2nd Chronicles 24

KING JAMES BIBLE

1 JOASH was seven years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name also was Zibiah of Beer-sheba.
2 And Joash did that which was right in the sight of the Lord all the days of Jehoiada the priest.
3 And Jehoiada took for him two wives; and he begat sons and daughters.
4 And it came to pass after this, that Joash was minded to repair the house of the Lord.
5 And he gathered together the priests and the Levites, and said to them, Go out unto the cities of Judah, and gather of all Israel money to repair the house of your God from year to year, and see that ye hasten the matter. Howbeit the Levites hastened it not.
6 And the king called for Jehoiada the chief, and said unto him, Why hast thou not required of the Levites to bring in out of Judah and out of Jerusalem the collection, according to the commandment of Moses the servant of the Lord, and of the congregation of Israel, for the tabernacle of witness?
7 For the sons of Athaliah, that wicked woman, had broken up the house of God; and also all the dedicated things of the house of the Lord did they bestow upon Baalim.
8 And at the king’s commandment they made a chest, and set it without at the gate of the house of the Lord.
9 And they made a proclamation through Judah and Jerusalem, to bring in to the Lord the collection that Moses the servant of God laid upon Israel in the wilderness.
10 And all the princes and all the people rejoiced, and brought in, and cast into the chest, until they had made an end.
11 Now it came to pass, that at what time the chest was brought unto the king’s office by the hand of the Levites, and when they saw that there was much money, the king’s scribe and the high priest’s officer came and emptied the chest, and took it, and carried it to his place again. Thus they did day by day, and gathered money in abundance.
12 And the king and Jehoiada gave it to such as did the work of the service of the house of the Lord, and hired masons and carpenters to repair the house of the Lord, and also such as wrought iron and brass to mend the house of the Lord.
13 So the workmen wrought, and the work was perfected by them, and they set the house of God in his state, and strengthened it.
14 And when they had finished it, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada, whereof were made vessels for the house of the Lord, even vessels to minister, and to offer withal, and spoons, and vessels of gold and silver. And they offered burnt offerings in the house of the Lord continually all the days of Jehoiada.
15 But Jehoiada waxed old, and was full of days when he died; an hundred and thirty years old was he when he died.
16 And they buried him in the city of David among the kings, because he had done good in Israel, both toward God, and toward his house.
17 Now after the death of Jehoiada came the princes of Judah, and made obeisance to the king. Then the king hearkened unto them.
18 And they left the house of the Lord God of their fathers, and served groves and idols: and wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this their trespass.
19 Yet he sent prophets to them, to bring them again unto the Lord; and they testified against them: but they would not give ear.
20 And the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, which stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of the Lord, that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken the Lord, he hath also forsaken you.
21 And they conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of the Lord.
22 Thus Joash the king remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but slew his son. And when he died, he said, The Lord look upon it, and require it.
23 And it came to pass at the end of the year, that the host of Syria came up against him: and they came to Judah and Jerusalem, and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people, and sent all the spoil of them unto the king of Damascus.
24 For the army of the Syrians came with a small company of men, and the Lord delivered a very great host into their hand, because they had forsaken the Lord God of their fathers. So they executed judgment against Joash.
25 And when they were departed from him, (for they left him in great diseases,) his own servants conspired against him for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and slew him on his bed, and he died: and they buried him in the city of David, but they buried him not in the sepulchres of the kings.
26 And these are they that conspired against him; Zabad the son of Shimeath an Ammonitess, and Jehozabad the son of Shimrith a Moabitess.
27 Now concerning his sons, and the greatness of the burdens laid upon him, and the repairing of the house of God, behold, they are written in the story of the book of the kings. And Amaziah his son reigned in his stead.

KING JAMES 1611

1Ioash was seuen yeeres old when he beganne to reigne; and he reigned fortie yeeres in Ierusalem: his mothers name also was Zibiah, of Beer-sheba.

2And Ioash did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, all the dayes of Iehoiada the Priest.

3And Iehoiada tooke for him two wiues, and he begat sonnes and daughters.

4 And it came to passe after this that Ioash was minded to repaire the house of the Lord.

5And hee gathered together the priests and the Leuites, and saide to them, Go out vnto the cities of Iudah, and gather of all Israel money to repaire the house of your God from yeere to yere, and see that ye haste the matter: howbeit the Leuites hastened it not.

6And the king called for Iehoiada the chiefe, and saide vnto him, Why hast thou not required of the Leuites to bring in out of Iudah and out of Ierusalem, the collection, according to the commandement of Moses the seruant of the Lord, and of the Congregation of Israel, for the tabernacle of Witnesse?

7For the sonnes of Athaliah that wicked woman, had broken vp the house of God, and also all the dedicate things of the house of the Lord, did they bestow vpon Baalim.

8And at the kings commandement they made a chest, and set it without, at the gate of the house of the Lord.

9And they made a proclamation through Iudah & Ierusalem, to bring in to the Lord, the collection that Moses the seruant of God laid vpon Israel in the wildernesse.

10And all the Princes and all the people reioyced, and brought in, and cast into the chest, vntill they had made an ende.

11Now it came to passe that at what time the chest was brought vnto the kings office, by the hand of the Leuites: and when they sawe that there was much money: the kings Scribe, and the high priests officer, came and emptied the chest, and tooke it, and caried it to his place againe. Thus they did day by day, and gathered money in abundance.

12And the king and Iehoiada gaue it to such as did the worke of the seruice of the house of the Lord, and hired Masons and carpenters to repaire the house of the Lord, and also such as wrought yron and brasse to mend the house of the Lord.

13So the workemen wrought, and the worke was perfected by them: and they set the house of God in his state, and strengthened it.

14And when they had finished it, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Iehoiada, whereof were made vessels for the house of the Lord, euen vessels to minister and to offer withall, and spoones, and vessels of golde and siluer: and they offered burnt offerings in the house of the Lord continually, all the dayes of Iehoiada.

15 But Iehoiada waxed old, and was full of dayes when hee died: an hundred and thirtie yeeres olde was hee when hee died.

16And they buried him in the citie of Dauid among the kings, because he had done good in Israel, both towards God, and towards his house.

17Now after the death of Iehoiada, came the Princes of Iudah, and made obeysance to the king: then the king hearkened vnto them.

18And they left the house of the Lord God of their fathers, and serued groues and idols: and wrath came vpon Iudah and Ierusalem for this their trespasse.

19Yet hee sent prophets to them to bring them againe vnto the Lord, and they testified against them: but they would not giue eare.

20And the spirit of God came vpon Zechariah the sonne of Iehoiada the priest, which stood aboue the people, and said vnto them: Thus saith God, Why transgresse yee the commandements of the Lord, that yee cannot prosper? Because yee haue forsaken the Lord, he hath also forsaken you.

21And they conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandement of the king, in the court of the house of the Lord.

22Thus Ioash the king remembred not the kindnesse which Iehoiada his father had done to him, but slew his sonne: and when he died, he said, The Lord looke vpon it, and require it.

23 And it came to passe at the end of the yeere, that the hoste of Syria came vp against him: and they came to Iudah and Ierusalem, and destroyed all the Princes of the people from among the people, and sent all the spoile of them vnto the king of Damascus.

24For the armie of the Syrians came with a small companie of men, and the Lord deliuered a very great hoste into their hand, because they had forsaken the Lord God of their fathers: so they executed iudgement against Ioash.

25And when they were departed from him (for they left him in great diseases) his owne seruants conspired against him, for the blood of the sonnes of Iehoiada the Priest, and slewe him on his bed, and he died: and they buried him in the citie of Dauid, but they buried him not in the sepulchres of the Kings.

26And these are they that conspired against him; Zabad the sonne of Shimeah an Ammonitesse, and Iehozabad the sonne of Shimrith a Moabitesse.

27 Now concerning his sonnes, and the greatnesse of the burdens laide vpon him, and the repairing of the house of God, behold, they are written in the story of the booke of the Kings. And Amaziah his sonne reigned in his stead.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 Joash was seven years old when he became king, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother, named Zibiah, was from Beer-sheba.

2 Joash did what was pleasing to the LORD as long as Jehoiada the priest lived.

3 Jehoiada provided him with two wives, and he became the father of sons and daughters.

4 After some time, Joash decided to restore the LORD'S temple.

5 He called together the priests and Levites and said to them: "Go out to all the cities of Judah and collect money from all Israel that you may repair the house of your God over the years. You must hasten this affair." But the Levites did not hasten.

6 Then the king summoned Jehoiada, who was in charge, and said to him: "Why have you not required the Levites to bring in from Judah and Jerusalem the tax levied by Moses, the servant of the LORD, and by the assembly of Israel, for the tent of the testimony?"

7 For the wicked Athaliah and her sons had damaged the house of God and had even turned over to the Baals the dedicated resources of the LORD'S temple.

8 At the king's command, therefore, they made a chest, which they put outside the gate of the LORD'S temple.

9 They had it proclaimed throughout Judah and Jerusalem that the tax which Moses, the servant of God, had imposed on Israel in the desert should be brought to the LORD.

10 All the princes and the people rejoiced; they brought what was asked and cast it into the chest until it was filled.

11 Whenever the chest was brought to the royal officials by the Levites and they saw that it contained much money, the royal scribe and an overseer for the high priest came, emptied the chest, then took it back and returned it to its place. This they did day after day until they had collected a large sum of money.

12 Then the king and Jehoiada gave it to the workmen in charge of the labor on the LORD'S temple, who hired masons and carpenters to restore the temple, and also iron- and bronze-smiths to repair it.

13 The workmen labored, and the task of restoration progressed under their hands. They restored the house of God according to its original form, and reinforced it.

14 After they had finished, they brought the rest of the money to the king and to Jehoiada, who had it made into utensils for the LORD'S temple, utensils for the service and the holocausts, and basins and other gold and silver utensils. They offered holocausts in the LORD'S temple continually throughout the lifetime of Jehoiada.

15 Jehoiada lived to a ripe old age; he was a hundred and thirty years old when he died.

16 He was buried in the City of David with the kings, because he had done good in Israel, in particular with respect to God and his temple.

17 After the death of Jehoiada, the princes of Judah came and paid homage to the king, and the king then listened to them.

18 They forsook the temple of the LORD, the God of their fathers, and began to serve the sacred poles and the idols; and because of this crime of theirs, wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem.

19 Although prophets were sent to them to convert them to the LORD, the people would not listen to their warnings.

20 Then the spirit of God possessed Zechariah, son of Jehoiada the priest. He took his stand above the people and said to them: "God says, 'Why are you transgressing the LORD'S commands, so that you cannot prosper? Because you have abandoned the LORD, he has abandoned you.'"

21 But they conspired against him, and at the king's order they stoned him to death in the court of the LORD'S temple.

22 Thus King Joash was unmindful of the devotion shown him by Jehoiada, Zechariah's father, and slew his son. And as he was dying, he said, "May the LORD see and avenge."

23 At the turn of the year a force of Arameans came up against Joash. They invaded Judah and Jerusalem, did away with all the princes of the people, and sent all their spoil to the king of Damascus.

24 Though the Aramean force came with few men, the LORD surrendered a very large force into their power, because Judah had abandoned the LORD, the God of their fathers. So punishment was meted out to Joash.

25 After the Arameans had departed from him, leaving him in grievous suffering, his servants conspired against him because of the murder of the son of Jehoiada the priest. They killed him on his sickbed. He was buried in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.

26 These conspired against him: Zabad, son of Shimeath from Ammon, and Jehozabad, son of Shimrith from Moab.

27 Of his sons, and the great tribute imposed on him, and of his rebuilding of the house of God, there is a written account in the midrash of the book of the kings. His son Amaziah succeeded him as king.

COMMENTARIE

v 1-3. Joash (Jehoash) began to reign when he was seven and reigned 40 years, from 835 -796 B.C. His mother, wife of Ahaziah, was Zibia of Beer-sheba. As long as Joash listened to instructions from Jehoiada, he was a good king. However, old habits are hard to break, and he was not able to remove all the high places of their worship.
Three kinds of offerings are mentioned here as in Lev. 23:38. Duet. 12:6 [1]  As Moses commanded one half shekel, Ex. 30:12 & 2 Chr. 24:6,9.
[2]  Dedicated and vowed and value estimated, Lev. 27. (Min 3,  Max 50 shekels)
[3]  Free will offerings, Ex. 35:29 and many others places.

V 4-7 Compare with 2 Chr. 24:4-7. Joash’s idea was good, hurrying the priests and Levites all over Judah to collect money to repair the things destroyed or taken to the house of Baal by Athaliah’s wicked sons. But there was no responsibility attached to it, and they just went on using all the money for regular expenses, and the needed repairs were not done. No record is given as to how many years before his patience wore thin and he chided Jehoiada for not requiring it be done as Moses commanded.  He ordered that no more money be taken for this purpose but to get the job done.

V 8-14 Now Joash assigned responsibility and had Jehoiada bore a hole in the lid of a chest and the doorkeeper assigned to put in all the money that came for that purpose . (Trespass and sin money continued to be used to support the priests, v 16.) Now individuals were responsible, and understanding how the money was to be used, princes and people gave abundantly. Using proper financial procedure, the accumulated money was counted, set aside, and paid directly to the repair people. Apparently they paid as money came in, and none of it was used for vessels, until the temple repairs were completed. The workman were more honest than the priests had been, and whatever it was worth, they were paid without question. Worship was done properly all the days of Jehoiada.

V 15-27 Tells of the death of Jehoiada at 110 years and his burial with the kings, for his good deeds. With his mentor gone, Joash, no depth of his own, was quickly led astray by the princes of Judah. He did not join them in their worship of idols, and even sent prophets among them to turn them to the Lord. However, he was not forceful, they paid no attention, and God began to judge Judah. Jehoiada’s son, Zechariah, denounced their action and told them the judgments of God were for their evil deeds. Joash was convicted, but instead of repenting, he became angry, and ordered that the messenger be killed, the son (or sons, v 25) of the  man who had saved his life and guided him through the years. At Zechariah’s death he committed them into the hand of the Lord, and we soon see Joash’s tragic end and later judgment on Judah for killing prophets.
In judgment upon Joash, God allowed a small army of Syria to come in and kill all the princes of Judah and take back spoils.
The Syrians left Joash badly wounded, and two of his servants, an Ammonite and a Moabite, killed him in vengeance (theirs or God’s) for him killing Zechariah. They may have also thought this would allay God’s judgment.
