KING JAMES BIBLE

1 AND I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came four chariots out from between two mountains; and the mountains were mountains of brass.
2 In the first chariot were red horses; and in the second chariot black horses;
3 And in the third chariot white horses; and in the fourth chariot grisled and bay horses.
4 Then I answered and said unto the angel that talked with me, What are these, my lord?
5 And the angel answered and said unto me, These are the four spirits of the heavens, which go forth from standing before the Lord of all the earth.
6 The black horses which are therein go forth into the north country; and the white go forth after them; and the grisled go forth toward the south country.
7 And the bay went forth, and sought to go that they might walk to and fro through the earth: and he said, Get you hence, walk to and fro through the earth. So they walked to and fro through the earth.
8 Then cried he upon me, and spake unto me, saying, Behold, these that go toward the north country have quieted my spirit in the north country.
9 And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,
10 Take of them of the captivity, even of Heldai, of Tobijah, and of Jedaiah, which are come from Babylon, and come thou the same day, and go into the house of Josiah the son of Zephaniah;
11 Then take silver and gold, and make crowns, and set them upon the head of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest;
12 And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the Lord:
13 Even he shall build the temple of the Lord; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a priest upon his throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between them both.
14 And the crowns shall be to Helem, and to Tobijah, and to Jedaiah, and to Hen the son of Zephaniah, for a memorial in the temple of the Lord.
15 And they that are far off shall come and build in the temple of the Lord, and ye shall know that the Lord of hosts hath sent me unto you. And this shall come to pass, if ye will diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 Again I raised my eyes and saw four chariots coming out from between two mountains; and the mountains were of bronze.

2 The first chariot had red horses, the second chariot black horses,

3 the third chariot white horses, and the fourth chariot spotted horses - all of them strong horses.

4 I asked the angel who spoke with me, "What are these, my lord?"

5 The angel said to me in reply, "These are the four winds of the heavens, which are coming forth after being reviewed by the LORD of all the earth."

6 The chariot with the black horses was turning toward the land of the north, the red and the white horses went after them, and the spotted ones went toward the land of the south.

7 As these strong horses emerged, eager to set about patrolling the earth, he said, "Go, patrol the earth!" Then, as they patrolled the earth,

8 he called out to me and said, "See, they that go forth to the land of the north will make my spirit rest in the land of the north."

9 This word of the LORD then came to me:

10 Take from the returned captives Heldai, Tobijah, Jedaiah; and go the same day to the house of Josiah, son of Zephaniah (these had come from Babylon).

11 Silver and gold you shall take, and make a crown; place it on the head of (Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest) Zerubbabel.

12 And say to him: Thus says the LORD of hosts: Here is a man whose name is Shoot, and where he is he shall sprout, and he shall build the temple of the LORD.

13 Yes, he shall build the temple of the LORD, and taking up the royal insignia, he shall sit as ruler upon his throne. The priest shall be put at his right hand, and between the two of them there shall be friendly understanding.

14 The crown itself shall be a memorial offering in the temple of the LORD in favor of Heldai, Tobijah, Jedaiah, and the son of Zephaniah.

15 And they who are from afar shall come and build the temple of the LORD, and you shall know that the LORD of hosts has sent me to you. And if you heed carefully the voice of the LORD your God.

COMMENTARIE

v 1-3. [8] Vision of the four chariots:
In the first vision scouts were on horses in the myrtle trees. In this last one, horses pulling war chariots appear between two mountains of bronze to bring judgment. Black horses represent famine, red represent war, dappled and bay are pestilence and plagues, and white is for triumph and victory.

v 4-8. The interpreting angel explains that the horses are the four spirits, winds, from heaven which God sends from heaven throughout the world to do judgment. These are angels that go with chariot speed to do God’s bidding. These judgments came upon the north, Babylon and the south, Egypt, in few years, but  no doubt looks to world wide (the bay) in  the Tribulation and Millennial reign, as the white horse, victory follows. The Lord speaks and tells Zechariah that His spirit of wrath has searched the earth and He is satisfied with the judgment.

v 9-11. The night visions are ended and the Lord is speaking directly. These three men from have brought some silver and gold for temple use and are staying in the home of a Josiah. A two tiered crown is to be made from it and placed on Joshua.

v 12,13. He is to represent or typify the Branch, Christ, who will oversee building the Millennial Temple as Zerubbabel is overseeing this one. Joshua, a Levite, could not be king, but Christ will combine the offices of king and priest, just as Melchizedek was a King-Priest, Gen. 14:18-20; Heb. 7:11-21.

v 14. After the typical crowning of Joshua, the crown was to be given to the three from Babylon to be placed in the temple when it is completed.

v 15. The Lord of hosts, v 12 and 15, is still speaking, but as the Branch in this verse, “The Lord of hosts hath sent me to you”.  People will come from all over the world and bring wealth to build the Millennial temple, Isa. 60:5-9, 11; 61:6b; Hag. 2:7, 8
