I THEREFORE, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,
2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;
3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;
5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism,
6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
7 But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.
8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.
9 (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?
10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)
11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
17 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,
18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:
19 Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.
20 But ye have not so learned Christ;
21 If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:
22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.
26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:
27 Neither give place to the devil.
28 Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.
29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:
32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.
1I therefore the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that yee walke worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,
2With all lowlinesse and meekenesse, with long suffering, forbearing one another in loue.
3Endeuouring to keepe the vnitie of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
4There is one body, and one spirit, euen as yee are called in one hope of your calling.
5One Lord, one Faith, one Baptisme,
6One God and Father of all, who is aboue all, & through all, & in you all.
7But vnto euery one of vs is giuen grace, according to the measure of the gift of Christ.
8Wherefore he saith: When he ascended vp on high, he led captiuitie captiue, and gaue gifts vnto men.
9(Now that he ascended, what is it but that hee also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?
10He that descended, is the same also that ascended vp far aboue all heauens, that he might fill all things.)
11And he gaue some, Apostles: and some, Prophets: and some, Euangelists: and some, Pastors, and teachers:
12For the perfecting of the Saints, for the worke of the ministerie, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
13Till we all come in the vnitie of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Sonne of God, vnto a perfect man, vnto the measure of the stature of the fulnesse of Christ:
14That we hencefoorth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and caried about with euery winde of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftinesse, whereby they lye in waite to deceiue:
15But speaking the trueth in loue, may grow vp into him in all things which is the head, euen Christ:
16From whom the whole body fitly ioyned together, and compacted by that which euery ioynt supplyeth, according to the effectuall working in the measure of euery part, maketh increase of the body, vnto the edifying of it selfe in loue.
17This I say therefore and testifie in the Lord, that yee henceforth walke not as other Gentiles walke in the vanitie of their minde,
18Hauing the vnderstanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindnesse of their heart:
19Who being past feeling, haue giuen themselues ouer vnto lasciuiousnesse, to worke all vncleannesse with greedinesse.
20But ye haue not so learned Christ:
21If so be that ye haue heard him, and haue bene taught by him, as the trueth is in Iesus,
22That yee put off concerning the former conuersation, the olde man, which is corrupt according to the deceitfull lusts:
23And bee renewed in the spirit of your minde:
24And that yee put on that new man, which after God is created in righteousnesse, and true holinesse.
25Wherefore putting away lying, speake euery man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.
26Be ye angry and sinne not, let not the Sunne go down vpon your wrath:
27Neither giue place to the deuill.
28Let him that stole, steale no more: but rather let him labour, working with his handes the thing which is good, that he may haue to giue to him that needeth.
29Let no corrupt communication proceede out of your mouth, but that which is good to the vse of edifying, that it may minister grace vnto the hearers.
30And grieue not the holy Sririt of God, whereby yee are sealed vnto the day of redemption.
31Let all bitternes, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and euill speaking, be put away from you, with all malice,
32And bee ye kinde one to another. tender hearted, forgiuing one another, euen as God for Christs sake hath forgiuen you.
1 I, then, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live in a manner worthy of the call you have received, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love, 3 striving to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace: 4 one body and one Spirit, as you were also called to the one hope of your call; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. 7 But grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ's gift. 8 Therefore, it says: "He ascended on high and took prisoners captive; he gave gifts to men." 9 What does "he ascended" mean except that he also descended into the lower (regions) of the earth? 10 The one who descended is also the one who ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things. 11 And he gave some as apostles, others as prophets, others as evangelists, others as pastors and teachers, 12 to equip the holy ones for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of faith and knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the extent of the full stature of Christ, 14 so that we may no longer be infants, tossed by waves and swept along by every wind of teaching arising from human trickery, from their cunning in the interests of deceitful scheming. 15 Rather, living the truth in love, we should grow in every way into him who is the head, Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, with the proper functioning of each part, brings about the body's growth and builds itself up in love. 17 So I declare and testify in the Lord that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds; 18 darkened in understanding, alienated from the life of God because of their ignorance, because of their hardness of heart, 19 they have become callous and have handed themselves over to licentiousness for the practice of every kind of impurity to excess. 20 That is not how you learned Christ, 21 assuming that you have heard of him and were taught in him, as truth is in Jesus, 22 that you should put away the old self of your former way of life, corrupted through deceitful desires, 23 and be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and put on the new self, created in God's way in righteousness and holiness of truth. 25 Therefore, putting away falsehood, speak the truth, each one to his neighbor, for we are members one of another. 26 Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun set on your anger, 27 and do not leave room for the devil. 28 The thief must no longer steal, but rather labor, doing honest work with his (own) hands, so that he may have something to share with one in need. 29 No foul language should come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for needed edification, that it may impart grace to those who hear. 30 And do not grieve the holy Spirit of God, with which you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 All bitterness, fury, anger, shouting, and reviling must be removed from you, along with all malice. 32 (And) be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another as God has forgiven you in Christ.
Ephesians 1 emphasizes all spiritual blessings in Chist, v 3
Ephesians 2, salvation by grace though faith v 8,9 works follow, v 10
Ephesians 3, mystery of unity in Christ - Gentiles fellowheirs, v 4-6.
v 1. This begins the practical portion of Ephesians and believers responsibilities. The believer’s position in Christ, Eph. 1-3, is the basis for walking worthy. We are to conduct our behavior and our lives in such a way that they measure up to our glorious heavenly calling, [High, Phil. 3:14; Holy, 2 Tim. 1:9; Heavenly, Heb. 3:11.] (Not the calling to a profession, pastors etc. but to salvation - to be saints.)
v 2,3. The first aspect of our walk is unity.
Lowliness - humbleness Acts 20:19; 1 Pet. 5:5; Phil. 2:5-8.
Meekness - mildness; gentle character; between others and accepting God’s will.
Long suffering - patience; not provoked if others harm us.
Forbearance - hold up; bear up with endurance; putting up with some one or some thing that is impossible to put up with. Pray for that person.
Endeavoring - a few people will not be placated (unity) no matter how you try.
v 4-6. Trinity - one Spirit, one Lord, one God and Father of all. Seven unities - one body, one Spirit, one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of us all. He is above (Sovereign), pervading and living in you all. This is not water baptism, but the placing in Christ by the Holy Spirit.
v 7. Every believer has the gift of the Spirit. However, God’s enablement was not given to us indiscriminately, but individually as Christ apportioned it.
v 8. This may have been a summarization of Psalm 68. The thought here is that Christ, having redeemed the Church, was as a military victor with the right to give gifts to those he chose. (Gifts in general, not the gifts of 1 Cor. 12.)
v 9,10. Some think this means Christ’s descent to the earth or even the grave. Some theorize from Heb. 4:14 & Col. 2:15 that Christ led evil forces captive when he ascended through Satan’s domain at time of resurrection. Others think it refers to His soul descending into the earth and making a proclamation to wicked angelic beings, 1 Pet. 3:18,19, but those verses simply mean He preached through Noah to spirits in prison in present day. It is better to think of His spirit being in Hades, then taking departed souls from “Abraham’s bosom” to “Paradise” in heaven after his resurrection, when He did His duties before the throne.
v 11. Christ gave men to be or perform these functions:
Apostles - special messengers or missionaries, not the office and signs of 1st 12. Gifts of healing etc. passed with the apostles, and even Paul could not heal Timothy.
Prophets - forth tellers still in effect., but fore tellers are not.
Evangelists - preachers of the gospel where it has not been known. Apostles did some evangelism, but few of the evangelists were apostles, rather deacons or elders.
Pastor teachers - Pastors should teach, but their duty is to shepherd the flock, feed it but not be lords over it, 1 Pet. 5:1-4. Not all teachers are pastors, though some feel this is one office. Actually all five positions have many similarities.
v 12. Pastors are definitely God’s gift to the Church today. They are to perfect saints to teach others, to do the work of the ministry and all to edify the body of Christ. (Draw a diagram of a simple square building with a door but no windows. Draw arrows pointing all directions. This shows that in the first century they gathered in homes, then they that were scattered abroad weren’t particularly to teach, but they were witnesses. Second, draw a rectangular building with lots of window and maybe a walk and tree. This shows that in the twenty first century, we are telling them to come instead of “having gone” after them.) In Matt. 28 the word “go” is secondary to the imperative, “make disciples”. Having gone - Make disciples - Baptizing and teaching all things. Instruction leads to worship, which leads to to expression in obedience, which leads to fellowship with others. Some study and worship will be in fellowship with others.
v 13. God,s plan is to give a gifted man to the church to teach and assist others till
one day the body is complete in the complete and perfect Christ.
v 14. Above sciences, we need to learn sound doctrine from God’s Word, which brings growth and stability, not tossing as sea waves. Sleight - KUBEIA or cube, dice. Teachers of false doctrines use planned tricky, subtle deceptiveness like a dice player.
v 15,16. In contrast, as we speak the truth in love, it leads to a mature Church with all the parts of the body functioning properly to complete God’s program.
v 17-19. The second aspect of our walk is purity.
v 17. a. Don’t walk as the heathen. Even Solomon tried many things and found emptiness and vanity.
v 18. b. Man’s mind was darkened at Adam’s fall and remains so today.
v 18. c. Blind or calloused hearts has them estranged, shut out. Nature and conscience won’t completely reveal God to calloused hearts, only Christ can.
v 19. d. They become apathetic, feel no grief for anything and are given over to lawless, wanton living. A life without any restraint or control in any area, without caring about anyone else. No absolutes, do as you want to.
v 20,21. We don’t learn heathenish ways from God’s Word. In contrast, if we have heard and been taught the truth that is in Christ we should:
v 22. Put off. Strip ourselves of the “old man” or old nature which never goes away but is worn out, useless and is corrupt in lusts and desires.
v 23,24. With a fresh mental and spiritual attitude, we need to put on the new nature which creates, makes us something out of nothing, into the pattern of God.
v 25. As members of one body, it is urgent that we express truth to one another.
v 26. This is a present imperative. We are to have righteous indignation at all evil, as the Lord’s righteous indignation when he drove out money changers, Mark 3:5. But do not sin by becoming embittered and allowing self to enter the picture. There would be fewer ulcers and continuing resentments if matters were settled before the end of each day. Kinds of anger:
a. Turbulent commotion, boiling, Eph. 4:31.
b. Wrath - anger accompanied by irritation or bitterness, Eph. 4:31, hatred.
c. Righteous indignation, 4:26.
v 27. Don’t leave a foothold for the flesh or the devil. (As cliff climbing footholds.)
v 28. Be diligent instead of dishonest.
v 29. The mouth expresses what is in the heart, Matt. 12:34. Our lives should edify others at all times.
v 30. All our sins grieve the Holy Spirit, which shows Him a person with feeling.
v 31,32. Six evils to put away: Bitterness - with indignation; Wrath - rage; anger - temper; Clamor - quarreling - out crying; Evil speaking - slander - abusive speech injurious to God or man; Malice - ill will with a known desire to injure.
Three positive commands: Kind (literally be becoming kind) - virtuous, mild, pleasant; Tender hearted - compassionate; Forgiving - grant forgiveness, as Christ set the example for us.
