2nd Samuel 09

KING JAMES BIBLE

1 AND David said, Is there yet any that is left of the house of Saul, that I may shew him kindness for Jonathan’s sake?
2 And there was of the house of Saul a servant whose name was Ziba. And when they had called him unto David, the king said unto him, Art thou Ziba? And he said, Thy servant is he.
3 And the king said, Is there not yet any of the house of Saul, that I may shew the kindness of God unto him? And Ziba said unto the king, Jonathan hath yet a son, which is lame on his feet.
4 And the king said unto him, Where is he? And Ziba said unto the king, Behold, he is in the house of Machir, the son of Ammiel, in Lo-debar.
5 Then king David sent, and fetched him out of the house of Machir, the son of Ammiel, from Lo-debar.
6 Now when Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, was come unto David, he fell on his face, and did reverence. And David said, Mephibosheth. And he answered, Behold thy servant!
7 And David said unto him, Fear not: for I will surely shew thee kindness for Jonathan thy father’s sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually.
8 And he bowed himself, and said, What is thy servant, that thou shouldest look upon such a dead dog as I am?
9 Then the king called to Ziba, Saul’s servant, and said unto him, I have given unto thy master’s son all that pertained to Saul and to all his house.
10 Thou therefore, and thy sons, and thy servants, shall till the land for him, and thou shalt bring in the fruits, that thy master’s son may have food to eat: but Mephibosheth thy master’s son shall eat bread alway at my table. Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.
11 Then said Ziba unto the king, According to all that my lord the king hath commanded his servant, so shall thy servant do. As for Mephibosheth, said the king, he shall eat at my table, as one of the king’s sons.
12 And Mephibosheth had a young son, whose name was Micha. And all that dwelt in the house of Ziba were servants unto Mephibosheth.
13 So Mephibosheth dwelt in Jerusalem: for he did eat continually at the king’s table; and was lame on both his feet.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 David asked, "Is there any survivor of Saul's house to whom I may show kindness for the sake of Jonathan?"

2 Now there was a servant of the family of Saul named Ziba. He was summoned to David, and the king asked him, "Are you Ziba?" He replied, "Your servant."

3 Then the king inquired, "Is there any survivor of Saul's house to whom I may show God's kindness?" Ziba answered the king, "There is still Jonathan's son, whose feet are crippled."

4 The king said to him, "Where is he?" and Ziba answered, "He is in the house of Machir, son of Ammiel, in Lodebar."

5 So King David sent for him and had him brought from the house of Machir, son of Ammiel, in Lodebar.

6 When Meribbaal, son of Jonathan, son of Saul, came to David, he fell prostrate in homage. David said, "Meribbaal," and he answered, "Your servant."

7 "Fear not," David said to him, "I will surely be kind to you for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the lands of your grandfather Saul, and you shall always eat at my table."

8 Bowing low, he answered, "What is your servant that you should pay attention to a dead dog like me?"

9 The king then called Ziba, Saul's attendant, and said to him: "I am giving your lord's son all that belonged to Saul and to all his family.

10 You and your sons and servants must till the land for him. You shall bring in the produce, which shall be food for your lord's family to eat. But Meribbaal, your lord's son, shall always eat at my table." Ziba, who had fifteen sons and twenty servants,

11 said to the king, "Your servant shall do just as my lord the king has commanded him." And so Meribbaal ate at David's table like one of the king's sons.

12 Meribbaal had a young son whose name was Mica; and all the tenants of Ziba's family worked for Meribbaal.

13 But Meribbaal lived in Jerusalem, because he always ate at the king's table. He was lame in both feet.

COMMENTARIE

v 1-4. Because David loved Jonathan, he wanted to show all the kindness he could to the household of Saul. He learned from Ziba, a servant of Saul, that Jonathan had one son lame in his feet. He had been dropped by his nurse when she was fleeing from the Philistines at the time of Jonathan’s death, 2 Sam. 4:4.
9:1 with Titus 3:4, Kindness of a Savior

v 5-8. In the time when descendants of a previous king were usually killed, Mephibosheth was probably fearful on being summoned. He fell on his face to do obeisance, but David assured him of safety for Jonathan’s sake. David restored all of Saul’s personal estate to Mephibosheth, but would care for him at his own table as a son,

v 11. Mephibosheth referred to himself as a servant and worthless. Some compare this to salvation by grace to we who don’t deserve it. Compare: V 5 with Lu. 19:10, He sought for him V 7 with Isa. 55:2, Given (spiritual) nourishment V 8 with Lu. 18:13, Mercy to the unworthy V 10 with Eph. 2:8, Grace (unmerited favor) V 11 with Rev. 1:6, Made as king’s son V 13 with Rev. 21:10-27, A permanent house. Ziba was again called in, and the care of Mephibosheth’s estate was given to Ziba and his fifteen sons and twenty servants, but Mephibosheth would eat at the royal table.
This chapter isn’t repeated in Chronicles, but takes place between 1 Chr. 18, 19.
