JESUS IS LORD OVER THE SABBATH DAY 1At that time, Iesus went on the Sabbath day thorow the corne, & his Disciples were an hungred, and beganne to pluck the eares of corne, and to eate. 2But when the Pharises saw it, they said vnto him, Behold, thy Disciples doe that which is not lawfull to doe vpon the Sabbath day. 3But he said vnto them, Haue yee not read what Dauid did when hee was an hungred, and they that were with him, 4How he entred into the house of God, and did eate the shew bread, which was not lawfull for him to eate, neither for them which were with him, but, only for the Priests? 5Or haue yee not read in the law, how that on the Sabbath dayes the Priests in the Temple profane the Sabbath, and are blamelesse? 6But I saye vnto you, that in this place is one greater then the Temple. 7But if yee had knowen what this meaneth, I will haue mercy, and not sacrifice, yee would not haue condemned the guiltlesse. 8For the sonne of man is Lord euen of the Sabbath day. JESUS HEALS A MAN WITH A WITHERED HAND 9And when hee was departed thence, he went into their Synagogue. 10 And behold, there was a man which had his hand withered, and they asked him, saying, Is it lawfull to heale on the Sabbath dayes? that they might accuse him. 11And hee said vnto them, What man shal there be among you, that shall haue one sheepe: and if it fall into a pit on the Sabbath day, will hee not lay hold on it, and lift it out? 12How much then is a man better then a shepe? Wherfore it is lawfull to doe well on the Sabbath dayes. 13Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand: and hee stretched it forth, and it was restored whole, like as the others 14 Then the Pharises went out, and held a counsell against him, how they might destroy him. GOD'S SERVANT 15But when Iesus knew it, hee withdrew himselfe from thence: and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all, 16And charged them that they should not make him knowen: 17That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the Prophet, saying, 18Behold, my seruant whom I haue chosen, my beloued in whom my soule is well pleased: I will put my spirit vpon him, and he shall shew iudgement to the Gentiles. 19He shall not striue, nor cry, neither shall any man heare his voice in the streets. 20A bruised reed shal he not breake, and smoking flaxe shall he not quench, till he send forth iudgment vnto victory. 21And in his name shall the Gentiles trust. THE POWER OF GOD OVER THE DEVIL 22 Then was brought vnto him one possessed with a deuill, blinde, and dumbe: and hee healed him, insomuch that the blinde and dumbe both spake and saw. 23And all the people were amazed, and said, Is this the sonne of Dauid? 24But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doeth not cast out deuils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the deuils. 25And Iesus knew their thoughts, and said vnto them, Euery kingdome diuided against it selfe, is brought to desolation: and euery citie or house diuided against it selfe, shall not stand. 26And if Satan cast out Satan, he is diuided against himselfe; how shall then his kingdome stand? 27And if I by Beelzebub cast out deuils, by whom doe your children cast them out? Therefore they shall be your Iudges. 28But if I cast out deuils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdome of God is come vnto you. 29Or else, how can one enter into a strong mans house, & spoile his goods, except hee first binde the strong man, and then he will spoile his house. 30He that is not with me, is against me: and hee that gathereth not with me, scattereth abroad. BLASPHEMY AGAINST THE HOLY SPIRIT 31 Wherefore I say vnto you, All maner of sinne and blasphemie shall be forgiuen vnto men: but the blasphemie against the holy Ghost, shall not bee forgiuen vnto men. 32And whosoeuer speaketh a word against the sonne of man, it shall be forgiuen him: but whosoeuer speaketh against the holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiuen him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come. A TREE IS KNOWN BY ITS FRUIT 33Either make the tree good, and his fruit good: Or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: For the tree is knowen by his fruit. 34O generation of vipers, how can ye, being euil, speake good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. 35A good man out of the good treasure of the heart, bringeth foorth good things: and an euill man out of the euill treasure, bringeth foorth euill things. 36But I say vnto you, That euery idle word that men shall speake, they shall giue accompt thereof in the day of Iudgement. 37For by thy wordes thou shalt bee iustified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned. THE DESIRE FOR SIGNS IS REBUKED 38 Then certaine of the Scribes, and of the Pharisees, answered, saying, Master, we would see a signe from thee. 39But hee answered, and said to them, An euill and adulterous generation seeketh after a signe, and there shall no signe be giuen to it, but the signe of the Prophet Ionas. 40For as Ionas was three dayes and three nights in the whales belly: so shal the sonne of man be three daies and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41The men of Nineue shall rise in iudgement with this generation, and shall condemne it, because they repented at the preaching of Ionas, and behold, a greater then Ionas is here. 42The Queene of the South shall rise vp in the iudgement with this generation, and shall condemne it: for she came from the vttermost parts of the earth to heare the wisedome of Solomon, and behold, a greater then Solomon is here. THE UNCLEAN SPIRIT RETURNS 43When the vncleane spirit is gone out of a man, hee walketh thorow dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. 44Then he saith, I will returne into my house from whence I came out; And when he is come, he findeth it emptie, swept, and garnished. 45Then goeth he, and taketh with himselfe seuen other spirits more wicked then himselfe, and they enter in and dwell there: And the last state of that man is worse then the first. Euen so shal it be also vnto this wicked generation. THE TRUE FAMILY OF JESUS 46 While he yet talked to the people, behold, his mother and his brethren stood without, desiring to speake with him. 47Then one saide vnto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speake with thee. 48But he answered, and said vnto him that told him, Who is my mother? And who are my brethren? 49And hee stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold, my mother and my brethren. 50For whosoeuer shall doe the will of my Father which is in heauen, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother. |

1 At that time Jesus was going through a field of grain on the sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick the heads of grain and eat them. 2 When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, "See, your disciples are doing what is unlawful to do on the sabbath." 3 He said to them, "Have you not read what David did when he and his companions were hungry, 4 how he went into the house of God and ate the bread of offering, which neither he nor his companions but only the priests could lawfully eat? 5 Or have you not read in the law that on the sabbath the priests serving in the temple violate the sabbath and are innocent? 6 I say to you, something greater than the temple is here. 7 If you knew what this meant, 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned these innocent men. 8 For the Son of Man is Lord of the sabbath." 9 Moving on from there, he went into their synagogue. 10 And behold, there was a man there who had a withered hand. They questioned him, "Is it lawful to cure on the sabbath?" 7 so that they might accuse him. 11 He said to them, "Which one of you who has a sheep that falls into a pit on the sabbath will not take hold of it and lift it out? 12 How much more valuable a person is than a sheep. So it is lawful to do good on the sabbath."13 Then he said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He stretched it out, and it was restored as sound as the other. 14 But the Pharisees went out and took counsel against him to put him to death. 15 When Jesus realized this, he withdrew from that place. Many (people) followed him, and he cured them all, 16 but he warned them not to make him known. 17 This was to fulfill what had been spoken through Isaiah the prophet: 18 "Behold, my servant whom I have chosen, my beloved in whom I delight; I shall place my spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles. 19 He will not contend or cry out, nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets. 20 A bruised reed he will not break, a smoldering wick he will not quench, until he brings justice to victory. 21 And in his name the Gentiles will hope." 22 Then they brought to him a demoniac who was blind and mute. He cured the mute person so that he could speak and see. 23 All the crowd was astounded, and said, "Could this perhaps be the Son of David?" 24 But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, "This man drives out demons only by the power of Beelzebul, the prince of demons." 25 But he knew what they were thinking and said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste, and no town or house divided against itself will stand. 26 And if Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself; how, then, will his kingdom stand? 27 And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your own people drive them out? Therefore they will be your judges. 28 But if it is by the Spirit of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. 29 How can anyone enter a strong man's house and steal his property, unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can plunder his house. 30 Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. 31 Therefore, I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. 32 And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven; but whoever speaks against the holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come. 33 "Either declare the tree good and its fruit is good, or declare the tree rotten and its fruit is rotten, for a tree is known by its fruit. 34 You brood of vipers, how can you say good things when you are evil? For from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 A good person brings forth good out of a store of goodness, but an evil person brings forth evil out of a store of evil. 36 I tell you, on the day of judgment people will render an account for every careless word they speak. 37 By your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned." 38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to him, "Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you." 39 He said to them in reply, "An evil and unfaithful generation seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it except the sign of Jonah the prophet. 40 Just as Jonah was in the belly of the whale three days and three nights, so will the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights. 41 At the judgment, the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and there is something greater than Jonah here. 42 At the judgment the queen of the south will arise with this generation and condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and there is something greater than Solomon here. 43 "When an unclean spirit goes out of a person it roams through arid regions searching for rest but finds none. 44 Then it says, 'I will return to my home from which I came.' But upon returning, it finds it empty, swept clean, and put in order. 45 Then it goes and brings back with itself seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they move in and dwell there; and the last condition of that person is worse than the first. Thus it will be with this evil generation." 46 While he was still speaking to the crowds, his mother and his brothers appeared outside, wishing to speak with him. 47 (Someone told him, "Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, asking to speak with you.") 48 But he said in reply to the one who told him, "Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?" 49 And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers. 50 For whoever does the will of my heavenly Father is my brother, and sister, and mother."

PLUCKING GRAIN ON THE SABBATH Called the Twelve loaves which were place before the sanctuary in the temple of God was called the LOAVES OF PROPOSITION. v 9-13. With Lk. 6:6-11. The man with the shriveled hand on the Sabbath was a definite set up by the Pharisees to accuse Jesus. He tested their motive by asking if it was right to do good on the Sabbath. Then turning to the man, He healed him to show that He was Lord also of the Sabbath. He did no ”work”, but simply spoke and the man was healed. This humiliated and infuriated the Pharisees and, Mk. 3:6, they counseled with the Herodians how they could destroy Jesus. v 14-21. Comparing Mk. 3:6-12. This humiliated and infuriated the Pharisees, and they counseled with the Herodians how they could destroy Jesus. He left for the Sea of Galilee and preached from a boat because of the crowd. He healed everyone and cast out demons. Unclean spirits fell before Him proclaiming Him the Son of God, but he told them to be quiet, men were to proclaim Him. He told men not to tee anyone about him because he didn't want to become popular. This portion adds the quote from Isa. 42:1-4, saying that Messiah would avoid popularity, be gentle and compassionate, even save Gentiles. v 22, This man was not only demonic, but blind and dumb. It is not said but he was probably deaf also, which is common. Compare Zacharias being struck dumb and not able to speak, Lk. 1:20. Yet he could not hear either, because the people had to make signs to him, Lk. 1:62, to ask what the baby should be called. The common people literally asked, “Could this be the Messiah?” V 23 THE SON OF DAVID? The son of David King Solomon reflects the Jewish tradition that he was empowered by God to exorcise demons. The same or similar abilities were expected of the coming Davidic Messiah. v 24-30. Unwilling to accept Jesus as Messiah, the Pharisees (and scribes, Mk. 3) concluded Jesus’ power came from Beelzebub, prince of demons, or Satan. Jesus’ defense was: THE BLASPHEMY OF THE SPIRIT: v 31,32. He warned them not to blaspheme against the Holy Ghost, because that sin could not be forgiven. Which if you think about it, it is The Holy Ghost that comes to us and is with us. This is why I believe those that believe "taking 0ne's own life" is the unforgivable sin is wrong. It is not accept the Holy Ghost and Christ as your savior. (Nor in the world to come: From these words St. Augustine (De Civ. Dei, lib. 21, c. 13) and St. Gregory (Dialog., 4, c. 39) gather, that some sins may be remitted in the world to come; and, consequently, that there is a purgatory or a middle place. ) Author unknown v 33-37. In comparing trees, Jesus called the Pharisees vipers, because their evil things came from their hearts. Their words would condemn them on judgment day. EVERY IDLE WORD: Many believe that this shows there is a place of temporal punishment hereafter where these slighter faults shall be punished. Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit: There is different churches that believe that the taking of your own life or suicide is a sin that the Holy Spirit will not forgive you for. “The unforgivable sin.” V 38-42. Unwilling to accept those miracles as a sign that Jesus was Messiah, the evil leaders asked for further sign. Jesus said they would not have any other sign but that of Jonah, Christ’s death, burial and resurrection, but by then it would be too late to accept Him and His kingdom. Ninevah repented before Jonah, but they would not before Messiah Himself. Even pagan Queen of Sheba who traveled far to see King Solomon would condemn these people, because Christ was better than Solomon. v. 40 “so shall the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth” Why would the son of man go to the heart or center of the earth? At the center or heart of the earth was two separated section that was divided by a great fixed gulf and one section was called Abraham’s bosom or Paradise and this section was for the saved. The other section was call hell or Sheol in the Hebrew Old Testament and Hades in the Greek new Testament. This section was for the lost or unsaved. The “Son of Man” or Jesus had two reasons for going to the heart of the earth. The first reason was to receive the keys to hell and to preach unto the lost spirits imprison that they be judged. 1st Peter 3:18-20 The second reason or purpose was to depopulate Abraham’s bosom of the saved Spirits. After this the Hell side still exists and the entire lost or unsaved still goes there. What has changed is that the section that was called Paradise or Abraham’s bosom is no longer there. When the spirit of a saved person is separated from his earthly body, the spirit now goes to be with Jesus Christ. Luke 23:43” "For those who believe in Purgatory and for those who don't. God can not look upon or be next to sin: "Purgatory: A State of final purification after death and before entrance into heaven for those who died in God's friendship, but were only imperfectly purified: A final cleaning of human imperfection before one is able to enter the joy of heaven." { 1 } THREE DAYS: According to the way that the Hebrews counted their days and nights, viz., from evening to evening . V 43-45. The Pharisees, like the man from whom the demon left, were attempting self reformation without the power of God. That man’s latter end was worse, and so it would be with these leaders. V 46-50. Mark 3:20,21 reported Jesus and disciples were so thronged they couldn’t even eat, and friends (literal family) tried to bring him home, thinking he had gone religious fanatic, insane. Mk. 3:31-35 is parallel with this. In ignoring the pleas of His family, Jesus showed the new relationship of all believers being His family. WHO IS MY MOTHER? This is not putting his mother down but to show that we shouldn't by any inordinate affection to our earthly parents that we should suffer ourselves to be taken from the service of God. { 1 } CATECHSM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH |
