1 Then the LORD said unto Moses, Go in unto Pharaoh, and tell him, Thus saith the LORD God of the Hebrews, Let my people go, that they may serve me.

2For if thou refuse to let them go, and wilt hold them still,

3Behold, the hand of the LORD is upon thy cattle which is in the field, upon the horses, upon the asses, upon the camels, upon the oxen, and upon the sheep: there shall be a very grievous murrain.

4And the LORD shall sever between the cattle of Israel and the cattle of Egypt: and there shall nothing die of all that is the children's of Israel.

5And the LORD appointed a set time, saying, To morrow the LORD shall do this thing in the land.

6And the LORD did that thing on the morrow, and all the cattle of Egypt died: but of the cattle of the children of Israel died not one.

7And Pharaoh sent, and, behold, there was not one of the cattle of the Israelites dead. And the heart of Pharaoh was hardened, and he did not let the people go.

8And the LORD said unto Moses and unto Aaron, Take to you handfuls of ashes of the furnace, and let Moses sprinkle it toward the heaven in the sight of Pharaoh.

9And it shall become small dust in all the land of Egypt, and shall be a boil breaking forth with blains upon man, and upon beast, throughout all the land of Egypt.

10And they took ashes of the furnace, and stood before Pharaoh; and Moses sprinkled it up toward heaven; and it became a boil breaking forth with blains upon man, and upon beast.

11And the magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils; for the boil was upon the magicians, and upon all the Egyptians.

12And the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh, and he hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had spoken unto Moses.

13And the LORD said unto Moses, Rise up early in the morning, and stand before Pharaoh, and say unto him, Thus saith the LORD God of the Hebrews, Let my people go, that they may serve me.

14For I will at this time send all my plagues upon thine heart, and upon thy servants, and upon thy people; that thou mayest know that there is none like me in all the earth.

15For now I will stretch out my hand, that I may smite thee and thy people with pestilence; and thou shalt be cut off from the earth.

16And in very deed for this cause have I raised thee up, for to shew inthee my power; and that my name may be declared throughout all the earth.

17As yet exaltest thou thyself against my people, that thou wilt not let them go?

18Behold, to morrow about this time I will cause it to rain a very grievous hail, such as hath not been in Egypt since the foundation thereof even until now.

19Send therefore now, and gather thy cattle, and all that thou hast in the field; for upon every man and beast which shall be found in the field, and shall not be brought home, the hail shall come down upon them, and they shall die.

20He that feared the word of the LORD among the servants of Pharaoh made his servants and his cattle flee into the houses:

21And he that regarded not the word of the LORD left his servants and his cattle in the field.

22And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch forth thine hand toward heaven, that there may be hail in all the land of Egypt, upon man, and upon beast, and upon every herb of the field, throughout the land of Egypt.

23And Moses stretched forth his rod toward heaven: and the LORD sent thunder and hail, and the fire ran along upon the ground; and the LORD rained hail upon the land of Egypt.

24So there was hail, and fire mingled with the hail, very grievous, such as there was none like it in all the land of Egypt since it became a nation.

25And the hail smote throughout all the land of Egypt all that was in the field, both man and beast; and the hail smote every herb of the field, and brake every tree of the field.

26Only in the land of Goshen, where the children of Israel were, was there no hail.

27And Pharaoh sent, and called for Moses and Aaron, and said unto them, I have sinned this time: the LORD is righteous, and I and my people are wicked.

28Intreat the LORD (for it is enough) that there be no more mighty thunderings and hail; and I will let you go, and ye shall stay no longer.

29And Moses said unto him, As soon as I am gone out of the city, I will spread abroad my hands unto the LORD; and the thunder shall cease, neither shall there be any more hail; that thou mayest know how that the earth is the LORD'S.

30But as for thee and thy servants, I know that ye will not yet fear the LORD God.

31And the flax and the barley was smitten: for the barley was in the ear, and the flax was bolled.

32But the wheat and the rie were not smitten: for they were not grown up.

33And Moses went out of the city from Pharaoh, and spread abroad his hands unto the LORD: and the thunders and hail ceased, and the rain was not poured upon the earth.

34And when Pharaoh saw that the rain and the hail and the thunders were ceased, he sinned yet more, and hardened his heart, he and his servants.

35And the heart of Pharaoh was hardened, neither would he let the children of Israel go; as the LORD had spoken by Moses.

25And the haile smote throughout all the land of Egypt, all that was in the field, both man and beast: and the haile smote euery herbe of the fielde, and brake euery tree of the field.

26Onely in the land of Goshen where the children of Israel were, was there no haile.

27 And Pharaoh sent, and called for Moses and Aaron, and said vnto them, I haue sinned this time: the Lord is righteous, and I and my people are wicked.

28Entreat the Lord, (for it is enough) that there be no more mighty thunderings and haile, and I will let you goe, and ye shall stay no longer.

29And Moses saide vnto him, Assoone as I am gone out of the citie, I will spread abroad my hands vnto the Lord, and the thunder shall cease, neither shall there be any more haile: that thou mayest know how that the earth is the Lords.

30But as for thee and thy seruants, I know that ye will not yet feare the Lord God.

31And the flaxe, and the barley was smitten: for the barley was in the eare, and the flaxe was bolled:

32But the wheat and the rye were not smitten: for they were not growen vp.

33And Moses went out of the city from Pharaoh, and spread abroad his hands vnto the Lord: and the thunders and haile ceased, and the raine was not powred vpon the earth.

34And when Pharaoh saw that the raine, and the haile and the thunders were ceased, hee sinned yet more, and hardened his heart, he and his seruants.

35And the heart of Pharaoh was hardened, neither would he let the children of Israel goe, as the Lord had spoken by Moses.

1 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go to Pharaoh and tell him: Thus says the LORD, the God of the Hebrews: Let my people go to worship me.

2 If you refuse to let them go and persist in holding them,

3 I warn you, the LORD will afflict all your livestock in the field - your horses, asses, camels, herds and flocks - with a very severe pestilence.

4 But the LORD will distinguish between the livestock of Israel and that of Egypt, so that none belonging to the Israelites will die."

5 And setting a definite time, the LORD added, "Tomorrow the LORD shall do this in the land."

6 And on the next day the LORD did so. All the livestock of the Egyptians died, but not one beast belonging to the Israelites.

7 But though Pharaoh's messengers informed him that not even one beast belonging to the Israelites had died, he still remained obdurate and would not let the people go.

8 Then the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, "Take a double handful of soot from a furnace, and in the presence of Pharaoh let Moses scatter it toward the sky.

9 It will then turn into fine dust over the whole land of Egypt and cause festering boils on man and beast throughout the land."

10 So they took soot from a furnace and stood in the presence of Pharaoh. Moses scattered it toward the sky, and it caused festering boils on man and beast.

11 The magicians could not stand in Moses' presence, for there were boils on the magicians no less than on the rest of the Egyptians.

12 But the LORD made Pharaoh obstinate, and he would not listen to them, just as the LORD had foretold to Moses.

13 Then the LORD told Moses, "Early tomorrow morning present yourself to Pharaoh and say to him: Thus says the LORD, the God of the Hebrews: Let my people go to worship me,

14 or this time I will hurl all my blows upon you and your servants and your subjects, that you may know that there is none like me anywhere on earth.

15 For by now I would have stretched out my hand and struck you and your subjects with such pestilence as would wipe you from the earth.

16 But this is why I have spared you: to show you my power and to make my name resound throughout the earth!

17 Will you still block the way for my people by refusing to let them go?

18 I warn you, then, tomorrow at this hour I will rain down such fierce hail as there has never been in Egypt from the day the nation was founded up to the present.

19 Therefore, order all your livestock and whatever else you have in the open fields to be brought to a place of safety. Whatever man or beast remains in the fields and is not brought to shelter shall die when the hail comes upon them."

20 Some of Pharaoh's servants feared the warning of the LORD and hurried their servants and livestock off to shelter.

21 Others, however, did not take the warning of the LORD to heart and left their servants and livestock in the fields.

22 The LORD then said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand toward the sky, that hail may fall upon the entire land of Egypt, on man and beast and every growing thing in the land of Egypt."

23 When Moses stretched out his staff toward the sky, the LORD sent forth hail and peals of thunder. Lightning flashed toward the earth, and the LORD rained down hail upon the land of Egypt;

24 and lightning constantly flashed through the hail, such fierce hail as had never been seen in the land since Egypt became a nation.

25 It struck down every man and beast that was in the open throughout the land of Egypt; it beat down every growing thing and splintered every tree in the fields.

26 Only in the land of Goshen, where the Israelites dwelt, was there no hail.

27 Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said to them, "I have sinned again! The LORD is just; it is I and my subjects who are at fault.

28 Pray to the LORD, for we have had enough of God's thunder and hail. Then I will let you go; you need stay no longer."

29 Moses replied, "As soon as I leave the city I will extend my hands to the LORD; the thunder will cease, and there will be no more hail. Thus you shall learn that the earth is the LORD'S.

30 But you and your servants, I know, do not yet fear the LORD God."

31 Now the flax and the barley were ruined, because the barley was in ear and the flax in bud.

32 But the wheat and the spelt were not ruined, for they grow later.

33 When Moses had left Pharaoh's presence and had gone out of the city, he extended his hands to the LORD. Then the thunder and the hail ceased, and the rain no longer poured down upon the earth.

23 But Pharaoh, seeing that the rain and hail and thunder had ceased, sinned again: he with his servants became obdurate,

35 and in his obstinacy he would not let the Israelites go, as the LORD had foretold through Moses.

v 1-5. This time Moses went in to the Palace with Pharaoh unbidden. With this command to let the people go, Moses warns that tomorrow a deadly disease will kill all the animals in the field, but the Israelite cattle will be exempt.

v 6,7. After the deaths, Pharaoh checked to see if Israel’s cattle had survived and they had. This probably infuriated him and he would not let the people go.

v 8-10. Probably Moses chose the morning spot by the river again to have Aaron release the soot and ashes before Pharaoh. This was without warning and boils burst forth on all Egyptians and livestock which had not been in the field and died.

v 11,12. This was probably the most painful of all the plagues, too painful for the magicians to remain, but Pharaoh in hardness of heart still refuses to listen to Moses’ demands.

v 13-18. Whether Moses stood before Pharaoh at the river or at the palace, he demanded release of the people and gave a pointed message from the Lord. God could have killed the Egyptian people and Pharaoh, but the Lord has preserved him so that His power could be seen and they would know that He is God and there is none other like Him. This would be an object lesson to the rest of the world. Since Pharaoh still refused he is warned there will be hail tomorrow like he hadn’t seen.

v 19-21. The Lord showed mercy by warning that every man and beast left in the field next morning would be killed by the hail. Those who had come to fear the Lord took their cattle and servants to shelter, but those who did not ignored the warning.

v 22-26. At Moses’ signal, the terrible hailstorm came, and lightning sent fire which ran along the ground. Here trees are broken down and every plant in the fields was destroyed.

v 27-30. Pharaoh finally sent for Moses and Aaron and admitted he had sinned “This time”, the Lord was right and he and his people were wrong. If Moses would stop the storm, he would let the people go. Moses said he would stop the storm at a specific time to show it was of the Lord, but he knew Pharaoh would still not let them go.

v 31-35. Of the Lord’s mercy, the timing was such that the wheat and rye, or spelt, would recover. However, after the storm ceased, Pharaoh refused again.  Verses 28 and 34 are a reminder that many promises made in time of trouble are later forgotten.
