2nd Samuel 06

KING JAMES BIBLE

1 AGAIN, David gathered together all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand.
2 And David arose, and went with all the people that were with him from Baale of Judah, to bring up from thence the ark of God, whose name is called by the name of the Lord of hosts that dwelleth between the cherubims.
3 And they set the ark of God upon a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab that was in Gibeah: and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, drave the new cart.
4 And they brought it out of the house of Abinadab which was at Gibeah, accompanying the ark of God: and Ahio went before the ark.
5 And David and all the house of Israel played before the Lord on all manner of instruments made of fir wood, even on harps, and on psalteries, and on timbrels, and on cornets, and on cymbals.
6 And when they came to Nachon’s threshingfloor, Uzzah put forth his hand to the ark of God, and took hold of it; for the oxen shook it.
7 And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God.
8 And David was displeased, because the Lord had made a breach upon Uzzah: and he called the name of the place Perez-uzzah to this day.
9 And David was afraid of the Lord that day, and said, How shall the ark of the Lord come to me?
10 So David would not remove the ark of the Lord unto him into the city of David: but David carried it aside into the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.
11 And the ark of the Lord continued in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite three months: and the Lord blessed Obed-edom, and all his household.
12 And it was told king David, saying, The Lord hath blessed the house of Obed-edom, and all that pertaineth unto him, because of the ark of God. So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom into the city of David with gladness.
13 And it was so, that when they that bare the ark of the Lord had gone six paces, he sacrificed oxen and fatlings.
14 And David danced before the Lord with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod.
15 So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet.
16 And as the ark of the Lord came into the city of David, Michal Saul’s daughter looked through a window, and saw king David leaping and dancing before the Lord; and she despised him in her heart.
17 And they brought in the ark of the Lord, and set it in his place, in the midst of the tabernacle that David had pitched for it: and David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord.
18 And as soon as David had made an end of offering burnt offerings and peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord of hosts.
19 And he dealt among all the people, even among the whole multitude of Israel, as well to the women as men, to every one a cake of bread, and a good piece of flesh, and a flagon of wine. So all the people departed every one to his house.
20 Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, How glorious was the king of Israel to day, who uncovered himself to day in the eyes of the handmaids of his servants, as one of the vain fellows shamelessly uncovereth himself!
21 And David said unto Michal, It was before the Lord, which chose me before thy father, and before all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the Lord, over Israel: therefore will I play before the Lord.
22 And I will yet be more vile than thus, and will be base in mine own sight: and of the maidservants which thou hast spoken of, of them shall I be had in honour.
23 Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no child unto the day of her death.

2And Dauid arose and went with all the people that were with him, from Baale of Iudah, to bring vp from thence the Arke of God, whose Name is called by the Name of the Lord of hostes, that dwelleth betweene the Cherubims.

21And Dauid said vnto Michal, It was before the Lord, which chose me before thy father, & before all his house, to appoint me ruler ouer the people of the Lord, ouer Israel: therefore will I play before the Lord.

22And I will yet be more vile then thus, and will be base in mine owne sight: and of the maid seruants which thou hast spoken of, of them shall I be had in honour.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 David again assembled all the picked men of Israel, thirty thousand in number.

2 Then David and all the people who were with him set out for Baala of Judah to bring up from there the ark of God, which bears the name of the LORD of hosts enthroned above the cherubim.

3 The ark of God was placed on a new cart and taken away from the house of Abinadab on the hill. Uzzah and Ahio, sons of Abinadab, guided the cart,

4 with Ahio walking before it,

5 while David and all the Israelites made merry before the LORD with all their strength, with singing and with citharas, harps, tambourines, sistrums and cymbals.

6 When they came to the threshing floor of Nodan, Uzzah reached out his hand to the ark of God and steadied it, for the oxen were making it tip.

7 But the LORD was angry with Uzzah; God struck him on that spot, and he died there before God.

8 David was disturbed because the LORD had vented his anger on Uzzah. (The place has been called Perez-uzzah down to the present day.)

9 David feared the LORD that day and said, "How can the ark of the LORD come to me?"

10 So David would not have the ark of the LORD brought to him in the City of David, but diverted it to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.

11 The ark of the LORD remained in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite for three months, and the LORD blessed Obed-edom and his whole house.

12 When it was reported to King David that the LORD had blessed the family of Obed-edom and all that belonged to him, David went to bring up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom into the City of David amid festivities.

13 As soon as the bearers of the ark of the LORD had advanced six steps, he sacrificed an ox and a fatling.

14 Then David, girt with a linen apron, came dancing before the LORD with abandon,

15 as he and all the Israelites were bringing up the ark of the LORD with shouts of joy and to the sound of the horn.

16 As the ark of the LORD was entering the City of David, Saul's daughter Michal looked down through the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the LORD, and she despised him in her heart.

17 The ark of the LORD was brought in and set in its place within the tent David had pitched for it. Then David offered holocausts and peace offerings before the LORD.

18 When he finished making these offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD of hosts.

19 He then distributed among all the people, to each man and each woman in the entire multitude of Israel, a loaf of bread, a cut of roast meat, and a raisin cake. With this, all the people left for their homes.

20 When David returned to bless his own family, Saul's daughter Michal came out to meet him and said, "How the king of Israel has honored himself today, exposing himself to the view of the slave girls of his followers, as a commoner might do!"

21 But David replied to Michal: "I was dancing before the LORD. As the LORD lives, who preferred me to your father and his whole family when he appointed me commander of the LORD'S people, Israel, not only will I make merry before the LORD,

22 but I will demean myself even more. I will be lowly in your esteem, but in the esteem of the slave girls you spoke of I will be honored."

23 And so Saul's daughter Michal was childless to the day of her death.

COMMENTARIE

v 1,2. With 1 Chr. 13:1-6. David consulted all his military leaders, then after getting permission from the congregation of Israel, called in 30,000 chosen men of Israel as well as priests and Levites from the entire country to bring the ark back. It had been away from the tabernacle for about 70 years, 20 under Samuel, 40 under Saul and 10 under David. Since David was making Jerusalem the capitol, he wanted it to also be the center of religious worship, but the tabernacle was not moved there till later. Baale-judah means Kiriath-jearim.

v 3-5. With 1 Chr. 13, 6-8. So sure he was doing a good thing, David apparently did not consult the Lord, and the priests failed to remember or tell him that carrying the ark on a new cart was the Philistine way, not God’s way. Things started off in a great spiritual exuberance and music on all kinds of instruments.

v 6,7 with 1 Chr. 13:9,10. Going over an outcropping of rock at this threshing floor caused the oxen to stumble, and instinctively Uzzah grabbed the ark to keep it from tipping. It at first seems strange that the Lord would strike him dead for his well intentioned act, but God was vindicating His holiness, that His way must be followed.

v 8-11 with 1 Chr. 13:11-14. In fear and a touch of anger and hopelessness, David had the ark left at the home of Obed-edom, whom the Lord obviously blessed the next three months. With 1 Chr. 15:1-28. Perhaps even before David knew how the Lord was blessing Obed-edom, he may have searched his own heart and the scripture and saw that he had disobeyed God by not having it properly carried by Levites. He was in the process of building his own houses, so he had a tent built in which to place the ark. Again he assembled all Israel to bring up the ark. This time he instructed the priests and  Levites to sanctify themselves and carry the ark on staves as Moses commanded. In addition to the many musical instruments, he appointed singers and a skillful song leader, 15:22. Obed-edom sounded with harps, 1 Chr. 15:24; 16:5, 38 not porter of 38.  They only proceeded with the ark six paces before stopping to worship God by offering oxen and fatlings. These are probably the seven bullocks and seven rams of 15:26, perhaps a sin offering, Ezek. 45:23, not offerings of 6:18. This is also what was offered by Balaam and Job. How long this delayed them, we do not know, but David removed his purple robe and had on both a linen robe, 15:27, as well as an ephod of fine linen. The ephod was probably a shoulder cape of white linen worn over the top of his linen robe. He was not wearing it as priest, but like Samuel, 1 Sam. 2:18, as anointed of the Lord. This did not keep him from dancing (whirling, leaping for joy and skipping about) before the Lord with all his might and emotion. The burnt offering was totally burnt, so the meal David provided everyone, v 18, was probably from the peace offerings. For verses 17-19 see also 1 Chr. 16:1-3.
(Following comments from 1 Chr. 16:38-43 are pertinent to this discussion.
These are the two Obed-edom men mentioned in 1 Chr. 16:22.  Obed-edom the porter was a son of Jeduthan, not Jeduthan the musician. The curtains of the old Tabernacle were probably so worn David did not want to move it to Jerusalem, so he left Zadok to perform the sacrifices at Gibeon and also appointed singers and musicians to be there. Abiathar had the breast plate of judgment, so he remained with the ark at Jerusalem, so there were two high priests. All the people were happy as they went to their homes, and David went home full of joy, only to meet the criticism of Michal, 2 Sam. 6:20-23.) Michal had originally loved David and even let him down from a window to escape from Saul. Having been taken by force from her second husband may have been a factor, but her attitude changed. She looked upon David’s holy zeal as exhibitionism unbecoming a king, and despised him. It was made worse by her coming to meet him instead of discussing it with him in private. Instead of the hearty welcome David expected, she lit into him with rebuke to be seen that way before the handmaids, mingling with the common people.  In effect she was telling him he was too religious and beneath the dignity of a king. He exclaimed in rebuke that God had chosen him and he would humble himself even more. The handmaids did honor him, but she remained childless. Possibly he never laid with her again, but more likely, the Lord withheld children from her as punishment for rebuking David.
