KING JAMES BIBLE

THE DEVIL TEMPTS JESUS

1 And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,

2Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered.

3And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.

4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

5And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.

6And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.

7If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.

8And Jesus answered and said unto him,  Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

9And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence:

10For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee:

11And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

12And Jesus answering said unto him,  It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

13And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.

JESUS TEACHES THE PEOPLE

14And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.

15And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.

JESUS' REJECTION AT NAZARETH

16And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.

17And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,

18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,

19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

20And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.

21And he began to say unto them,  This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.

22And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son?

23 And he said unto them,  Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country.

24And he said,  Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country.

25 But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land;

26 But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow.

27 And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian.

28And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath,

29And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong.

30But he passing through the midst of them went his way,

THE MAN WITH AN UNCLEAN SPIRIT

31And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days.

32And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power.

33And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice,

34Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God.

35And Jesus rebuked him, saying,  Hold thy peace, and come out of him.  And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not.

36And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out.

37And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about.

JESUS HEALS MANY

38And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her.

39And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them.

40Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them.

41And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ.

JESUS PREACHES IN THE SYNAGOGUES OF GALILEE

42And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them.

43And he said unto them,  I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent.

44And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 Filled with the holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert 2 for forty days, to be tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were over he was hungry. 3 The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread." 4 Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'One does not live by bread alone.'" 5 Then he took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant. 6 The devil said to him, "I shall give to you all this power and their glory; for it has been handed over to me, and I may give it to whomever I wish. 7 All this will be yours, if you worship me." 8 Jesus said to him in reply, "It is written: 'You shall worship the Lord, your God, and him alone shall you serve.'"9 Then he led him to Jerusalem, made him stand on the parapet of the temple, and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10 for it is written: 'He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you,' 11 and: 'With their hands they will support you, lest you dash your foot against a stone.'" 12 Jesus said to him in reply, "It also says, 'You shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test.'" 13 When the devil had finished every temptation, he departed from him for a time. 14 Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news of him spread throughout the whole region. 15 He taught in their synagogues and was praised by all. 16 He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went according to his custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day. He stood up to read 17 and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written: 18 The Spirit of the Lord is upone me, becasue he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, 19 and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord." 20 Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him. 21 He said to them, "Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing." 22 And all spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They also asked, "Isn't this the son of Joseph?" 23 He said to them, "Surely you will quote me this proverb, 'Physician, cure yourself,' and say, 'Do here in your native place the things that we heard were done in Capernaum.'" 24 And he said, "Amen, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own native place. 25 Indeed, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah when the sky was closed for three and a half years and a severe famine spread over the entire land. 26 It was to none of these that Elijah was sent, but only to a widow in Zarephath in the land of Sidon. 27 Again, there were many lepers in Israel during the time of Elisha the prophet; yet not one of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian." 28 When the people in the synagogue heard this, they were all filled with fury. 29 They rose up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town had been built, to hurl him down headlong. 30 But he passed through the midst of them and went away. 31 Jesus then went down to Capernaum, a town of Galilee. He taught them on the sabbath, 32 and they were astonished at his teaching because he spoke with authority. 33 In the synagogue there was a man with the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out in a loud voice, 34 "Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are - the Holy One of God!" 35 Jesus rebuked him and said, "Be quiet! Come out of him!" Then the demon threw the man down in front of them and came out of him without doing him any harm. 36 They were all amazed and said to one another, "What is there about his word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out." 37 And news of him spread everywhere in the surrounding region. 38 After he left the synagogue, he entered the house of Simon. Simon's mother-in-law was afflicted with a severe fever, and they interceded with him about her. 39 He stood over her, rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up immediately and waited on them. 40 At sunset, all who had people sick with various diseases brought them to him. He laid his hands on each of them and cured them. 41 And demons also came out from many, shouting, "You are the Son of God." But he rebuked them and did not allow them to speak because they knew that he was the Messiah. 42 At daybreak, Jesus left and went to a deserted place. The crowds went looking for him, and when they came to him, they tried to prevent him from leaving them. 43 But he said to them, "To the other towns also I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God, because for this purpose I have been sent." 44 And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.

COMMENTARIE

v 1-13. Luke picks up from 3:23 where he interrupted to give the genealogy through Mary. Mark. 1:12 uses a stronger term, that the Spirit drove Him into the wilderness for 40 days fasting followed by temptation. When it was over Satan left, but only for a season. See comments in Matthew. 4:1-11. Luke reverses the second and third testings, so there may have been multiple tests.

THE GALILEAN MINISTRY

Lukes doesn't cover the Galilean Ministry as much as does Matthew 4:12 and Mark 1:14 Matthew, Mark, and Luke passes wntirely over events of the years between Jesus' Temptation and the beginning of his Galilean Ministry. John 1-:19 to 4:54
v 14,15. Andrew, Simon Peter, Philip and Nathaniel started following Him as converts, not for service, John. 1:35-51. His first miracle at the start of this ministry was turning water into wine at a wedding feast in Cana, John. 2:1-11. This was Nathaniel's home town, John 21:2. Jesus later gave a call to service along the Sea of Galilee, and a second call to service, Lk. 5:1-11. See my comments on Matthew. 4:18-22.
Jesus had been authenticated by the Spirit, led of the Spirit into wilderness, and when He goes into Galilee, He is preaching in the power of the Spirit.
v 16-30. Jesus followed the practice of Rabbis in preaching in the Synagogues, so naturally He did this on His return to Nazareth. This may of been Jesus first return trip to Nazareth since his baptism over a year before. As far as we can assume Jesus spent the interventing time in the Wildernes, at Cana, in Capernaum and in Judea (John 2:1 12 4:46) In quoting from Isa. 61:1, 2 He did not read the part about the day of vengeance which is the second advent. He spoke with great authority and probably emphasized the Spirit of the Lord on “me” . People were amazed and listened intently as He presented Himself as the Messiah, telling them this Scripture was fulfilled in their hearing. Then as they recalled Him being, as they supposed, the son of Joseph, they did not believe. When He compared their unbelief with the belief of the Gentiles, the widow of Zarephath and Naaman the leper, they were infuriated and tried to kill Him. His escape was not in becoming invisible, but by such powerful authority that they allowed Him to pass before they realized.

V 31-37 Demoniac Healed (Mark 1:21-28)

v 31-37. Having been rejected in His home town, Jesus made Capernaum His home- base of operations. He taught in the Synagogue with authority. To authenticate His ministry, He performed three miracles. First He cast an unclean spirit out of a man. This demon, like others, recognized Him as Jesus of Nazareth, the Holy One of God.

V 38-39 Peter's Mother-in-Law (Mark 1;29-31)
v 38,39. Second, He instantly healed Peter’s wife’s mother from a severe fever.

V 40-41 Multitudes Healed (Mark 1:32-34)

v 40,41. Third, at the close of Sabbath, people could legally carry their sick for healing. He healed every one, and when demons were cast out they called Him the Christ, the Son of God. Although they knew He was Christ, He rebuked them, because He had not come to be allied with or acknowledged by demons, but by people.

V 42 Retirement to Pray (Mark 1:35-37)

It is made clear in Mark 1:35-37 that Jesus sought out this solitary place before daylight in order to pray.

V 43-44 Journeying about (Mark 1:38-39)

v 43-44. Jesus left early in the morning to a desert place, a rest from the crowds, but they soon came looking for Him. They wanted Him to stay, but He knew He must make use of His time to preach in as many synagogues in Galilee as possible. His main aim was to preach, just doing healing to authenticate His message or to show compassion. Many people reversed His objective.
