OD'S COMMAND OR MAN'S TRADITION?

1 THEN came together unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, which came from Jerusalem.
2 And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen, hands, they found fault.
3 For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders.
4 And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables.
5 Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands?
6 He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.
7 Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
8 For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.
9 And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.
10 For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death:
11 But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free.
12 And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother;
13 Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.

EVIL COMES FROM THE HEART
14 And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand:
15 There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man.
16 If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.
17 And when he was entered into the house from the people, his disciples asked him concerning the parable.
18 And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him;
19 Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats?
20 And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.
21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,
22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:
23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

JESUS HONORS A SYROPHENICIAN WOMAN'S FAITH
24 And from thence he arose, and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into an house, and would have no man know it: but he could not be hid.
25 For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet:
26 The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter.
27 But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children’s bread, and to cast it unto the dogs.
28 And she answered and said unto him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children’s crumbs.
29 And he said unto her, For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter.
30 And when she was come to her house, she found the devil gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed.

JESUS HEALS A DEAF AND DUMB MAN
31 And again, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis.
32 And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him.
33 And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue;
34 And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened.
35 And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain.
36 And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it;
37 And were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.

27But Iesus said vnto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the childrens bread, and to cast it vnto the dogges.

28And she answered and said vnto him, Yes Lord, yet the dogges vnder the table eat of the childrens crummes.

29And hee said vnto her, For this saying, goe thy way, the deuill is gone out of thy daughter.

30And when shee was come to her house, she found the deuill gone out, and her daughter laied vpon the bed.

31 And againe departing from the coastes of Tyre and Sidon, he came vnto the sea of Galilee, thorow the midst of the coasts of Decapolis.

1 Now when the Pharisees with some scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around him, 2 they observed that some of his disciples ate their meals with unclean, that is, unwashed, hands. 3 (For the Pharisees and, in fact, all Jews, do not eat without carefully washing their hands,keeping the tradition of the elders. 4 And on coming from the marketplace they do not eat without purifying themselves. And there are many other things that they have traditionally observed, the purification of cups and jugs and kettles (and beds).) 5 So the Pharisees and scribes questioned him, "Why do your disciples not follow the tradition of the elders but instead eat a meal with unclean hands?" 6 He responded, "Well did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites, as it is written: 'This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; 7 In vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines human precepts.' 8 You disregard God's commandment but cling to human tradition." 9 He went on to say, "How well you have set aside the commandment of God in order to uphold your tradition! 10 For Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother,' and 'Whoever curses father or mother shall die.' 11 Yet you say, 'If a person says to father or mother, "Any support you might have had from me is qorban"' (meaning, dedicated to God), 12 you allow him to do nothing more for his father or mother. 13 You nullify the word of God in favor of your tradition that you have handed on. And you do many such things." 14 He summoned the crowd again and said to them, "Hear me, all of you, and understand. 15 Nothing that enters one from outside can defile that person; but the things that come out from within are what defile."

16 Verse sixteen is not used.

17 When he got home away from the crowd his disciples questioned him about the parable. 18 He said to them, "Are even you likewise without understanding? Do you not realize that everything that goes into a person from outside cannot defile, 19 since it enters not the heart but the stomach and passes out into the latrine?" (Thus he declared all foods clean.) 20 "But what comes out of a person, that is what defiles. 21 From within people, from their hearts, come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, 22 adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly. 23 All these evils come from within and they defile." 24 From that place he went off to the district of Tyre. He entered a house and wanted no one to know about it, but he could not escape notice. 25 Soon a woman whose daughter had an unclean spirit heard about him. She came and fell at his feet. 26 The woman was a Greek, a Syrophoenician by birth, and she begged him to drive the demon out of her daughter. 27 He said to her, "Let the children be fed first. For it is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs." 28 She replied and said to him, "Lord, even the dogs under the table eat the children's scraps." 29 Then he said to her, "For saying this, you may go. The demon has gone out of your daughter." 30 When the woman went home, she found the child lying in bed and the demon gone. 31 Again he left the district of Tyre and went by way of Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, into the district of the Decapolis. 32 And people brought to him a deaf man who had a speech impediment and begged him to lay his hand on him. 33 He took him off by himself away from the crowd. He put his finger into the man's ears and, spitting, touched his tongue; 34 then he looked up to heaven and groaned, and said to him, "Ephphatha!" (that is, "Be opened!") 35 And (immediately) the man's ears were opened, his speech impediment was removed, and he spoke plainly. 36 He ordered them not to tell anyone. But the more he ordered them not to, the more they proclaimed it. 37 They were exceedingly astonished and they said, "He has done all things well. He makes the deaf hear and (the) mute speak."

v 1-30. THE GIFT: The money that should of gone to support their parents were going to the temple and priests, leaving the parents without, This was a violation of the law of God, because God stated support your parents.

V 24-30 THE SYRO-PHOWNICIAN WOMAN (also told in Matthew 15:21-28) The Phoenicians were of Canaanite descent so in Matthew she is called a Canaanitish women.

This was the same section in which Elijah had been sent to the woman of Serepta (1st King 17:9) It was in a region of Gentles about 50 miles north of Copernaum outside of Jewish Territory. Jesus was only echoing what the disciples was thinking (27) when the word "dog" was used. Her faith humility and persistence won her request.

COMMANDMENTS OF MEN: The commandments and doctrines here reprehended are such as are either contrary to the law of God (neglecting parents, under pretense of giving to God,) or at least are unprofitable, frivolous, and no ways conducing to true piety, as that of often washing hands, etc..., with out regard to the purity of the heart. But as to the rules land ordinances of the holy church, touching fasts, festivals, etc.., these are no ways repugnant to, but highly agreeable to God's holy word, and all Christian piety: Not they proceed from mere human authority; but from that which Christ has established in his church; whose pastors he has commanded us to hear and obey, even as himself. Luke 10:16 Matt 18:17

Jesus called the multitude and told them it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles it. but what came out. The disciples were concerned because the Pharisees were offended, but the Pharisees had not been “planted” by God, so Jesus just called them blind leaders of the blind and they would fall (be judged). Peter asked the meaning of the parable. Rebuking them for lack of understanding Jesus explained that what was put in the mouth passed on through, but out of the mouth, from the heart, came evil deeds. We have the potential of bad things from our hearts. God’s thoughts are greater than our thoughts. A similar portion in Mk. 7:14-23. for rest in a private house. Even so a Greek Syrophenician woman found out and came asking Him to cast a demon out of her daughter. Jesus had earlier sent the disciples to Jews, not Gentiles, so He refused, saying it wasn’t right to give the bread of the children (Jews) to dogs (Gentiles). Persistently she begged for just some crumbs from the table, so He commended her faith and told her that the demon was gone out of her daughter. She returned home to find it true and the girl resting.

Jesus immediately left the hostile Pharisees and went into Canaan near Tyre and Sidon

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

V 31-37 HEALING OF A DEAF AND DUMB MAN The healing of this deaf mute is only in Mark. Matt. 15:29-31 just report many people being healed. Jesus left Tyre and went 20 miles north through Sidon, and avoiding Galilee, He came to the city area on the east side of the Sea of Galilee. Jesus took the man aside and used sign language, touching the man’s ears and tongue, Jesus showed him how he would be healed. The man could read His lips on “Ephphatha”, revealing that his ears would be opened. This fulfills Isa. 35:5,6.
