KING JAMES BIBLE

1 And it came to pass in the four hundred and eightieth year after the children of Israel were come out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon's reign over Israel, in the month Zif, which is the second month, that he began to build the house of the LORD.

2 And the house which king Solomon built for the LORD, the length thereof was threescore cubits, and the breadth thereof twenty cubits, and the height thereof thirty cubits.

3 And the porch before the temple of the house, twenty cubits was the length thereof, according to the breadth of the house; and ten cubits was the breadth thereof before the house.

4 And for the house he made windows of narrow lights.

5 And against the wall of the house he built chambers round about, against the walls of the house round about, both of the temple and of the oracle: and he made chambers round about:

6 The nethermost chamber was five cubits broad, and the middle was six cubits broad, and the third was seven cubits broad: for without in the wall of the house he made narrowed rests round about, that the beams should not be fastened in the walls of the house.

7 And the house, when it was in building, was built of stone made ready before it was brought thither: so that there was neither hammer nor axe nor any tool of iron heard in the house, while it was in building.

8 The door for the middle chamber was in the right side of the house: and they went up with winding stairs into the middle chamber, and out of the middle into the third.

9 So he built the house, and finished it; and covered the house with beams and boards of cedar.

10 And then he built chambers against all the house, five cubits high: and they rested on the house with timber of cedar.

11 And the word of the LORD came to Solomon, saying,

12 Concerning this house which thou art in building, if thou wilt walk in my statutes, and execute my judgments, and keep all my commandments to walk in them; then will I perform my word with thee, which I spake unto David thy father:

13 And I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will not forsake my people Israel.

14 So Solomon built the house, and finished it.

15 And he built the walls of the house within with boards of cedar, both the floor of the house, and the walls of the cieling: and he covered them on the inside with wood, and covered the floor of the house with planks of fir.

16 And he built twenty cubits on the sides of the house, both the floor and the walls with boards of cedar: he even built them for it within, even for the oracle, even for the most holy place.

17 And the house, that is, the temple before it, was forty cubits long.

18 And the cedar of the house within was carved with knops and open flowers: all was cedar; there was no stone seen.

19 And the oracle he prepared in the house within, to set there the ark of the covenant of the LORD.

20 And the oracle in the forepart was twenty cubits in length, and twenty cubits in breadth, and twenty cubits in the height thereof: and he overlaid it with pure gold; and so covered the altar which was of cedar.

21 So Solomon overlaid the house within with pure gold: and he made a partition by the chains of gold before the oracle; and he overlaid it with gold.

22 And the whole house he overlaid with gold, until he had finished all the house: also the whole altar that was by the oracle he overlaid with gold.

23 And within the oracle he made two cherubims of olive tree, each ten cubits high.

24 And five cubits was the one wing of the cherub, and five cubits the other wing of the cherub: from the uttermost part of the one wing unto the uttermost part of the other were ten cubits.

25 And the other cherub was ten cubits: both the cherubims were of one measure and one size.

26 The height of the one cherub was ten cubits, and so was it of the other cherub.

27 And he set the cherubims within the inner house: and they stretched forth the wings of the cherubims, so that the wing of the one touched the one wall, and the wing of the other cherub touched the other wall; and their wings touched one another in the midst of the house.

28 And he overlaid the cherubims with gold.

29 And he carved all the walls of the house round about with carved figures of cherubims and palm trees and open flowers, within and without.

30 And the floor of the house he overlaid with gold, within and without.

31 And for the entering of the oracle he made doors of olive tree: the lintel and side posts were a fifth part of the wall.

32 The two doors also were of olive tree; and he carved upon them carvings of cherubims and palm trees and open flowers, and overlaid them with gold, and spread gold upon the cherubims, and upon the palm trees.

33 So also made he for the door of the temple posts of olive tree, a fourth part of the wall.

34 And the two doors were of fir tree: the two leaves of the one door were folding, and the two leaves of the other door were folding.

35 And he carved thereon cherubims and palm trees and open flowers: and covered them with gold fitted upon the carved work.

36 And he built the inner court with three rows of hewed stone, and a row of cedar beams.

37 In the fourth year was the foundation of the house of the LORD laid, in the month Zif:

38 And in the eleventh year, in the month Bul, which is the eighth month, was the house finished throughout all the parts thereof, and according to all the fashion of it. So was he seven years in building it.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 In the four hundred and eightieth year from the departure of the Israelites from the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon's reign over Israel, in the month of Ziv, which is the second month, the construction of the temple of the LORD was begun.

2 The temple which King Solomon built for the LORD was sixty cubits long, twenty wide, and twenty-five high.

3 The porch in front of the temple was twenty cubits from side to side, along the width of the nave, and ten cubits deep in front of the temple.

4 Splayed windows with trellises were made for the temple,

5 and adjoining the wall of the temple, which enclosed the nave and the sanctuary, an annex of several stories was built.

6 Its lowest story was five cubits wide, the middle one six cubits wide, the third seven cubits wide, because there were offsets along the outside of the temple so that the beams would not be fastened into the walls of the temple.

7 (The temple was built of stone dressed at the quarry, so that no hammer, axe, or iron tool was to be heard in the temple during its construction.)

8 The entrance to the lowest floor of the annex was at the right side of the temple, and stairs with intermediate landings led up to the middle story and from the middle story to the third.

9 When the temple was built to its full height, it was roofed in with rafters and boards of cedar.

10 The annex, with its lowest story five cubits high, was built all along the outside of the temple, to which it was joined by cedar beams.

11 This word of the LORD came to Solomon:

12 "As to this temple you are building - if you observe my statutes, carry out my ordinances, keep and obey all my commands, I will fulfill toward you the promise I made to your father David.

13 I will dwell in the midst of the Israelites and will not forsake my people Israel."

14 When Solomon finished building the temple,

15 its walls were lined from floor to ceiling beams with cedar paneling, and its floor was laid with fir planking.

16 At the rear of the temple a space of twenty cubits was set off by cedar partitions from the floor to the rafters, enclosing the sanctuary, the holy of holies.

17 The nave, or part of the temple in front of the sanctuary, was forty cubits long.

18 The cedar in the interior of the temple was carved in the form of gourds and open flowers; all was of cedar, and no stone was to be seen.

19 In the innermost part of the temple was located the sanctuary to house the ark of the LORD'S covenant,

20 twenty cubits long, twenty wide, and twenty high.

21 Solomon overlaid the interior of the temple with pure gold. He made in front of the sanctuary a cedar altar, overlaid it with gold, and looped it with golden chains.

22 The entire temple was overlaid with gold so that it was completely covered with it; the whole altar before the sanctuary was also overlaid with gold.

23 In the sanctuary were two cherubim, each ten cubits high, made of olive wood.

24 Each wing of a cherub measured five cubits so that the space from wing tip to wing tip of each was ten cubits.

25 The cherubim were identical in size and shape,

26 and each was exactly ten cubits high.

27 The cherubim were placed in the inmost part of the temple, with their wings spread wide, so that one wing of each cherub touched a side wall while the other wing, pointing toward the middle of the room, touched the corresponding wing of the second cherub.

28 The cherubim, too, were overlaid with gold.

29 The walls on all sides of both the inner and the outer rooms had carved figures of cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers.

30 The floor of both the inner and the outer rooms was overlaid with gold.

31 At the entrance of the sanctuary, doors of olive wood were made; the doorframes had beveled posts.

32 The two doors were of olive wood, with carved figures of cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers. The doors were overlaid with gold, which was also molded to the cherubim and the palm trees.

33 The same was done at the entrance to the nave, where the doorposts of olive wood were rectangular.

34 The two doors were of fir wood; each door was banded by a metal strap, front and back,

35 and had carved cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers, over which gold was evenly applied.

36 The inner court was walled off by means of three courses of hewn stones and one course of cedar beams.

37 The foundations of the LORD'S temple were laid in the month of Ziv

38 in the fourth year, and it was completed in all particulars, exactly according to plan, in the month of Bul, the eighth month, in the eleventh year. Thus it took Solomon seven years to build it.

COMMENTARIE

v 1. This is an important verse as it gives a reference point for dating other things. Combined with other ancient writings, Solomon’s reign is established at 971-931 B. C. 970 B. C. is the date of the 4th year of Solomen's reign. That is if we accept 1450 B.C. as the date of the Exodus. So that it shows 480 years between the two or 480 years out of the year of Israel. Now figures in Judges has alternate oppresings and deliverances appear to make a total of 410 years. Add tho the wilderness wandering 40 years unamed number of years of Joshua's leadership, Judgement of Eli and of Samuel, Saul's 40 years reign, David;s 40 years reigh comes to approunate 600 years, So some of these had to overlap each other. .

v 2-4. Depending on the length of the cubit, the temple figures to be 90’ long, 30’ wide, and 45’ high, with the porch adding another 15’ to the length. The narrow windows were above the side rooms.

v 5-7. The main building was the main hall and inner sanctuary, with a structure built around the outside on 2 or 3 sides of side rooms for priest’s storage. There were three stories with each room seven and a half feet high, the total being about twenty two and a half feet high. Their width increased from bottom to top from seven and one half feet to nine feet to ten and a half feet. The walls became narrower, so the offset ledges supported the upper levels, but the inside sat on rests of cedar beams, v 10. Thus they were not into the main walls but rested on the ledges of the main temple wall. Evidence still shows that the rock hewing was done at the quarries. Lumber likewise was accurately hewn off the site, ready to be put together like a do it yourself kit. They were prepared so there was no noise from that in the sanctuary. We should be preparing ourselves now to enter the heavenly sanctuary.

v 8-10. The temple faced east, so the door to the chambers would have been on the south. All the chambers were connected by passageways and winding staircases in a way we can not determine. The roof was of cedar wood.

v 11,12. While in the construction phase, God reminded Solomon that promises of 2 Sam. 7 are not based on the temple, but on obedience. (Or with ornate churches today.) Later Solomon disobeyed, leading to Rehoboam losing 10 of the tribes.

v 14-22. The floor of fir planks we might call cypress. All walls were wainscoted with cedar to the ceiling rafters,30’, and it also was cedar. The rear room, the Most Holy Place containing the ark, was 30’ x 30’ x 30’, and the main sanctuary 30’ x 30’ x 60’, a larger scale of the original tabernacle. It had veil, 2 Chr. 3;14, and doors described in v 31,32, maybe sliding, and opened and shut with golden chains, v21. The cedar incense altar, v 20, and all walls and ceiling, v 22,  were overlaid with gold.

v 23-28. In the most holy place were two cherubim of olive wood overlaid with gold. Each was 15’ high with 15’ wingspread so that they touched wings and the walls on either side. They were overlaid with gold.

v 29,32. We note that every wall and door in both rooms was carved with knops (gourds), open flowers, cherubim and palm trees, then overlaid with pure gold. Likewise the floor in both rooms was overlaid with pure gold. Everything gold. This  door opening was one fifth of the wall, or six feet wide and had two olive wood doors.

v 33-35. The posts of the outer temple door were olive wood, and the opening was one fourth the width of the building, or seven and one half feet wide. These bi-fold doors were of fir (probably cypress) and all doors were of the carving overlaid with gold except that no gourds are mentioned on the doors.

v 36. The inner, or upper or priests court surrounding the temple was three tiers of cut rock and one tier of cedar beams, Jews say low enough for the priests to see over. It was probably 150’ x 400’. and the doors were overlaid with bronze, 2 Chr. 4:9.

v 37,38. Construction was from Apr.-May of Solomon’s 4th year till Oct.- Nov. of his 11th year, actually seven and one half years. Additional information 2 Chr. 3.
