KING JAMES BIBLE

1 THUS saith the Lord; For three transgressions of Moab, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime:
2 But I will send a fire upon Moab, and it shall devour the palaces of Kerioth: and Moab shall die with tumult, with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet:
3 And I will cut off the judge from the midst thereof, and will slay all the princes thereof with him, saith the Lord.
4 Thus saith the Lord; For three transgressions of Judah, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have despised the law of the Lord, and have not kept his commandments, and their lies caused them to err, after the which their fathers have walked:
5 But I will send a fire upon Judah, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem.
6 Thus saith the Lord; For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they sold the righteous for silver, and the poor for a pair of shoes;
7 That pant after the dust of the earth on the head of the poor, and turn aside the way of the meek: and a man and his father will go in unto the same maid, to profane my holy name:
8 And they lay themselves down upon clothes laid to pledge by every altar, and they drink the wine of the condemned in the house of their god.
9 Yet destroyed I the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars, and he was strong as the oaks; yet I destroyed his fruit from above, and his roots from beneath.
10 Also I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and led you forty years through the wilderness, to possess the land of the Amorite.
11 And I raised up of your sons for prophets, and of your young men for Nazarites. Is it not even thus, O ye children of Israel? saith the Lord.
12 But ye gave the Nazarites wine to drink; and commanded the prophets, saying, Prophesy not.
13 Behold, I am pressed under you, as a cart is pressed that is full of sheaves.
14 Therefore the flight shall perish from the swift, and the strong shall not strengthen his force, neither shall the mighty deliver himself:
15 Neither shall he stand that handleth the bow; and he that is swift of foot shall not deliver himself: neither shall he that rideth the horse deliver himself.
16 And he that is courageous among the mighty shall flee away naked in that day, saith the Lord.

KING JAMES 1611

1 Thus sayth the Lord, For three transgressions of Moab, and for foure, I wil not turne away the punishment thereof, because hee burnt the bones of the King of Edom into lime.

2 But I will send a fire vpon Moab, and it shall deuoure the palaces of Kerioth, and Moab shall die with tumult, with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet:

3 And I will cut off the iudge from the middest thereof, and wil slay all the princes thereof with him, sayeth the Lord.

4 Thus sayth the Lord, For three transgressions of Iudah, and for foure, I will not turne away the punishment thereof; because they haue despised the Law of the Lord, and haue not kept his Commandements, and their lies caused them to erre, after the which their fathers haue walked.

5 But I will send a fire vpon Iudah, and it shall deuoure the palaces of Ierusalem.

6 Thus sayth the Lord, For three transgressions of Israel, and for foure, I will not turne away the punishment thereof; because they solde the righteous for siluer, and the poore for a paire of shooes:

7 That pant after the dust of the earth on the head of the poore, and turne aside the way of the meeke; and a man and his father will goe in vnto the same maid, to profane my holy Name.

8 And they lay themselues downe vpon clothes laide to pledge, by euery Altar, and they drinke the wine of the condemned in the house of their God.

9 Yet destroyed I the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of the Cedars, and hee was strong as the okes, yet I destroyed his fruite from aboue, and his rootes from beneath.

10 Also I brought you vp from the land of Egypt, and ledde you fourtie yeeres through the wildernesse, to possesse the land of the Amorite.

11 And I raised vp of your sonnes for Prophets, and of your young men for Nazarites. Is it not euen thus, O ye children of Israel, saith the Lord ?

12 But ye gaue the Nazarites wine to drinke, and commaunded the Prophets, saying, Prophecie not.

13 Behold, I am pressed vnder you, as a cart is pressed that is ful of sheaues.

14 Therefore the flight shall perish from the swift, and the strong shall not strengthen his force, neither shall the mightie deliuer himselfe:

15 Neither shall hee stand that handleth the bow, and hee that is swift of foote, shall not deliuer himselfe, neither shall hee that rideth the horse, deliuer himselfe.

16 And hee that is couragious among the mighty, shall flee away naked in that day, saith the Lord.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 Thus says the LORD: For three crimes of Moab, and for four, I will not revoke my word; Because he burned to ashes the bones of Edom's king,

2 I will send fire upon Moab, to devour the castles of Kerioth; Moab shall meet death amid uproar and shouts and trumpet blasts.

3 I will root out the judge from her midst, and her princes I will slay with him, says the LORD.

4 Thus says the LORD: For three crimes of Judah, and for four, I will not revoke my word; Because they spurned the law of the LORD, and did not keep his statutes; Because the lies which their fathers followed have led them astray,

5 I will send fire upon Judah, to devour the castles of Jerusalem.

6 Thus says the LORD: For three crimes of Israel, and for four, I will not revoke my word; Because they sell the just man for silver, and the poor man for a pair of sandals.

7 They trample the heads of the weak into the dust of the earth, and force the lowly out of the way. Son and father go to the same prostitute, profaning my holy name.

8 Upon garments taken in pledge they recline beside any altar; And the wine of those who have been fined they drink in the house of their god.

9 Yet it was I who destroyed the Amorites before them, who were as tall as the cedars, and as strong as the oak trees. I destroyed their fruit above, and their roots beneath.

10 It was I who brought you up from the land of Egypt, and who led you through the desert for forty years, to occupy the land of the Amorites:

11 I who raised up prophets among your sons, and nazirites among your young men. Is this not so, O men of Israel? says the LORD.

12 But you gave the nazirites wine to drink, and commanded the prophets not to prophesy.

13 Beware, I will crush you into the ground as a wagon crushes when laden with sheaves.

14 Flight shall perish from the swift, and the strong man shall not retain his strength; The warrior shall not save his life,

15 nor the bowman stand his ground; The swift of foot shall not escape, nor the horseman save his life.

16 And the most stouthearted of warriors shall flee naked on that day, says the LORD.

COMMENTARIE

v 1-3. Moab desecrated Edom’s graves, disrespectfully burning the bones of the king into fine powder, so cities, people, princes would be destroyed by the Assyrians.

v 4,5. Gentiles had violated the everlasting covenant with Noah, Gen. 9:5-17, but Judah despised & disobeyed Moses laws, so destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar 586 BC.

v 6-8. Finally, Israel had 1 sold into slavery honest people without waiting for them to pay debts, and poor who couldn’t pay even minor debts, v6, courts 2 were denying justice, v 7. 3 sexual sin of father and son having sex with same girl, either servant or temple prostitute, v7. Lev. 18; 4 abuse of collateral, 8a and 5 idolatry, 8b.

v 9-11. After naming seven sins, God does not tell judgment but contrasts how He had destroyed the mighty enemies of the land; His care delivering from Egypt and 40 years in the wilderness; He had raised up prophets and Nazarites among them.

v 12. Israel added two more sins, made Nazarites to drink and rebuked prophets.

v 13-16. They had crushed God, but He would crush them. ( Amos name, 1:1) None of the army could save his own life, the swift, strong, warrior, archer, fast running soldiers or horsemen, and even the brave, would drop weapons and cloaks to flee in panic. Seven groups are listed just as the seven sins were listed, v 6-8. Those things came to pass with the Assyrian captivity, 722 BC. See 2 Ki. 17:1-23. Surrounding nations had been mentioned first, but Judah and Israel had rebelled in spite of all the wonders God had done for them.
