KING JAMES BIBLE

1 THEN I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a flying roll.
2 And he said unto me, What seest thou? And I answered, I see a flying roll; the length thereof is twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof ten cubits.
3 Then said he unto me, This is the curse that goeth forth over the face of the whole earth: for every one that stealeth shall be cut off as on this side according to it; and every one that sweareth shall be cut off as on that side according to it.
4 I will bring it forth, saith the Lord of hosts, and it shall enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him that sweareth falsely by my name: and it shall remain in the midst of his house, and shall consume it with the timber thereof and the stones thereof.
5 Then the angel that talked with me went forth, and said unto me, Lift up now thine eyes, and see what is this that goeth forth.
6 And I said, What is it? And he said, This is an ephah that goeth forth. He said moreover, This is their resemblance through all the earth.
7 And, behold, there was lifted up a talent of lead: and this is a woman that sitteth in the midst of the ephah.
8 And he said, This is wickedness. And he cast it into the midst of the ephah; and he cast the weight of lead upon the mouth thereof.
9 Then lifted I up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came out two women, and the wind was in their wings; for they had wings like the wings of a stork: and they lifted up the ephah between the earth and the heaven.
10 Then said I to the angel that talked with me, Whither do these bear the ephah?
11 And he said unto me, To build it an house in the land of Shinar: and it shall be established, and set there upon her own base.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 Then I raised my eyes again and saw a scroll flying.

2 "What do you see?" he asked me. I answered, "I see a scroll flying; it is twenty cubits long and ten cubits wide."

3 Then he said to me: "This is the curse which is to go forth over the whole earth; in accordance with it shall every thief be swept away, and in accordance with it shall every perjurer be expelled from here.

4 I will send it forth, says the LORD of hosts, and it shall come into the house of the thief, or into the house of him who perjures himself with my name; it shall lodge within his house, consuming it, timber and stones."

5 Then the angel who spoke with me came forward and said to me, "Raise your eyes and see what this is that comes forth."

6 "What is it?" I asked. And he answered, "This is a bushel container coming. This is their guilt in all the land."

7 Then a leaden cover was lifted, and there was a woman sitting inside the bushel.

8 "This is Wickedness," he said; and he thrust her inside the bushel, pushing the leaden cover into the opening.

9 Then I raised my eyes and saw two women coming forth with a wind ruffling their wings, for they had wings like the wings of a stork. As they lifted up the bushel into the air,

10 I said to the angel who spoke with me, "Where are they taking the bushel?"

11 He replied, "To build a temple for it in the land of Shinar; when the temple is ready, they will deposit it there in its place."

COMMENTARIE

v 1-4.  [5] Vision of the golden lamp stand and the two olive trees:
The interpreting angel returned and awakened Zechariah from sleep and called his attention to solid gold lamp stand with seven lamps similar to that in the temple. The gold refers to the deity of Christ and the seven lamps were for the seven fold Spirit of Isa. 11:2. This however had a bowl on top which had collection pipes to two olive trees and distribution pipes for oil to automatically fuel the seven lamps. Zechariah did not understand and asked the meaning of the two olive trees.

v 5-10. The angel evaded the question and related the vision to Zerubbabel the governor. He would build the temple by the power of the Spirit to remove obstacles. Zerubbabel had laid the foundation on the old foundation and would supervise all the construction and set the capstone at the finish, so all would know that the leaders had been sent by the Lord to do this job. For those who wept over the insignificance of this temple compared to Solomon’s, the Lord tells them not to despise small things, and again refers to the seven fold Spirit. (We should not shun small spiritual responsibility).

v 11-. Zechariah asks twice more what the two olive trees mean. After building up his suspense, the angel finally replied that they were the two anointed ones which stood before the Lord. The trees would seem to be Israel, but the two branches are Joshua and Zerubbabel representing Christ as king - priest, with Israel being a light to the nations. A later fulfillment of them is the two witnesses of the Tribulation, Rev. 11:4.
