KING JAMES BIBLE

1 SO Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David: and Asa his son reigned in his stead. In his days the land was quiet ten years.
2 And Asa did that which was good and right in the eyes of the Lord his God:
3 For he took away the altars of the strange gods, and the high places, and brake down the images, and cut down the groves:
4 And commanded Judah to seek the Lord God of their fathers, and to do the law and the commandment.
5 Also he took away out of all the cities of Judah the high places and the images: and the kingdom was quiet before him.
6 And he built fenced cities in Judah: for the land had rest, and he had no war in those years; because the Lord had given him rest.
7 Therefore he said unto Judah, Let us build these cities, and make about them walls, and towers, gates, and bars, while the land is yet before us; because we have sought the Lord our God, we have sought him, and he hath given us rest on every side. So they built and prospered.
8 And Asa had an army of men that bare targets and spears, out of Judah three hundred thousand; and out of Benjamin, that bare shields and drew bows, two hundred and fourscore thousand: all these were mighty men of valour.
9 And there came out against them Zerah the Ethiopian with an host of a thousand thousand, and three hundred chariots; and came unto Mareshah.
10 Then Asa went out against him, and they set the battle in array in the valley of Zephathah at Mareshah.
11 And Asa cried unto the Lord his God, and said, Lord, it is nothing with thee to help, whether with many, or with them that have no power: help us, O Lord our God; for we rest on thee, and in thy name we go against this multitude. O Lord, thou art our God; let not man prevail against thee.
12 So the Lord smote the Ethiopians before Asa, and before Judah; and the Ethiopians fled.
13 And Asa and the people that were with him pursued them unto Gerar: and the Ethiopians were overthrown, that they could not recover themselves; for they were destroyed before the Lord, and before his host; and they carried away very much spoil.
14 And they smote all the cities round about Gerar; for the fear of the Lord came upon them: and they spoiled all the cities; for there was exceeding much spoil in them.
15 They smote also the tents of cattle, and carried away sheep and camels in abundance, and returned to Jerusalem.

KING JAMES 1611

1So Abiiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the citie of Dauid, and Asa his sonne reigned in his stead: in his dayes the land was quiet ten yeeres.

2And Asa did that which was good and right in the eyes of the Lord his God.

3For hee tooke away the altars of the strange gods, and the high places, and brake downe the images, and cut downe the groues:

4And commanded Iudah to seeke the Lord God of their fathers, and to do the Law, and the Commandement.

5Also he tooke away out of all the cities of Iudah, the high places and the images: and the kingdome was quiet before him.

6 And hee built fenced cities in Iudah; for the land had rest, and hee had no warre in those yeeres; because the Lord had giuen him rest.

7Therefore hee said vnto Iudah, Let vs build these cities, & make about them walles, and towers, gates and barres, while the land is yet before vs: because wee haue sought the Lord our God, wee haue sought him, and hee hath giuen vs rest on euery side: so they built, and prospered.

8And Asa had an armie of men that bare targets and speares, out of Iudah three hundred thousand, and out of Beniamin, that bare shields and drew bowes, two hundred and fourescore thousand: all these were mighty men of valour.

9 And there came out against them Zerah the Ethiopian, with an host of a thousand thousand, and three hundred charets, and came vnto Mareshah.

10Then Asa went out against him, and they set the battel in aray in the valley of Zephathah at Mareshah.

11And Asa cried vnto the Lord his God, and said, Lord, it is nothing with thee to helpe, whether with many, or with them that haue no power. Helpe vs, O Lord our God, for we rest on thee, and in thy Name wee goe against this multitude: O Lord thou art our God, let not man preuaile against thee.

12So the Lord smote the Ethiopians before Asa, and before Iudah, and the Ethiopians fled.

13And Asa and the people that were with him, pursued them vnto Gerar: and the Ethiopians were ouerthrown, that they could not recouer themselues, for they were destroyed before the Lord, and before his hoste, and they caried away very much spoile.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 Asa did what was good and pleasing to the LORD, his God,

2 removing the heathen altars and the high places, breaking to pieces the sacred pillars, and cutting down the sacred poles.

3 He commanded Judah to seek the LORD, the God of their fathers, and to observe the law and its commands.

4 He removed the high places and incense stands from all the cities of Judah, and under him the kingdom had peace.

5 He built fortified cities in Judah, for the land had peace and no war was waged against him during these years, because the LORD had given him peace.

6 He said to Judah: "Let us build these cities and surround them with walls, towers, gates and bars. The land is still ours, for we have sought the LORD, our God; we sought him, and he has given us rest on every side." So they built and prospered.

7 Asa had an army of three hundred thousand shield-and lance-bearers from Judah, and two hundred and eighty thousand from Benjamin who carried bucklers and were archers, all of them valiant warriors.

8 Zerah the Ethiopian moved against them with a force of one million men and three hundred chariots, and he came as far as Mareshah.

9 Asa went out to meet him and set himself in battle array in the valley of Zephathah, near Mareshah.

10 Asa called upon the LORD, his God, praying: "O LORD, there is none like you to help the powerless against the strong. Help us, O LORD, our God, for we rely on you, and in your name we have come against this multitude. You are the LORD, our God; let no man prevail against you."

11 And so the LORD defeated the Ethiopians before Asa and Judah, and they fled.

12 Asa and those with him pursued them as far as Gerar, and the Ethiopians fell until there were no survivors, for they were crushed before the LORD and his army, which carried away enormous spoils.

13 Then the Judahites conquered all the cities around Gerar, for the fear of the LORD was upon them; they despoiled all the cities, for there was much booty in them.

14 They attacked also the tents of the cattle-herders and carried off a great number of sheep and camels. Then they returned to Jerusalem.

COMMENTARIE

V 1 There continued to be war with Jeroboam through the three years of Abijah. For more on Abijah, read 2 Chr. 13:1-19. When his 400,000 men were faced with Jeroboam’s 800,000, he took a stand for the Lord. He rebuked Jeroboam for taking advantage of Rehoboam when he was young, for the golden calves, for ousting the priests and setting up common men as priests and perverting commanded worship. Furthermore, Judah was trusting God for it’s captain. When Abijah realized Jeroboam had set an ambush, all Judah called upon God, gave a shout and God delivered them and they killed 500,000 of the enemy soldiers. So Judah prevailed and captured many of the cities of Israel because they had relied on God.   Read 2 Chr. 13: 21 22 for record that Abijah had 14 wives, 22 sons and 16 daughters.

V 2-5 Asa is Judah’s first really good king, and starting in the twentieth year of Jeroboam, he reigned 41 years. Maacah was actually his grandmother, but he did not show partiality. He destroyed the idol she she had made in a grove and removed her from being queen, 2 Chr. 15:16. The groves were Ashera poles set up with fertility symbols (private parts) carved on them. Apparently it was in his early years that he removed the homosexuals and idols from the land. In keeping with Lev. 26:30, he removed the high places, according to 2 Chr. 14:2-5, but there were many and he did not get them all removed, v 14 and 2 Chr. 15:16. He was able to bring in dedicated items from the war Abijah won over Jeroboam and from his own victory over the Ethiopians, God had given Asa rest after his early reforms, so he built fortified cities, a 580,000 man army and prospered. Zerah, an Ethiopian came against him with a million men and 300 chariots. Asa called upon the Lord in trust with a well known verse, 2 Chr. 14:11, the Lord can help with many or with the weak. God aided him in practically destroying the enemy, so Asa smote all the cities round about and brought back an abundance of spoils.
At this point 2 Chr. 15:1-7 takes place.  The Prophet Azariah met Asa, perhaps as he was returning from the battle, and gave him an admonition that if he sought the Lord, the Lord would be with him, but if he forsook the Lord, the Lord would forsake him. Azariah pointed out that this had been the case with Israel in the past, so if Asa would strengthen himself in the Lord, he would be rewarded. (Gal. 6:9)
Jeroboam’s death after 22 years is recorded 2 Chr. 13:20. For more information on him see 1 Kings 22 and 2 Chr. 17-20.
Nadab succeeded Jeroboam, 14:20 in the 2nd year of Asa, king of Judah. He was sinful like his father, who had made Israel sin by setting up a corrupt religious system. He only reigned two years and was slain by Baasha who took his place. He slew every one that breathed of the house of Jeroboam, 14:20, thus fulfilling the word of the Lord to the prophet Ahijah,
