus left Tyre and went 20 miles north through Sidon, and avoiding Galilee, He came to the city area on the east side of the Sea of Galilee. Jesus took the man aside and used sign language, touching the man’s ears and tongue, Jesus showed him how he would be healed. The man could read His lips on “Ephphatha”, revealing that his ears would “be opened”. This fulfills Isa. 35:5, 6

V 32-39. After this massive three days of preaching and healing, people were fasting, weak and food supplies were down to seven loaves and a few small fish. Like in the feeding of 5000, Jesus had compassion on them, had them sit down, blessed the food and had the disciples distribute it to them. This time there were 4000 men plus women and children and 7 baskets full of fragments were left over. In the first feeding, the baskets were wicker and of the size to carry some personal belongings. In this one, the original word is such that they were rope or mat baskets, sometimes large enough to carry a man, so there was more left over this time. Since this was east of the sea, there may have been many Gentiles among them. After the multitude was sent away they got in a boat and went to the west side near Magadan near Tiberias, or as in Mk. 8:10, Dalmanutha.
