THE BELIEVER'S VICTORY 1 WHOSOEVER believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him. GOD ANSWERS PRAYER |
1Whosoeuer beleeueth that Iesus is the Christ, is borne of God: and euery one that loueth him that begate, loueth him also that is begotten of him. 2By this wee know that wee loue the children of God, when we loue God and keepe his commandements. 3For this is the loue of God, that we keepe his commandements, and his commandements are not grieuous. 4For whatsoeuer is borne of God, ouercommeth the world, and this is the victorie that ouercommeth the world, euen our faith. 5Who is he that ouercommeth the world, but he that beleeueth that Iesus is the Sonne of God? 6This is hee that came by water and blood, euen Iesus Christ, not by water onely, but by water and blood: and it is the Spirit that beareth witnesse, because the Spirit is trueth. 7For there are three that beare record in heauen, the Father, the Word, and the holy Ghost: and these three are one. 8And there are three that beare witnesse in earth, the Spirit, and the Water, and the Blood, and these three agree in one. 9If we receiue the witnesse of men, the witnesse of God is greater: for this is the witnesse of God, which hee hath testified of his Sonne. 10Hee that beleeueth on the Sonne of God, hath the witnesse in himselfe: he that beleeueth not God, hath made him a liar, because he beleeueth not the record that God gaue of his Sonne. 11And this is the record, that God hath giuen to vs eternall life, and this life is in his Sonne. 12Hee that hath the Sonne, hath life; and hee that hath not the Sonne, hath not life. 13These things haue I written vnto you that beleeue on the Name of the Sonne of God, that ye may know, that ye haue eternall life, and that yee may beleeue on the Name of the Sonne of God. 14And this is the confidence that we haue in him, that if wee aske any thing according to his will, hee heareth vs. 15And if we know that he heare vs, whatsoeuer wee aske, wee know that we haue the petitions that wee desired of him. 16If any man see his brother sinne a sinne which is not vnto death, hee shall aske, and he shall giue him life for them that sinne not vnto death. There is a sinne vnto death: I doe not say that he shall pray for it. 17All vnrighteousnes is sinne, and there is a sinne not vnto death. 18We know that whosoeuer is borne of God, sinneth not: but hee that is begotten of God, keepeth himselfe, and that wicked one toucheth him not. 19And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickednesse. 20And we know that the Sonne of God is come, and hath giuen vs an vnderstanding that wee may know him that is true: and wee are in him that is true, euen in his Sonne Iesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternall life. 21Little children, keepe your selues from Idoles. Amen. |

1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God, and everyone who loves the father loves (also) the one begotten by him. 2 In this way we know that we love the children of God when we love God and obey his commandments. 3 For the love of God is this, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, 4 for whoever is begotten by God conquers the world. And the victory that conquers the world is our faith. 5 Who (indeed) is the victor over the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 6 This is the one who came through water and blood, Jesus Christ, not by water alone, but by water and blood. The Spirit is the one that testifies, and the Spirit is truth. 7 So there are three that testify, 8 the Spirit, the water, and the blood, and the three are of one accord. 9 If we accept human testimony, the testimony of God is surely greater. Now the testimony of God is this, that he has testified on behalf of his Son. 10 Whoever believes in the Son of God has this testimony within himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar by not believing the testimony God has given about his Son. 11 And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever possesses the Son has life; whoever does not possess the Son of God does not have life. 13 I write these things to you so that you may know that you have eternal life, you who believe in the name of the Son of God. 14 And we have this confidence in him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us in regard to whatever we ask, we know that what we have asked him for is ours. 16 If anyone sees his brother sinning, if the sin is not deadly, he should pray to God and he will give him life. This is only for those whose sin is not deadly. There is such a thing as deadly sin, about which I do not say that you should pray. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that is not deadly. 18 We know that no one begotten by God sins; but the one begotten by God he protects, and the evil one cannot touch him. 19 We know that we belong to God, and the whole world is under the power of the evil one. 20 We also know that the Son of God has come and has given us discernment to know the one who is true. And we are in the one who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. 21 Children, be on your guard against idols.

COMMATARY v 1-3 This chapter continues love, stresses faith, and makes further comparison between true believers and unbelievers. Anyone who trusts in Jesus as the Christ and Messiah and Son of God is a born again child of God. Belief is not mere intellectual assent. Repentance involves change of view - intellect, feeling - emotion, and purpose - or will. Belief is proven by our conduct. There is a unity of love between the believer, Christ, the Father and other believers. The command to love is no more burdensome than the marriage vow to a couple who love one another. This does not refer to Moses commandments but to preach, witness, walk in light, not forsake assembling etc. |
