1And hee entred into a ship, and passed ouer, and came into his owne citie. 2And behold, they brought to him a man sicke of the palsie, lying on a bed: and Iesus seeing their faith, said vnto the sicke of the palsie, Sonne, be of good cheere, thy sinnes be forgiuen thee. 3And behold, certaine of the Scribes said within themselues, This man blasphemeth. 4And Iesus knowing their thoughts, said, Wherefore thinke yee euill in your hearts? 5For whether is easier to say, Thy sinnes be forgiuen thee: or to say, Arise, and walke? 6But that yee may know that the sonne of man hath power on earth to forgiue sinnes, (Then saith hee to the sicke of the palsie) Arise, take vp thy bed, and goe vnto thine house. 7And he arose, and departed to his house. 8But when the multitudes saw it, they marueiled, & glorified God, which had giuen such power vnto men. 9 And as Iesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man named Matthew, sitting at the receite of custome: and he saith vnto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him. 10 And it came to passe, as Iesus sate at meate in the house, behold, many publicanes and sinners, came and sate downe with him and his Disciples. 11And when the Pharisees saw it, they said vnto his disciples, Why eateth your master with publicanes & sinners. 12But when Iesus heard that, hee said vnto them, They that be whole neede not a Physicion, but they that are sicke. 13But goe ye and learne what that meaneth, I will haue mercy and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. 14 Then came to him the disciples of Iohn, saying, Why doe we and the Pharisees fast oft, but thy disciples fast not? 15And Iesus saide vnto them, Can the children of the bride-chamber mourne, as long as the bridegrome is with them? But the dayes will come when the bridegrome shall bee taken from them, and then shall they fast. 16No man putteth a piece of new cloth vnto an olde garment: for that which is put in to fill it vp, taketh from the garment, & the rent is made worse. 17Neither doe men put new wine into old bottels: else the bottels breake, and the wine runneth out, and the bottels perish: but they put new wine into new bottels, and both are preserued. 18 While hee spake these things vnto them, beholde, there came a certaine ruler and worshipped him, saying, My daughter is euen now dead: but come, and lay thy hand vpon her, and she shall liue. 19And Iesus arose, and followed him, and so did his disciples. 20( And behold, a woman which was diseased with an issue of blood twelue yeeres, came behinde him, and touched the hemme of his garment. 21For she said within her selfe, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole. 22But Iesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, bee of good comfort, thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that houre.) 23And when Iesus came into the rulers house, and saw the minstrels and the people making a noise, 24He said vnto them, Giue place, for the mayd is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorne. 25But when the people were put foorth, he went in, and tooke her by the hand: and the mayd arose. 26And the fame hereof went abroad into all that land. 27 And when Iesus departed thence, two blinde men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou sonne of Dauid, haue mercy on vs. 28And when he was come into the house, the blinde men came to him: and Iesus saith vnto them, Beleeue ye that I am able to doe this? They said vnto him, Yea, Lord. 29Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith, bee it vnto you. 30And their eyes were opened: and Iesus straitly charged them, saying, See that no man know it. 31But they, when they were departed, spread abroad his fame in all that countrey. 32As they went out, beholde, they brought to him a dumbe man possessed with a deuill. 33And when the deuil was cast out, the dumbe spake, and the multitudes marueiled, saying, It was neuer so seene in Israel. 34But the Pharisees said, He casteth out the deuils through the prince of the deuils. 35And Iesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their Synagogues, and preaching the Gospel of the kingdome, and healing euery sickenesse, and euery disease among the people. 36 But when he saw the multitudes, he was moued with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheepe hauing no shepheard. 37Then saith he vnto his disciples, The haruest truely is plenteous, but the labourers are few. 38Pray ye therefore the Lord of the haruest, that hee will send foorth labourers into his haruest. |

1 He entered a boat, made the crossing, and came into his own town. 2 And there people brought to him a paralytic lying on a stretcher. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Courage, child, your sins are forgiven." 3 At that, some of the scribes said to themselves, "This man is blaspheming." 4 Jesus knew what they were thinking, and said, "Why do you harbor evil thoughts? 5 Which is easier, to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Rise and walk'? 6 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins" - he then said to the paralytic, "Rise, pick up your stretcher, and go home." 7 He rose and went home. 8 When the crowds saw this they were struck with awe and glorified God who had given such authority to human beings. 9 As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the customs post. He said to him, "Follow me." And he got up and followed him. 10 While he was at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat with Jesus and his disciples. 11 The Pharisees saw this and said to his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?" 12 He heard this and said, "Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do. 13 Go and learn the meaning of the words, 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' I did not come to call the righteous but sinners." 14 Then the disciples of John approached him and said, "Why do we and the Pharisees fast (much), but your disciples do not fast?" 15 Jesus answered them, "Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast. 16 No one patches an old cloak with a piece of unshrunken cloth, for its fullness pulls away from the cloak and the tear gets worse. 17 People do not put new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise the skins burst, the wine spills out, and the skins are ruined. Rather, they pour new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved." 18 While he was saying these things to them, an official came forward, knelt down before him, and said, "My daughter has just died. But come, lay your hand on her, and she will live." 19 Jesus rose and followed him, and so did his disciples. 20 A woman suffering hemorrhages for twelve years came up behind him and touched the tassel on his cloak. 21 She said to herself, "If only I can touch his cloak, I shall be cured." 22 Jesus turned around and saw her, and said, "Courage, daughter! Your faith has saved you." And from that hour the woman was cured. 23 When Jesus arrived at the official's house and saw the flute players and the crowd who were making a commotion, 24 he said, "Go away! The girl is not dead but sleeping." And they ridiculed him. 25 When the crowd was put out, he came and took her by the hand, and the little girl arose. 26 And news of this spread throughout all that land. 27 And as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed (him), crying out, "Son of David, have pity on us!" 28 When he entered the house, the blind men approached him and Jesus said to them, "Do you believe that I can do this?" "Yes, Lord," they said to him. 29 Then he touched their eyes and said, "Let it be done for you according to your faith." 30 And their eyes were opened. Jesus warned them sternly, "See that no one knows about this." 31 But they went out and spread word of him through all that land. 32 As they were going out, a demoniac who could not speak was brought to him, 33 and when the demon was driven out the mute person spoke. The crowds were amazed and said, "Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel." 34 But the Pharisees said, "He drives out demons by the prince of demons." 35 Jesus went around to all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and curing every disease and illness. 36 At the sight of the crowds, his heart was moved with pity for them because they were troubled and abandoned, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; 38 so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest."

COMMENTARY |

v 1-8. Sometime after healing the man of leprosy the crowds became so large they could not get a man with palsy to Jesus, so they lowered him through the tiling of a roof to be healed of paralysis. For the benefit of the religious leaders present, Jesus first forgave his sins. Then as proof of His power to forgive sins, He healed him and ordered him to pick up his couch and go home. He picked up his couch and departed, and the crowd was amazed. JESUS CALLS MATTHEW (LEVI) DECIPLE 9:9 MK 2:13, 14 Lk 5:27-28 MATT 9:9 THE CALL OF MATTHEW v 9-13. Jesus called Matthew (Levi) from his unpopular tax collector seat to follow him. He not only followed, but soon invited Jesus to a feast. He likely had cheated by collecting more taxes than was due, so he and his friends were hated as sinners. Jesus rebuked the self righteous who criticized His eating with them by saying that it was the sick who needed a physician, and He came to call sinners to repentance. Pharisees were self righteous and sick but didn't’t know it. Matthew a Tax Collector who worked under the authority of Herod Antipas around Capernaum. In Jesus' Day taxes on transported goods were contracted out to local collectors, Roman officials collected the Land and poll taxes themselves. Tax Collectors were not like because most oF the time they increased the taxes and keep the difference between what the taxes were and what they charge the people and keeped the difference. MATT 9:14 THE QUESTION ABOUT FASTING v 14-17. When He was questioned for not fasting like the disciples of John or the Pharisees, He gave three examples. (1.) A bridegroom’s guests don’t fast while he is with them. (2). A new patch of cloth, not yet shrunk, would make an old garment tear. (3.) New wine is not put in old wine skins or it will break during fermentation. His way and the Pharisee’s way did not mix. He compared their ways to old wine which they thought was better than Jesus’ new way. CAN THE CHILDREN OF THE BRIDEGROOM: By a Hebraism, signifies the companions or friends of the bridegroom. MATT 9:18 A GIRL RESTORED TO LIFE AND A WOMAN HEALED V 18,19. Luke adds that the man’s name was Jairus. His only daughter was 12 years old, and he could scarcely get to Jesus for help because of the crowd. Other Gospels say she was dying, Matthew omits the part about others reporting that to him. v 20-22. On the way, Jesus was interrupted when a woman with female bleeding 12 years sneaked up to touch His garment (probably just the tassel) and was healed. She probably lived in isolation and was forbidden to touch Jesus or anyone else in the crowd she jostled against, would be ceremonially unclean, Lev. 15:25-30. Jesus knew healing power had gone out, and of course He knew who it was, but asked for confession. (The disciples belittled His request due to the large crowd.) She was no doubt in great fear, because she could be stoned for making the others unclean. Realizing she was caught, she told her story publicly. Jesus told her that her faith had saved her, so to go in peace. (She would still be unclean seven days and would need to bring two turtle doves or two young pigeons for ceremonial cleansing. according to Jewish history) v 23-26. By now word arrived that the girl was dead, but Jesus told Jairus in the other Gospels to believe and she would be well. Jairus was probably encouraged by the other incident. Musicians were already playing for the mourners, so He was laughed at and scorned, but taking only Peter, James and John, He went into the house and healed her and ordered food to be brought to her, proving her health was restored. He had become so popular He asked them not to tell this to others. He didn't’t want to be proclaimed as Messiah until the proper time at Jerusalem. MATT 9:27 JESUS HEALS TWO BLIND MEN v 27-31. Not recorded in other Gospels, these two blind men recognized Him as Messiah and persistently followed into the house and were healed. In spite of Jesus’ order not to tell others, they couldn't’t keep it quiet. MATT 9:32 JESUS HEALS A MAN WHO WAS MUTE v 32-34. Healing this mute (probably deaf, Lk 1:52) demon possessed man is similar but not recorded in other Gospels. The Pharisees reaction, saying Jesus healed by the prince of demons, is similar to their charges, Matt. 10:25 and 12:22-37. MATT 9:35 THE HARVEST PLENTIFUL THE LABORERS ARE FEW. v 35-38. Verse 35 is similar to 4:23, and brings out the threefold ministry of Christ. His ministry was among the Jews, His preaching showed Him the Prophet of Deut. 18:15-19 and His healing authenticated Him as Messiah. Jesus had strong emotions for both the bodily needs and being led astray by Pharisees. Disciples were to pray and go to reap the harvest of people for the Lord. |
