2nd Samuel 05

KING JAMES BIBLE

1 Then came all the tribes of Israel to David unto Hebron, and spake, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh.

2 Also in time past, when Saul was king over us, thou wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the Lord said to thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be a captain over Israel.

3 So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made a league with them in Hebron before the Lord: and they anointed David king over Israel.

4 David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years.

5 In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months: and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years over all Israel and Judah.

6 And the king and his men went to Jerusalem unto the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land: which spake unto David, saying, Except thou take away the blind and the lame, thou shalt not come in hither: thinking, David cannot come in hither.

7 Nevertheless David took the strong hold of Zion: the same is the city of David.

8 And David said on that day, Whosoever getteth up to the gutter, and smiteth the Jebusites, and the lame and the blind that are hated of David's soul, he shall be chief and captain. Wherefore they said, The blind and the lame shall not come into the house.

9 So David dwelt in the fort, and called it the city of David. And David built round about from Millo and inward.

10 And David went on, and grew great, and the Lord God of hosts was with him.

11 And Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, and carpenters, and masons: and they built David an house.

12 And David perceived that the Lord had established him king over Israel, and that he had exalted his kingdom for his people Israel's sake.

13 And David took him more concubines and wives out of Jerusalem, after he was come from Hebron: and there were yet sons and daughters born to David.

14 And these be the names of those that were born unto him in Jerusalem; Shammuah, and Shobab, and Nathan, and Solomon,

15 Ibhar also, and Elishua, and Nepheg, and Japhia,

16 And Elishama, and Eliada, and Eliphalet.

17 But when the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines came up to seek David; and David heard of it, and went down to the hold.

18 The Philistines also came and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim.

19 And David enquired of the Lord, saying, Shall I go up to the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the Lord said unto David, Go up: for I will doubtless deliver the Philistines into thine hand.

20 And David came to Baalperazim, and David smote them there, and said, The Lord hath broken forth upon mine enemies before me, as the breach of waters. Therefore he called the name of that place Baalperazim.

21 And there they left their images, and David and his men burned them.

22 And the Philistines came up yet again, and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim.

23 And when David enquired of the Lord, he said, Thou shalt not go up; but fetch a compass behind them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees.

24 And let it be, when thou hearest the sound of a going in the tops of the mulberry trees, that then thou shalt bestir thyself: for then shall the Lord go out before thee, to smite the host of the Philistines.

25 And David did so, as the Lord had commanded him; and smote the Philistines from Geba until thou come to Gazer.

KING JAMES 1611

1Then came all the tribes of Israel to Dauid vnto Hebron, and spake, saying, Behold, we are thy bone, and thy flesh.

2Also in time past when Saul was king ouer vs, thou wast hee that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the Lord said to thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt bee a captaine ouer Israel.

3So all the Elders of Israel came to the King to Hebron, and King Dauid made a league with them in Hebron before the Lord: and they anointed Dauid King ouer Israel.

4 Dauid was thirtie yeeres old when he began to reigne, and he reigned fourtie yeeres.

5In Hebron he reigned ouer Iudah seuen yeeres, and sixe moneths: and in Ierusalem he reigned thirty and three yeres ouer all Israel and Iudah.

6 And the king and his men went to Ierusalem, vnto the Iebusites, the inhabitants of the land: which spake vnto Dauid, saying, Except thou take away the blind and the lame, thou shalt not come in hither: Thinking, Dauid cannot come in hither.

7Neuerthelesse, Dauid tooke the strong hold of Zion: the same is the citie of Dauid.

8And Dauid said on that day, Whosoeuer getteth vp to the gutter, and smiteth the Iebusites, and the lame, and the blind, that are hated of Dauids soule, he shall be chiefe and captaine: Wherefore they said, The blind and the lame shall not come into the house.

9So Dauid dwelt in the fort, and called it the citie of Dauid, and Dauid built round about, from Millo and inward.

10And Dauid went on, and grew great, and the Lord God of hosts was with him.

11 And Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to Dauid, and Cedar trees, and carpenters, and Masons: and they built Dauid an house.

12And Dauid perceiued that the Lord had established him King ouer Israel, and that he had exalted his kingdome for his people Israels sake.

13 And Dauid tooke him mo concubines and wiues out of Ierusalem, after he was come from Hebron, and there were yet sonnes and daughters borne to Dauid.

14And these be the names of those that were borne vnto him in Ierusalem, Shammua, & Shobab, and Nathan, and Solomon:

15Ibhar also, and Elishua, and Nepheg, and Iaphia,

16And Elishama, and Eliada, and Eliphalet.

17 But when the Philistines heard that they had anointed Dauid King ouer Israel, all the Philistines came vp to seeke Dauid, and Dauid heard of it, and went downe to the hold.

18The Philistines also came, and spred themselues in the valley of Rephaim.

19And Dauid enquired of the Lord, saying, Shall I goe vp to the Philistines? wilt thou deliuer them into mine hand? And the Lord said vnto Dauid, Goe vp: for I will doubtlesse deliuer the Philistines into thine hand.

20And Dauid came to Baal-Perazim, and Dauid smote them there, and said, The Lord hath broken foorth vpon mine enemies before me, as the breach of waters. Therefore he called the name of that place, Baal-Perazim.

21And there they left their images, and Dauid and his men burnt them.

22 And the Philistines came vp yet againe, and spread themselues in the valley of Rephaim.

23And when Dauid enquired of the Lord, he said, Thou shalt not goe vp: but fetch a compasse behinde them, and come vpon them ouer against the Mulbery trees.

24And let it be when thou hearest the sound of a going in the tops of the mulbery trees, that then thou shalt bestirre thy selfe: for then shal the Lord goe out before thee, to smite the host of the Philistines.

25And Dauid did so, as the Lord had commaunded him; and smote the Philistines from Geba, vntil thou come to Gazer.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 All the tribes of Israel came to David in Hebron and said: "Here we are, your bone and your flesh.

2 In days past, when Saul was our king, it was you who led the Israelites out and brought them back. And the LORD said to you, 'You shall shepherd my people Israel and shall be commander of Israel.'"

3 When all the elders of Israel came to David in Hebron, King David made an agreement with them there before the LORD, and they anointed him king of Israel.

4 David was thirty years old when he became king, and he reigned for forty years:

5 seven years and six months in Hebron over Judah, and thirty-three years in Jerusalem over all Israel and Judah.

6 Then the king and his men set out for Jerusalem against the Jebusites who inhabited the region. David was told, "You cannot enter here: the blind and the lame will drive you away!" which was their way of saying, "David cannot enter here."

7 But David did take the stronghold of Zion, which is the City of David.

8 On that day David said: "All who wish to attack the Jebusites must strike at them through the water shaft. The lame and the blind shall be the personal enemies of David." That is why it is said, "The blind and the lame shall not enter the palace."

9 David then dwelt in the stronghold, which was called the City of David; he built up the area from Millo to the palace.

10 David grew steadily more powerful, for the LORD of hosts was with him.

11 Hiram, king of Tyre, sent ambassadors to David; he furnished cedar wood, as well as carpenters and masons, who built a palace for David.

12 And David knew that the LORD had established him as king of Israel and had exalted his rule for the sake of his people Israel.

13 David took more concubines and wives in Jerusalem after he had come from Hebron, and more sons and daughters were born to him in Jerusalem.

14 These are the names of those who were born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon,

15 Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia,

16 Elishama, Baaliada, and Eliphelet.

17 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king of Israel, they all took the field in search of him. On hearing this, David went down to the refuge.

18 The Philistines came and overran the valley of Rephaim.

19 David inquired of the LORD, "Shall I attack the Philistines - will you deliver them into my grip?" The LORD replied to David, "Attack, for I will surely deliver the Philistines into your grip."

20 David then went to Baal-perazim, where he defeated them. He said, "The LORD has scattered my enemies before me like waters that have broken free." That is why the place is called Baal-perazim.

21 They abandoned their gods there, and David and his men carried them away.

22 But the Philistines came up again and overran the valley of Rephaim.

23 So David inquired of the LORD, who replied: "You must not attack frontally, but circle their rear and meet them before the mastic trees.

24 When you hear a sound of marching in the tops of the mastic trees, act decisively, for the LORD will have gone forth before you to attack the camp of the Philistines."

25 David obeyed the LORD'S command and routed the Philistines from Gibeon as far as Gezer.

COMMENTARIE

v 1-5. Opposition to David collapsed with the death of Ishbosheth, & a delegation of all Israel turned to David and acknowledged that he was called of God and had performed the duties of a king better than Saul. David did not simply take over, but made a covenant with them, probably that he would look out for their interests in both war and peace. This was David’s third anointing as king, 1 Samuel 16:13 by Samuel, 2 Sam. 2:4 by Judah, and now, v 3, by the rest of Israel. Despite some ten years of  persecution by Saul, he was only 30 when he began to reign, about the same age of Christ or the Levites when they began their ministry. His 40 year reign was apparently 40 years and 6 months. 1 Chr. 29:27 rounds it out as 7 in Hebron, 33 in Jerusalem for a total of 40 years. Jerusalem was a wise choice as it was near the border of Judah and Israel, and no doubt David consulted the Lord first on this. v 6-10. A part of Jerusalem was so well defended it had been in the hands of the Jebusites since the time of Joshua. They taunted David that even the lame and blind could defend the city from him. David detected the possibility of entering through the water tunnel which connected Jerusalem’s water supply with the interior reservoirs. On entering they were not merely to smite the Jebusites, but specifically the lame and blind, who may also have taken part in the taunting. The first to succeed would be promoted to chief captain in David’s army, and Joab achieved that distinction, 1 Chron. 11:6.  Now David lived in the fort and built an additional “Millo”, or mound to protect from the lower part of the city. David now becomes more powerful under God.V 6-12 David's most important military exploit, the taking of Jerusalem, is here presented before his battles with the Philistines,2 Sam 5:17-25, which were earlier in time. The sense of 2 Sam 5:6, 8 is in doubt. v 11,12. It was apparent to Israel, as well as surrounding countries, that God was exalting David’s kingdom, so that Hiram, also 1 Chr. 13:1, king of distant Tyre provided materials and workmen for David to build a house. Both wanted a good relationship. v 13-16. It is disappointing that David followed the custom of building a harem to indicate his elevation of power. The practice later brought him sorrow. To this list of sons,1 Chr. 14:3-7 adds Elpalet and Nogah.V 17 Refuge: 1st Sam 22:1-5 probably near Adullam .v 17-21. The Philistines ignored David when he was in Hebron, but now they realize he is a force to be reckoned with, and assemble to attack only 3 or 4 miles from Jerusalem. Valley of Rephaim means “Valley of the giants”. After calling on the Lord, David engaged them in battle and gave them a resounding defeat. They fled, leaving their images, just as the Israelites had been forced to flee, leaving the ark, 1 Sam. 4:17. David had his men burn the images.V 18- 25 The successive defeats of the Philistines in the valley of Rephaim southwest of Jerusalem had the effect of blocking their access to the mountain ridge near Gibeon, and confining them to their holdings on the coast and in the foothills beyond Gezer to the west and south.BAAL-PERAZIM: means approximately "the lord of scatterings."v 22-25. Again the Philistines assembled to attack, and David called on the Lord for instruction. This time the Lord did not direct a frontal attack, but to slip around behind them. Then when David heard the rustling sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry (possibly balsam or poplar) trees, he was to attack. The Philistines may have heard the same sound of marching, not just leaves fluttering, and retreated right into David’s trap. Not only was the surprise attack successful, David smote them from Geba to Gezer, about 15 miles. The Lord was also smiting them in some way, v 24. It is added in 1 Chr. 14:17 how the fame and fear of David came to all lands. SOUND OF MARCHING: the wind in the treetops suggestive of the Lord's footsteps.
