42 The gatekeepers: sons of Shallum, sons of Ater, sons of Talmon, sons of Akkub, sons of Hatita, sons of Shobai, one hundred and thirty-nine in all.
43 The temple slaves: sons of Ziha, sons of Hasupha, sons of Tabbaoth,
44 sons of Keros, sons of Siaha, sons of Padon,
45 sons of Lebanah, sons of Hagabah, sons of Akkub,
46 sons of Hagab, sons of Shamlai, sons of Hanan,
47 sons of Giddel, sons of Gahar, sons of Reaiah,
48 sons of Rezin, sons of Nekoda, sons of Gazzam,
49 sons of Uzza, sons of Paseah, sons of Besai,

55 Descendants of the slaves of Solomon: sons of Sotai, sons of Hassophereth, sons of Peruda,
56 sons of Jaalah, sons of Darkon, sons of Giddel,
57 sons of Shephatiah, sons of Hattil, sons of Pochereth-hazzebaim, sons of Ami.
58 The total of the temple slaves and the descendants of the slaves of Solomon was three hundred and ninety-two.
59 The following who returned from Tel-melah, Tel-harsha, Cherub, Addan, and Immer were unable to prove that their ancestral houses and their descent were Israelite:
60 sons of Delaiah, sons of Tobiah, sons of Nekoda, six hundred and fifty-two.
61 Also, of the priests: sons of Habaiah, sons of Hakkoz, sons of Barzillai (he had married one of the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite and became known by his name).
62 These men searched their family records, but their names could not be found written there; hence they were degraded from the priesthood,
63 and His Excellency ordered them not to partake of the most holy foods until there should be a priest bearing the Urim and Thummim.
64 The entire assembly taken together came to forty-two thousand three hundred and sixty,
65 not counting their male and female slaves, who were seven thousand three hundred and thirty-seven. They also had two hundred male and female singers.
66 Their horses were seven hundred and thirty-six, their mules two hundred and forty-five,
67 their camels four hundred and thirty-five, their asses six thousand seven hundred and twenty.
68 When they arrived at the house of the LORD in Jerusalem, some of the family heads made free-will offerings for the house of God, to rebuild it in its place.
69 According to their means they contributed to the treasury for the temple service: sixty-one thousand drachmas of gold, five thousand minas of silver, and one hundred garments for the priests.
70 The priests, the Levites, and some of the common people took up residence in Jerusalem; but the singers, the gatekeepers, and the temple slaves dwelt in their cities. Thus all the Israelites dwelt in their cities.
v 1-35. People of province of Judah are listed in this register under their ancestor. The Nehemiah is separated by many years from those we are familiar with, but it is possible that Mordecai came, then returned to Babylon. One name must have been dropped from v 2, and Neh. 7:7 properly lists twelve, which is appropriate for the twelve goats offered in Ezra 6:17.
v 36-39. This lists the descendants of named priests. They comprised one tenth of those returning, no doubt for their interest in the center of worship. Nehemiah used these lists 80 years later to establish their lineage.
v 40-54. This is the list of Levites. Amazing how few Levites returned. Possibly their portion had been neglected in recent years, and they were glad to have good jobs and not living at the will of others.
v 55-60. These are descendants of Solomon’s servants. They would include Gibeonites etc. Josh. 9:27.
v 61-63. Those priests whose names could not be found in the registry were of necessity barred from priesthood as polluted. The governor, Sheshbazzar Zerubbabel would not allow them to eat the priests food until they had a priest who could discern the will of God with Urim and Thummim. (A long time if ever.)
v 64-67. The Amplified Testament conveniently gives the number in each of the groups above. Totals were: Congregation 42,360; servants 7337, singers 200; horses 736; mules 245; camels 435; donkeys 6720. The total number of people in v 64 is much higher than adding those in verses 2-42, 58 and 60, but it included women and children and probably some from the northern tribes. It is simple to round it off as about 50,000 returned. Differences between the lists in Ezra and Nehemiah are not significant enough to warrant discussion, but for those interested, a good chart of comparison is found near Neh. 7 in The Bible Knowledge Commentary, Walvoord and Zuck. Much can be explained by the fact that Ezra’s list was made before the people left, while that of Nehemiah was made on their arrival in Jerusalem. Some had changed their minds and stayed, while others decided to go at after Ezra’s list was made.
v 68-70. When arrived at the temple site, the heads of the tribes offered freely in gold, silver and 100 priests garments. Then everyone, including those from the north, all returned to their home cities or what cities may have been assigned to them.
