KING JAMES BIBLE

THEN the word of the Lord came to Jehu the son of Hanani against Baasha, saying,
2 Forasmuch as I exalted thee out of the dust, and made thee prince over my people Israel; and thou hast walked in the way of Jeroboam, and hast made my people Israel to sin, to provoke me to anger with their sins;
3 Behold, I will take away the posterity of Baasha, and the posterity of his house; and will make thy house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
4 Him that dieth of Baasha in the city shall the dogs eat; and him that dieth of his in the fields shall the fowls of the air eat.
5 Now the rest of the acts of Baasha, and what he did, and his might, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
6 So Baasha slept with his fathers, and was buried in Tirzah: and Elah his son reigned in his stead.
7 And also by the hand of the prophet Jehu the son of Hanani came the word of the Lord against Baasha, and against his house, even for all the evil that he did in the sight of the Lord, in provoking him to anger with the work of his hands, in being like the house of Jeroboam; and because he killed him.
8 In the twenty and sixth year of Asa king of Judah began Elah the son of Baasha to reign over Israel in Tirzah, two years.
9 And his servant Zimri, captain of half his chariots, conspired against him, as he was in Tirzah, drinking himself drunk in the house of Arza steward of his house in Tirzah.
10 And Zimri went in and smote him, and killed him, in the twenty and seventh year of Asa king of Judah, and reigned in his stead.
11 And it came to pass, when he began to reign, as soon as he sat on his throne, that he slew all the house of Baasha: he left him not one that pisseth against a wall, neither of his kinsfolks, nor of his friends.
12 Thus did Zimri destroy all the house of Baasha, according to the word of the Lord, which he spake against Baasha by Jehu the prophet,
13 For all the sins of Baasha, and the sins of Elah his son, by which they sinned, and by which they made Israel to sin, in provoking the Lord God of Israel to anger with their vanities.
14 Now the rest of the acts of Elah, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
15 In the twenty and seventh year of Asa king of Judah did Zimri reign seven days in Tirzah. And the people were encamped against Gibbethon, which belonged to the Philistines.
16 And the people that were encamped heard say, Zimri hath conspired, and hath also slain the king: wherefore all Israel made Omri, the captain of the host, king over Israel that day in the camp.
17 And Omri went up from Gibbethon, and all Israel with him, and they besieged Tirzah.
18 And it came to pass, when Zimri saw that the city was taken, that he went into the palace of the king’s house, and burnt the king’s house over him with fire, and died,
19 For his sins which he sinned in doing evil in the sight of the Lord, in walking in the way of Jeroboam, and in his sin which he did, to make Israel to sin.
20 Now the rest of the acts of Zimri, and his treason that he wrought, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
21 Then were the people of Israel divided into two parts: half of the people followed Tibni the son of Ginath, to make him king; and half followed Omri.
22 But the people that followed Omri prevailed against the people that followed Tibni the son of Ginath: so Tibni died, and Omri reigned.
23 In the thirty and first year of Asa king of Judah began Omri to reign over Israel, twelve years: six years reigned he in Tirzah.
24 And he bought the hill Samaria of Shemer for two talents of silver, and built on the hill, and called the name of the city which he built, after the name of Shemer, owner of the hill, Samaria.
25 But Omri wrought evil in the eyes of the Lord, and did worse than all that were before him.
26 For he walked in all the way of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and in his sin wherewith he made Israel to sin, to provoke the Lord God of Israel to anger with their vanities.
27 Now the rest of the acts of Omri which he did, and his might that he shewed, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
28 So Omri slept with his fathers, and was buried in Samaria: and Ahab his son reigned in his stead.
29 And in the thirty and eighth year of Asa king of Judah began Ahab the son of Omri to reign over Israel: and Ahab the son of Omri reigned over Israel in Samaria twenty and two years.
30 And Ahab the son of Omri did evil in the sight of the Lord above all that were before him.
31 And it came to pass, as if it had been a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, that he took to wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Zidonians, and went and served Baal, and worshipped him.
32 And he reared up an altar for Baal in the house of Baal, which he had built in Samaria.
33 And Ahab made a grove; and Ahab did more to provoke the Lord God of Israel to anger than all the kings of Israel that were before him.
34 In his days did Hiel the Beth-elite build Jericho: he laid the foundation thereof in Abiram his firstborn, and set up the gates thereof in his youngest son Segub, according to the word of the Lord, which he spake by Joshua the son of Nun.

KING JAMES 1611

1Then the word of the Lord came to Iehu the sonne of Hanani, against Baasha, saying,

2Forasmuch as I exalted thee out of the dust, and made thee Prince ouer my people Israel, and thou hast walked in the way of Ieroboam, and hast made my people Israel to sinne, to prouoke mee to anger with their sinnes:

3Behold, I will take away the posteritie of Baasha, and the posteritie of his house: and will make thy house like the house of Ieroboam the sonne of Nebat.

4Him that dieth of Baasha in the citie, shall the dogs eate: and him that dieth of his in the fields, shall the foules of the aire eate.

5Now the rest of the actes of Baasha, and what he did, and his might, are they not written in the booke of the Chronicles of the kings of Israel?

6So Baasha slept with his fathers, and was buried in Tirzah, and Elah his sonne reigned in his stead.

7And also by the hand of the prophet Iehu the sonne of Hanani, came the word of the Lord against Baasha, and against his house, euen for all the euill that hee did in the sight of the Lord, in prouoking him to anger with the worke of his hands, in being like the house of Ieroboam, and because he killed him.

8 In the twentieth and sixt yeere of Asa king of Iudah, began Elah the sonne of Baasha to reigne ouer Israel in Tirzah, two yeeres.

9And his seruant Zimri (captaine of halfe his charets) conspired against him as he was in Tirzah drinking himselfe drunke in the house of Arza steward of his house in Tirzah.

10And Zimri went in and smote him, and killed him, in the twentie and seuenth yeere of Asa king of Iudah, and reigned in his stead.

11 And it came to passe when hee began to reigne, assoone as hee sate on his throne, that he slew all the house of Baasha: hee left him not one that pisseth against a wall, neither of his kinsfolkes, nor of his friends.

12Thus did Zimri destroy all the house of Baasha, according to the word of the Lord, which he spake against Baasha by Iehu the prophet,

13For all the sinnes of Baasha and the sinnes of Elah his sonne, by which they sinned, and by which they made Israel to sinne, in prouoking the Lord God of Israel to anger with their vanities.

14Now the rest of the actes of Elah, and all that he did, are they not written in the booke of the Chronicles of the kings of Israel?

15 In the twentie and seuenth yeere of Asa king of Iudah, did Zimri reigne seuen dayes in Tirzah: and the people were encamped against Gibbethon which belonged to the Philistines.

16And the people that were encamped, heard say, Zimri hath conspired, and hath also slaine the king: Wherfore all Israel made Omri the captaine of the hoste, king ouer Israel that day, in the campe.

17And Omri went vp from Gibbethon, and all Israel with him, and they besieged Tirzah.

18And it came to passe when Zimri saw that the citie was taken, that hee went into the palace of the kings house, and burnt the kings house ouer him with fire, and died,

19For his sinnes which he sinned in doing euill in the sight of the Lord, in walking in the way of Ieroboam, and in his sinne which he did, to make Israel sinne.

20Now the rest of the acts of Zimri, and his treason that hee wrought, are they not written in the booke of the Chronicles of the kings of Israel?

21 Then were the people of Israel diuided into two parts: halfe of the people followed Tibni the sonne of Ginath, to make him king: and halfe followed Omri.

22But the people that followed Omri preuailed against the people that followed Tibni the sonne of Ginath: so Tibni died, and Omri reigned.

23 In the thirtie and one yeere of Asa king of Iudah, began Omri to reigne ouer Israel twelue yeeres: sixe yeeres reigned he in Tirzah.

24And hee bought the hill Samaria of Shemer, for two talents of siluer, and built on the hill, and called the name of the citie which hee built, after the name of Shemer, owner of the hill, Samaria.

25 But Omri wrought euil in the eyes of the Lord, and did worse then all that were before him.

26For he walked in all the way of Ieroboam the son of Nebat, and in his sinne wherewith hee made Israel to sinne, to prouoke the Lord God of Israel to anger with their vanities.

27Now the rest of the acts of Omri, which he did, and his might that he shewed, are they not written in the booke of the Chronicles of the kings of Israel?

28So Omri slept with his fathers, and was buried in Samaria, and Ahab his sonne reigned in his stead.

29 And in the thirtie and eight yeere of Asa king of Iudah, began Ahab the sonne of Omri to reigne ouer Israel, and Ahab the sonne of Omri reigned ouer Israel in Samaria, twentie and two yeeres.

30And Ahab the sonne of Omri did euill in the sight of the Lord, aboue all that were before him.

31And it came to passe, as if it had beene a light thing for him to walke in the sinnes of Ieroboam the sonne of Nebat; that hee tooke to wife Iezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Zidonians, and went and serued Baal, and worshipped him.

32And hee reared vp an Altar for Baal, in the house of Baal, which hee had built in Samaria.

33And Ahab made a groue, and Ahab did more to prouoke the Lord God of Israel to anger, then all the kings of Israel that were before him.

34 In his dayes did Hiel the Bethelite build Iericho: he laid the foundation therof in Abiram his first borne, and set vp the gates thereof in his yongest sonne Segub, according to the word of the Lord, which hee spake by Ioshua the sonne of Nun.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 The LORD spoke against Baasha to Jehu, son of Hanani, and said:

2 "Inasmuch as I lifted you up from the dust and made you ruler of my people Israel, but you have imitated the conduct of Jeroboam and have caused my people Israel to sin, provoking me to anger by their sins,

3 I will destroy you, Baasha, and your house;

4 I will make your house like that of Jeroboam, son of Nebat. If anyone of Baasha's line dies in the city, dogs shall devour him; if he dies in the field, he shall be devoured by the birds of the sky."

5 The rest of the acts of Baasha, with all his valor and accomplishments, are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.

6 Baasha rested with his ancestors; he was buried in Tirzah, and his son Elah succeeded him as king.

7 (Through the prophet Jehu, son of Hanani, the LORD had threatened Baasha and his house, because of all the evil Baasha did in the sight of the LORD, provoking him to anger by his evil deeds, so that he became like the house of Jeroboam; and because he killed Nadab.)

8 In the twenty-sixth year of Asa, king of Judah, Elah, son of Baasha, began his two-year reign over Israel in Tirzah.

9 His servant Zimri, commander of half his chariots, plotted against him. As he was in Tirzah, drinking to excess in the house of Arza, superintendent of his palace in Tirzah,

10 Zimri entered; he struck and killed him in the twenty-seventh year of Asa, king of Judah, and reigned in his place.

11 Once he was seated on the royal throne, he killed off the whole house of Baasha, not sparing a single male relative or friend of his.

12 Zimri destroyed the entire house of Baasha, as the LORD had prophesied to Baasha through the prophet Jehu,

13 because of all the sins which Baasha and his son Elah committed and caused Israel to commit, provoking the LORD, the God of Israel, to anger by their idols.

14 The rest of the acts of Elah, with all that he did, are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.

15 In the twenty-seventh year of Asa, king of Judah, Zimri reigned seven days in Tirzah. The army was besieging Gibbethon of the Philistines

16 when they heard that Zimri had formed a conspiracy and had killed the king. So that day in the camp all Israel proclaimed Omri, general of the army, king of Israel.

17 Omri marched up from Gibbethon, accompanied by all Israel, and laid siege to Tirzah.

18 When Zimri saw the city was captured, he entered the citadel of the royal palace and burned down the palace over him. He died

19 because of the sins he had committed, doing evil in the sight of the LORD by imitating the sinful conduct of Jeroboam, thus causing Israel to sin.

20 The rest of the acts of Zimri, with the conspiracy he carried out, are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.

21 At that time the people of Israel were divided, half following Tibni, son of Ginath, to make him king, and half for Omri.

22 The partisans of Omri prevailed over those of Tibni, son of Ginath. Tibni died and Omri became king.

23 In the thirty-first year of Asa, king of Judah, Omri became king; he reigned over Israel twelve years, the first six of them in Tirzah.

24 He then bought the hill of Samaria from Shemer for two silver talents and built upon the hill, naming the city he built Samaria after Shemer, the former owner.

25 But Omri did evil in the LORD'S sight beyond any of his predecessors.

26 He closely imitated the sinful conduct of Jeroboam, son of Nebat, causing Israel to sin and to provoke the LORD, the God of Israel, to anger by their idols.

27 The rest of the acts of Omri, with all his valor and accomplishments, are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.

28 Omri rested with his ancestors; he was buried in Samaria, and his son Ahab succeeded him as king.

29 In the thirty-eighth year of Asa, king of Judah, Ahab, son of Omri, became king of Israel; he reigned over Israel in Samaria for twenty-two years.

30 Ahab, son of Omri, did evil in the sight of the LORD more than any of his predecessors.

31 It was not enough for him to imitate the sins of Jeroboam, son of Nebat. He even married Jezebel, daughter of Ethbaal, king of the Sidonians, and went over to the veneration and worship of Baal.

32 Ahab erected an altar to Baal in the temple of Baal which he built in Samaria,

33 and also made a sacred pole. He did more to anger the LORD, the God of Israel, than any of the kings of Israel before him.

34 During his reign, Hiel from Bethel rebuilt Jericho. He lost his first-born son, Abiram, when he laid the foundation, and his youngest son, Segub, when he set up the gates, as the LORD had foretold through Joshua, son of Nun.

COMMENTARIE

v 1-7. Jehu rebuked wicked Baasha without any repercussion, but his father had rebuked righteous Asa, and Asa put him in jail. Believers must watch their attitudes. God had taken away Jeroboam’s posterity because of his sins, and he will take away Baasha’s with the same totality for his sins (compare v 4 with 1 Ki. 14:11). Baasha had not killed Jeroboam, but his son, Nadab and the rest of Jeroboam’s household.

v 8-10.  After Baasha died, his son, Elah,  reigned shy of two years and was killed by Zimri, captain of half his chariots. Zimri committed treason and murdered him while he was getting drunk at his steward’s house.

v 11-14. Zimri ruthlessly slew all of Baasha’s household, all his kindred, and all who were known to be friends to him. Elah was wicked like his father, v 13, and this his fulfilled the prophecy of v 4, but it did not excuse Zimri’s murders.

v 15-20. Zimri only ruled seven days, when the people who were encamped against the Philistines heard of it, and they made Omri king right there in the camp. Omri and the army went right up, besieged the city of Tirzah and took it. When Zimri saw that, he committed suicide by burning the palace down over himself. God allowed that as judgment for his sin of murder and other sins which he copied from Jeroboam.

v 21,22. A power struggle ensued with half the people following Tibni and half following Omri, but Omri’s side won and Tibni died. In other words he was killed.

v 23,24. Omri ruled from Tirzah six years, then bought the hill of Samaria from it’s owner, Shemer, built on it, and reigned six more years.

v 25-27. Omri not only followed in the sins Jeroboam, but was more wicked than all the kings who were before him.

v 28-33. When Omri died, his son Ahab began rule in the 38th year of Asa, king of Judah. All the kings of the ten tribes have been getting progressively worse, following in the sins of Jeroboam, but Ahab, son of Omri exceeded them in wickedness,v 33. He began in the 38th year of Asa in Judah and reigned 22 years in Samaria. His greatest sin was in marrying Jezebel, who got him to build a house for Baal and worshiping him. Jezebel was the chief princess of the Tyre god Baal. (Baal was an indiscriminate term for gods in various places, slightly different in practice but similar. In Tyre, Baal was believed to be the god that controlled storms and rain, hence God’s judgment and proof of power in chapter 17. Tyre Baal worship also involved worship of snakes, male and female prostitution, and murder and sacrifice of babies (children).

v 34. In Ahab’s days, Hiel rebuilt Jericho at the cost of the life of his oldest son when he laid the foundation, and the death of his youngest when he set up the gates. (Some think all sons in between died also.) This was nearly 600 years later, but was exactly the curse pronounced by Joshua in Josh. 6:26.

OMRI BUILT SAMARIA (i KINGS 7:9-12) Evidence that he was founder of the city when a Harvard University Expedition with no relics older than the time of Omri was found when they uncovered the ruins of Omri's palace in Samaria.
