1 PAUL, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:
2 Grace unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
3 We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth;
4 So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure:
5 Which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer:
6 Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you;
7 And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,
8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:
9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;
10 When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.
11 Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power:
12 That the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
1Paul and Siluanus, and Timotheus vnto the Church of the Thessaloniās, in God our Father, and the Lord Iesus Christ:
2Grace vnto you, and peace from God our Father, and the Lorde Iesus Christ.
3Wee are bound to thanke God alwayes for you, brethren, as it is meete, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charitie of euery one of you al towards each other aboundeth:
4So that wee our selues glorie in you in the Churches of God, for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that yee endure.
5Which is a manifest token of the righteous iudgement of God, that yee may bee counted worthy of the kingdome of God, for which yee also suffer;
6Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompence tribulation to them that trouble you:
7And to you who are troubled, rest with vs, when the Lord Iesus shalbe reuealed from heauen, with his mightie Angels,
8In flaming fire, taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the Gospel of our Lorde Iesus Christ,
9Who shalbe punished with euerlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power:
10When hee shall come to bee glorified in his Saints, and to bee admired in all them that beleeue (because our testimony among you was beleeued) in that day.
11Wherefore also we pray alwayes for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfill all the good pleasure of his goodnesse, and the worke of faith with power:
12That the Name of our Lord Iesus Christ may bee glorified in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of our God, and the Lord Iesus Christ.
1 Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy to the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: 2 grace to you and peace from God (our) Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3 We ought to thank God always for you, brothers, as is fitting, because your faith flourishes ever more, and the love of every one of you for one another grows ever greater. 4 Accordingly, we ourselves boast of you in the churches of God regarding your endurance and faith in all your persecutions and the afflictions you endure. 5 This is evidence of the just judgment of God, so that you may be considered worthy of the kingdom of God for which you are suffering. 6 For it is surely just on God's part to repay with afflictions those who are afflicting you, 7 and to grant rest along with us to you who are undergoing afflictions, at the revelation of the Lord Jesus from heaven with his mighty angels, 8 in blazing fire, inflicting punishment on those who do not acknowledge God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9 These will pay the penalty of eternal ruin, separated from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his power, 10 when he comes to be glorified among his holy ones and to be marveled at on that day among all who have believed, for our testimony to you was believed. 11 To this end, we always pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling and powerfully bring to fulfillment every good purpose and every effort of faith, 12 that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, in accord with the grace of our God and Lord Jesus Christ.
This was written about 53 AD, shortly after the first letter. The purpose was: a. To correct the idea that the Day of the Lord had come and that the Church was in the Tribulation, and concerning a false letter written as from Paul with new revelation. b. To correct some wrong conduct, 3:11,12; 4:11; 5:14. A chart could be divided to illustrate: 1 Thess. had to do with the Rapture, Christ coming for His Church. 2 Thess. has to do with the Revelation or Day of the Lord, Christ coming with His Church.
v 1,2. Same men - similar salutation as 1 Thess. (Sylvanus, Latin. Silas, Jewish)
v 3. in this verse we see fulfilled Paul’s desire in 1 Thess. 3:10-12 and 4:1,9,10. Their faith and love had abounded and continues to abound. Cp. Ephesus Rev. 2:4.
v 4. Paul commended them in other churches for the faith they had in spite of increasing persecutions and tribulation. Those things make churches grow spiritually.
v 5. Affliction was proof of their faith and their worth to inherit God’s kingdom.
v 6. God, the eternal accountant, will repay tribulation for tribulation to their foes.
v 7,8. They can have release of tension even now, knowing that the day will come when Christ will descend visibly in flaming fire from heaven with His angels to deal out retribution. This could be two groups, those who willfully don’t know God, and those who profess Him but disobey the call to salvation. More likely, the second group further defines the first.
v 9. The time of God’s vengeance is when Christ comes clear to earth.
The person of the avenger is the Lord Jesus Christ.
The recipients of the vengeance are those who have not acknowledged God.
The character of God’s vengeance is everlasting destruction. This does not mean annihilation. It is ruin, forever banished from the presence of the Lord with no recourse, which may be as terrible as the torments of Hell.
v 10. The Lord has no pleasure in the death of the wicked, Ezk. 33:11, but his righteousness demands it. His real desire at His return is to be made more glorious, marveled at and admired by all believers, and His glory will be reflected in them. Not only will we see the King in His beauty, but in the eternal state, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is, 1 Jn. 3:2. He will be glorified in His saints at the Rapture, but even more so, when Christ is seen by the world bringing vengeance at the end of the Tribulation. Thessalonians, among others, will admire Christ, because they believed the message Paul preached among them.
v 11. Paul prayed they would lead lives consistent with their call to salvation so that God would count them worthy. This is not working for salvation, but being worthy of the salvation they have received. Instead of being saved by the skin of their teeth, they would experience all the pleasures of His goodness to glorify Him. Their every action, led by the Holy Spirit, would be motivated by complete reliance on His power.
v 12. Paul’s prayer was that Christ would be fully glorified in these saints, and when that takes place they in turn would be glorified by association with Him.
