KING JAMES BIBLE

1AND you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
11 Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;
12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:
13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.
14 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;
15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;
16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:
17 And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh.
18 For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.
19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;
20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;
21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:
22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

KING JAMES 1611

1And you hath hee quickned who were dead in trespasses, and sinnes,

2Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the aire, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience,

3Among whom also we all had our conuersation in times past, in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh, and of the minde, and were by nature the children of wrath, euen as others:

4But God who is rich in mercie, for his great loue wherewith hee loued vs,

5Euen when wee were dead in sinnes, hath quickned vs together with Christ, (by grace ye are saued)

6And hath raised vs vp together, and made vs sit together in heauenly places in Christ Iesus:

7That in the ages to come, hee might shew the exceeding riches of his grace, in his kindenesse towards vs, through Christ Iesus.

8For by grace are ye saued, through faith, and that not of your selues: it is the gift of God:

9Not of workes, lest any man should boast.

10For wee are his workemanship, created in Christ Iesus vnto good workes, which God hath before ordeined, that we should walke in them.

11Wherefore remember that ye being in time passed Gentiles in the flesh, who are called vncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands,

12That at that time yee were without Christ, being aliens from the common wealth of Israel, and strangers from the couenants of promise, hauing no hope, & without God in the world.

13But now in Christ Iesus, ye who sometimes were far off, are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

14For hee is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken downe the middle wall of partition betweene vs:

15Hauing abolished in his flesh the enmitie, euen the Lawe of Commandements conteined in Ordinances, for to make in himselfe, of twaine, one newe man, so making peace.

16And that he might reconcile both vnto God in one body by the crosse, hauing slaine the enmitie thereby,

17And came, and preached peace to you, which were afarre off, and to them that were nigh.

18For through him wee both haue an accesse by one Spirit vnto the Father.

19Now therefore yee are no more strangers and forreiners; but fellow citizens with the Saints, and of the houshold of God,

20And are built vpon the foundation of the Apostles and Prophets, Iesus Christ himselfe being the chiefe corner stone,

21In whom all the building fitly framed together, groweth vnto an holy Temple in the Lord:

22In whom you also are builded together for an habitation of God thorow the Spirit.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 You were dead in your transgressions and sins 2 in which you once lived following the age of this world, following the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the disobedient. 3 All of us once lived among them in the desires of our flesh, following the wishes of the flesh and the impulses, and we were by nature children of wrath, like the rest. 4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of the great love he had for us, 5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, brought us to life with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 raised us up with him, and seated us with him in the heavens in Christ Jesus, 7 that in the ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not from you; it is the gift of God; 9 it is not from works, so no one may boast. 10 For we are his handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the good works that God has prepared in advance, that we should live in them. 11 Therefore, remember that at one time you, Gentiles in the flesh, called the uncircumcision by those called the circumcision, which is done in the flesh by human hands, 12 were at that time without Christ, alienated from the community of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, without hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have become near by the blood of Christ. 14 For he is our peace, he who made both one and broke down the dividing wall of enmity, through his flesh, 15 abolishing the law with its commandments and legal claims, that he might create in himself one new person in place of the two, thus establishing peace, 16 and might reconcile both with God, in one body, through the cross, putting that enmity to death by it. 17 He came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near, 18 for through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. 19 So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the holy ones and members of the household of God, 20 built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the capstone. 21 Through him the whole structure is held together and grows into a temple sacred in the Lord; 22 in him you also are being built together into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.

COMMENTARIE

v 1. The unregenerate person has been slain, separated from God by sin [Rom. 5:12], and is spiritually dead. We sin because we are sinners, not sinners because sin.
v 2. Before salvation, believers were like the unbelievers who:
a. Follow the ways of this world, the system that opposes all that is godly. (Notice the “in the past” in v 2,3 and 11)
b. Follow the ways of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, Satan.
c. Have the spirit, or power from Satan, operating in them.
v 3. All of us have been subjected to the lusts of the flesh and mind as in Gal. 5:16-24. We were born in sin and by nature the object, or children, of God’s wrath.
v 4-6. But God. His mercy and love change the hopeless picture for all dead in sin, saving us by His grace. His love has done three things for us:
a. v 5, made us alive with Christ.
b. v 6, raised us up with Christ.
c. v 6. Seated us in the heavenly sphere spiritually, by virtue of being in Christ.
v 7. In future ages God puts us on exhibit, showing the miracle of the wondrous grace that has worked in us who have accepted His salvation.
v 8. It is by grace we are saved, and the means of accepting our salvation is by faith alone. The “gift of God”, because of the composition of the sentence, does not refer to either grace or faith as is argued. It refers back to the concept of salvation.
v 9. This reinforces the previous verse, even faith as a work would cause pride.
v 10. Salvation is not of man but is God’s handiwork God’s purpose of creating believers in Christ is that He might perform in them the works which he foreordained which they should do and in which they should walk.
v 11-12. Those who were Gentiles had been derided by fleshly circumcised Jews. They lacked five privileges God had given to Israel.
a. Without Christ, no national hope of a Messiah.
b. As a whole they were excluded from citizenship in Israel.
c. They were not participants in the covenants of promise, a land, king & blessing.
d. No hope of a personal Messiah - Deliverer or Messianic Age.
e. Without God, knowledge of God, there was no hope purpose or direction in life.
v 13. Contrast Gentile past separation from God to near through Christ’s blood.
v 14. Christ is our bond of peace and unity, and made Jew and Gentile one body. The wall of enmity between them is broken down. (Other meanings for wall are invalid)
v 15-16. By His death Christ destroyed the enmity caused by the law. From the two groups, Christ made one body, the Church.
v17. Christ preached mainly to Jews, but through His death and His apostles, the gospel was given to both [near] Jews and [far off] Gentiles.
v 18. Here is another illustration of the Trinity such as found in Isa. 48:16. Because of Christ’s death, believers have access by the Holy Spirit to the Father.
v 19. Therefore, or,  the result of this unity is that Jews and Gentiles are both God’s people and His household. Gentiles do not become a part of Israel, but of the Church.
v 20-22. The Church is like a temple housing God, founded upon Christ, then the apostles, with all knit together by the Spirit like a glued, laminated rafter.
