1 WHEN Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.
2 As they called them, so they went from them: they sacrificed unto Baalim, and burned incense to graven images.
3 I taught Ephraim also to go, taking them by their arms; but they knew not that I healed them.
4 I drew them with cords of a man, with bands of love: and I was to them as they that take off the yoke on their jaws, and I laid meat unto them.
5 He shall not return into the land of Egypt, but the Assyrian shall be his king, because they refused to return.
6 And the sword shall abide on his cities, and shall consume his branches, and devour them, because of their own counsels.
7 And my people are bent to backsliding from me: though they called them to the most High, none at all would exalt him.
8 How shall I give thee up, Ephraim? how shall I deliver thee, Israel? how shall I make thee as Admah? how shall I set thee as Zeboim? mine heart is turned within me, my repentings are kindled together.
9 I will not execute the fierceness of mine anger, I will not return to destroy Ephraim: for I am God, and not man; the Holy One in the midst of thee: and I will not enter into the city.
10 They shall walk after the LORD: he shall roar like a lion: when he shall roar, then the children shall tremble from the west.
11 They shall tremble as a bird out of Egypt, and as a dove out of the land of Assyria: and I will place them in their houses, saith the LORD.
12 Ephraim compasseth me about with lies, and the house of Israel with deceit: but Judah yet ruleth with God, and is faithful with the saints.

1 When Israel was a child I loved him, out of Egypt I called my son.

2 The more I called them, the farther they went from me, Sacrificing to the Baals and burning incense to idols.

3 Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk, who took them in my arms;

4 I drew them with human cords, with bands of love; I fostered them like one who raises an infant to his cheeks; Yet, though I stooped to feed my child, they did not know that I was their healer.

5 He shall return to the land of Egypt, and Assyria shall be his king;

6 The sword shall begin with his cities and end by consuming his solitudes. Because they refused to repent, their own counsels shall devour them.

7 His people are in suspense about returning to him; and God, though in unison they cry out to him, shall not raise them up.

8 How could I give you up, O Ephraim, or deliver you up, O Israel? How could I treat you as Admah, or make you like Zeboiim? My heart is overwhelmed, my pity is stirred.

9 I will not give vent to my blazing anger, I will not destroy Ephraim again; For I am God and not man, the Holy One present among you; I will not let the flames consume you.

10 They shall follow the LORD, who roars like a lion; When he roars, his sons shall come frightened from the west,

11 Out of Egypt they shall come trembling, like sparrows, from the land of Assyria, like doves; And I will resettle them in their homes, says the LORD.

Chapter 11 "How Shall I Give you up"

Quotation from Matthew 2:15 referring to the flight of Jesus' parents to Egypt.

v 1-4. Again God refers to Israel’s early beginning as a loved son brought out of Egypt. Even though they went after Baal, God treated them with care and gentleness.

 

 

 

 

v 5-7. So God would replace their good food with a sword that would devour them and they would be exiled. They had rejected the prophet’s call to repentance.

 

 

v 8,9. God resents having to deal with Israel as He did with the area of Sodom and Gomorrah. He restrains His anger because He is God, not man.

 

 

v 10-11. God will summon His people and they will come trembling as previous ones did at Sinai. They followed others like a silly dove, but now return like a dove. All Ephraim had been deceitful, and Judah serves God with pretense.
