PLAGUES OF LOCUSTS, DARKNESS

One of the worst of the plagues were Locusts. They moved in vast clouds eating every green thing in there path. In layers to a depth of 4 or 5 inchs on the ground when repose at night the smell would be unbearable when mashed. Pharaoh's officials beg him to yield on the mere threat. V 7
Darkness: A direct blow at Ra, Egyp's sun-god for 3 days of midnight darkness over Egypt, but light where Israelites dwelt. Again Pharaoh yielded but changed his mind.

KING JAMES BIBLE

1 And the LORD said unto Moses, Go in unto Pharaoh: for I have hardened his heart, and the heart of his servants, that I might shew these my signs before him:

2And that thou mayest tell in the ears of thy son, and of thy son's son, what things I have wrought in Egypt, and my signs which I have done among them; that ye may know how that I am the LORD.

3And Moses and Aaron came in unto Pharaoh, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD God of the Hebrews,How long wilt thou refuse to humble thyself before me? let my people go, that they may serve me.

4Else, if thou refuse to let my people go, behold, to morrow will I bring the locusts into thy coast:

5And they shall cover the face of the earth, that one cannot be able to see the earth: and they shall eat the residue of that which is escaped, which remaineth unto you from the hail, and shall eat every tree which groweth for you out of the field:

6And they shall fill thy houses, and the houses of all thy servants, and the houses of all the Egyptians; which neither thy fathers, nor thy fathers' fathers have seen, since the day that they were upon the earth unto this day. And he turned himself, and went out from Pharaoh.

7And Pharaoh's servants said unto him, How long shall this man be a snare unto us? let the men go, that they may serve the LORD their God: knowest thou not yet that Egypt is destroyed?

8And Moses and Aaron were brought again unto Pharaoh: and he said unto them, Go, serve the LORD your God: but who are they that shall go?

9And Moses said, We will go with our young and with our old, with our sons and with our daughters, with our flocks and with our herds will we go; for we must hold a feast unto the LORD.

10And he said unto them, Let the LORD be so with you, as I will let you go, and your little ones: look to it; for evil is before you.

11Not so: go now ye that are men, and serve the LORD; for that ye did desire. And they were driven out from Pharaoh's presence.

12And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts, that they may come up upon the land of Egypt, and eat every herb of the land, even all that the hail hath left.

13And Moses stretched forth his rod over the land of Egypt, and the LORD brought an east wind upon the land all that day, and all thatnight; and when it was morning, the east wind brought the locusts.

14And the locusts went up over all the land of Egypt, and rested in all the coasts of Egypt: very grievous were they; before them there were no such locusts as they, neither after them shall be such.

15For they covered the face of the whole earth, so that the land was darkened; and they did eat every herb of the land, and all the fruit of the trees which the hail had left: and there remained not any green thing in the trees, or in the herbs of the field, through all the land of Egypt.

16Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron in haste; and he said, I have sinned against the LORD your God, and against you.

17Now therefore forgive, I pray thee, my sin only this once, and intreat the LORD your God, that he may take away from me this death only.

18And he went out from Pharaoh, and intreated the LORD.

19And the LORD turned a mighty strong west wind, which took away the locusts, and cast them into the Red sea; there remained not one locust in all the coasts of Egypt.

20But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, so that he would not let the children of Israel go.

21And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even darkness which may be felt.

22And Moses stretched forth his hand toward heaven; and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days:

23They saw not one another, neither rose any from his place for three days: but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.

24And Pharaoh called unto Moses, and said, Go ye, serve the LORD; only let your flocks and your herds be stayed: let your little ones also go with you.

25And Moses said, Thou must give us also sacrifices and burnt offerings, that we may sacrifice unto the LORD our God.

26Our cattle also shall go with us; there shall not an hoof be left behind; for thereof must we take to serve the LORD our God; and we know not with what we must serve the LORD, until we come thither.

27But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he would not let them go.

28And Pharaoh said unto him, Get thee from me, take heed to thyself, see my face no more; for in that day thou seest my face thou shalt die.

29And Moses said, Thou hast spoken well, I will see thy face again no more.

KING JAMES 1611

1 And the Lord said vnto Moses, Goe in vnto Pharaoh: for I haue hardned his heart, and the heart of his seruants, that I might shew these my signes before him:

6And they shall fill thy houses, and the houses of all thy seruants, and the houses of all the Egyptians, which neither thy fathers, nor thy fathers fathers haue seene, since the day that they were vpon the earth, vnto this day. And he turned himselfe, and went out from Pharaoh.

8And Moses and Aaron were brought againe vnto Pharaoh: and he said vnto them, Goe, serue the Lord your God: but who are they that shall goe?

9And Moses said, We wil goe with our yong, and with our old, with our sonnes and with our daughters, with our flockes and with our heards will we goe: for we must hold a feast vnto the Lord.

10And he said vnto them; Let the Lord bee so with you, as I will let you goe, and your litle ones. Looke to it, for euill is before you.

11Not so: goe now yee that are men, and serue the Lord, for that you did desire: and they were driuen out from Pharaohs presence.

12 And the Lord said vnto Moses, Stretch out thine hand ouer the land of Egypt for the locusts, that they may come vp vpon the land of Egypt, and eate euery herbe of the land, euen all that the haile hath left.

13And Moses stretched forth his rod ouer the land of Egypt, and the Lord brought an East wind vpon the land all that day, and all that night: and when it was morning, the East wind brought the locusts.

17Now therefore forgiue, I pray thee, my sinne onely this once, and intreat the Lord your God, that hee may take away from mee this death onely.

18And he went out from Pharaoh, and intreated the Lord.

19And the Lord turned a mighty strong West wind, which tooke away the locusts, and cast them into the red sea: there remained not one locust in all the coasts of Egypt.

20But the Lord hardened Pharaohs heart, so that hee would not let the children of Israel goe.

21 And the Lord said vnto Moses, Stretch out thine hand toward heauen, that there may be darkenesse ouer the land of Egypt, euen darkenes which may be felt.

22And Moses stretched foorth his hand toward heauen: and there was a thicke darkenesse in all the land of Egypt three dayes.

23They saw not one another, neither rose any from his place for three dayes: but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.

24 And Pharaoh called vnto Moses, and said, Goe ye, serue the Lord: onely let your flockes and your herds be stayed: let your litle ones also goe with you.

26Our cattell also shall goe with vs: there shall not an hoofe bee left behind: for thereof must we take to serue the Lord our God: and we knowe not with what wee must serue the Lord, vntill we come thither.

27 But the Lord hardened Pharaohs heart, and he would not let them goe.

28And Pharaoh said vnto him, Get thee from me, take heed to thy selfe: see my face no more: for in that day thou seest my face, thou shalt die.

29And Moses said, Thou hast spoken well, I will see thy face againe no more.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go to Pharaoh, for I have made him and his servants obdurate in order that I may perform these signs of mine among them

2 and that you may recount to your son and grandson how ruthlessly I dealt with the Egyptians and what signs I wrought among them, so that you may know that I am the LORD."

3 So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and told him, "Thus says the LORD, the God of the Hebrews: How long will you refuse to submit to me? Let my people go to worship me.

4 If you refuse to let my people go, I warn you, tomorrow I will bring locusts into your country.

5 They shall cover the ground, so that the ground itself will not be visible. They shall eat up the remnant you saved unhurt from the hail, as well as all the foliage that has since sprouted in your fields.

6 They shall fill your houses and the houses of your servants and of all the Egyptians; such a sight your fathers or grandfathers have not seen from the day they first settled on this soil up to the present day." With that he turned and left Pharaoh.

7 But Pharaoh's servants said to him, "How long must he be a menace to us? Let the men go to worship the LORD, their God. Do you not yet realize that Egypt is being destroyed?"

8 So Moses and Aaron were brought back to Pharaoh, who said to them, "You may go and worship the LORD, your God. But how many of you will go?"

9 "Young and old must go with us," Moses answered, "our sons and daughters as well as our flocks and herds must accompany us. That is what a feast of the LORD means to us."

10 "The LORD help you," Pharaoh replied, "if I ever let your little ones go with you! Clearly, you have some evil in mind.

11 No, no! Just you men can go and worship the LORD. After all, that is what you want." With that they were driven from Pharaoh's presence.

12 The LORD then said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand over the land of Egypt, that locusts may swarm over it and eat up all the vegetation and whatever the hail has left."

13 So Moses stretched out his staff over the land of Egypt, and the LORD sent an east wind blowing over the land all that day and all that night. At dawn the east wind brought the locusts.

14 They swarmed over the whole land of Egypt and settled down on every part of it. Never before had there been such a fierce swarm of locusts, nor will there ever be.

15 They covered the surface of the whole land, till it was black with them. They ate up all the vegetation in the land and the fruit of whatever trees the hail had spared. Nothing green was left on any tree or plant throughout the land of Egypt.

16 Hastily Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, "I have sinned against the LORD, your God, and against you.

17 But now, do forgive me my sin once more, and pray the LORD, your God, to take at least this deadly pest from me."

18 When Moses left the presence of Pharaoh, he prayed to the LORD,

19 and the LORD changed the wind to a very strong west wind, which took up the locusts and hurled them into the Red Sea. But though not a single locust remained within the confines of Egypt,

20 the LORD made Pharaoh obstinate, and he would not let the Israelites go.

21 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand toward the sky, that over the land of Egypt there may be such intense darkness that one can feel it."

22 So Moses stretched out his hand toward the sky, and there was dense darkness throughout the land of Egypt for three days.

23 Men could not see one another, nor could they move from where they were, for three days. But all the Israelites had light where they dwelt.

24 Pharaoh then summoned Moses and Aaron and said, "Go and worship the LORD. Your little ones, too, may go with you. But your flocks and herds must remain."

25 Moses replied, "You must also grant us sacrifices and holocausts to offer up to the LORD, our God.

26 Hence, our livestock also must go with us. Not an animal must be left behind. Some of them we must sacrifice to the LORD, our God, but we ourselves shall not know which ones we must sacrifice to him until we arrive at the place itself."

27 But the LORD made Pharaoh obstinate, and he would not let them go.

28 "Leave my presence," Pharaoh said to him, "and see to it that you do not appear before me again! The day you appear before me you shall die!"

29 Moses replied, "Well said! I will never appear before you again."

COMMENTARIE

v 1,2. The love of Christ that drew Peter drove Judas to suicide. Two reasons God hardened Pharaoh’s heart. a. That Pharaoh could see these mighty signs of God.  b. Generations of Israelites will be told these things and know that God is the Lord.

v 3-6. Moses and Aaron come boldly into the palace and state the Lord’s  rebuke to Pharaoh for not releasing the Israelites. Then warn that if he doesn’t, the next day God will send a severe plague of locusts which will destroy any thing the hail has not.

v 7. Pharaoh’s staff have had enough of Moses and urged their king to let the Israelites go because their land is already destroyed.

v 8-11. Pharaoh had Moses and Aaron brought back, but accused Moses of having evil in mind to take the children along. He conceded that men only may go and ordered Moses and Aaron driven out.

v 12-15. There have been times in some areas where locusts have darkened the sky by their numbers, but here they are worse than any time before or after. Their appearance and removal are both evidence that this, as well as the other miracles, could not have been mere natural phenomena. They no doubt were chewing every thing of a woody nature. In Depression days grasshoppers would eat your straw hat if you left it outside while you went in for dinner. We would force the handles of our pitch forks into the load so that only the tines were exposed, or when we came back they would be chewed to the point they were difficult if not impossible to use.

v 16-20. In desperation Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron in and again admitted he had sinned. He asks forgiveness “this one time” so that the locusts will be removed, but when they are, he again refuses to let the people go.

v 21-23. DARKNESS UPON THE LAND OF EGYPT, SO THICK THAT IT MAY BE FELT: The Lord had Moses order darkness over all the land of Egypt, but as in all but the first three, the Israelites are not affected. This overwhelming darkness, By means of the gross exhalations, which were to cause and accompany the darkness, where one could only grope without a light, was a rebuke of the Egyptian’s sun god Ra.

v 24-26. Pharaoh finally conceded to allowing all families to go but to leave their flocks and herds behind so they would be willing to come back. He didn’t want to lose this cheap slave labor. Satan would like believers to maintain some attachment to the world.

v 27-29. Pharaoh was angered at not getting his way, and rather than accept the solution, warned Moses he would kill him if he saw him again. Moses welcomed this, because if he didn’t see him again, deliverance was just around the corner. Many Christians have been martyred by those unwilling to accept the salvation offered. Moses’ last words will be given in  11:8, before he leaves Pharaoh in anger.

Plagues Length
10:1 Next day probably - Lord tells Moses of locusts.
10:4,13  Next day - locusts come.
10:16  One day at least - Pharaoh calls in haste for removal of locusts.
10:16  One day - for all locusts to blow away.
10:21-22  Three days - darkness.
10:24-28  One day - Pharaoh orders Moses out and 11,12,13, Passover kept.
10:4   At midnight death angel comes and Israel leaves. Eight days later is Feast of Firstfruits, Lev. 23, when first barley is harvested. It was caught in hail at least 16 days earlier when it was already in the ear. The timing there is reasonable. Therefore this whole period would have had to take a minimum of one and one half months, more likely a minimum of two months. There is no way to speculate how much longer it may have been prolonged by length of a plague or interval between plagues.
