Genesis 13

Abram’s Magnanimity. Abram Separates from Lot: Lot was Abraham's nephew. Since they had left Ur years before they had been together. Their herdsmen was so quarrelsome over passure lands, because their flocks, herds, and tents had beome so extinve, that it seemed that the mest idea was for them to separare. Abraham gave Lot his chice and Lot took the plain of Sodom with Abraham chosing Hebron, which was henceforth his settled home.

1. And Abram went vp out of Egypt, he and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the South.
2. And Abram was very rich in cattell, in siluer, and in gold.
3. And hee went on his iourneyes from the South, euen to Beth-el, vnto the place where his tent had bene at the beginning, betweene Beth-el and Hai:
4. Unto the place of the altar, which he had made there at the first: and there Abram called on the Name of the LORD.
5. And Lot also which went with Abram, had flocks and heards, & tents.
6. And the land was not able to beare them, that they might dwell together: for their substance was great, so that they could not dwell together.
7. And there was a strife betweene the heardmen of Abrams cattell, and the heardmen of Lots cattell: And the Canaanite, and the Perizzite dwelled then in the land.
8. And Abram said vnto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, betweene mee and thee, and betweene my heardmen and thy heardmen: for wee bee brethren.
9. Is not the whole land before thee? Separate thy selfe, I pray thee, from mee: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will goe to the right: or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will goe to the left.
10. And Lot lifted vp his eyes, and beheld all the plaine of Iordane, that it was well watered euery where before the Lord destroyed Sodome and Gomorah, euen as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou commest vnto Zoar.
11. Then Lot chose him all the plaine of Iordane: and Lot iourneyed East; and they separated themselues the one from the other.
12. Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plaine, and pitched his tent toward Sodome.
13. But the men of Sodome were wicked, and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.
14. And the LORD said vnto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift vp now thine eyes, and looke from the place where thou art, Northward, and Southward, and Eastward, and Westward.
15. For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seede for euer.
16. And I will make thy seede as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbred.
17. Arise, walke through the land, in the length of it, and in the breadth of it: for I will giue it vnto thee.
18. Then Abram remoued his tent, and came and dwelt in the plaine of Mamre, which is in Hebron, and built there an altar vnto the LORD.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 From Egypt Abram went up to the Negeb with his wife and all that belonged to him, and Lot accompanied him.

2Now Abram was very rich in livestock, silver, and gold.

3 From the Negeb he traveled by stages toward Bethel, to the place between Bethel and Ai where his tent had formerly stood,

4 the site where he had first built the altar; and there he invoked the LORD by name.

5 Lot, who went with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents,

6 so that the land could not support them if they stayed together; their possessions were so great that they could not dwell together.

7 There were quarrels between the herdsmen of Abram's livestock and those of Lot's. (At this time the Canaanites and the Perizzites were occupying the land.)

8 So Abram said to Lot: "Let there be no strife between you and me, or between your herdsmen and mine, for we are kinsmen.

9 Is not the whole land at your disposal? Please separate from me. If you prefer the left, I will go to the right; if you prefer the right, I will go to the left."

10 Lot looked about and saw how well watered the whole Jordan Plain was as far as Zoar, like the LORD'S own garden, or like Egypt. (This was before the LORD had destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) 11 Lot, therefore, chose for himself the whole Jordan Plain and set out eastward. Thus they separated from each other;

12 Abram stayed in the land of Canaan, while Lot settled among the cities of the Plain, pitching his tents near Sodom.

13 Now the inhabitants of Sodom were very wicked in the sins they committed against the LORD.

14 After Lot had left, the LORD said to Abram: "Look about you, and from where you are, gaze to the north and south, east and west;

15 all the land that you see I will give to you and your descendants forever.

16 I will make your descendants like the dust of the earth; if anyone could count the dust of the earth, your descendants too might be counted.

17 Set forth and walk about in the land, through its length and breadth, for to you I will give it."

18 Abram moved his tents and went on to settle near the terebinth of Mamre, which is at Hebron. There he built an altar to the LORD.

COMMENTARIE

v 1,2. As Abram reenters the south land of Canaan his original wealth has no doubt been inc20.reased by the dowry given for Sarai. 21.v 3,4. It is good at any time to get back in the place where we are in fellowship with the Lord. We did not hear of an altar or him calling on the Lord while in Egypt. v 5-7. The first problem arises from taking Lot along, who is also wealthy. Strife between the herdsmen indirectly caused strife between Abram and Lot. v 8,9. The choice parts of the land were undoubtedly occupied by the native people, so separation is necessary. Abram is gracious to offer Lot his choice of the land.

v 10,11. Lot showed greed in choosing the best, well watered Jordan valley. Selfishness is Lot’s first sin in the steps of backsliding which follow. Like Demas of 2 Tim 4:10, he loved this present world. He may not have known of Sodom’s sins then.

v 12,13. Abram was in the place of blessing. Lot was in a place of spiritual danger and must soon have have recognized it, but may have thought it wouldn’t affect him. We know their wickedness vexed his righteous soul from day to day, 2 Pet. 2:8, but as we will see in Gen. 19:14, he had no testimony among them and when he did speak out for what was right, he was as one that mocked.

v 14-16. With Lot out of the way, the Lord can deal directly with Abram without hindrance. The land he could see in all directions would be his, even the area Lot has chosen. At Abram’s death he only owned a burial plot. This promise has yet to be completely fulfilled, but after the Great Tribulation, it will be. That his seed shall be as the dust of the earth is Oriental hyperbole, but they are still innumerable. Believers are also counted as children of Abraham, so that adds an innumerable number more.

v 17,18. Abram had already walked the length of the land, we don’t know if he ever walked the breadth, but quite likely he may have. Under the oaks or terebinth trees was surely a cool comfortable place to pitch camp. Hebron is an association or company of people, and this location will appear many more times in Scripture. He is now back in full fellowship with the Lord and builds another altar.
