KING JAMES BIBLE

1 And it came to pass, when Solomon had finished the building of the house of the LORD, and the king's house, and all Solomon's desire which he was pleased to do,

2 That the LORD appeared to Solomon the second time, as he had appeared unto him at Gibeon.

3 And the LORD said unto him, I have heard thy prayer and thy supplication, that thou hast made before me: I have hallowed this house, which thou hast built, to put my name there for ever; and mine eyes and mine heart shall be there perpetually.

4 And if thou wilt walk before me, as David thy father walked, in integrity of heart, and in uprightness, to do according to all that I have commanded thee, and wilt keep my statutes and my judgments:

5 Then I will establish the throne of thy kingdom upon Israel for ever, as I promised to David thy father, saying, There shall not fail thee a man upon the throne of Israel.

6 But if ye shall at all turn from following me, ye or your children, and will not keep my commandments and my statutes which I have set before you, but go and serve other gods, and worship them:

7 Then will I cut off Israel out of the land which I have given them; and this house, which I have hallowed for my name, will I cast out of my sight; and Israel shall be a proverb and a byword among all people:

8 And at this house, which is high, every one that passeth by it shall be astonished, and shall hiss; and they shall say, Why hath the LORD done thus unto this land, and to this house?

9 And they shall answer, Because they forsook the LORD their God, who brought forth their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and have taken hold upon other gods, and have worshipped them, and served them: therefore hath the LORD brought upon them all this evil.

10 And it came to pass at the end of twenty years, when Solomon had built the two houses, the house of the LORD, and the king's house,

11 (Now Hiram the king of Tyre had furnished Solomon with cedar trees and fir trees, and with gold, according to all his desire,) that then king Solomon gave Hiram twenty cities in the land of Galilee.

12 And Hiram came out from Tyre to see the cities which Solomon had given him; and they pleased him not.

13 And he said, What cities are these which thou hast given me, my brother? And he called them the land of Cabul unto this day.

14 And Hiram sent to the king sixscore talents of gold.

15 And this is the reason of the levy which king Solomon raised; for to build the house of the LORD, and his own house, and Millo, and the wall of Jerusalem, and Hazor, and Megiddo, and Gezer.

16 For Pharaoh king of Egypt had gone up, and taken Gezer, and burnt it with fire, and slain the Canaanites that dwelt in the city, and given it for a present unto his daughter, Solomon's wife.

17 And Solomon built Gezer, and Bethhoron the nether,

18 And Baalath, and Tadmor in the wilderness, in the land,

19 And all the cities of store that Solomon had, and cities for his chariots, and cities for his horsemen, and that which Solomon desired to build in Jerusalem, and in Lebanon, and in all the land of his dominion.

20 And all the people that were left of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, which were not of the children of Israel,

21 Their children that were left after them in the land, whom the children of Israel also were not able utterly to destroy, upon those did Solomon levy a tribute of bondservice unto this day.

22 But of the children of Israel did Solomon make no bondmen: but they were men of war, and his servants, and his princes, and his captains, and rulers of his chariots, and his horsemen.

23 These were the chief of the officers that were over Solomon's work, five hundred and fifty, which bare rule over the people that wrought in the work.

24 But Pharaoh's daughter came up out of the city of David unto her house which Solomon had built for her: then did he build Millo.

25 And three times in a year did Solomon offer burnt offerings and peace offerings upon the altar which he built unto the LORD, and he burnt incense upon the altar that was before the LORD. So he finished the house.

26 And king Solomon made a navy of ships in Eziongeber, which is beside Eloth, on the shore of the Red sea, in the land of Edom.

27 And Hiram sent in the navy his servants, shipmen that had knowledge of the sea, with the servants of Solomon.

28 And they came to Ophir, and fetched from thence gold, four hundred and twenty talents, and brought it to king Solomon.

KING JAMES 1611

1And it came to passe, when Solomon had finished the building of the house of the Lord, and the kings house, and all Solomons desire which hee was pleased to doe,

2That the Lord appeared to Solomon the second time, as hee had appeared vnto him at Gibeon.

3And the Lord said vnto him, I haue heard thy prayer and thy supplication that thou hast made before me: I haue hallowed this house which thou hast built, to put my Name there for euer, and mine eyes and mine heart shall be there perpetually.

4And if thou wilt walke before me, as Dauid thy father walked, in integritie of heart, and in vprightnesse, to doe according to all that I haue commanded thee, and wilt keepe my Statutes, and my Iudgements:

5Then I will establish the throne of thy kingdome vpon Israel for euer, as I promised to Dauid thy father, saying, There shall not faile thee a man vpon the throne of Israel.

6But if you shall at all turne from following me, you or your children, and will not keepe my Commandements, and my Statutes, which I haue set before you, but goe and serue other gods, and worship them:

7Then will I cut off Israel out of the land which I haue giuen them; and this house which I haue hallowed for my Name, will I cast out of my sight, and Israel shall bee a prouerbe, and a by-word among all people:

8And at this house which is high, euery one that passeth by it, shalbe astonished, and shall hisse, and they shal say, Why hath the Lord done thus vnto this land, and to this house?

9And they shall answere, Because they forsooke the Lord their God, who brought forth their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and haue taken hold vpon other gods, and haue worshipped them, and serued them: therefore hath the Lord brought vpon them all this euill.

10 And it came to passe at the end of twentie yeeres, when Solomon had built the two houses, the house of the Lord, and the Kings house,

11(Now Hiram the king of Tyre had furnished Solomon with Cedar trees, and firre trees, and with golde according to al his desire) that then Solomon gaue Hiram twentie cities in the land of Galile.

12And Hiram came out from Tyre to see the cities which Solomon had giuen him, and they pleased him not.

13And he said, What cities are these which thou hast giuen me, my brother? And he called them the land of Cabul vnto this day.

14And Hiram sent to the king sixe score talents of gold.

15 And this is the reason of the leuie which king Solomon raised, for to build the house of the Lord, and his owne house, and Millo, and the wall of Ierusalem, and Hazor, and Megiddo, and Gezer.

16For Pharaoh king of Egypt had gone vp, and taken Gezer, and burnt it with fire, and slaine the Canaanites that dwelt in the citie, and giuen it for a present vnto his daughter Solomons wife.

17And Solomon built Gezer, and Beth-horon the nether,

18And Baalath, and Tadmor in the wildernesse, in the land.

19And all the cities of store that Solomon had, and cities for his charets, and cities for his horsemen, and that which Solomon disired to build in Ierusalem, and in Lebanon, and in all the land of his dominion.

20And all the people that were left of the Amorites, Hittittes, Perizzites, Hiuites, and Iebusites, which were not of the children of Israel,

21Their children that were left after them in the land, whom the children of Israel also were not able vtterly to destroy, vpon those did Solomon leuie a tribute of bond-seruice vnto this day.

22But of the children of Israel did Solomon make no bondmen: but they were men of warre, and his seruants, and his princes, and his captaines, and rulers of his charets, and his horsemen.

23These were the chiefe of the officers that were ouer Solomons worke, fiue hundred and fiftie, which bare rule ouer the people that wrought in the worke.

24 But Pharaohs daughter came vp out of the citie of Dauid, vnto her house which Solomon had built for her: then did he build Millo.

25 And three times in a yeere did Solomon offer burnt offerings, and peace offerings vpon the Altar which he built vnto the Lord, and he burnt incense vpon the altar that was before the Lord: so he finished the house.

26 And king Solomon made a nauie of ships in Ezion Geber, which is beside Eloth, on the shoare of the red sea, in the land of Edom.

27And Hiram sent in the nauie his seruants, shipmen that had knowledge of the Sea, with the seruants of Solomon.

28And they came to Ophir, and fet from thence gold foure hundred and twentie talents, and brought it to king Solomon.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 After Solomon finished building the temple of the LORD, the royal palace, and everything else that he had planned,

2 the LORD appeared to him a second time, as he had appeared to him in Gibeon.

3 The LORD said to him: "I have heard the prayer of petition which you offered in my presence. I have consecrated this temple which you have built; I confer my name upon it forever, and my eyes and my heart shall be there always.

4 As for you, if you live in my presence as your father David lived, sincerely and uprightly, doing just as I have commanded you, keeping my statutes and decrees,

5 I will establish your throne of sovereignty over Israel forever, as I promised your father David when I said, 'You shall always have someone from your line on the throne of Israel.'

6 But if you and your descendants ever withdraw from me, fail to keep the commandments and statutes which I set before you, and proceed to venerate and worship strange gods,

7 I will cut off Israel from the land I gave them and repudiate the temple I have consecrated to my honor. Israel shall become a proverb and a byword among all nations,

8 and this temple shall become a heap of ruins. Every passerby shall catch his breath in amazement, and ask, 'Why has the LORD done this to the land and to this temple?'

9 Men will answer: 'They forsook the LORD, their God, who brought their fathers out of the land of Egypt; they adopted strange gods which they worshiped and served. That is why the LORD has brought down upon them all this evil.'"

10 After the twenty years during which Solomon built the two houses, the temple of the LORD and the palace of the king -

11 Hiram, king of Tyre, supplying Solomon with all the cedar wood, fir wood, and gold he wished - King Solomon gave Hiram twenty cities in the land of Galilee.

12 Hiram left Tyre to see the cities Solomon had given him, but was not satisfied with them.

13 So he said, "What are these cities you have given me, my brother?" And he called them the land of Cabul, as they are called to this day.

14 Hiram, however, had sent king Solomon one hundred and twenty talents of gold.

15 This is an account of the forced labor which King Solomon levied in order to build the temple of the LORD, his palace, Millo, the wall of Jerusalem, Hazor, Megiddo, Gezer

16 (Pharaoh, king of Egypt, had come up and taken Gezer and, after destroying it by fire and slaying all the Canaanites living in the city, had given it as dowry to his daughter, Solomon's wife;

17 Solomon then rebuilt Gezer), Lower Beth-horon,

18 Baalath, Tamar in the desert of Judah,

19 all his cities for supplies, cities for chariots and for horses, and whatever else Solomon decided should be built in Jerusalem, in Lebanon, and in the entire land under his dominion.

20 All the non-Israelite people who remained in the land, descendants of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites

21 whose doom the Israelites had been unable to accomplish, Solomon conscripted as forced laborers, as they are to this day.

22 But Solomon enslaved none of the Israelites, for they were his fighting force, his ministers, commanders, adjutants, chariot officers, and charioteers.

23 The supervisors of Solomon's works who policed the people engaged in the work numbered five hundred and fifty.

24 As soon as Pharaoh's daughter went up from the City of David to her palace, which he had built for her, Solomon built Millo.

25 Three times a year Solomon used to offer holocausts and peace offerings on the altar which he had built to the LORD, and to burn incense before the LORD; and he kept the temple in repair.

26 King Solomon also built a fleet at Ezion-geber, which is near Elath on the shore of the Red Sea in the land of Edom.

27 In this fleet Hiram placed his own expert seamen with the servants of Solomon.

28 They went to Ophir, and brought back four hundred and twenty talents of gold to King Solomon.

COMMENTARIE

v 1,2. This is the same time the Lord appeared to him in 2 Chron. 7 after the huge sacrifices during which Solomon hallowed the court for sacrifices, because the bronze altar was too small. The appearance was after the Feast of Tabernacles and the Lord gave him the famous secret for revival in 2 Chr. 7:14. The first appearance at Gibeon was in the early years of his reign, 1 Ki. 3:5, when God offered him anything he might ask, and he asked for wisdom. **
v 3. God informs him He had heard the prayer and began several considerations.
v 4. If Solomon was obedient.

v 5. Then God would establish his kingdom as promised to David.

v 6. But if he disobeyed and served other gods,

v 7-9. Then God would (1) cut off Israel from their land, (2) the temple would be ruined and (3) Israel become a byword (It still is today.). All nations would know it was because they had forsaken God and turned to other gods.

v 10-14. About the midpoint of Solomon’s reign, he attempted to reward Hiram for services by giving him twenty adjoining cities. Hiram found them unproductive land and unsuitable for his maritime interests, however useful they might be to others. He declined them or, as some they kept them until Solomon’s debt to him was paid. Apparently Solomon made more satisfactory settlement and populated the cities with Israelites, 2 Chr. 8:2. o15-19. Solomon embarked on many building projects, among them rebuilding Gezer, which Pharaoh had given his daughter for dowry when she married Solomon. Others in these verses were fortified defense cities, storage cities and cities for his horses for defense. (2 Chr. 8:3-6 list other named and unnamed cities.) Solomon was keeping horses contrary to God’s command, Deut. 17:16, already beginning to rely on the flesh instead of the Lord. Much of his building was for his own satisfaction, not for productive economics. Perhaps David foresaw Solomon’s building skills  when he wrote Ps. 127:1, “Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it.....”.

v 20-23. Solomon had 550 supervisors, (250 of them Israelites 2 Chr. 8:10); 3,300 foremen (1 Ki. 5:16) and conscripted labor from people of the area who they had not completely destroyed. Israelites were not slaves but soldiers captains etc. (2 Chr. 8:9).

v 24. Solomon had spiritual sense to move Pharaoh’s daughter from his house near which the ark had been in the city of David, to her house in the temple complex, because he felt the pagan would defile the sacred places (2 Chr. 8:11). Millo, here, was a well known part of the fortification of Jerusalem, a breach in the wall being repaired there.

v 25. Solomon did not do the actual sacrifice as Uzziah did, 1 Chr. 26:18-21, but had the priests offer for him. His desire was to still be spiritual before the Lord, but he was slipping and later failure is seen in 11:7,8. (2 Chr. 8:12-16 detail the three times a year as feast of unleavened bread; feast of weeks; feast of tabernacles; plus daily, new moons and sabbaths. The order of courses and duties is also given 1 Kings 4:1-34.)

v 26-28. Solomon and Hiram continued friendly relations, and Hiram provided experienced sailors to assist Solomon’s navy. The Ezion-geber port is in the gulf of Aqaba on the east arm of the Red Sea. (Excavations in this area in 1937-40 found copper refineries of the 10th century B.C. during Solomon’s reign.) Ophir was probably in southwestern Arabia, and is noted for it’s gold also in Job 22:24 and 28:16.

SOLOMON'S NAVY AT EZIEN-GABER (i KINGS 9:26) The ruins of Ezion-geber were identified by Glueck (1938-39) and found smelters, furnaces, crucibles and refineries of Solomon's time. These furnaces, smelters, crucibies and refineries were used for manufacturing iron and copper into metal products that were exported to India, Arabia and Africa in exchange for ivory and gold.
