The Song of Solomon 02

KING JAMES BIBLE

I AM the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys.
2 As the lily among thorns, so is my love among the daughters.
3 As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste.
4 He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love.
5 Stay me with flagons, comfort me with apples: for I am sick of love.
6 His left hand is under my head, and his right hand doth embrace me.
7 I charge you, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, by the roes, and by the hinds of the field, that ye stir not up, nor awake my love, till he please.
8 The voice of my beloved! behold, he cometh leaping upon the mountains, skipping upon the hills.
9 My beloved is like a roe or a young hart: behold, he standeth behind our wall, he looketh forth at the windows, shewing himself through the lattice.
10 My beloved spake, and said unto me, Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away.
11 For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone;
12 The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land;
13 The fig tree putteth forth her green figs, and the vines with the tender grape give a good smell. Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away.
14 O my dove, that art in the clefts of the rock, in the secret places of the stairs, let me see thy countenance, let me hear thy voice; for sweet is thy voice, and thy countenance is comely.
15 Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines: for our vines have tender grapes.
16 My beloved is mine, and I am his: he feedeth among the lilies.
17 Until the day break, and the shadows flee away, turn, my beloved, and be thou like a roe or a young hart upon the mountains of Bether.

KING JAMES 1611

1I Am the rose of Sharon, and the lillie of the valleys.

2As the lillie among thornes, so is my loue among the daughters.

3As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloued among the sonnes. I sate downe vnder his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweete to my taste.

4Hee brought me to the banketting house, and his banner ouer mee, was loue.

5Stay me with flagons, comfort me with apples, for I am sicke of loue.

6His left hand is vnder my head, and his right hand doeth imbrace me.

7I charge you, O ye daughters of Ierusalem, by the Roes, and by the hindes of the field, that ye stirre not vp, nor awake my loue, till she please.

8¶ The voice of my beloued! behold! hee commeth leaping vpon the mountaines, skipping vpon the hils.

9My beloued is like a Roe, or a yong Hart: behold, he standeth behind our wall, he looketh foorth at the windowe, shewing himselfe through the lattesse.

10My beloued spake, and said vnto me, Rise vp, my Loue, my faire one, and come away.

11For loe, the winter is past, the raine is ouer, and gone.

12The flowers appeare on the earth, the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land.

13The fig tree putteth foorth her greene figs, and the vines with the tender grape giue a good smell. Arise, my loue, my faire one, and come away.

14¶ O my doue! that art in the clefts of the rocke, in the secret places of the staires: let me see thy countenance, let me heare thy voice, for sweet is thy voice, and thy countenance is comely.

15Take vs the foxes, the litle foxes, that spoile the vines: for our vines haue tender grapes.

16 My beloued is mine, and I am his: he feedeth among the lillies.

17Untill the day breake, and the shadowes flee away: turne my beloued and be thou like a Roe, or a yong Hart, vpon the mountaines of Bether.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 I am a flower of Sharon,
a lily of the valley.

2As a lily among thorns,
so is my beloved among women.

3 B As an apple tree among the trees of the woods,
so is my lover among men.
I delight to rest in his shadow,
and his fruit is sweet to my mouth.

4 He brings me into the banquet hall
and his emblem over me is love.

5 Strengthen me with raisin cakes,
refresh me with apples,
for I am faint with love.

6 His left hand is under my head
and his right arm embraces me.

7 I adjure you, daughters of Jerusalem,
by the gazelles and hinds of the field,
Do not arouse, do not stir up love
before its own time.

8 Hark! my lover-here he comes
springing across the mountains,
leaping across the hills.

9 My lover is like a gazelle
Here he stands behind our wall,
gazing through the windows,
peering through the lattices.

10 My lover speaks; he says to me,
"Arise, my beloved, my beautiful one,
and come!

11 "For see, the winter is past,
the rains are over and gone.

12 The flowers appear on the earth,
the time of pruning the vines has come,
and the song of the dove is heard in our land.

13 The fig tree puts forth its figs,
and the vines, in bloom, give forth fragrance.
Arise, my beloved, my beautiful one,
and come!

14 "O my dove in the clefts of the rock,
in the secret recesses of the cliff,
Let me see you,
let me hear your voice,
For your voice is sweet,
and you are lovely."

15 Catch us the foxes, the little foxes
that damage the vineyards; for our vineyards are in bloom!

16 My lover belongs to me and I to him;
he browses among the lilies.

17 Until the day breathes cool and the shadows lengthen,
roam, my lover,
Like a gazelle or a young stag
upon the mountains of Bether.

COMMENTARIE

v 1. The Shulamite claims to be a mere local flower, unsuited for the palace.

v 2. Solomon compares her to other women as a lily among thorns.

v 3-6. She protests she is sick of love for the Shepherd and can feel his embrace.
(We should be able to feel the presence of the Lord.)

v 7. Solomon gives up for a time, and to the amazement of the other women she declares that she is not like a free animal, so not to lure her to a premarital love affair.

v 8-15. She has grown so homesick and out of place that she visualizes the memory of past experiences and conversations with her Shepherd.
(We need to meet with our Shepherd daily and have communication with Him.)

v 16. The others become curious about her love, but she says “He is mine.”
(Here is a possible problem with this interpretation. As believers we are to bring others to Christ. However, if we tell others about Him, Jer 29:13 says, And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.) See also 6:1.

v 17. She addresses the absent Shepherd, longing for him to come to her.
