PROPHETS PROPHESIED TO OR ABOUT KINGS WHO RULED DURING PROPHET'S TIME APPROX DATES (B.C.)
Isaiah Judah Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, Hezekiah, Manasseh Before Southern Kingdom of Judah Captivity (760-681)
KING JAMES BIBLE

1 THE vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.
2 Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for the Lord hath spoken, I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me.
3 The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master’s crib: but Israel doth not know, my people doth not consider.
4 Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the Lord, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward.
5 Why should ye be stricken any more? ye will revolt more and more: the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.
6 From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment.
7 Your country is desolate, your cities are burned with fire: your land, strangers devour it in your presence, and it is desolate, as overthrown by strangers.
8 And the daughter of Zion is left as a cottage in a vineyard, as a lodge in a garden of cucumbers, as a besieged city.
9 Except the Lord of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah.
10 Hear the word of the Lord, ye rulers of Sodom; give ear unto the law of our God, ye people of Gomorrah.
11 To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the Lord: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats.
12 When ye come to appear before me, who hath required this at your hand, to tread my courts?
13 Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting.
14 Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them.
15 And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood.
16 Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil;
17 Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.
18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
19 If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:
20 But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.
21 How is the faithful city become an harlot! it was full of judgment; righteousness lodged in it; but now murderers.
22 Thy silver is become dross, thy wine mixed with water:
23 Thy princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves: every one loveth gifts, and followeth after rewards: they judge not the fatherless, neither doth the cause of the widow come unto them.
24 Therefore saith the Lord, the Lord of hosts, the mighty One of Israel, Ah, I will ease me of mine adversaries, and avenge me of mine enemies:
25 And I will turn my hand upon thee, and purely purge away thy dross, and take away all thy tin:
26 And I will restore thy judges as at the first, and thy counsellers as at the beginning: afterward thou shalt be called, The city of righteousness, the faithful city.
27 Zion shall be redeemed with judgment, and her converts with righteousness.
28 And the destruction of the transgressors and of the sinners shall be together, and they that forsake the Lord shall be consumed.
29 For they shall be ashamed of the oaks which ye have desired, and ye shall be confounded for the gardens that ye have chosen.
30 For ye shall be as an oak whose leaf fadeth, and as a garden that hath no water.
31 And the strong shall be as tow, and the maker of it as a spark, and they shall both burn together, and none shall quench them.

KING JAMES 1611

1The Uision of Isaiah the sonne of Amoz, which hee sawe concerning Iudah and Ierusalem, in the dayes of Uzziah, Iotham, Ahaz, & Hezekiah kings of Iudah.

2Heare, O heauens, and giue eare, O earth: for the Lord hath spoken; I haue nourished and brought vp children, and they haue rebelled against me.

3The oxe knoweth his owner, and the asse his masters cribbe: but Israel doeth not know, my people doeth not consider.

4Ah sinnefull nation, a people laden with iniquitie, a seede of euill doers, children that are corrupters: they haue forsaken the Lord, they haue prouoked the Holy one of Israel vnto anger, they are gone away backward.

5 Why should yee be stricken any more? yee will reuolt more and more: the whole head is sicke, and the whole heart faint.

6From the sole of the foote, euen vnto the head, there is no soundnesse in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores: they haue not beene closed, neither bound vp, neither mollified with oyntment.

7Your countrey is desolate, your cities are burnt with fire: your land, strangers deuoure it in your presence, and it is desolate as ouerthrowen by strangers.

8And the daughter of Zion is left as a cottage in a vineyard, as a lodge in a garden of cucumbers, as a besieged citie.

9Except the Lord of hostes had left vnto vs a very small remnant, we should haue beene as Sodom, and we should haue bene like vnto Gomorrah.

10 Heare the word of the Lord, ye rulers of Sodom, giue eare vnto the Law of our God, yee people of Gomorrah.

11To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices vnto me, sayth the Lord? I am full of the burnt offerings of rammes, and the fat of fedde beasts, and I delight not in the blood of bullockes, or of lambes, or of hee goates.

12When ye come to appeare before mee, who hath required this at your hand, to tread my courts?

13Bring no more vaine oblations, incense is an abomination vnto me: the new Moones, and Sabbaths, the calling of assemblies I cannot away with; it is iniquitie, euen the solemne meeting.

14Your new Moones, and your appointed Feasts my soule hateth: they are a trouble vnto me, I am weary to beare them.

15And when ye spread foorth your handes, I will hide mine eyes from you; yea, when yee make many prayers I will not heare: your hands are full of blood.

16 Wash yee, make you cleane, put away the euill of your doings from before mine eyes, cease to doe euill,

17Learne to doe well, seeke iudgement, relieue the oppressed, iudge the fatherlesse, plead for the widow.

18Come now and let vs reason together, saith the Lord: though your sinnes be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimsin, they shall be as wooll.

19If yee be willing and obedient, yee shall eate the good of the land.

20But if yee refuse and rebell, yee shalbe deuoured with the sword: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.

21 Howe is the faithfull citie become an harlot? it was full of iudgement, righteousnesse lodged in it; but now murtherers.

22Thy siluer is become drosse, thy wine mixt with water.

23Thy princes are rebellious and companions of theeues: euery one loueth gifts, and followeth after rewards: they iudge not the fatherlesse, neither doth the cause of the widowe come vnto them.

24Therefore, saith the Lord, the Lord of hostes, the mighty one of Israel; Ah, I will ease me of mine aduersaries, and auenge me of mine enemies.

25 And I will turne my hand vpon thee, and purely purge away thy drosse, and take away all thy tinne.

26And I will restore thy iudges as at the first, and thy counsellers as at the beginning: afterward thou shalt be called the citie of righteousnesse, the faithfull citie.

27Zion shall be redeemed with iudgement, and her conuerts with righteousnesse.

28 And the destruction of the transgressours and of the sinners shall be together: and they that forsake the Lord shall be consumed.

29For they shall be ashamed of the okes which yee haue desired, and yee shalbe confounded for the gardens that yee haue chosen.

30For yee shall be as an oke whose leafe fadeth, and as a garden that hath no water.

31And the strong shall be as towe, and the maker of it as a sparke, and they shall both burne together, and none shall quench them.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 The vision which Isaiah, son of Amoz, had concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.

2 Hear, O heavens, and listen, O earth, for the LORD speaks: Sons have I raised and reared, but they have disowned me!

3 An ox knows its owner, and an ass, its master's manger; But Israel does not know, my people has not understood.

4 Ah! sinful nation, people laden with wickedness, evil race, corrupt children! They have forsaken the LORD, spurned the Holy One of Israel, apostatized.

5 Where would you yet be struck, you that rebel again and again? The whole head is sick, the whole heart faint.

6 From the sole of the foot to the head there is no sound spot: Wound and welt and gaping gash, not drained, or bandaged, or eased with salve.

7 Your country is waste, your cities burnt with fire; Your land before your eyes strangers devour (a waste, like Sodom overthrown) -

8 And daughter Zion is left like a hut in a vineyard, Like a shed in a melon patch, like a city blockaded.

9 Unless the LORD of hosts had left us a scanty remnant, We had become as Sodom, we should be like Gomorrah.

10 Hear the word of the LORD, princes of Sodom! Listen to the instruction of our God, people of Gomorrah!

11 What care I for the number of your sacrifices? says the LORD. I have had enough of whole-burnt rams and fat of fatlings; In the blood of calves, lambs and goats I find no pleasure.

12 When you come in to visit me, who asks these things of you?

13 Trample my courts no more! Bring no more worthless offerings; your incense is loathsome to me. New moon and sabbath, calling of assemblies, octaves with wickedness: these I cannot bear.

14 Your new moons and festivals I detest; they weigh me down, I tire of the load.

15 When you spread out your hands, I close my eyes to you; Though you pray the more, I will not listen. Your hands are full of blood!

16 Wash yourselves clean! Put away your misdeeds from before my eyes; cease doing evil;

17 learn to do good. Make justice your aim: redress the wronged, hear the orphan's plea, defend the widow.

18 Come now, let us set things right, says the LORD: Though your sins be like scarlet, they may become white as snow; Though they be crimson red, they may become white as wool.

19 If you are willing, and obey, you shall eat the good things of the land;

20 But if you refuse and resist, the sword shall consume you: for the mouth of the LORD has spoken!

21 How has she turned adulteress, the faithful city, so upright! Justice used to lodge within her, but now, murderers.

22 Your silver is turned to dross, your wine is mixed with water.

23 Your princes are rebels and comrades of thieves; Each one of them loves a bribe and looks for gifts. The fatherless they defend not, and the widow's plea does not reach them.

24 Now, therefore, says the Lord, the LORD of hosts, the Mighty One of Israel: Ah! I will take vengeance on my foes and fully repay my enemies!

25 I will turn my hand against you, and refine your dross in the furnace, removing all your alloy.

26 I will restore your judges as at first, and your counselors as in the beginning; After that you shall be called city of justice, faithful city.

27 Zion shall be redeemed by judgment, and her repentant ones by justice.

28 Rebels and sinners alike shall be crushed, those who desert the LORD shall be consumed.

29 You shall be ashamed of the terebinths which you prized, and blush for the groves which you chose.

30 You shall become like a tree with falling leaves, like a garden that has no water.

31 The strong man shall turn to tow, and his work shall become a spark; Both shall burn together, and there shall be none to quench the flames.

COMMENTARIE

Isaiah means “Salvation of the Lord”. The best known of the writing prophets ministered in Judah during the reign of four kings, about sixty years, 740 to 680 B.C. and saw Israel taken captive and Judah invaded. He speaks of things from creation to the new heaven and new earth. In addition to prophecies about Israel, Judah and the nations, he spoke of Christ’s Birth, 7;14, 9:6; Deity, 9:6,7; Ministry, 9:1,2, 42:1-7, 61:1,2; Death, 52:1-53:12; and Future Millennial reign,  chap. 2, 5, 65, etc. Traditionally he was martyred under Manasseh by being placed in a hollow log and sawed in two. This may have been his first message to the people, and as per custom, it was probably fastened to the door of the temple to be later copied. His later commission directly from the Lord is in 6:9. The phrase “In that day” is found 43 times in this book.

v 1-4. God’s word came to Isaiah in the form of a vision, (the whole book is Divine revelation) and he calls upon all creation to witness to the indictment being laid against Judah for their rebellion and sin in turning their backs on God.

v 5-9. These are the consequences of their sin. They were in desolate need and were beset by enemies around them. They were as defenseless as a hut in a field (common in that time), and except for the Lord’s mercy they would be destroyed like Sodom and Gomorrah.

v 10-15. All the sacrifices, incense burning, ceremonial feasts and observances which God had commanded were an unbearable abomination to Him, because they had been done hypocritically without repentance of sin. Their prayers would not be heard, because they had treated the needy unfairly and were like murderers.

v 16-20. The Lord offered total forgiveness to the repentant, but judgment to those who continued to rebel. The call to reason was not a call to compromise, but a call to let Him show them their need. If they would acknowledge their sin, they could have complete internal cleansing. Obedience would bring blessing.

v 21. The once faithful wife of Jehovah had become a harlot.
v 22,23. Children and widows got no justice because they couldn’t afford bribes.

v 24-26. God was not seeking revenge on His enemies, but was attempting to turn the people back to Him so they might be purified. Verse 26 looks ahead to the yet future kingdom after Israel is restored.

v 27-31. This contrasts redemption of the remnant with the destruction of the sinners. The latter will be made ashamed of their worship of idols. The supposedly strong will be like tinder, and his work like a spark, and they shall burn together in an unquenchable fire.  This probably refers both to destruction by the Babylonians and eternal judgment.
