KING JAMES BIBLE

AT that time Abijah the son of Jeroboam fell sick.
2 And Jeroboam said to his wife, Arise, I pray thee, and disguise thyself, that thou be not known to be the wife of Jeroboam; and get thee to Shiloh: behold, there is Ahijah the prophet, which told me that I should be king over this people.
3 And take with thee ten loaves, and cracknels, and a cruse of honey, and go to him: he shall tell thee what shall become of the child.
4 And Jeroboam’s wife did so, and arose, and went to Shiloh, and came to the house of Ahijah. But Ahijah could not see; for his eyes were set by reason of his age.
5 And the Lord said unto Ahijah, Behold, the wife of Jeroboam cometh to ask a thing of thee for her son; for he is sick: thus and thus shalt thou say unto her: for it shall be, when she cometh in, that she shall feign herself to be another woman.
6 And it was so, when Ahijah heard the sound of her feet, as she came in at the door, that he said, Come in, thou wife of Jeroboam; why feignest thou thyself to be another? for I am sent to thee with heavy tidings.
7 Go, tell Jeroboam, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Forasmuch as I exalted thee from among the people, and made thee prince over my people Israel,
8 And rent the kingdom away from the house of David, and gave it thee: and yet thou hast not been as my servant David, who kept my commandments, and who followed me with all his heart, to do that only which was right in mine eyes;
9 But hast done evil above all that were before thee: for thou hast gone and made thee other gods, and molten images, to provoke me to anger, and hast cast me behind thy back:
10 Therefore, behold, I will bring evil upon the house of Jeroboam, and will cut off from Jeroboam him that pisseth against the wall, and him that is shut up and left in Israel, and will take away the remnant of the house of Jeroboam, as a man taketh away dung, till it be all gone.
11 Him that dieth of Jeroboam in the city shall the dogs eat; and him that dieth in the field shall the fowls of the air eat: for the Lord hath spoken it.
12 Arise thou therefore, get thee to thine own house: and when thy feet enter into the city, the child shall die.
13 And all Israel shall mourn for him, and bury him: for he only of Jeroboam shall come to the grave, because in him there is found some good thing toward the Lord God of Israel in the house of Jeroboam.
14 Moreover the Lord shall raise him up a king over Israel, who shall cut off the house of Jeroboam that day: but what? even now.
15 For the Lord shall smite Israel, as a reed is shaken in the water, and he shall root up Israel out of this good land, which he gave to their fathers, and shall scatter them beyond the river, because they have made their groves, provoking the Lord to anger.
16 And he shall give Israel up because of the sins of Jeroboam, who did sin, and who made Israel to sin.
17 And Jeroboam’s wife arose, and departed, and came to Tirzah: and when she came to the threshold of the door, the child died;
18 And they buried him; and all Israel mourned for him, according to the word of the Lord, which he spake by the hand of his servant Ahijah the prophet.
19 And the rest of the acts of Jeroboam, how he warred, and how he reigned, behold, they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.
20 And the days which Jeroboam reigned were two and twenty years: and he slept with his fathers, and Nadab his son reigned in his stead.
21 And Rehoboam the son of Solomon reigned in Judah. Rehoboam was forty and one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which the Lord did choose out of all the tribes of Israel, to put his name there. And his mother’s name was Naamah an Ammonitess.
22 And Judah did evil in the sight of the Lord, and they provoked him to jealousy with their sins which they had committed, above all that their fathers had done.
23 For they also built them high places, and images, and groves, on every high hill, and under every green tree.
24 And there were also sodomites in the land: and they did according to all the abominations of the nations which the Lord cast out before the children of Israel.
25 And it came to pass in the fifth year of king Rehoboam, that Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem:
26 And he took away the treasures of the house of the Lord, and the treasures of the king’s house; he even took away all: and he took away all the shields of gold which Solomon had made.
27 And king Rehoboam made in their stead brasen shields, and committed them unto the hands of the chief of the guard, which kept the door of the king’s house.
28 And it was so, when the king went into the house of the Lord, that the guard bare them, and brought them back into the guard chamber.
29 Now the rest of the acts of Rehoboam, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
30 And there was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam all their days.

31 And Rehoboam slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David. And his mother’s name was Naamah an Ammonitess. And Abijam his son reigned in his stead

16And hee shall giue Israel vp, because of the sinnes of Ieroboam, who did sinne, & who made Israel to sinne.

17 And Ieroboams wife arose, and departed, and came to Tirzah: and when shee came to the threshold of the doore, the child died.

18And they buried him, and all Israel mourned for him, according to the word of the Lord, which hee spake by the hand of his seruant Ahiiah the Prophet.

23For they also built them high places, and images, and groues on euery high hill, and vnder euery greene tree.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 At that time Abijah, son of Jeroboam, took sick.

2 So Jeroboam said to his wife, "Get ready and disguise yourself so that none will recognize you as Jeroboam's wife. Then go to Shiloh, where you will find the prophet Ahijah. It was he who predicted my reign over this people.

3 Take along ten loaves, some cakes, and a jar of preserves, and go to him. He will tell you what will happen to the child."

4 The wife of Jeroboam obeyed. She made the journey to Shiloh and entered the house of Ahijah who could not see because age had dimmed his sight.

5 The LORD had said to Ahijah: "Jeroboam's wife is coming to consult you about her son, for he is sick. This is what you must tell her. When she comes, she will be in disguise."

6 So Ahijah, hearing the sound of her footsteps as she entered the door, said, "Come in, wife of Jeroboam. Why are you in disguise? I have been commissioned to give you bitter news.

7 Go, tell Jeroboam, 'This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: I exalted you from among the people and made you ruler of my people Israel.

8 I deprived the house of David of the kingdom and gave it to you. Yet you have not been like my servant David, who kept my commandments and followed me with his whole heart, doing only what pleased me.

9 You have done worse than all who preceded you: you have gone and made for yourself strange gods and molten images to provoke me; but me you have cast behind your back.

10 Therefore, I am bringing evil upon the house of Jeroboam: I will cut off every male in Jeroboam's line, whether slave or freeman in Israel, and will burn up the house of Jeroboam completely, as though dung were being burned.

11 When one of Jeroboam's line dies in the city, dogs will devour him; when one of them dies in the field, he will be devoured by the birds of the sky. For the LORD has spoken!'

12 So leave; go home! As you step inside the city, the child will die,

13 and all Israel will mourn him and bury him, for he alone of Jeroboam's line will be laid in the grave, since in him alone of Jeroboam's house has something pleasing to the LORD, the God of Israel, been found.

14 Today, at this very moment, the LORD will raise up for himself a king of Israel who will destroy the house of Jeroboam.

15 The LORD will strike Israel like a reed tossed about in the water and will pluck out Israel from this good land which he gave their fathers, scattering them beyond the River, because they made sacred poles for themselves and thus provoked the LORD.

16 He will give up Israel because of the sins Jeroboam has committed and caused Israel to commit."

17 So Jeroboam's wife started back; when she reached Tirzah and crossed the threshold of her house, the child died.

18 He was buried with all Israel mourning him, as the LORD had prophesied through his servant the prophet Ahijah.

19 The rest of the acts of Jeroboam, with his warfare and his reign, are recorded in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.

20 The length of Jeroboam's reign was twenty-two years. He rested with his ancestors, and his son Nadab succeeded him as king.

21 Rehoboam, son of Solomon, reigned in Judah. He was forty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city in which, out of all the tribes of Israel, the LORD chose to be honored. His mother was the Ammonite named Naamah.

22 Judah did evil in the sight of the LORD, and by their sins angered him even more than their fathers had done.

23 They, too, built for themselves high places, pillars, and sacred poles, upon every high hill and under every green tree.

24 There were also cult prostitutes in the land. Judah imitated all the abominable practices of the nations whom the LORD had cleared out of the Israelites' way.

25 In the fifth year of King Rehoboam, Shishak, king of Egypt, attacked Jerusalem.

26 He took everything, including the treasures of the temple of the LORD and those of the royal palace, as well as all the gold shields made under Solomon.

27 To replace them, King Rehoboam had bronze shields made, which he entrusted to the officers of the guard on duty at the entrance of the royal palace.

28 Whenever the king visited the temple of the LORD, those on duty would carry the shields, and then return them to the guardroom.

29 The rest of the acts of Rehoboam, with all that he did, are recorded in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah.

30 There was constant warfare between Rehoboam and Jeroboam.

31 Rehoboam rested with his ancestors; he was buried with them in the City of David. His mother was the Ammonite named Naamah. His son Abijam succeeded him as king.

COMMENTARIE

v 1-4. Jeroboam knows Ahijah could tell if his sick son would live, but because of his sins, he was ashamed to go to the man who had appointed him king. He had his wife disguise herself before going to the nearly blind man to inquire.

5-9. God forewarned Ahijah so he knew it was Jeroboam’s wife, and gave her a heavy message for Jeroboam. He had angered God by making melted images and other gods, turning his back on the true God.

v 10,11. The man of God in chapter 13 had told Jeroboam of the destruction of his religious system. Ahijah tells him of the destruction of his dynasty. Every male in the household of Jeroboam, both bond and free, would be destroyed, eaten by dogs in the city or by birds in the field.

v 12,13. His only male descendant to be buried would be Abijah, who would die when she entered the city. This indicated the other prophecies would come true also.

v 14-16. A king (Baasha, 15:27-29) would cut off Jeroboam’s family soon, and the ten tribes of Israel would eventually be taken captive across the Euphrates (to Gozan, a tributary east of Haran, by Assyrians  2 Ki 17:6). They would be judged in captivity because of the sins Jeroboam had practiced and had led them into.

v 17,18. Before she entered her own house at Tirzah, no longer at Shechem, the child died and was then buried as Ahijah had told her.

v 19,20. In 2 Chr. 13, Jeroboam raised a huge army against Judah, but they trusted the Lord, so Jeroboam’s army lost 500,000 chosen men. He did not regain strength again and died, 2 Chr. 13:20. He reigned 22 years, followed by son Nadab.

v 21-24. We shift to Judah and king Rehoboam. His mother was Naamah, one of the heathen wives Solomon married, and as an Ammonite, she worshiped licentious Molech. She probably was a factor in leading Judah into idol worship and the cult homosexuals of verse 24, doing the same wickedness as the enemies who had been driven out of the land.

v 25-28. Because of Rehoboam’s wickedness, God permitted all those wonderful gold shields and vessels to be taken into Egypt by Shishak. Rehoboam replace them with bronze shields. Details in 2 Chr. 2:1-12 say 12,000 chariots, 60,000 horsemen and innumerable people from other countries were in the Egyptian attack and took many of Judah’s fortified cities. Shemaiah, a prophet, told Rehoboam and the princes that the defeat was because he had forsaken God, so they humbled themselves and God did not allow Shishak to destroy them. However God allowed them to be servants, so they would see the service to Shishak was the judgment of God.

v 29-31. Rehoboam died after reigning 17 years, v 21. See also 2 Chr. 12:13-16. There had been continual war with Jeroboam all this time. Rehoboam’s son Abijah followed.
