Matthew 03

KING JAMES BIBLE KING JAMES 1611 VERSES TO VERSES THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

JOHN THE BAPTIST PREACHES

1 IN those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judæa,
2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
3 For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
4 And the same John had his raiment of camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.
5 Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judæa, and all the region round about Jordan,
6 And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.
7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:
9 And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
10 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
12 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

JOHN BAPTIZES JESUS
13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.
14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?
15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.
16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

THE PREACHING OF JOHN THE BAPTIST

1 In those days John the Baptist appeared, preaching in the desert of Judea 2 (and) saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!" 3 It was of him that the prophet Isaiah had spoken when he said: "A voice of one crying out in the desert, 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.'" 4 John wore clothing made of camel's hair and had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. 5 At that time Jerusalem, all Judea, and the whole region around the Jordan were going out to him 6 and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River as they acknowledged their sins. 7 When he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance. 9 And do not presume to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you, God can raise up children to Abraham from these stones. 10 Even now the ax lies at the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. 11 I am baptizing you with water, for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is mightier than I. I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the holy Spirit and fire.12 His winnowing fan is in his hand. He will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire."

THE BAPTISM OF JESUS

13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. 14 John tried to prevent him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me?" 15 Jesus said to him in reply, "Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he allowed him. 16 After Jesus was baptized, he came up from the water and behold, the heavens were opened (for him), and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove (and) coming upon him. 17 And a voice came from the heavens, saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."

THE MESSAGE AND MINISTRY OF JOHN THE BAPTIST. Matthew 3:1-12, Mark 1:1-18, Luke 1:80 3:1-18, John 1:6-28
NAZARETH TO BETHABARA ON THE JORDAN RIVER Matthew 3:13-17
MT 3 THE PREACHING OF JOHN THE BAPTIST
THE FORERUNNER OF JESUS Verses 1 – 12
John is the forerunner or a pathfinder (Isa 40:3)
v 1, Matthew skips nearly 30 years of Jesus life and goes right to his forerunner, John the Baptist. JOHN THE BAPTIST: A relative of Jesus, Levite and the forerunner to the Messiah (LK 1:5, 1:36) Jesus and many other Jews considered John a prophet (11:9 21:26) John's clothing (3:4) was like the OT prophet Elijah, with a garment of hair cloth and a belt of leather about his loins. (2King 1:8) It was known that a figure like Elijah was to return before the Messiah (Mal 4:5) to begin restoring the Tribes of Israel (Sir 48:10) Since he was of the priesthood of Aaron, he probably began his ministry at 30 years of age, about six months before Jesus began His. John’s message was first, repent to be saved.
V 2. KINGDOM OF HEAVEN: The kingdom of heavens helped to distinguish the kingdom proclaimed by John (3:2) and Jesus (4:17) from others with the popular hopes for a literal restoration of Israel. (Acts 1:6) Kingdom from the Father in heaven ( 6:10) The presence of the kingdom is mediated by the church and with it's full manifestation upon the coming of Christ in glory. (25: 31-46) The second part was the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Not immediate, but imminent. It could have been in that day if the Jews would have accepted their Messiah, which God knew they would not.
V 3 THE VOICE OF ONE CRYING: Quotation of Is 40:3 Isaiah out lines John's mission , John is the important figure that prepares the way of the Lord.
v 3-6. Matt. 3:3; Mk. 1:2,3: 3:4-6 and Jn. 1:23 all refer to Isa. 40:3. Workers cleared the roads for the Jews to return from Babylon and they cleared the roads for those who came to Jerusalem to the feasts,
V 3:4 JOHN THE BAPTIST....: His clothes were made of camel’s hair and leather, and he eat locusts and wild honey. but here John is preparing the way for Christ. He was clad like Elijah and ate the diet of the poor, locusts and wild honey. Many repented.
V 6 THE RIVER JORDON: It's headwaters begin North of the sea of Galilee running along side of Palestine and flows southward. THE DEAD SEA: Two OT events prefigure the saving power of the sacrament of Baptism. One, Norman the Syria was cleansed from leprosy at the location when he dipped seven times into the river at the command of Elisha ( 2 King 5:14) and Jordan is associated with God's deliverance.
v 7-10. John gave special warning for the Sadducees and Pharisees to repent, because they expected to enter the kingdom simply by being sons of Abraham.
v 11,12. John only baptized the people in water, but he was not worthy to untie the sandals of Christ, who would baptize with the Holy Ghost and fire. Pentecost was just a preview of this prophecy of Joel 2:28,29.

MT 3:13-17 THE NINTH STEP FROM NAZARETH TO BETHABARA ON THE JORDAN RIVER
THE BAPTISM OF JESUS Verses 13 – 17
v 13-17. Jesus began His ministry by coming to John to be baptized. He objected, but Jesus chose this to show He was identifying Himself with sinners. This is a picture of death and resurrection, and Christ called His death a baptism, Mt. 20:22.
John recognizing Jesus as Messiah, Mt. 3:14 is not in conflict with him not knowing Him, Jn 1:31. John was filled with the Holy Ghost from the womb, Lk. 1:15, grew up in the wilderness and may not have attended Feasts. Jesus attended them, but was secluded in Galilee. so they may never have met. John just knew he was to prepare the way for Messiah. So the Holy Spirit revealed this to him just as He revealed to Samuel who was to be king.
The Holy Spirit descended on Jesus in the form of a dove. to confirm to John and the other people that Jesus was Messiah. . In Jn. 1:31, John is emphasizing the fact that the two were not acquainted with each other, so people would know there was no collusion between them in presenting Jesus as Messiah. Jesus’ ministry was authenticated from heaven by the coming of the Holy Spirit like a dove, and by the voice of the Father. The Father used those same words on the Mount of Transfiguration. The entire Trinity was present.

V 2. KINGDOM OF HEAVEN: The kingdom of heavens helped to distinguish the kingdom proclaimed by John (3:2) and Jesus (4:17) from others with the popular hopes for a literal restoration of Israel. PHARISEES AND SADDUCEES: Two Jews' sects: Pharisees the most part notorious hypocrites; the Sadducees a kind of freethinkers in matters of religion. MORE INFO www.christisalive.net/zeolot

v 7-10. John gave special warning for the Sadducees and Pharisees to repent, because they expected to enter the kingdom simply by being sons of Abraham.

v 11,12. v. 11 I BAPTIZE YOU : John didn't want to baptize Jesus because he knew who he was, also John's baptizm was with water and only a sign of purification. It didn't change the human heart, only the infusetion with the Holy Spirit could do that. GAPTIZE WITH FIRE: God's symbol or his purifying judgement (Deut 4:24 Sir 2:5 Is 4:3-5 Acts 2:3-4) SACRAMENTAL: baptism confers the regenerating of justifying faith by Grace and Forgeiveness. John believed he was not worthy to untie the sandals of Christ, who would baptize with the Holy Ghost and fire. Pentecost was just a preview of this prophecy of Joel 2:28,29.

v 13-17. Jesus began His ministry by coming to John to be baptized. He objected, but Jesus chose this to show He was identifying Himself with sinners. This is a picture of death and resurrection, and Christ called His death a baptism, Mt. 20:22. John recognizing Jesus as Messiah,

v 15 IT IS FITTING: John didn't want to Baptize Jesus because he knew who he was. Jesus was total human and total God. So his total human form wanted to be baptism as the others. Mt. 3:14 is not in conflict with him not knowing Him, Jn 1:31. John was filled with the Holy Ghost from the womb, Lk. 1:15, grew up in the wilderness and may not have attended Feasts.
