Ephesians 05

KING JAMES BIBLE

1BE ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;
2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.
3 But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;
4 Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.
5 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.
7 Be not ye therefore partakers with them.
8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
9 (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)
10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.
12 For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.
13 But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.
14 Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.
15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,
16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.
18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;
21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.
22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.
25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.
29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:
30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.
31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.
32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

KING JAMES 1611

1Be ye therefore followers of God, as deare children.

2And walke in loue, as Christ also hath loued vs, and hath giuen himselfe for vs, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling sauour;

3But fornication and all vncleannesse, or couetousnesse, let it not be once named amongst you, as becommeth Saints:

4Neither filthinesse, nor foolish talking, nor iesting, which are not conuenient: but rather giuing of thankes.

5For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor vncleane person, nor couetous man who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdome of Christ, and of God.

6Let no man deceiue you with vaine words: for because of these things commeth the wrath of God vpon the children of disobedience.

7Bee not yee therefore partakers with them.

8For yee were sometimes darkenesse, but now are yee light in the Lord: walke as children of light,

9(For the fruite of the spirit is in all goodnesse and righteousnesse & trueth.)

10Proouing what is acceptable vnto the Lord:

11And haue no fellowship with the vnfruitfull workes of darkenesse, but rather reproue them.

12For it is a shame euen to speake of those things which are done of them in secret.

13But all things that are reprooued, are made manifest by the light: for whatsoeuer doth make manifest, is light.

14Wherfore hee saith: Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall giue thee light.

15See then that yee walke circumspectly, not as fooles, but as wise,

16Redeming the time, because the dayes are euill.

17Wherefore be ye not vnwise, but vnderstanding what the will of the Lord is.

18And bee not drunke with wine, wherein is excesse: but bee filled with the Spirit:

19Speaking to your selues, in Psalmes, and Hymnes, and Spirituall songs, singing and making melodie in your heart to the Lord,

20Giuing thankes alwayes for all things vnto God, and the Father, in the Name of our Lord Iesus Christ,

21Submitting your selues one to another in the feare of God.

22Wiues, submit your selues vnto your own husbands, as vnto the Lord.

23For the husband is the head of the wife, euen as Christ is the head of the Church: and he is the sauiour of the body.

24Therefore as the Church is subiect vnto Christ, so let the wiues bee to their owne husbands in euery thing.

25Husbands, loue your wiues, euen as Christ also loued the Church, and gaue himselfe for it:

26That he might sanctifie & cleanse it with the washing of water, by the word,

27That hee might present it to himselfe a glorious Church, not hauing spot or wrinckle, or any such thing: but that it should bee holy and without blemish.

28So ought men to loue their wiues, as their owne bodies: hee that loueth his wife, loueth himselfe.

29For no man euer yet hated his owne flesh: but nourisheth and cherisheth it, euen as the Lord the Church:

30For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.

31For this cause shall a man leaue his father and mother, and shall be ioyned vnto his wife, and they two shalbe one flesh.

32This is a great mysterie: but I speake concerning Christ and the Church.

33Neuerthelesse, let euery one of you in particular, so loue his wife euen as himselfe, and the wife see that she reuerence her husband.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 So be imitators of God, as beloved children, 2 and live in love, as Christ loved us and handed himself over for us as a sacrificial offering to God for a fragrant aroma. 3 Immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be mentioned among you, as is fitting among holy ones, 4 no obscenity or silly or suggestive talk, which is out of place, but instead, thanksgiving. 5 Be sure of this, that no immoral or impure or greedy person, that is, an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. 6 Let no one deceive you with empty arguments, for because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the disobedient. 7 So do not be associated with them. 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light, 9 for light produces every kind of goodness and righteousness and truth. 10 Try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. 11 Take no part in the fruitless works of darkness; rather expose them, 12 for it is shameful even to mention the things done by them in secret; 13 but everything exposed by the light becomes visible, 14 for everything that becomes visible is light. Therefore, it says: "Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light." 15 Watch carefully then how you live, not as foolish persons but as wise, 16 making the most of the opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore, do not continue in ignorance, but try to understand what is the will of the Lord. 18 And do not get drunk on wine, in which lies debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, 19 addressing one another (in) psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and playing to the Lord in your hearts, 20 giving thanks always and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father. 21 Be subordinate to one another out of reverence for Christ. 22 Wives should be subordinate to their husbands as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is head of his wife just as Christ is head of the church, he himself the savior of the body. 24 As the church is subordinate to Christ, so wives should be subordinate to their husbands in everything. 25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ loved the church and handed himself over for her 26 to sanctify her, cleansing her by the bath of water with the word, 27 that he might present to himself the church in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. 28 So (also) husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one hates his own flesh but rather nourishes and cherishes it, even as Christ does the church, 30 because we are members of his body. 31 "For this reason a man shall leave (his) father and (his) mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh." 32 This is a great mystery, but I speak in reference to Christ and the church. 33 In any case, each one of you should love his wife as himself, and the wife should respect her husband.

COMMENTARIE

v 1. Gradually improve, mimic God as a well beloved child imitates it’s father.
v 2. Walk with esteem and delight in one another as Christ loved us and gave Himself. His sacrifice became a sweet fragrance before God.
v 3. Self-centered vices in conduct - covetousness: All sexual immorality, any kind of impurity and greed are unbecoming to God’s holy people.
v 4. Improprieties in speech: shameless obscenities, stupid corrupt talk. Jesting is not a sense of humor, but witty speech as an instrument of sin. It includes adjusting ourselves to the company we keep; foul talk and good words with innuendoes. It is more fitting to use our voices in giving thanks to God, and it takes our minds off evil.
v 5,6. Christians, realize these are not empty words, unsaved receive God’s wrath. Greed is like idolatry because it puts things ahead of God. Those practicing these sins continuously give evidence that they have never been truly born again.
v 7. Therefore Christians should have nothing to do with these things.
v 8-10. Believers were once a part of that darkness, but having come out of it, we should walk in the Lord Who is light, Jn. 8:12, and reflect these 3 characteristics of that light (v 9 Spirit is light in most manuscripts.), and discern, learn what pleases the Lord.
v 11. Have no fellowship beyond the necessity of 1 Cor. 5:10, with sinful deeds of anyone. Instead, let our conduct expose and convict them. This would seem to apply to both believers and unbelievers living in sin.
v 12. Some believers seem eager to be the first to report immoral deeds to “pray about”, when actually it is a shame to even mention it.
v 13. Light exposes evil deeds and they become visible for what they really are.
v 14. This may be a quote from Isa. 60:1,2 and a combination of Old Testament references. A sleeper rising and Christ shining upon him leads some to feel that 7-14 speak of church discipline and erring believers convicted and turning to light, then walking so that other believers in error will also turn to walk pleasing to the Lord.
v 15. Walk as carefully as a cat on a board fence with mean dogs on both sides. Be sensitive to the will of God.
v 16. Take advantage of each opportunity in these days of active opposition.
v 17. As we understand what pleases the Lord we can make wise decisions.
v 18. The negative command to not be filled and under the debauchery and control of wine is principally to contrast with the positive, being controlled by the Spirit.
a. Be drunk (not with wine but with the Holy Spirit). An alcoholic is not under his own control but under the control of alcohol.
b. Be filled (imperative) - 100% filled, not to be is sin. (compare James 4:17, He that knoweth to do good and doeth it not, to him it is sin.)
c. We can lose that filling. Holy Spirit does not leave us, it is the power, control over us leaving.
d. The automatic plan. We do not have to ask the Lord in order to be filled, but the Spirit acts upon us, filling us. It is a moment by moment experience. Confess sin immediately so as not to grieve Spirit, and He can fill us. Omitting prayer and Bible reading grieve Him.
e. No exceptions. All , let Him control every aspect of our lives.
Summary: We are in dwelled, baptized and sealed by the Spirit at the time of salvation, but we need to be continually filled. This does not mean talking in tongues,  but yielding ourselves to His control. Neither does yielding to His control imply that we should talk in tongues. The sign gifts are not intended for this age (a separate study). We have all the Spirit we will ever get, we just need to give Him more of ourselves.
v 19-21. Four results of being filled with the Spirit, all with reverence to Christ:
a. Join believers in singing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs in general.
b. Relate to the Lord by vocal singing and the internal joy that comes with it. (For those who don’t believe in instruments in church, the Old Testament practice of singing Psalms was with a harp. See 1 Chron. 15:28 for other musical instruments. So stringed as well as wind or percussion instruments used properly are acceptable.)
c. Thanking God the Father for all things.
d. Submitting, serving rather than dominating others.
v 22-25. The reason for the woman’s submission is not inferiority, but because her husband is the head of the wife as Christ is head of the Church, 1 Cor. 11:3. As Christ is Savior, the husband is her protector. Be submissive as if to Christ. Note not submissive selectively but in all things. Few homes are deeply happy and well balanced if this order is reversed.
v 25. Three verses were to wives, eight address the responsibility of husbands. The greatest responsibility is to love the wife, then protection and provision fall in.
v 26. This washing is not baptism. Water is a type of the Word. Christ’s blood cleansed from sin. A bath in the Word of God in the heart of a Spirit filled believer cleanses in the sense of inward ethical purification for a clean walk. As a betrothed maid bathes before the marriage ceremony, the Church is to be, while betrothed, bathed in the Word before marriage to Christ.
v 27. At the end of the Jewish betrothal was the presentation, when the bride went to the home of the groom and he took her into the “honey moon suite”. He removed her veil and could see her exposed before him just as she was, blemishes and all. Christ wants to prepare His bride so that at the presentation she will be holy and blameless. It seems logical that believers judgment, Judgment Seat of Christ, will be at about the time of the presentation and  marriage.
v 28-30. Obviously a man takes care of his own body, no matter what the imperfections, and should have the same concern and love for his wife, regardless of her imperfections. Again the parallel of the Lord caring for the Church.
v 31,32. The one male and one female relationship in marriage is closer than parents to children or any spurious relationship. It is a mystery how they can be considered one flesh, yet that is the same bond we have in Christ.
v 33. Paul goes back to interpersonal relationships, which will continue into the next chapter. The husband wife relationship, which does not fail in any age, is for a  husband to love his wife and the wife to reverence her husband. Many current women rebel at the implication of 1 Pet. 3:6 that they should obey their husbands, and many husbands seek to share their love or lust with another person.
