2nd Samuel 07

KING JAMES BIBLE

1 AND it came to pass, when the king sat in his house, and the Lord had given him rest round about from all his enemies;
2 That the king said unto Nathan the prophet, See now, I dwell in an house of cedar, but the ark of God dwelleth within curtains.
3 And Nathan said to the king, Go, do all that is in thine heart; for the Lord is with thee.
4 And it came to pass that night, that the word of the Lord came unto Nathan, saying,
5 Go and tell my servant David, Thus saith the Lord, Shalt thou build me an house for me to dwell in?
6 Whereas I have not dwelt in any house since the time that I brought up the children of Israel out of Egypt, even to this day, but have walked in a tent and in a tabernacle.
7 In all the places wherein I have walked with all the children of Israel spake I a word with any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to feed my people Israel, saying, Why build ye not me an house of cedar?
8 Now therefore so shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, to be ruler over my people, over Israel:
9 And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have made thee a great name, like unto the name of the great men that are in the earth.
10 Moreover I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and move no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as beforetime,
11 And as since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel, and have caused thee to rest from all thine enemies. Also the Lord telleth thee that he will make thee an house.
12 And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.
13 He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever.
14 I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men:
15 But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee.
16 And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.
17 According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David.
18 Then went king David in, and sat before the Lord, and he said, Who am I, O Lord God? and what is my house, that thou hast brought me hitherto?
19 And this was yet a small thing in thy sight, O Lord God; but thou hast spoken also of thy servant’s house for a great while to come. And is this the manner of man, O Lord God?
20 And what can David say more unto thee? for thou, Lord God, knowest thy servant.
21 For thy word’s sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou done all these great things, to make thy servant know them.
22 Wherefore thou art great, O Lord God: for there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.
23 And what one nation in the earth is like thy people, even like Israel, whom God went to redeem for a people to himself, and to make him a name, and to do for you great things and terrible, for thy land, before thy people, which thou redeemedst to thee from Egypt, from the nations and their gods?
24 For thou hast confirmed to thyself thy people Israel to be a people unto thee for ever: and thou, Lord, art become their God.
25 And now, O Lord God, the word that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant, and concerning his house, establish it for ever, and do as thou hast said.
26 And let thy name be magnified for ever, saying, The Lord of hosts is the God over Israel: and let the house of thy servant David be established before thee.
27 For thou, O Lord of hosts, God of Israel, hast revealed to thy servant, saying, I will build thee an house: therefore hath thy servant found in his heart to pray this prayer unto thee.
28 And now, O Lord God, thou art that God, and thy words be true, and thou hast promised this goodness unto thy servant:
29 Therefore now let it please thee to bless the house of thy servant, that it may continue for ever before thee: for thou, O Lord God, hast spoken it: and with thy blessing let the house of thy servant be blessed for ever.

13Hee shall build an house for my Name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdome for euer.

14I will be his father, and he shall be my sonne: if hee commit iniquitie, I will chasten him with the rodde of men, and with the stripes of the children of men.

15But my mercie shall not depart away from him, as I tooke it from Saul, whom I put away before thee.

16And thine house, and thy kingdome shall be stablished for euer before thee: thy throne shall be stablished for euer.

17According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speake vnto Dauid.

18 Then went king Dauid in, and sate before the Lord, and hee said, Who am I, O Lord God? and what is my house, that thou hast brought me hitherto?

19And this was yet a small thing in thy sight, O Lord God: but thou hast spoken also of thy seruants house for a great while to come, and is this the maner of man, O Lord God?

20And what can Dauid say more vnto thee? for thou, Lord God, knowest thy seruant.

24For thou hast confirmed to thy selfe thy people Israel to be a people vnto thee for euer: and thou, Lord art become their God.

25And now, O Lord God, the word that thou hast spoken, concerning thy seruant, and concerning his house, establish it for euer, and doe as thou hast said.

26And let thy name bee magnified for euer, saying, The Lord of hosts is the God ouer Israel: and let the house of thy seruant Dauid bee established before thee.

27For thou, O Lord of hostes, God of Israel, hast reuealed to thy seruant, saying, I will build thee an house: therfore hath thy seruant found in his heart to pray this prayer vnto thee.

28And now, O Lord GOD, (thou art that God, and thy words be true, and thou hast promised this goodnesse vnto thy seruant.)

29Therefore now let it please thee to blesse the house of thy seruant, that it may continue for euer before thee: for thou, O Lord God, hast spoken it, and with thy blessing let the house of thy seruant be blessed for euer.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 When King David was settled in his palace, and the LORD had given him rest from his enemies on every side,

2 he said to Nathan the prophet, "Here I am living in a house of cedar, while the ark of God dwells in a tent!"

3 Nathan answered the king, "Go, do whatever you have in mind, for the LORD is with you."

4 But that night the LORD spoke to Nathan and said:

5 "Go, tell my servant David, 'Thus says the LORD: Should you build me a house to dwell in?

6 I have not dwelt in a house from the day on which I led the Israelites out of Egypt to the present, but I have been going about in a tent under cloth.

7 In all my wanderings everywhere among the Israelites, did I ever utter a word to any one of the judges whom I charged to tend my people Israel, to ask: Why have you not built me a house of cedar?'

8 "Now then, speak thus to my servant David, 'The LORD of hosts has this to say: It was I who took you from the pasture and from the care of the flock to be commander of my people Israel.

9 I have been with you wherever you went, and I have destroyed all your enemies before you. And I will make you famous like the great ones of the earth.

10 I will fix a place for my people Israel; I will plant them so that they may dwell in their place without further disturbance. Neither shall the wicked continue to afflict them as they did of old,

11 since the time I first appointed judges over my people Israel. I will give you rest from all your enemies. The LORD also reveals to you that he will establish a house for you.

12 And when your time comes and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your heir after you, sprung from your loins, and I will make his kingdom firm.

13 It is he who shall build a house for my name. And I will make his royal throne firm forever.

14 I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me. And if he does wrong, I will correct him with the rod of men and with human chastisements;

15 but I will not withdraw my favor from him as I withdrew it from your predecessor Saul, whom I removed from my presence.

16 Your house and your kingdom shall endure forever before me; your throne shall stand firm forever.'"

17 Nathan reported all these words and this entire vision to David.

18 Then King David went in and sat before the LORD and said, "Who am I, Lord GOD, and who are the members of my house, that you have brought me to this point?

19 Yet even this you see as too little, Lord GOD; you have also spoken of the house of your servant for a long time to come: this too you have shown to man, Lord GOD!

20 What more can David say to you? You know your servant, Lord GOD!

21 For your servant's sake and as you have had at heart, you have brought about this entire magnificent disclosure to your servant.

22 And so -  "Great are you, Lord GOD! There is none like you and there is no God but you, just as we have heard it told.

23 What other nation on earth is there like your people Israel, which God has led, redeeming it as his people; so that you have made yourself renowned by doing this magnificent deed, and by doing awe-inspiring things as you cleared nations and their gods out of the way of your people, which you redeemed for yourself from Egypt?

24 You have established for yourself your people Israel as yours forever, and you, LORD, have become their God.

25 And now, LORD God, confirm for all time the prophecy you have made concerning your servant and his house, and do as you have promised.

26 Your name will be forever great, when men say, 'The LORD of hosts is God of Israel,' and the house of your servant David stands firm before you.

27 It is you, LORD of hosts, God of Israel, who said in a revelation to your servant, 'I will build a house for you.' Therefore your servant now finds the courage to make this prayer to you.

28 And now, Lord GOD, you are God and your words are truth; you have made this generous promise to your servant.

29 Do, then, bless the house of your servant that it may be before you forever; for you, Lord GOD, have promised, and by your blessing the house of your servant shall be blessed forever."

COMMENTARIE

v 1-3. There would be more war with Philistines and others, but after the two great victories over the Philistines in chapter 5, the land is given a reprieve, and David has time to consider his own nice place while the tabernacle of the Lord was an aging tent. Nathan gave his approval as a great thing to do before contacting the Lord.

V 4-17 KNOWN AS THE DAVIDIC COVENANT.

v 4-7. God spoke to Nathan with a message for David.  God had (1) been content to dwell with Israel in a tabernacle. He had (2) never complained that He wanted a fine permanent house, so why should David build one? And, 22:8; 23:1, David shed blood.

v 8.9. David is to be reminded that the Lord has taken him from being a shepherd boy to a mighty, renowned and victorious ruler. The prophecy to David contained in these verses is cited again, in poetic form, in Psalm 89:20-38, and alluded to in Psalm 132. The promise regarding the people of Israel, 2 Sam 7:10-11, is a part of the promise to David at least as old as the composition of this chapter of Samuel, where it is anticipated in 2 Sam 7:6-7, and alluded to in David's thanksgiving, 2 Sam 7:23-24; it applies to the people an expression used of David inPsalm 89:23.The prophecy to David is the basis for Jewish expectation of a Messiah, son of David, which Jesus Christ fulfilled in a transcendent way; cf Acts 2:30;Hebrews 1:5.

v 10,11. The Lord is making a permanent safe place for Israel, and He isn’t wanting David to build Him a house, He wants to build David a house. Verse 10 is what God will do for Israel, and 11-17 is what he will do for David.

v 12-17. When David dies, his son would take over the kingdom and he would be the one to build God’s house. It is added in 1 Chr. 22:8 that God had told David that because all of the bloodshed involved with his reign, God would not permit him to build the house. David is told what will happen if his son commits iniquity. He, and it  can be understood, his successors, would be chastened by men, not as a matter of penalty, but for remedy.  It would be an everlasting kingdom and would not be taken away as it was from Saul. When God speaks of building a house, He is speaking of a kingdom. He does not state that the seed will be established, but the kingdom will be established, speaking of Christ, and His everlasting kingdom.
Christ was not a descendant of Solomon, but was born of Mary, a descendant of Nathan, another of David’s sons. However, Christ’s foster father, Joseph, was of the line of Solomon, so the throne, but not the seed, came through Solomon.

v 18-22. David’s response to Nathan was probably polite but insignificant. He went into the tent where the ark was located to the presence of the Lord. The fact that he sat ( probably on heels) is an indication that the position in prayer is not important. It also can mean to tarry, or abide, so he composed himself to spend some time with the Lord. David recognizes his own unworthiness to receive such a promise from the Lord. This only magnifies the greatness of God. V 19 This too you have shown to man: the text as transmitted has, rather, "and this is instruction for (or: the law of) mankind." The author of Chronicles (1 Chron 17:17) saw approximately the same phrase, which he endeavored to fit into the context in a quite different sense. The above is conjectural; Deut 5:24.

v 23-,24. Deliverance from Egypt is an example that past performance by faith guarantees the future. It is awe inspiring that God has set aside Israel for Himself.

25. Reminder of Mt. 6:10, “THY KINGDOM COME, THY WILL BE DONE". v 26-29. Again David acknowledges God over Israel and himself. David accepts that what the Lord has promised He will perform, so in faith he is prompted to ask that since God has promised to bless the house that springs from David forever, He will indeed bless it forever.  Note difference between conditional - unconditional promises.
