KING JAMES BIBLE

1 SIMON Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:
2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;
7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.
8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.
10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:
11 For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
12 Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth.
13 Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance;
14 Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me.
15 Moreover I will endeavour that ye may be able after my decease to have these things always in remembrance.
16 For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
17 For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
18 And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.
19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

KING JAMES 1611

1Simon Peter, a seruant & an Apostle of Iesus Christ, to them that haue obtained like precious Faith with vs, through the righteousnes of God, and our Sauiour Iesus Christ.

2Grace and peace be multiplied vnto you through the knowledge of God, and of Iesus our Lord,

3According as his diuine power hath giuen vnto vs all things that pertain vnto life and godlines, through the knowledge of him that hath called vs to glory and vertue.

4Whereby are giuen vnto vs exceeding great and precious promises, that by these you might bee partakers of the diuine nature, hauing escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

7And to godlinesse, brotherly kindnesse; and to brotherly kindnesse, charitie.

8For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that yee shall neither be barren, nor vnfruitfull in the knowledge of our Lord Iesus Christ.

9But hee that lacketh these things, is blind, and cannot see farre off, and hath forgotten that hee was purged from his old sinnes.

10Wherefore, the rather, brethren, giue diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye doe these things, ye shall neuer fall.

11For so an entrance shall be ministred vnto you abundantly, into the euerlasting kingdome of our Lord and Sauiour Iesus Christ.

12Wherefore I wil not be negligent to put you alwayes in remembrance of these things, though yee know them, and be stablished in the present trueth.

13Yea, I thinke it meete, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stirre you vp, by putting you in remembrance:

14Knowing that shortly I must put off this my Tabernacle, euen as our Lord Iesus Christ hath shewed mee.

15Moreouer, I will endeuour, that you may bee able after my decease, to haue these things alwayes in remembrance.

16For wee haue not followed cunningly deuised fables, when wee made knowen vnto you the power and comming of our Lord Iesus Christ, but were eye witnesses of his Maiestie.

18And this voice which came from heauen wee heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.

19We haue also a more sure word of prophecie, whereunto yee doe well that ye take heede, as vnto a light that shineth in a darke place, vntill the day dawne, and the day starre arise in your hearts:

20Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the Scripture is of any priuate Interpretation:

21For the prophecie came not in olde time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moued by the holy Ghost.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 Symeon Peter, a slave and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have received a faith of equal value to ours through the righteousness of our God and savior Jesus Christ: 2 may grace and peace be yours in abundance through knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. 3 His divine power has bestowed on us everything that makes for life and devotion, through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and power. 4 Through these, he has bestowed on us the precious and very great promises, so that through them you may come to share in the divinenature, after escaping from the corruption that is in the world because of evil desire. 5 For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, virtue with knowledge, 6 knowledge with self-control, self-control with endurance, endurance with devotion, 7 devotion with mutual affection, mutual affection with love. 8 If these are yours and increase in abundance, they will keep you from being idle or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 Anyone who lacks them is blind and shortsighted, forgetful of the cleansing of his past sins. 10 Therefore, brothers, be all the more eager to make your calland election firm, for, in doing so, you will never stumble. 11 For, in this way, entry into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ will be richly provided for you. 12 Therefore, I will always remind you of these things, even though you already know them and are established in the truth you have. 13 I think it right, as long as I am in this "tent," to stir you up by a reminder, 14 since I know that I will soon have to put it aside, as indeed our Lord Jesus Christ has shown me. 15 I shall also make every effort to enable you always to remember these things after my departure. 16 We did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 For he received honor and glory from God the Father when that unique declaration came to him from the majestic glory, "This is my Son, my beloved, with whom I am well pleased."18 We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven while we were with him on the holy mountain. 19 Moreover, we possess the prophetic message that is altogether reliable. You will do well to be attentive to it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. 20 Know this first of all, that there is no prophecy of scripture that is a matter of personal interpretation, 21 for no prophecy ever came through human will; but rather human beings moved by the holy Spirit spoke under the influence of God.

COMMENTARIE

Peter wrote this, perhaps AD 66 or shortly before his death AD 68, probably from Babylon. It was to warn of heresies and apostasy and to strengthen the brethren in Asia Minor to live holy, godly lives in face of great persecution and falsehood.
v 1. To believers not as prominent as Peter, but had the equal privilege of like precious faith in Christ.
v 2. See the Amplified Bible for depth and beauty in this verse.
v 3. God has not only provided eternal life, but has provided every thing we need to live for Him. This introduces the thought to live righteously.
v 4. By use of those provisions, we can share, or become partakers of, His divine nature, and escape the moral decay and the lust and greed about us.
v 5-7. As the Lord sends sunshine and rain but the farmer must plant and tend the crop, so even with those gifts and faith God has given, we need to cooperate in service. Here is a possible sequence of things we are to attend to. They might be arranged as a stair on chalkboard. a. Faith; b.Virtue, moral goodness; c. knowledge, moral wisdom; d. Self control; e. Patience; f. Godliness; g Kindness; h. Love.
8. Allow the Word and the Holy Spirit to develop the potential that is in us, and the above things will be increasing in us and we will grow in knowledge and fruitfulness.
v 9. When believers fail to follow the Lord into a richer experience as suggested, they slip back into spiritual deadness.
v 10. This is not a question concerning losing salvation. Peter, who had denied the Lord that terrible night, knew what was necessary to be developing in the Lord or lose assurance of salvation.
v 11. Entering heaven will be a joy to every believer, but it will be even more abundant to those who walked obediently with the Lord in the face of trials. The works of some others will be burned up, but they will be saved, yet as by fire, 1 Cor. 3:15.
v 12. Some of the truths we hold can become common place and we need to be reminded and stirred up.
v 13,14. Jesus warned Peter of the way in which he would die, Jn. 21:18,19, so with advancing age or threat of martyrdom nearer, he would continue to stir people up.
v 15. By writing these things, people would remember them after his death.
v 16. The gospel was not a fable or hearsay as the Jews and modern critics claim, but Peter was an eyewitness of the King before He entered His kingdom.
v 17,18. Peter personally heard the voice of God honor Jesus on the mount of transfiguration, “This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased, Matt.17:1-5.
v 19. Old prophecies are even more sure as we have seen their fulfillment. We look for the return of Christ, the Day Star, the Morning Star of Rev. 2:28 and 22:16, but until then, we have His illumination in our hearts.
v 20. Not as one person interprets scripture from another person, but scripture must be compared with scripture to get the whole and true picture. Jews did not compare Isa. 11:1 that Jesus would be a Branch (Heb. Netzer or Nazarene) with Mic. 5;2 that He would be from Bethlehem, or that He was born there. Today people use individual verses to dispute the well proven eternal security of the believer, etc.
v 21. No Scripture was written from human impulse, but only as they were moved or the Holy Spirit to write, using their own vocabulary.
