Daniel 08

KING JAMES BIBLE KING JAMES 1611 VERSES TO VERSES THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE COMMENTARIE

1 IN the third year of the reign of king Belshazzar a vision appeared unto me, even unto me Daniel, after that which appeared unto me at the first.
2 And I saw in a vision; and it came to pass, when I saw, that I was at Shushan in the palace, which is in the province of Elam; and I saw in a vision, and I was by the river of Ulai.
3 Then I lifted up mine eyes, and saw, and, behold, there stood before the river a ram which had two horns: and the two horns were high; but one was higher than the other, and the higher came up last.
4 I saw the ram pushing westward, and northward, and southward; so that no beasts might stand before him, neither was there any that could deliver out of his hand; but he did according to his will, and became great.
5 And as I was considering, behold, an he goat came from the west on the face of the whole earth, and touched not the ground: and the goat had a notable horn between his eyes.
6 And he came to the ram that had two horns, which I had seen standing before the river, and ran unto him in the fury of his power.
7 And I saw him come close unto the ram, and he was moved with choler against him, and smote the ram, and brake his two horns: and there was no power in the ram to stand before him, but he cast him down to the ground, and stamped upon him: and there was none that could deliver the ram out of his hand.
8 Therefore the he goat waxed very great: and when he was strong, the great horn was broken; and for it came up four notable ones toward the four winds of heaven.
9 And out of one of them came forth a little horn, which waxed exceeding great, toward the south, and toward the east, and toward the pleasant land.
10 And it waxed great, even to the host of heaven; and it cast down some of the host and of the stars to the ground, and stamped upon them.
11 Yea, he magnified himself even to the prince of the host, and by him the daily sacrifice was taken away, and the place of his sanctuary was cast down.
12 And an host was given him against the daily sacrifice by reason of transgression, and it cast down the truth to the ground; and it practised, and prospered.
13 Then I heard one saint speaking, and another saint said unto that certain saint which spake, How long shall be the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, and the transgression of desolation, to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden under foot?
14 And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.
15 And it came to pass, when I, even I Daniel, had seen the vision, and sought for the meaning, then, behold, there stood before me as the appearance of a man.
16 And I heard a man’s voice between the banks of Ulai, which called, and said, Gabriel, make this man to understand the vision.
17 So he came near where I stood: and when he came, I was afraid, and fell upon my face: but he said unto me, Understand, O son of man: for at the time of the end shall be the vision.
18 Now as he was speaking with me, I was in a deep sleep on my face toward the ground: but he touched me, and set me upright.
19 And he said, Behold, I will make thee know what shall be in the last end of the indignation: for at the time appointed the end shall be.
20 The ram which thou sawest having two horns are the kings of Media and Persia.
21 And the rough goat is the king of Grecia: and the great horn that is between his eyes is the first king.
22 Now that being broken, whereas four stood up for it, four kingdoms shall stand up out of the nation, but not in his power.
23 And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up.
24 And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power: and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people.
25 And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand.
26 And the vision of the evening and the morning which was told is true: wherefore shut thou up the vision; for it shall be for many days.
27 And I Daniel fainted, and was sick certain days; afterward I rose up, and did the king’s business; and I was astonished at the vision, but none understood it.

1In the third yeere of the reigne of King Belshazzar, a vision appeared vnto mee, euen vnto me Daniel, after that which appeared vnto me at the first.

2And I saw in a vision (and it came to passe when I saw, that I was at Shushan in the palace, which is in the prouince of Elam) and I saw in a vision, and I was by the riuer of Ulai.

3Then I lifted vp mine eyes, and saw, and behold, there stood before the riuer, a ramme which had two hornes, and the two hornes were high: but one was higher then the other, and the higher came vp last.

4I saw the ramme pushing Westward, & Northward, and Southward: so that no beasts might stand before him, neither was there any that could deliuer out of his hand, but he did according to his will, and became great.

5And as I was considering, behold, an he goat came frō the west on the face of the whole earth, & touched not the ground: and the goate had a notable horne betweene his eyes.

8Therefore the hee goate waxed very great, and when he was strong, the great horne was broken: and for it came vp foure notable ones, toward the foure windes of heauen.

9And out of one of them came forth a litle horne, which waxed exceeding great, toward the South, and toward the East, and toward the pleasant land.

10And it waxed great euen to the hoste of heauen, and it cast downe some of the hoste, and of the starres to the ground, and stamped vpon them.

11Yea he magnified himselfe euen to the prince of the hoste, and by him the dayly sacrifice was taken away, and the place of his Sanctuary was cast down.

12And an hoste was giuen him against the daily sacrifice by reason of transgression, and it cast downe the trueth to the ground, and it practised, and prospered.

13 Then I heard one Saint speaking, and another Saint saide vnto that certaine Saint which spake, How long shall bee the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, and the transgression of desolation, to giue both the Sanctuary, and the hoste to be troden vnder foot?

14And he said vnto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred dayes: then shall the Sanctuary be clensed.

15 And it came to passe, when I, euen I Daniel had seene the vision, and sought for the meaning, then beholde, there stood before me as the appearance of a man.

16And I heard a mans voyce betweene the bankes of Ulai, which called and said, Gabriel, make this man to vnderstand the vision.

17So he came neere where I stood: and when he came, I was afraid, and fell vpon my face: but he said vnto mee, Understand, O sonne of man: for at the time of the end shalbe the vision.

18Now as he was speaking with me, I was in a deepe sleepe on my face toward the ground: but he touched me, and set me vpright.

19And he said, Behold, I wil make thee know what shall be in the last end of the indignation: for at the time appointed the end shalbe.

20The ramme which thou sawest hauing two hornes, are the kings of Media, and Persia.

22Now that being broken, whereas foure stood vp for it, foure kingdomes shall stand vp out of the nation, but not in his power.

23And in the latter time of their kingdome, when the transgressours are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and vnderstanding darke sentences, shall stand vp.

24And his power shall be mighty, but not by his owne power: and hee shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mightie, and the holy people.

25And through his policie also hee shall cause craft to prosper in his hand, and hee shall magnifie himselfe in his heart, and by peace shal destroy many: he shall also stand vp against the prince of princes, but he shalbe broken without hand.

26And the vision of the euening, and the morning, which was tolde, is true: wherfore shut thou vp the vision, for it shalbe for many dayes.

27And I Daniel fainted and was sicke certaine dayes: afterward I rose vp and did the kings businesse, and I was astonished at the vision, but none vnderstood it.

1 After this first vision, I, Daniel, had another, in the third year of the reign of King Belshazzar.

2 In my vision I saw myself in the fortress of Susa in the province of Elam; I was beside the river Ulai.

3 I looked up and saw standing by the river a ram with two great horns, the one larger and newer than the other.

4 I saw the ram butting toward the west, north, and south. No beast could withstand it or be rescued from its power; it did what it pleased and became very powerful.

5 As I was reflecting, a he-goat with a prominent horn on its forehead suddenly came from the west across the whole earth without touching the ground.

6 It approached the two-horned ram I had seen standing by the river, and rushed toward it with savage force.

7 I saw it attack the ram with furious blows when they met, and break both its horns. It threw the ram, which had not the force to withstand it, to the ground, and trampled upon it; and no one could rescue it from its power.

8 The he-goat became very powerful, but at the height of its power the great horn was shattered, and in its place came up four others, facing the four winds of heaven.

9 Out of one of them came a little horn which kept growing toward the south, the east, and the glorious country.

10 Its power extended to the host of heaven, so that it cast down to earth some of the host and some of the stars and trampled on them.

11 It boasted even against the prince of the host, from whom it removed the daily sacrifice, and whose sanctuary it cast down,

12 as well as the host, while sin replaced the daily sacrifice. It cast truth to the ground, and was succeeding in its undertaking.

13 I heard a holy one speaking, and another said to whichever one it was that spoke, "How long shall the events of this vision last concerning the daily sacrifice, the desolating sin which is placed there, the sanctuary, and the trampled host?"

14 He answered him, "For two thousand three hundred evenings and mornings; then the sanctuary shall be purified."

15 While I, Daniel, sought the meaning of the vision I had seen, a manlike figure stood before me,

16 and on the Ulai I heard a human voice that cried out, "Gabriel, explain the vision to this man."

17 When he came near where I was standing, I fell prostrate in terror. But he said to me, "Understand, son of man, that the vision refers to the end time."

18 As he spoke to me, I fell forward in a faint; he touched me and made me stand up.

19 "I will show you," he said, "what is to happen later in the period of wrath; for at the appointed time, there will be an end.

20 "The two-horned ram you saw represents the kings of the Medes and Persians.

21 The he-goat is the king of the Greeks, and the great horn on its forehead is the first king.

22 The four that rose in its place when it was broken are four kingdoms that will issue from his nation, but without his strength.

23 "After their reign, when sinners have reached their measure, There shall arise a king, impudent and skilled in intrigue.

24 He shall be strong and powerful, bring about fearful ruin, and succeed in his undertaking. He shall destroy powerful peoples;

25 his cunning shall be against the holy ones, his treacherous conduct shall succeed. He shall be proud of heart and destroy many by stealth. But when he rises against the prince of princes, he shall be broken without a hand being raised.

26 The vision of the evenings and the mornings is true, as spoken; Do you, however, keep this vision undisclosed, because the days are to be many."

27 I, Daniel, was weak and ill for some days; then I arose and took care of the king's affairs. But I was appalled at the vision, which I could not understand.

v 1,2. Two years after his first vision, Daniel has another in which he sees himself in the palace at Shushan, 200 miles east of Babylon. This is where the book of Esther took place, Esther 1:2, and where Nehemiah was the king’s cupbearer, Neh. 1:1.
v 3,4. Like the bear in 7:5, one horn of the ram, Persia rose after Media, but became more powerful. It dominated the land in every direction.
v 5-8. The goat which rapidly and totally dominated the ram was Greece. As soon as it came to power, the horn, Alexander the Great, died and his four generals took over as the four heads mentioned in 7:6,  Macedonia, Syria, Egypt and Asia Minor. Alexander died of malaria and complications of alcoholism at 32 years of age.
v 9-12. This little horn that came up became powerful and lashed out at Israel. He is Antiochus Epiphanies, who offered a sow, desecrating the altar at Jerusalem.
v 13,14. Daniel heard one angel tell another that the cleansing after this act would take 2,300 days before the temple was cleansed and reconsecrated. This can be more properly interpreted 2300 evening and mornings, as in v 26, meaning 2300 sacrifices, 1,150 days. Whichever interpretation is correct, it was literally fulfilled.
v 15-19. Apparently Gabriel stood before Daniel and an angel on the other side of the river told him to explain it to him. Daniel fell on his face in fear, and was told this was for the end time. He aroused Daniel and set him up, repeating it was for the end time. The original meaning was to Antiochus Epiphanies, but this looks beyond that to the Tribulation when the Antichrist will break contract with Israel desecrate the temple and bring 3 1/2 years of terrible persecution upon them such as they have not known.
v 20-22. Medo-Persia the ram and Greece the goat explained v 3-8.
v 23-25. Antiochus l V Epiphanies gained power by murdering his brother. He attacked and burned Jerusalem, killed multitudes, v 10, and forbade following Mosaic laws. He was not only against Israel, he was against God and God caused him to die of insanity in Persia in 163 BC. Again though this speaks of Antiochus, it definitely looks ahead to the Antichrist in his opposition to Christ. He will not be defeated by human military, but by again, by direct intervention of Christ.
See 2 Thes. 3:10; Rev. 8:9-12 and 19:19,20.
v 26,27. Daniel had heard of kings, but didn’t know their names or when these terrible things would take place on his people, and no one else did. The angel implied he should not be concerned about it because it was for a far distant future. He was so exhausted by all this that he was unable to perform his duties for several days.
