1 THE burden of the word of the Lord in the land of Hadrach, and Damascus shall be the rest thereof: when the eyes of man, as of all the tribes of Israel, shall be toward the Lord.
2 And Hamath also shall border thereby; Tyrus, and Zidon, though it be very wise.
3 And Tyrus did build herself a strong hold, and heaped up silver as the dust, and fine gold as the mire of the streets.
4 Behold, the Lord will cast her out, and he will smite her power in the sea; and she shall be devoured with fire.
5 Ashkelon shall see it, and fear; Gaza also shall see it, and be very sorrowful, and Ekron; for her expectation shall be ashamed; and the king shall perish from Gaza, and Ashkelon shall not be inhabited.
6 And a bastard shall dwell in Ashdod, and I will cut off the pride of the Philistines.
7 And I will take away his blood out of his mouth, and his abominations from between his teeth: but he that remaineth, even he, shall be for our God, and he shall be as a governor in Judah, and Ekron as a Jebusite.
8 And I will encamp about mine house because of the army, because of him that passeth by, and because of him that returneth: and no oppressor shall pass through them any more: for now have I seen with mine eyes.
9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.
10 And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem, and the battle bow shall be cut off: and he shall speak peace unto the heathen: and his dominion shall be from sea even to sea, and from the river even to the ends of the earth.
11 As for thee also, by the blood of thy covenant I have sent forth thy prisoners out of the pit wherein is no water.
12 Turn you to the strong hold, ye prisoners of hope: even to day do I declare that I will render double unto thee;
13 When I have bent Judah for me, filled the bow with Ephraim, and raised up thy sons, O Zion, against thy sons, O Greece, and made thee as the sword of a mighty man.
14 And the Lord shall be seen over them, and his arrow shall go forth as the lightning: and the Lord God shall blow the trumpet, and shall go with whirlwinds of the south.
15 The Lord of hosts shall defend them; and they shall devour, and subdue with sling stones; and they shall drink, and make a noise as through wine; and they shall be filled like bowls, and as the corners of the altar.
16 And the Lord their God shall save them in that day as the flock of his people: for they shall be as the stones of a crown, lifted up as an ensign upon his land.
17 For how great is his goodness, and how great is his beauty! corn shall make the young men cheerful, and new wine the maids.

9 Reioyce greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout O daughter of Ierusalem: beholde, thy King commeth vnto thee: hee is iust, and hauing saluation, lowly, and riding vpon an asse, and vpon a colt, the foale of an asse.

10And I wil cut off the charet from Ephraim, and the horse from Ierusalem: and the battell bow shalbe cut off, and he shall speake peace vnto the heathen, and his dominion shalbe from sea euen to sea, and from the Riuer, euen to the ends of the earth.

11As for thee also, by the blood of thy Couenant, I haue sent foorth thy prisoners out of the pit, wherein is no water.

13When I haue bent Iudah for me, filled the bow with Ephraim, and raised vp thy sonnes O Zion, against thy sonnes, O Greece, and made thee as the sword of a mightie man.

14And the Lord shalbe seene ouer them, and his arrow shall goe forth as the lightning: and the Lord God shall blow the trumpet, and shall goe with whirlewinds of the South.

15The Lord of hostes shall defend them, and they shall deuoure, and subdue with sling stones, and they shal drinke and make a noise, as through wine, and they shall bee filled like bowles, and as the corners of the Altar.

16And the Lord their God shall saue them in that day as the flock of his people, for they shall be as the stones of a crowne lifted vp as an ensigne vpon his land.

1 An oracle: The word of the LORD is upon the land of Hadrach, and Damascus is its resting place, For the cities of Aram are the LORD'S, as are all the tribes of Israel,

2 Hamath also, on its border, Tyre too, and Sidon, however wise they be.

3 Tyre built herself a stronghold, and heaped up silver like dust, and gold like the mire of the streets.

4 Lo, the LORD will strip her of her possessions, and smite her power on the sea, and she shall be devoured by fire.

5 Ashkelon shall see it and be afraid; Gaza also: she shall be in great anguish; Ekron, too, for her hope shall come to nought. The king shall disappear from Gaza, and Ashkelon shall not be inhabited,

6 and the baseborn shall occupy Ashdod. I will destroy the pride of the Philistine

7 and take from his mouth his bloody meat, and his abominations from between his teeth: He also shall become a remnant for our God, and shall be like a family in Judah, and Ekron shall be like the Jebusites.

8 I will encamp by my house as a guard that none may pass to and fro; No oppressor shall pass over them again, for now I have regard for their affliction.

9 Rejoice heartily, O daughter Zion, shout for joy, O daughter Jerusalem! See, your king shall come to you; a just savior is he, Meek, and riding on an ass, on a colt, the foal of an ass.

10 He shall banish the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem; The warrior's bow shall be banished, and he shall proclaim peace to the nations. His dominion shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth.

11 As for you, for the blood of your covenant with me, I will bring forth your prisoners from the dungeon.

12 In the return to the fortress of the waiting prisoners, This very day, I will return you double for your exile.

13 For I will bend Judah as my bow, I will arm myself with Ephraim; I will arouse your sons, O Zion, (against your sons, O Yavan,) and I will use you as a warrior's sword.

14 The LORD shall appear over them, and his arrow shall shoot forth as lightning; The LORD God shall sound the trumpet, and come in a storm from the south.

15 The LORD of hosts shall be a shield over them, they shall overcome sling stones and trample them underfoot; They shall drink blood like wine, till they are filled with it like libation bowls, like the corners of the altar.

16 And the LORD, their God, shall save them on that day, his people, like a flock. For they are the jewels in a crown raised aloft over his land.

17 For what wealth is theirs, and what beauty! grain that makes the youths flourish, and new wine, the maidens!

v 1,2. This proclamation of judgment on cities surrounding Israel was fulfilled by Alexander the Great in his march down the coast, but it was recognized from the Lord.

 

v 3,4. Wealthy Tyre withstood Nebuchadnezzar 13 years, but Alexander captured it in 5 months when the Lord, in Ezekiel’s terms, sank her ship (of state) in the sea.

 

v 5-8. Many cities were smitten, but removal of idolatry and assimilation into Israel awaits fulfillment. Alexander bypassed Jerusalem several times because the Lord was protecting her (See 12:8), just as He will in the Millennium. Foreign nations had no more right there than a bastard to an inheritance. Remnant will even come from Ekron.

 

 

 

 

v 9. This speaks of Triumphal Entry of Messiah riding a donkey in peace, Mt. 21:2. Eastern kings rode a donkey in peace, otherwise they rode a war horse. 

v 10.  This looks forward to when Christ establishes peace in the Millennium.

 

v 11,12. Because of God’s covenant with Abraham or Moses, captive Israelites are prisoners of hope, for restoration to the land, and double blessed in Millennium.

 

v 13-17. When the Maccabees rose up against Antiochus Epiphanes and others, poetically, the Lord’s thunderstorm granted temporary victory over Greece with speed of arrow or lightning. The great thing that came out of Greek conquest between the Testaments was translation of the O. T. into the Greek language. The great deliverance will be in the Millennium when God cares for His people like a flock, and they will have the blessings of nature and of physical health.
