KING JAMES BIBLE

1 NOW we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,
2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.
3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
5 Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?
6 And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.
7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.
8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:
9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,
10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:
14 Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.
16 Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace,
17 Comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 We ask you, brothers, with regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our assembling with him, 2 not to be shaken out of your minds suddenly, or to be alarmed either by a "spirit," or by an oral statement, or by a letter allegedly from us to the effect that the day of the Lord is at hand. 3 Let no one deceive you in any way. For unless the apostasy comes first and the lawless one is revealed, the one doomed to perdition, 4 who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god and object of worship, so as to seat himself in the temple of God, claiming that he is a god -  5 do you not recall that while I was still with you I told you these things? 6 And now you know what is restraining, that he may be revealed in his time. 7 For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work. But the one who restrains is to do so only for the present, until he is removed from the scene. 8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord (Jesus) will kill with the breath of his mouth and render powerless by the manifestation of his coming, 9 the one whose coming springs from the power of Satan in every mighty deed and in signs and wonders that lie, 10 and in every wicked deceit for those who are perishing because they have not accepted the love of truth so that they may be saved. 11 Therefore, God is sending them a deceiving power so that they may believe the lie, 12 that all who have not believed the truth but have approved wrongdoing may be condemned. 13 But we ought to give thanks to God for you always, brothers loved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in truth. 14 To this end he has (also) called you through our gospel to possess the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15 Therefore, brothers, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours. 16 May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting encouragement and good hope through his grace, 17 encourage your hearts and strengthen them in every good deed and word.

COMMENTARIE

v 1,2. This refers to Christ’s coming at the rapture. Paul is refuting what someone  had misquoted him or maybe forged a letter in his name. They may have been excited that they would immediately see past loved ones, or more likely upset that they had missed the rapture and been left behind. “Shaken” sudden shock. “Troubled” prolonged concern.
v 3,4. Some good men interpret the Greek “falling away” as “to depart”, and believe this to refer to the Church departing before the man of sin is revealed. However, the Greek word is apostasia, I believe better translated “defection” or “falling away”, Strong's (In classical Greek, political or military rebellion). More likely this is the fall into apostasy, the falling away of people who merely professed to be Christians. Then (after the rapture) the man of sin is revealed. This son of perdition is the Antichrist described in Dan, 9:27; 12:11 and Rev. 13:1-10. This is consistent with Jesus’ teaching in Matt. 24:12 about the love of many growing cold, and 24:15 his quote from Daniel about the abomination of desolation standing up in the holy place. I, like most, take this literally to be the rebuilt temple in Jerusalem. In the early part of the Tribulation this real person will set himself up to be God and demand worship. The son of perdition means his doom is destruction, and does not refer to Judas, Jn. 17:12. Hitler and several others in my lifetime have been accused of being the Antichrist, but time has proven such speculations wrong and improper.
v 5. Paul reminds the people that when he was there he told them these things.
v 6,7. The Holy Spirit has been restraining Antichrist from being revealed until his appointed time has come. After the rapture the Holy Spirit, who dwells in believers, is taken out of the way along with them, and the hidden principal of rebellion that has existed since the time of Adam will be turned loose. Many think the restrainer is the Roman Empire. Obviously not, because it becomes a part of the Satanic organization.
v 8. This need not be confusing. After the rapture Antichrist will be revealed, but it is not till the end of the Tribulation that Christ comes and casts him into the lake of fire, Isa. 11:4; Rev. 19:20.
v 9. Antichrist will be energized by Satan with superhuman power as a counterfeit of the Lord Jesus Christ. However his delusive signs and miracles are fake and deceit. Apparently Judas performed miracles with the 12. In power of Christ, Lk 9:1 or Satan?
v 10,11. All those who have rejected the gospel by rejecting the truth are taken in by this deceit,  but they are already on the road to destruction. God allows them to be misled by Satan’s power of deception because of their rejection.
v 12. So they will be judged and can never be saved. They not only rejected God’s Truth, but enjoyed evil, Jn. 3:19.
v 13,14. Believers are written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, Rev. 17:8, Eph. 1:4, but it is through believing Christ we are saved and sanctified by the Spirit.

v 15. Tradition here is in good sense, the true instructions Paul taught. They should hold firmly to these, whether from his epistles or orally when with them.

v 16,17. Only Christ can give us the encouragement and comfort we need and keep us unswerving in all our words and actions.
