Hosea 08

KING JAMES BIBLE

1 SET the trumpet to thy mouth. He shall come as an eagle against the house of the LORD, because they have transgressed my covenant, and trespassed against my law.
2 Israel shall cry unto me, My God, we know thee.
3 Israel hath cast off the thing that is good: the enemy shall pursue him.
4 They have set up kings, but not by me: they have made princes, and I knew it not: of their silver and their gold have they made them idols, that they may be cut off.
5 Thy calf, O Samaria, hath cast thee off; mine anger is kindled against them: how long will it be ere they attain to innocency?
6 For from Israel was it also: the workman made it; therefore it is not God: but the calf of Samaria shall be broken in pieces.
7 For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: it hath no stalk: the bud shall yield no meal: if so be it yield, the strangers shall swallow it up.
8 Israel is swallowed up: now shall they be among the Gentiles as a vessel wherein is no pleasure.
9 For they are gone up to Assyria, a wild ass alone by himself: Ephraim hath hired lovers.
10 Yea, though they have hired among the nations, now will I gather them, and they shall sorrow a little for the burden of the king of princes.
11 Because Ephraim hath made many altars to sin, altars shall be unto him to sin.
12 I have written to him the great things of my law, but they were counted as a strange thing.
13 They sacrifice flesh for the sacrifices of mine offerings, and eat it; but the LORD accepteth them not; now will he remember their iniquity, and visit their sins: they shall return to Egypt.
14 For Israel hath forgotten his Maker, and buildeth temples; and Judah hath multiplied fenced cities: but I will send a fire upon his cities, and it shall devour the palaces thereof.

KING JAMES 1611

1Set the Trumpet to thy mouth: hee shall come as an Eagle against the house of the Lord, because they haue transgressed my Couenant, and trespassed against my Lawe.

2Israel shall crie vnto me, My God, we know thee.

3Israel hath cast off the thing that is good: the enemie shall pursue him.

4They haue set vp Kings, but not by me: they haue made Princes, and I knew it not: of their siluer and their golde haue they made them idoles, that they may be cut off.

5 Thy calfe, O Samaria, hath cast thee off: mine anger is kindled against them: how long will it bee ere they attaine to innocencie?

6For from Israel was it also, the workeman made it, therefore it is not God: but the calfe of Samaria shall be broken in pieces.

7For they haue sowen the winde, and they shall reape the whirlewinde: it hath no stalke: the budde shall yeeld no meale: if so be it yeeld, the strangers shall swallow it vp.

8Israel is swallowed vp, now shal they be among the Gentiles, as a vessell wherein is no pleasure.

9For they are gone vp to Assyria, a wilde Asse alone by himselfe; Ephraim hath hired louers.

10Yea, though they haue hired among the nations, now will I gather them, and they shall sorrow a little for the burden of the King of princes.

11Because Ephraim hath made many altars to sinne, altars shall be vnto him to sinne.

12I haue written to him the great things of my Law, but they were counted as a strange thing.

13They sacrifice flesh for the sacrifices of mine offerings, and eate it; but the Lord accepteth them not: now will he remember their iniquitie, and visite their sinnes: they shal returne to Egypt.

14For Israel hath forgotten his maker, and buildeth temples; and Iudah hath multiplied fenced cities: but I will send a fire vpon his cities, and it shall deuoure the palaces thereof.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

A trumpet to your lips, You who watch over the house of the LORD! Since they have violated my covenant, and sinned against my law,

2 While to me they cry out, "O, God of Israel, we know you!"

3 The men of Israel have thrown away what is good; the enemy shall pursue them.

4 They made kings, but not by my authority; they established princes, but without my approval. With their silver and gold they made idols for themselves, to their own destruction.

5 Cast away your calf, O Samaria! my wrath is kindled against them; How long will they be unable to attain innocence in Israel?

6 The work of an artisan no god at all, Destined for the flames - such is the calf of Samaria!

7 When they sow the wind, they shall reap the whirlwind; The stalk of grain that forms no ear can yield no flour; Even if it could, strangers would swallow it.

8 Israel is swallowed up; he is now among the nations a thing of no value.

9 They went up to Assyria - a wild ass off on its own - Ephraim bargained for lovers.

10 Even though they bargain with the nations, I will now gather an army; King and princes shall shortly succumb under the burden.

11 When Ephraim made many altars to expiate sin, his altars became occasions of sin.

12 Though I write for him my many ordinances, they are considered as a stranger's.

13 Though they offer sacrifice, immolate flesh and eat it, the LORD is not pleased with them. He shall still remember their guilt and punish their sins; they shall return to Egypt.

14 Israel has forgotten his maker and built palaces. Judah, too, has fortified many cities, but I will send fire upon his cities, to devour their castles.

COMMENTARIE

HAVE SOWN THE WIND: SHALL REAP THE WHIRLWIND.

v 1. As the blowing of a trumpet for battle, Assyria was about to swoop down on Ephraim as an eagle, because they broke God’s covenant and rebelled against Him.

v 2-4. Ephraim only gave lip service to God and was untrue. They set up kings other then David's family as God had instructed, without consulting God and worshiped idols, so they faced judgment by enemies.

v 5,6. Jeroboam had set up a calf at Bethel for worship. It was stupid that a calf that was made by man could be a God, but since they rejected God, He rejected them.

v 7. Israel’s idols and foreign policy were both worthless and without substance like the wind, but they would reap a whirlwind or tornado of trouble. Their crops would fail, but what they did raise would be taken by enemies.

v 8. Foreign policy had robbed Israel’s strength and they were like a broken pot.

v 9. Israel’s alliance were as fleeting as a wild donkey or prostitution.

v 10. Alliances having failed, they would be oppressed by Assyria.
v 11-13. Israel made many altars for sin offerings, but they were altars for sinning,  because they did not offer to God out of a true heart. God would not accept the hypocritical offerings, and the people would go back to slavery, symbolized by Egypt.

v 14. Judah and Ephraim are both specified in this indictment, because they had all built fortified cities and relied on their own strength instead of God. Those cities would be destroyed by fire. Sennacherib attacked and captured the fortified cities of Judah, 2 Ki. 18:13.
