KING JAMES BIBLE

1 AND he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him.
2 And the Lord said unto Satan, The Lord rebuke thee, O Satan; even the Lord that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire?
3 Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and stood before the angel.
4 And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment.
5 And I said, Let them set a fair mitre upon his head. So they set a fair mitre upon his head, and clothed him with garments. And the angel of the Lord stood by.
6 And the angel of the Lord protested unto Joshua, saying,
7 Thus saith the Lord of hosts; If thou wilt walk in my ways, and if thou wilt keep my charge, then thou shalt also judge my house, and shalt also keep my courts, and I will give thee places to walk among these that stand by.
8 Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, thou, and thy fellows that sit before thee: for they are men wondered at: for, behold, I will bring forth my servant the BRANCH.
9 For behold the stone that I have laid before Joshua; upon one stone shall be seven eyes: behold, I will engrave the graving thereof, saith the Lord of hosts, and I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day.
10 In that day, saith the Lord of hosts, shall ye call every man his neighbour under the vine and under the fig tree.

1And he shewed me Ioshua the high Priest, standing before the Angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, while Satan stood at his right hand to accuse him.

2 And the angel of the LORD said to Satan, "May the LORD rebuke you, Satan; may the LORD who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is not this man a brand snatched from the fire?"

3 Now Joshua was standing before the angel, clad in filthy garments.

4 He spoke and said to those who were standing before him, "Take off his filthy garments, and clothe him in festal garments."

5 He also said, "Put a clean miter on his head." And they put a clean miter on his head and clothed him with the garments. Then the angel of the LORD, standing, said, "See, I have taken away your guilt."

6 The angel of the LORD then gave Joshua this assurance:

7 "Thus says the LORD of hosts: If you walk in my ways and heed my charge, you shall judge my house and keep my courts, and I will give you access among these standing here.

8 Listen, O Joshua, high priest! You and your associates who sit before you are men of good omen. Yes, I will bring my servant the Shoot.

9 Look at the stone that I have placed before Joshua, one stone with seven facets. I will engrave its inscription, says the LORD of hosts, and I will take away the guilt of the land in one day.

10 On that day, says the LORD of hosts, you will invite one another under your vines and fig trees."

COMMENTARIE

v 1,2. [4] Vision of Joshua the High Priest - The Lord’s servant, the Branch:
The next three visions shift from the valley to the courts of the temple in the city. The interpreting angel is gone and the participants are 1,Joshua the high priest; 2. the pre incarnate Christ; 3. Satan - accuser, Rev. 12:10; 4. attending angels; 5. Zechariah. Satan’s accusations against Joshua as representative of Israel were true, but Joshua, Jerusalem and Israel were under God’s choosing. Joshua and Israel was worthless as a brand from the fire, but the Lord retrieved them for His future purpose. Satan accuses us day and night, Rev. 12:10, but Christ makes intercession for us, Rom. 8:34.

v 3-5. As Satan had claimed, it was a polluted priesthood, so as Christ stood by, they removed Joshua’s filthy garments and put clean garments and turban on him. This indicated forgiveness and restoration of Israel as a priestly nation before God.

v 6,7. Pre incarnate Christ charged Joshua to walk in God’s ways and keep God’s requirements, he would 1. judge (or govern) my house; 2. Have charge of my courts (keep out idolatry and defilement); 3. Place among these others (Free access to God).

v 8. Joshua and the others were symbolic of things to come. The cleansing of the priesthood prefigured the cleansing of the nation of Israel. Joshua was symbolic of “my servant the Branch”, referring to Christ.  1. The branch of the Lord as Immanuel in Isa. 7:14;  2. The Branch of David as Messiah, seed of David, Isa. 11:1; 3. The Lord’s servant the Branch, as in Messiah’s humiliation and obedience unto death, Isa. 52:13-53:12; and   4. The man whose name is the Branch, as in the Son of man as last Adam and second man, 1 Cor. 15:45-47. These four are similar to other comparisons of Christ in the four Gospels. See my complete chart on notes of Rev. 4:7.
Matthew - Branch of David
Mark - The Lord’s Servant the Branch
Luke - Man whose name is the Branch
John - Branch of the Lord

v 9. Christ as “The Stone” will crush Gentile rule on earth, Dan. 2:44,45; the capstone which the builders rejected, Ps. 118:22, Matt. 21:42, 1 Pet. 2:6; a stumbling stone for unbelieving Israel. Removal of Israel’s sin in one day will probably be at the Second Advent. The seven eyes probably refer to the seven fold Holy Spirit, Isa. 11:2.

v 10. That day refers to the blessing of the entire Millennium.
