Amos 07

1 The king's mowing: the first mowing, a portion of which was payable to the king as a tax.
4 Fire: understood by many as a burning drought.
7 Plummet in hand: signifying that God is about to withdraw his mercy from his people and that the nation is to be measured for destruction.
14-15 Amos denies that he belonged to the class of professional prophets; his vocation is due to the personal intervention of the Lord.

KING JAMES BIBLE

1 THUS hath the Lord God shewed unto me; and, behold, he formed grasshoppers in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and, lo, it was the latter growth after the king’s mowings.
2 And it came to pass, that when they had made an end of eating the grass of the land, then I said, O Lord God, forgive, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small.
3 The Lord repented for this: It shall not be, saith the Lord.
4 Thus hath the Lord God shewed unto me: and, behold, the Lord God called to contend by fire, and it devoured the great deep, and did eat up a part.
5 Then said I, O Lord God, cease, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small.
6 The Lord repented for this: This also shall not be, saith the Lord God.
7 Thus he shewed me: and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand.
8 And the Lord said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more:
9 And the high places of Isaac shall be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.
10 Then Amaziah the priest of Beth-el sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able to bear all his words.
11 For thus Amos saith, Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of their own land.
12 Also Amaziah said unto Amos, O thou seer, go, flee thee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there:
13 But prophesy not again any more at Beth-el: for it is the king’s chapel, and it is the king’s court.
14 Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet’s son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit:
15 And the Lord took me as I followed the flock, and the Lord said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel.
16 Now therefore hear thou the word of the Lord: Thou sayest, Prophesy not against Israel, and drop not thy word against the house of Isaac.
17 Therefore thus saith the Lord; Thy wife shall be an harlot in the city, and thy sons and thy daughters shall fall by the sword, and thy land shall be divided by line; and thou shalt die in a polluted land: and Israel shall surely go into captivity forth of his land.

KING JAMES 1611

1Thus hath the Lord God shewed vnto me, and behold, he formed grassehoppers in the beginning of the shooting vp of the latter grouth: and loe, it was the latter grouth after the kings mowings.

2And it came to passe, that when they had made an ende of eating the grasse of the land, then I said; O Lord God, forgiue, I beseech thee, by whom shal Iacob arise? for he is small.

3The Lord repented for this. It shall not be, saith the Lord.

4 Thus hath the Lord God shewed vnto me; and behold, the Lord God called to contend by fire, and it deuoured the great deepe, and did eate vp a part.

5Then said I, O Lord God , cease, I beseech thee, by whom shal Iacob arise? for he is small.

6The Lord repented for this. This also shall not bee, saith the Lord God.

7 Thus hee shewed mee, and behold, the Lord stood vpon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand.

8And the Lord said vnto mee, Amos, what seest thou? And I sayd, A plumb-line. Then sayd the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumb-line in the midst of my people Israel, I will not againe passe by them any more.

9And the high places of Isaac shall be desolate, and the Sanctuaries of Israel shalbe laide waste: and I will rise against the house of Ieroboam with the sword.

10 Then Amaziah the Priest of Beth-el sent to Ieroboam king of Israel, saying; Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able to beare all his words.

11For thus Amos saith, Ieroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captiue, out of their owne land.

12Also Amaziah said vnto Amos, O thou Seer, goe, flee thee away into the land of Iudah, and there eate bread, and prophecie there.

13But prophecie not againe any more at Beth-el: for it is the Kings Chappell, and it is the Kings Court.

14 Then answered Amos, and sayde to Amaziah; I was no Prophet, neither was I a Prophets sonne, but I was an heardman, and a gatherer of Sycomore fruit.

15And the Lord tooke me as I followed the flocke, and the Lord said vnto me, Goe, prophecie vnto my people Israel.

16 Now therefore heare thou the worde of the Lord; Thou sayest, Prophecie not against Israel, and drop not thy word against the house of Isaac.

17Therfore thus sayth the Lord; Thy wife shall be an harlot in the city, and thy sonnes and thy daughters shall fall by the sword, and thy land shall be diuided by line: and thou shalt die in a polluted land, and Israel shall surely goe into captiuitie foorth of his land.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 This is what the Lord GOD showed me: He was forming a locust swarm when the late growth began to come up (the late growth after the king's mowing).

2 While they were eating all the grass in the land, I said: Forgive, O Lord GOD! How can Jacob stand? He is so small!

3 And the LORD repented of this. "It shall not be," said the Lord GOD.

4 Then the Lord GOD showed me this: he called for a judgment by fire. It had devoured the great abyss, and was consuming the land,

5 when I said: Cease, O Lord GOD! How can Jacob stand? He is so small!

6 The LORD repented of this. "This also shall not be," said the Lord GOD.

7 Then the Lord GOD showed me this: he was standing by a wall, plummet in hand.

8 The LORD asked me, "What do you see, Amos?" And when I answered, "A plummet," the Lord said: See, I will lay the plummet in the midst of my people Israel; I will forgive them no longer.

9 The high places of Isaac shall be laid waste, and the sanctuaries of Israel made desolate; I will attack the house of Jeroboam with the sword.

10 Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, sent word to Jeroboam, king of Israel: "Amos has conspired against you here within Israel; the country cannot endure all his words.

11 For this is what Amos says: Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be exiled from its land."

12 To Amos, Amaziah said: "Off with you, visionary, flee to the land of Judah! There earn your bread by prophesying,

13 but never again prophesy in Bethel; for it is the king's sanctuary and a royal temple."

14 Amos answered Amaziah, "I was no prophet, nor have I belonged to a company of prophets; I was a shepherd and a dresser of sycamores.

15 The LORD took me from following the flock, and said to me, Go, prophesy to my people Israel.

16 Now hear the word of the LORD!" You say: prophesy not against Israel, preach not against the house of Isaac.

17 Now thus says the LORD: Your wife shall be made a harlot in the city, and your sons and daughters shall fall by the sword; Your land shall be divided by measuring line, and you yourself shall die in an unclean land; Israel shall be exiled far from its land.

COMMENTARIE

v 1-3. Amos was informed in vision that God was preparing grasshoppers, rather, locusts to destroy the crop after the king got his share. Seeing how they were stripping the land and people would starve, he persuaded God to withhold deserved judgment. THE LOCUST: These judgments by locusts and fire, which by the prophet's intercession, were moderated, signify the former invasions of the assyrians " A fanatical group of Jewish nationalists in the first century A. D." under Phul and Theglathphalasar, before the utter desolation of Israel by Sabmanasar.

v 4-6. In vision Amos saw such terrible drouth that fire was sweeping the land. He pled for the people and again persuaded God to avert this judgment.

v 7-9. In the third vision, Amos was shown a plumb line. Israel had been built true but were out of plumb, so this time destruction is inevitable. Both the political and religious structures of the Northern Kingdom would be destroyed by the God’s sword.

/v10-17. It is not known how long Amos was at Bethel

v 10-13. Amaziah ( "Jehovah is mighty" "The name of four men in the Old Testament) was priest of the false altar Jeroboam had set up at Bethel. He told Jeroboam Amos had said, instead of God had said, and accused him of being a conspirator to destroy the king and the nation to be taken into captivity. Then he told Amos to leave and go to Judah, implying he was prophesying for pay. By authority of his priesthood he commands Amos not to prophesy anymore at the religious,  political areas of the Northern Kingdom. JEROBOAM SHALL DIE BY THE SWORD: The prophet did not say this; but the Lord would rise up against the house of Jeroboam with the sword: which was verified, when Zacharias, the son and successor of Jeroboam, was slain by the sword.

v 14,15. Amos hadn’t been to prophet’s school or even under a father tutor for a prophet. He was content raising sheep and tending his trees. Those trees grew 25-50’  high and bore a fig like fruit 3 or 4 times a year. The two jobs were compatible. It was because the Lord told him to go that he came to prophecy in Israel. I AM NOT A PROPHET: That is, I am not a prophet by education: nor is prophesying my calling or profession: but I am a herdsman, whom God was pleased to send hither to prophesy to Israel.

v 16,17. Amaziah could have repented, but he chose to reject Amos’ message from the Lord so he would suffer the full extent of the divine sentence. His wealthy wife forced to be a prostitute, children killed by sword, his land divided by foreigners and he would die in a pagan country.
