Job 42

KING JAMES BIBLE

1THEN Job answered the Lord, and said,
2 I know that thou canst do every thing, and that no thought can be withholden from thee.
3 Who is he that hideth counsel without knowledge? therefore have I uttered that I understood not; things too wonderful for me, which I knew not.
4 Hear, I beseech thee, and I will speak: I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me.
5 I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee.
6 Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.
7 And it was so, that after the Lord had spoken these words unto Job, the Lord said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends: for ye have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job hath.
8 Therefore take unto you now seven bullocks and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering; and my servant Job shall pray for you: for him will I accept: lest I deal with you after your folly, in that ye have not spoken of me the thing which is right, like my servant Job.
9 So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went, and did according as the Lord commanded them: the Lord also accepted Job.
10 And the Lord turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before.
11 Then came there unto him all his brethren, and all his sisters, and all they that had been of his acquaintance before, and did eat bread with him in his house: and they bemoaned him, and comforted him over all the evil that the Lord had brought upon him: every man also gave him a piece of money, and every one an earring of gold.
12 So the Lord blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning: for he had fourteen thousand sheep, and six thousand camels, and a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand she asses.
13 He had also seven sons and three daughters.
14 And he called the name of the first, Jemima; and the name of the second, Kezia; and the name of the third, Keren-happuch.
15 And in all the land were no women found so fair as the daughters of Job: and their father gave them inheritance among their brethren.
16 After this lived Job an hundred and forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons’ sons, even four generations.

17 So Job died, being old and full of days

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 Then Job answered the LORD and said:

2 I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be hindered.

3 I have dealt with great things that I do not understand; things too wonderful for me, which I cannot know.

5 I had heard of you by word of mouth, but now my eye has seen you.

6 Therefore I disown what I have said, and repent in dust and ashes.

7 And it came to pass after the LORD had spoken these words to Job, that the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, "I am angry with you and with your two friends; for you have not spoken rightly concerning me, as has my servant Job.

8 Now, therefore, take seven bullocks and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer up a holocaust for yourselves; and let my servant Job pray for you; for his prayer I will accept, not to punish you severely. For you have not spoken rightly concerning me, as has my servant Job."

9 Then Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite, went and did as the LORD had commanded them. And the LORD accepted the intercession of Job.

10 Also, the LORD restored the prosperity of Job, after he had prayed for his friends; the LORD even gave to Job twice as much as he had before.

11 Then all his brethren and his sisters came to him, and all his former acquaintances, and they dined with him in his house. They condoled with him and comforted him for all the evil which the LORD had brought upon him; and each one gave him a piece of money and a gold ring.

12 Thus the LORD blessed the latter days of Job more than his earlier ones. For he had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand she-asses.

13 And he had seven sons and three daughters,

14 of whom he called the first Jemimah, the second Keziah, and the third Keren-happuch.

15 In all the land no other women were as beautiful as the daughters of Job; and their father gave them an inheritance among their brethren.

16 After this, Job lived a hundred and forty years; and he saw his children, his grandchildren, and even his great-grandchildren.

17 Then Job died, old and full of years.

COMMENTARIE

v 1-3. Totally humbled, especially after the descriptions of those two powerful beasts, Job admits the sovereignty of God. God’s question is, “Who has obscured My counsel without having knowledge of it?” Job admitted he had spoken rashly of things which were too wonderful for his comprehension. He no longer is justifying himself or questioning God’s ability to govern the world in the best possible way.

In the New American Bible there is no verse 4

v ,5. Job had demanded that God speak to him and answer him, 13:22; 31:35. God demanded the same from him, 38:3; 40:2. In what amounted to an admission he could not answer God, Job acknowledges he had only heard of the things of creation and the continuation of natural things following creation, but now his spiritual eyes are open to see the character of God (not His form in the whirlwind).
v 6. With this new view of God, he is ashamed of the things he had said. He not only confesses his unworthiness, but repents, exhibiting the customary deep remorse. He had placed ashes on his sores, but now he tosses dust and ashes over himself. He no longer has bitterness and pride, but total submission to the perfect will of God.
v 7. God addressed Eliphaz, probably the older and representative of the other two. Elihu had been angry with the three, 32:3, and now God is angry with them for  unjustly accusing Job and limiting God to wrath. Job need not repent of the things for which he was accused, because he was innocent of those. He had contended with God and repented when he saw his error, but they had not, and needed to.
v 8,9. How shocking to them, to have to go to the one they had criticized to make their sacrifice.  He was fully reinstated in God’s favor, so God would accept his prayer, Ps. 66:18. Job had asked for a mediator, but they would not help. They had not asked for a mediator, but their victim becomes their mediator. Six times in this book God refers to him as “my servant Job”, four times just in this chapter. They obeyed and God accepted Job’s prayer for them.
v 10. God forgave Job when he repented. If he had enmity against his friends,  God forgave that when he prayed for his friends, Matt. 6:15. The Lord turned the captivity of Job, meaning He loosed him from the hold Satan had over him, and he was healed instantly, and probably unblemished, at that moment. The Lord turned the captivity of Job years before he made that promise to the Israelites, Deut. 30:3. Some think Job was given twice as much of everything but the children, but even with them, the number is doubled in eternity, counting those who had already gone on.
v 11. Job’s miraculous healing brought an abundance of well wishers to his house, although they weren’t there when he really needed them. The many gifts they brought were a start in his material restoration.
v 12. The restoration of his fortune began right away, and as he used the gifts to purchase animals, (and maybe borrowed?) God blessed the increase for years. That Job now prospers does not change what has developed through the book, that God can bless or withhold it to either righteous or wicked as He sovereignly chooses to do.
v 13-15. It is interesting that only three girls of his seventeen children are named, and also that they received inheritance in those days. They were beautiful, and many other of Laban’s relatives were beautiful, Sarah, Rebekah, Rachel and others.
v 16,17. Job lived 140 years after his probable 70, and saw four generations. Misfortune does not mean God is forsaking or punishing, but is developing believers.
