.1 Now when he had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum.

2And a certain centurion's servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die.

3And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant.

4And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, That he was worthy for whom he should do this:

5For he loveth our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue.

6Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof:

7Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed.

8For I also am a man set under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.

9When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

10And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant whole that had been sick.

11And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people.

12Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her.

13And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her,  Weep not.

14And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said,  Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.

15And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.

16And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people.

17And this rumour of him went forth throughout all Judaea, and throughout all the region round about.

18And the disciples of John shewed him of all these things.

19And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?

20When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?

21And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight.

22Then Jesus answering said unto them,  Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.

23 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.

24And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John,  What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind?

25 But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings' courts.

26 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet.

27 This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.

28 For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.

29And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.

30But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.

31 And the Lord said,  Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like?

32 They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept.

33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a devil.

34 The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!

35 But wisdom is justified of all her children.

36And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee's house, and sat down to meat.

37And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment,

38And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.

39Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.

40And Jesus answering said unto him,  Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee.  And he saith, Master, say on.

41 There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty.

42 And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?

43Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him,  Thou hast rightly judged.

44And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon,  Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head.

45 Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet.

46 My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment.

47 Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.

48And he said unto her,  Thy sins are forgiven.

49And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also?

50And he said to the woman,  Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace

7Wherefore neither thought I my selfe worthy to come vnto thee: but say in a worde, and my seruant shall bee healed.

8For I also am a man set vnder authoritie, hauing vnder mee souldiers: and I say vnto one, Goe, and he goeth: and to another, Come, and hee commeth: and to my seruant, Doe this, and he doeth it.

9When Iesus heard these things, hee marueiled at him, and turned him about, and saide vnto the people that followed him, I say vnto you, I haue not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

10And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the seruant whole that had bene sicke.

11 And it came to passe the day after, that he went into a citie called Naim: and many of his disciples went with him, and much people.

12Now when he came nigh to the gate of the citie, behold, there was a dead man caried out, the onely sonne of his mother, and shee was a widow: and much people of the citie was with her.

13And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and saide vnto her, Weepe not.

14And hee came and touched the beere (and they that bare him, stood still.) And he said, Yong man, I say vnto thee, Arise.

15And he that was dead, sate vp, and began to speake: and he deliuered him to his mother.

23 And blessed is he whosoeuer shall not be offended in me.

37And behold, a woman in the citie which was a sinner, when shee knew that Iesus sate at meat in the Pharisees house, brought an Alabaster boxe of ointment,

38And stood at his feet behind him, weeping, and began to wash his feete with teares, and did wipe them with the haires of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the oyntment.

39Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him, saw it, he spake within himselfe, saying, This man, if he were a Prophet, would haue knowen who, and what maner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.

40And Iesus answering, said vnto him, Simon, I haue somewhat to say vnto thee. And he saith, Master, say on.

41 There was a certaine creditour, which had two debtors: the one ought fiue hundred pence, and the other fiftie.

1 When he had finished all his words to the people, he entered Capernaum. 2 A centurion there had a slave who was ill and about to die, and he was valuable to him. 3 When he heard about Jesus, he sent elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and save the life of his slave. 4 They approached Jesus and strongly urged him to come, saying, "He deserves to have you do this for him, 5 for he loves our nation and he built the synagogue for us." 6 And Jesus went with them, but when he was only a short distance from the house, the centurion sent friends to tell him, "Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof. 7 Therefore, I did not consider myself worthy to come to you; but say the word and let my servant be healed. 8 For I too am a person subject to authority, with soldiers subject to me. And I say to one, 'Go,' and he goes; and to another, 'Come here,' and he comes; and to my slave, 'Do this,' and he does it." 9 When Jesus heard this he was amazed at him and, turning, said to the crowd following him, "I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith." 10 When the messengers returned to the house, they found the slave in good health. 11 Soon afterward he journeyed to a city called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd accompanied him. 12 As he drew near to the gate of the city, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. A large crowd from the city was with her. 13 When the Lord saw her, he was moved with pity for her and said to her, "Do not weep." 14 He stepped forward and touched the coffin; at this the bearers halted, and he said, "Young man, I tell you, arise!" 15 The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother. 16 Fear seized them all, and they glorified God, exclaiming, "A great prophet has arisen in our midst," and "God has visited his people." 17 This report about him spread through the whole of Judea and in all the surrounding region. 18 The disciples of John told him about all these things. John summoned two of his disciples 19 and sent them to the Lord to ask, "Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?" 20 When the men came to him, they said, "John the Baptist has sent us to you to ask, 'Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?'" 21 At that time he cured many of their diseases, sufferings, and evil spirits; he also granted sight to many who were blind. 22 And he said to them in reply, "Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the good news proclaimed to them. 23 And blessed is the one who takes no offense at me." 24 When the messengers of John had left, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John. "What did you go out to the desert to see - a reed swayed by the wind? 25 Then what did you go out to see? Someone dressed in fine garments? Those who dress luxuriously and live sumptuously are found in royal palaces. 26 Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 27 This is the one about whom scripture says: 'Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, he will prepare your way before you.' 28 I tell you, among those born of women, no one is greater than John; yet the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he." 29 (All the people who listened, including the tax collectors, and who were baptized with the baptism of John, acknowledged the righteousness of God; 30 but the Pharisees and scholars of the law, who were not baptized by him, rejected the plan of God for themselves.) 31 "Then to what shall I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? 32 They are like children who sit in the marketplace and call to one another, 'We played the flute for you, but you did not dance. We sang a dirge, but you did not weep.' 33 For John the Baptist came neither eating food nor drinking wine, and you said, 'He is possessed by a demon.' 34 The Son of Man came eating and drinking and you said, 'Look, he is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.' 35 But wisdom is vindicated by all her children." 36 A Pharisee invited him to dine with him, and he entered the Pharisee's house and reclined at table. 37 Now there was a sinful woman in the city who learned that he was at table in the house of the Pharisee. Bringing an alabaster flask of ointment, 38 she stood behind him at his feet weeping and began to bathe his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them, and anointed them with the ointment. 39 When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this he said to himself, "If this man were a prophet, he would know who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, that she is a sinner." 40 Jesus said to him in reply, "Simon, I have something to say to you." "Tell me, teacher," he said. 41 "Two people were in debt to a certain creditor; one owed five hundred days' wages and the other owed fifty. 42 Since they were unable to repay the debt, he forgave it for both. Which of them will love him more?" 43 Simon said in reply, "The one, I suppose, whose larger debt was forgiven." He said to him, "You have judged rightly." 44 Then he turned to the woman and said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? When I entered your house, you did not give me water for my feet, but she has bathed them with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You did not give me a kiss, but she has not ceased kissing my feet since the time I entered. 46 You did not anoint my head with oil, but she anointed my feet with ointment. 47 So I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven; hence, she has shown great love. But the one to whom little is forgiven, loves little." 48 He said to her, "Your sins are forgiven." 49 The others at table said to themselves, "Who is this who even forgives sins?" 50 But he said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."

The first parables may of been in defense and explanation of Jesus' actions. The parables are told in the house of Simon.

v 1-10. The Centurion Servant Matthew 8:5-13 The first Gentile to be received into the church was a Centurion named Cornetius Acts 10 Cornetius built the Jew's synagog in Capernaum whihc Jesus taught and healed the demoniac Mark 1: 21-23 This miracle and the next, after returning to Capernaum from preaching outside of town, reveal Jesus’ authority. See comments Mt. 8:5-13 concerning the centurion’s great faith that Jesus could heal by “remote control”.

v 11-18. Widow of Nain's son raised. This tells of one of the many that were raised from the dead as he commissioned the twelve Luke 7:22 Matt 10:8 11:1-19 Nain was about 25 miles southwest of Capernaum so it may have taken Him and the crowd following till the second day to arrive. He had compassion on the widow who had lost her only son, and stopping the funeral procession, He caused the dead young man to sit up and speak. People were in awe, thinking Jesus was like Elijah or Elisha. Those miracles were partly for the benefit of John’s disciples.
v 19-23. After his year of terrific preaching, John the Baptist thought Jesus would set up the kingdom immediately. Instead, he found himself in prison and wondering if in spite of the miracles, Jesus was truly the Messiah after all. Or was he the same one he had baptized? Jesus performed many miracles in front of them to report, so John could be assured this was the Messiah. He knew John would be reminded of Isa. 35:5,6 and 61:1. This would also give assurance to John’s disciples.
v 29,30. Luke inserted that humble people who had repented and were baptized by John accepted Jesus’ teaching, but the Pharisees and those who should have had the best understanding of the Law, rejected both John the Baptist and Christ.
v 31-35. Jesus said the Pharisees were like children playing music and upset that people didn’t dance to their tune. They thought John was too strict, Jesus too liberal.

V 36-50 The Sinful Woman. Nothing identifys this woman with Mary Madaline or Mary of Bethany. The anointing at Bethany John 12:1-8 was not the same as this one. This would of sort of been a public affair. It doesn't say how Jesus was sitting, but in that time their wasn't chairs as we have now, many just sat or lean on pillows. If Jesus was leaning on a pillow with his feet out in front of him, this would of made it easy for the women to approach his feet. She put everyone to shame in her bowing low in abject humility and devoted adoration at the feet of her Lord. Jesus was very tender in his attitude to women who made mistakes. John 4:18 ; 8:1-11
v 36-38. The Pharisee may have invited Jesus to this dinner party to seek causes against Him. This unnamed woman, possibly a prostitute, was not invited, but it was common for people to drop in uninvited to hear a rabbi speak. This expensive perfume was no doubt a sacrifice which she willing made to anoint Jesus, and ironically was what she may have used in plying her trade. His feet were exposed as He reclined to eat, and as she anointed them, her tears of repentance fell on them. She dried them with her hair, as a servant might do, and reverently kissed them repeatedly.
v 39. Jesus knew his host’s disgust in allowing this sinful woman to touch Him.
v 40-43. Jesus posed a parable in which the Pharisee, Simon, concluded that the one who had been forgiven the biggest debt would love the most.
v 44-50. Jesus called to Simon’s attention that he had not even performed the customary courtesy to a guest, but the woman had shown extreme consideration. While not saying Simon was not a sinner, in public opinion this woman was a greater sinner. So as people looked upon her sin, she had the most to forgive and loved the most. Then he told her that her sins were forgiven because of her faith. People who did not recognize Jesus as Messiah were perplexed at Him forgiving sins.
