2 First, Sihon, king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon. His domain extended from Aroer, which is on the bank of the Wadi Arnon, to include the wadi itself, and the land northward through half of Gilead to the Wadi Jabbok,

3 as well as the Arabah from the eastern side of the Sea of Chinnereth, as far south as the eastern side of the Salt Sea of the Arabah in the direction of Beth-jeshimoth, to a point under the slopes of Pisgah.

4 Secondly, Og, king of Bashan, a survivor of the Rephaim, who lived at Ashtaroth and Edrei.

5 He ruled over Mount Hermon, Salecah, and all Bashan as far as the boundary of the Geshurites and Maacathites, and over half of Gilead as far as the territory of Sihon, king of Heshbon.

COMMENTARIE

v 1-6. This is a summary of the conquest of Moses on the east side of the Jordan, which was the land chosen by Reuben, Gad and half the tribe of Manasseh. The south portion had been ruled by Sihon and stretched north 90 miles from the Arnon gorge at about the middle of the Dead Sea to the Sea of Kinnereth. Og’s land extended about 60 miles north of Sihon’s northern boundary, ending near Mt. Hermon.

v 7-24. This is a list of the kings cities which Joshua conquered on the west side of the Jordan, and this land was divided up among the remaining tribes. Verses 9-16 lists sixteen cities of southern Canaan, and v 17-24 lists fifteen cities of northern Canaan. There are a total of 31 cities listed, many which do not figure prominently in later Biblical history.
