1 HEAR this word, ye kine of Bashan, that are in the mountain of Samaria, which oppress the poor, which crush the needy, which say to their masters, Bring, and let us drink.
2 The Lord God hath sworn by his holiness, that, lo, the days shall come upon you, that he will take you away with hooks, and your posterity with fishhooks.
3 And ye shall go out at the breaches, every cow at that which is before her; and ye shall cast them into the palace, saith the Lord.
4 Come to Beth-el, and transgress; at Gilgal multiply transgression; and bring your sacrifices every morning, and your tithes after three years:
5 And offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving with leaven, and proclaim and publish the free offerings: for this liketh you, O ye children of Israel, saith the Lord God.
6 And I also have given you cleanness of teeth in all your cities, and want of bread in all your places: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the Lord.
7 And also I have withholden the rain from you, when there were yet three months to the harvest: and I caused it to rain upon one city, and caused it not to rain upon another city: one piece was rained upon, and the piece whereupon it rained not withered.
8 So two or three cities wandered unto one city, to drink water; but they were not satisfied: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the Lord.
9 I have smitten you with blasting and mildew: when your gardens and your vineyards and your fig trees and your olive trees increased, the palmerworm devoured them: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the Lord.
10 I have sent among you the pestilence after the manner of Egypt: your young men have I slain with the sword, and have taken away your horses; and I have made the stink of your camps to come up unto your nostrils: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the Lord.
11 I have overthrown some of you, as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and ye were as a firebrand plucked out of the burning: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the Lord.
12 Therefore thus will I do unto thee, O Israel: and because I will do this unto thee, prepare to meet thy God, O Israel.
13 For, lo, he that formeth the mountains, and createth the wind, and declareth unto man what is his thought, that maketh the morning darkness, and treadeth upon the high places of the earth, The Lord, The God of hosts, is his name.
1 Heare this word yea kine of Bashan, that are in the mountaine of Samaria, which oppresse the poore, which crush the needy, which say to their masters; Bring, and let vs drinke.
2 The Lord God hath sworne by his holinesse, that loe, the dayes shall come vpon you, that he will take you away with hookes, and your posteritie with fish-hookes.
3 And yee shall goe out at the breaches, euery Cow at that which is before her, and yee shall cast them into the palace, saith the Lord.
4 Come to Bethel and transgresse, at Gilgal multiplie transgression; and bring your sacrifices euery morning, and your tithes after three yeeres.
5 And offer a sacrifice of thanksgiuing with leauen, and proclaime and publish the free offrings; for this liketh you, O yee children of Israel, saith the Lord God.
6 And I also haue giuen you cleannesse of teeth in all your cities, and want of bread in all your places: yet haue yee not returned vnto me, saith the Lord.
7 And also I haue withholden the raine from you, when there were yet three moneths to the haruest, and I caused it to raine vpon one citie, and caused it not to raine vpon an other city: one piece was rained vpon, & the piece wherupon it rained not, withered.
8 So two or three cities wandered vnto one citie, to drinke water; but they were not satisfied: yet haue yee not returned vnto me, saith the Lord.
9 I haue smitten you with blasting and mildew; when your gardens and your vineyards, and your fig trees, and your oliue trees increased, the palmer worme deuoured them: yet haue yee not returned vnto me, saith the Lord.
10 I haue sent among you the pestilence, after the maner of Egypt: your yongmen haue I slain with the sword, and haue taken away your horses, & I haue made the stinke of your campes to come vp vnto your nostrils, yet haue ye not returned vnto me, saith the Lord.
11 I haue ouerthrowen some of you, as God ouerthrew Sodome & Gomorrah, and yee were as a firebrand pluckt out of the burning: yet haue yee not returned vnto me, saith the Lord.
12 Therefore thus will I doe vnto thee, O Israel: and because I will doe this vnto thee, prepare to meete thy God, O Israel.
13 For loe, he that formeth the mountaines, and createth the wind, and declareth vnto man, what is his thought, that maketh the morning darkenesse, and treadeth vpon the high places of the earth: the Lord, the God of hostes is his Name.

1 Hear this word, women of the mountain of Samaria, you cows of Bashan, You who oppress the weak and abuse the needy; Who say to your lords, "Bring drink for us!"
2 The Lord GOD has sworn by his holiness: Truly the days are coming upon you When they shall drag you away with hooks, the last of you with fishhooks;
3 You shall go out through the breached walls each by the most direct way, And you shall be cast into the mire, says the LORD.
4 Come to Bethel and sin, to Gilgal, and sin the more; Each morning bring your sacrifices, every third day, your tithes;
5 Burn leavened food as a thanksgiving sacrifice, proclaim publicly your freewill offerings, For so you love to do, O men of Israel, says the Lord GOD.
6 Though I have made your teeth clean of food in all your cities, and have made bread scarce in all your dwellings, Yet you returned not to me, says the LORD.
7 Though I also withheld the rain from you when the harvest was still three months away; I sent rain upon one city but not upon another; One field was watered by rain, but another without rain dried up;
8 Though two or three cities staggered to one city for water that did not quench their thirst; Yet you returned not to me, says the LORD.
9 I struck you with blight and searing wind; your many gardens and vineyards, your fig trees and olive trees the locust devoured; Yet you returned not to me, says the LORD.
10 I sent upon you a pestilence like that of Egypt, and with the sword I slew your young men; Your horses I let be captured, to your nostrils I brought the stench of your camps; Yet you returned not to me, says the LORD.
11 I brought upon you such upheaval as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah: you were like a brand plucked from the fire; Yet you returned not to me, says the LORD.
12 So now I will deal with you in my own way, O Israel! and since I will deal thus with you, prepare to meet your God, O Israel:
13 Him who formed the mountains, and created the wind, and declares to man his thoughts; Who made the dawn and the darkness, and strides upon the heights of the earth: The LORD, the God of hosts by name.
v 1. These “cows” are the women living in luxury, oppressing their husbands to ruthlessly exploit the weak to supply their intoxicating life styles. BASHAN: the region east of the Sea of Galilee, famous for its rich pasture and fattened herds, to which Amos likens the indolent women of Samaria.
v 2,3. The breaks in the city wall would be so many that these luxury women would be forced through them and led to Assyria single file with hooks on ropes, and because of this rough treatment, some would die along the way. ARMON: A foreign country: Some understand it of Armenia.
V 4-5 THE SANCTUARIE'S INVITATION of the northern kingdom is ironical. Pilgrimages to the shrines of Bethel and Gilgal were the more displeasing to God because they were contrary to his will and ineffective toward improvement of morals.
v 4,5. Amos sarcastically invites people to come to the improper place of worship and to worship in the wrong manner, hypocritically to impress men but deny God.
v 6-11 God had warned the results of disobedience and it is fulfilled v 6, famine; caused by -
v 7, 8, sporadic drought, but they didn’t turn to God; v 9, blight, mildew, locust, but still no repentance;
v 10, crowding to walled cities brought on plagues like seen in Egypt, military defeat with young men killed and horses destroyed, but still they did not turn to God;
v 11, devastation of many cities, the entire nation barely escaping destruction, but still unrepentant.
PESTILENCE LIKE THAT OF EGYPT: plagues were well known in Egypt; Deut 7:15; 28:27,60. STENCH OF YOUR CAMPS: caused by the unburied bodies.
v 12,13. Therefore, Israel was to prepare to face God’s judgment. The One who created all things is moving against them as the Lord of all forces, and there is no escaping His judgment.
