1 AND, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of the Lord unto Beth-el: and Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense.
2 And he cried against the altar in the word of the Lord, and said, O altar, altar, thus saith the Lord; Behold, a child shall be born unto the house of David, Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he offer the priests of the high places that burn incense upon thee, and men’s bones shall be burnt upon thee.
3 And he gave a sign the same day, saying, This is the sign which the Lord hath spoken; Behold, the altar shall be rent, and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out.
4 And it came to pass, when king Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, which had cried against the altar in Beth-el, that he put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not pull it in again to him.
5 The altar also was rent, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the word of the Lord.
6 And the king answered and said unto the man of God, Intreat now the face of the Lord thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the man of God besought the Lord, and the king’s hand was restored him again, and became as it was before.
7 And the king said unto the man of God, Come home with me, and refresh thyself, and I will give thee a reward.
8 And the man of God said unto the king, If thou wilt give me half thine house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place:
9 For so was it charged me by the word of the Lord, saying, Eat no bread, nor drink water, nor turn again by the same way that thou camest.
10 So he went another way, and returned not by the way that he came to Beth-el.
11 Now there dwelt an old prophet in Beth-el; and his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Beth-el: the words which he had spoken unto the king, them they told also to their father.
12 And their father said unto them, What way went he? For his sons had seen what way the man of God went, which came from Judah.
13 And he said unto his sons, Saddle me the ass. So they saddled him the ass: and he rode thereon,
14 And went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak: and he said unto him, Art thou the man of God that camest from Judah? And he said, I am.
15 Then he said unto him, Come home with me, and eat bread.
16 And he said, I may not return with thee, nor go in with thee: neither will I eat bread nor drink water with thee in this place:
17 For it was said to me by the word of the Lord, Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest.
18 He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the Lord, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him.
19 So he went back with him, and did eat bread in his house, and drank water.
20 And it came to pass, as they sat at the table, that the word of the Lord came unto the prophet that brought him back:
21 And he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith the Lord, Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the Lord, and hast not kept the commandment which the Lord thy God commanded thee,
22 But camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the place, of the which the Lord did say to thee, Eat no bread, and drink no water; thy carcase shall not come unto the sepulchre of thy fathers.
23 And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread, and after he had drunk, that he saddled for him the ass, to wit, for the prophet whom he had brought back.
24 And when he was gone, a lion met him by the way, and slew him: and his carcase was cast in the way, and the ass stood by it, the lion also stood by the carcase.
25 And, behold, men passed by, and saw the carcase cast in the way, and the lion standing by the carcase: and they came and told it in the city where the old prophet dwelt.
26 And when the prophet that brought him back from the way heard thereof, he said, It is the man of God, who was disobedient unto the word of the Lord: therefore the Lord hath delivered him unto the lion, which hath torn him, and slain him, according to the word of the Lord, which he spake unto him.
27 And he spake to his sons, saying, Saddle me the ass. And they saddled him.
28 And he went and found his carcase cast in the way, and the ass and the lion standing by the carcase: the lion had not eaten the carcase, nor torn the ass.
29 And the prophet took up the carcase of the man of God, and laid it upon the ass, and brought it back: and the old prophet came to the city, to mourn and to bury him.
30 And he laid his carcase in his own grave; and they mourned over him, saying, Alas, my brother!
31 And it came to pass, after he had buried him, that he spake to his sons, saying, When I am dead, then bury me in the sepulchre wherein the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones:
32 For the saying which he cried by the word of the Lord against the altar in Beth-el, and against all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria, shall surely come to pass.
33 After this thing Jeroboam returned not from his evil way, but made again of the lowest of the people priests of the high places: whosoever would, he consecrated him, and he became one of the priests of the high places.
34 And this thing became sin unto the house of Jeroboam, even to cut it off, and to destroy it from off the face of the earth

8And the man of God said vnto the king, If thou wilt giue mee halfe thine house, I will not goe in with thee, neither will I eat bread, nor drinke water in this place:

10So he went another way, and returned not by the way that hee came to Bethel.

11 Now there dwelt an old Prophet in Bethel, and his sonne came and told him all the workes that the man of God had done that day in Bethel: the words which hee had spoken vnto the king, them they tolde also to their father.

12And their father said vnto them, What way went he? for his sonnes had seene what way the man of God went, which came from Iudah.

13And hee saide vnto his sonnes, Saddle me the asse. So they sadled him the asse, and he rode thereon,

14And went after the man of God, and found him sitting vnder an oke; and he said vnto him, Art thou the man of God that camest from Iudah? And he said, I am.

15Then hee said vnto him, Come home with me, and eate bread.

16And he said, I may not returne with thee, nor goe in with thee: neither will I eat bread, nor drinke water with thee in this place.

17For it was said to mee by the word of the Lord, Thou shalt eate no bread, nor drinke water there, nor turne againe to go by the way that thou camest.

18He said vnto him, I am a prophet also as thou art, and an angel spake vnto me by the word of the Lord, saying, Bring him backe with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread, and drinke water: But he lied vnto him.

19So he went backe with him, and did eate bread in his house, and dranke water.

20 And it came to passe as they sate at the table, that the word of the Lord came vnto the prophet that brought him backe:

26And when the prophet that brought him back from the way, heard thereof, he said, It is the man of God, who was disobedient vnto the word of the Lord: therefore the Lord hath deliuered him vnto the lion, which hath torne him, and slaine him, according to the word of the Lord, which he spake vnto him.

27And he spake to his sonnes, saying, Saddle me the asse: and they sadled him.

28And he went and found his carcaise cast in the way, and the asse and the lyon standing by the carcaise: the lyon had not eaten the carcaise, nor torne the asse.

29And the prophet tooke vp the carcaise of the man of God, and laid it vpon the asse, and brought it backe: and the old prophet came to the city, to mourne, and to burie him.

30And hee laid his carcaise in his owne graue, and they mourned ouer him, saying, Alas my brother.

31And it came to passe after hee had buried him, that he spake to his sonnes, saying, When I am dead, then bury me in the sepulchre, wherein the man of God is buried, lay my bones beside his bones.

32For the saying which hee cried by the word of the Lord against the altar in Bethel, and against all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria, shall surely come to passe.

33 After this thing, Ieroboam returned not from his euill way, but made againe of the lowest of the people priests of the high places: whosoeuer would, he consecrated him, and he became one of the priests of the high places.

34And this thing became sinne vnto the house of Ieroboam, euen to cut it off, and to destroy it from off the face of the earth

1 A man of God came from Judah to Bethel by the word of the LORD, while Jeroboam was standing at the altar to offer sacrifice.

2 He cried out against the altar the word of the LORD: "O altar, altar, the LORD says, 'A child shall be born to the house of David, Josiah by name, who shall slaughter upon you the priests of the high places who offer sacrifice upon you, and he shall burn human bones upon you.'"

3 He gave a sign that same day and said: "This is the sign that the LORD has spoken: The altar shall break up and the ashes on it shall be strewn about.

4 When King Jeroboam heard what the man of God was crying out against the altar, he stretched forth his hand from the altar and said, "Seize him!" But the hand he stretched forth against him withered, so that he could not draw it back.

5 Moreover, the altar broke up and the ashes from it were strewn about - the sign the man of God had given as the word of the LORD.

6 Then the king appealed to the man of God. "Entreat the LORD, your God," he said, "and intercede for me that I may be able to withdraw my hand." So the man of God entreated the LORD, and the king recovered the normal use of his hand.

7 "Come home with me for some refreshment," the king invited the man of God, "and I will give you a present."

8 "If you gave me half your kingdom," the man of God said to the king, "I would not go with you, nor eat bread or drink water in this place.

9 structed by the word of the LORD not to eat bread or drink water and not to return by the way I came."

10 So he departed by another road and did not go back the way he had come to Bethel.

11 There was an old prophet living in the city, whose sons came and told him all that the man of God had done that day in Bethel. When they repeated to their father the words he had spoken to the king,

12 the father asked them, "Which way did he go?" And his sons pointed out to him the road taken by the man of God who had come from Judah.

13 Then he said to his sons, "Saddle the ass for me." When they had saddled it, he mounted

14 and followed the man of God, whom he found seated under a terebinth. When he asked him, "Are you the man of God who came from Judah?" he answered, "Yes."

15 Then he said, "Come home with me and have some bread."

16 "I cannot go back with you, and I cannot eat bread or drink water with you in this place," he answered,

17 "for I was told by the word of the LORD neither to eat bread nor drink water here, and not to go back the way I came."

18 But he said to him, "I, too, am a prophet like you, and an angel told me in the word of the LORD to bring you back with me to my house and to have you eat bread and drink water." He was lying to him, however.

19 So he went back with him, and ate bread and drank water in his house.

20 But while they were sitting at table, the LORD spoke to the prophet who had brought him back,

21 and he cried out to the man of God who had come from Judah: "The LORD says, 'Because you rebelled against the command of the LORD and did not keep the command which the LORD, your God, gave you,

22 but returned and ate bread and drank water in the place where he told you to do neither, your corpse shall not be brought to the grave of your ancestors.'"

23 After he had eaten bread and drunk water, the ass was saddled for him, and he again

24 set out. But a lion met him on the road, and killed him. His corpse lay sprawled on the road, and the ass remained standing by it, and so did the lion.

25 Some passers-by saw the body lying in the road, with the lion standing beside it, and carried the news to the city where the old prophet lived.

26 On hearing it, the prophet who had brought him back from his journey said: "It is the man of God who rebelled against the command of the LORD. He has delivered him to a lion, which mangled and killed him, as the LORD predicted to him."

27 Then he said to his sons, "Saddle the ass for me." When they had saddled it,

28 he went off and found the body lying in the road with the ass and the lion standing beside it. The lion had not eaten the body nor had it harmed the ass.

29 The prophet lifted up the body of the man of God and put it on the ass, and brought it back to the city to mourn over it and to bury it.

30 He laid the man's body in his own grave, and they mourned over it: "Alas, my brother!"

31 After he had buried him, he said to his sons, "When I die, bury me in the grave where the man of God is buried. Lay my remains beside his.

32 For the word of the LORD which he proclaimed against the altar in Bethel and against all the shrines on the high places in the cities of Samaria shall certainly come to pass."

33 Jeroboam did not give up his evil ways after this event, but again made priests for the high places from among the common people. Whoever desired it was consecrated and became a priest of the high places.

34 This was a sin on the part of the house of Jeroboam for which it was to be cut off and destroyed from the earth.

 

v 1-3. As Jeroboam prepared to burn incense, the man of God foretold 1 A child in David’s line named Josiah would be born; 2 He would offer false priests on the altar (fulfilled 2 Kings 23:15-20);  3 For a sign of proof, the altar would be torn down and the ashes poured out.

v 4-6. Jeroboam angrily reached out with a command to grab the man, but his hand became immediately paralyzed and the altar was split apart. At the Jeroboam’s request, the man of God called upon God and the king’s hand was restored.

v 7--10. The man of God rejected Jeroboam’s offer of any reward, and said God had told him not to even eat or drink in that place, and departed a different way.

v 11-19. An old prophet continued to live in this wicked Bethel, and whether from interest in him as a true, young prophet of God, or jealousy, he hastened to find the man of God, and asked him  to come eat with him, but got the same answer. The old prophet lied to him, v 18, that an angel had told him to bring him back for food and water, so the man of God did. We must remember Gal. 1:8,9, not to believe an angel or anyone but the word of God. Satan used that trick on Eve, “Hath God said?”

v 20-22. While they were eating the Lord told the old prophet to tell the man of God that he had disobeyed God, so his body would not return to his home sepulcher.

v 23-32. A divinely appointed lion killed the prophet, but merely stood by the body and the ass as others went by. When the old prophet heard the report, he knew it was the man of God,  because of his disobedience. He went after the body and buried it in his own tomb, grieving, partly because of his own responsibility for the death. He wanted to eventually be buried with him,  because he knew his prophecy was true.

v 33,34. After the paralyzed and healed hand and the broken altar, Jeroboam went right back into sin, and the kingdom offered him in 11:38 would be cut off instead.
