Exodus 30

KING JAMES BIBLE

1 And thou shalt make an altar to burn incense upon: of shittim wood shalt thou make it.

2A cubit shall be the length thereof, and a cubit the breadth thereof; foursquare shall it be: and two cubits shall be the height thereof: the horns thereof shall be of the same.

3And thou shalt overlay it with pure gold, the top thereof, and the sides thereof round about, and the horns thereof; and thou shalt make unto it a crown of gold round about.

4And two golden rings shalt thou make to it under the crown of it, by the two corners thereof, upon the two sides of it shalt thou make it; and they shall be for places for the staves to bear it withal.

5And thou shalt make the staves of shittim wood, and overlay them with gold.

6And thou shalt put it before the vail that is by the ark of the testimony, before the mercy seat that is over the testimony, where I will meet with thee.

7And Aaron shall burn thereon sweet incense every morning: when he dresseth the lamps, he shall burn incense upon it.

8And when Aaron lighteth the lamps at even, he shall burn incense upon it, a perpetual incense before the LORD throughout your generations.

9Ye shall offer no strange incense thereon, nor burnt sacrifice, nor meat offering; neither shall ye pour drink offering thereon.

10And Aaron shall make an atonement upon the horns of it once in a year with the blood of the sin offering of atonements: once in the year shall he make atonement upon it throughout your generations: it is most holy unto the LORD.

11And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

12When thou takest the sum of the children of Israel after their number, then shall they give every man a ransom for his soul unto the LORD, when thou numberest them; that there be no plague among them, when thou numberest them.

13This they shall give, every one that passeth among them that are numbered, half a shekel after the shekel of the sanctuary: (a shekel is twenty gerahs:) an half shekel shall be the offering of the LORD.

14Every one that passeth among them that are numbered, from twenty years old and above, shall give an offering unto the LORD.

15The rich shall not give more, and the poor shall not give less than half a shekel, when they give an offering unto the LORD, to make an atonement for your souls.

16And thou shalt take the atonement money of the children of Israel, and shalt appoint it for the service of the tabernacle of the congregation; that it may be a memorial unto the children of Israel before the LORD, to make an atonement for your souls.

17And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

18Thou shalt also make a laver of brass, and his foot also of brass, to wash withal: and thou shalt put it between the tabernacle of the congregation and the altar, and thou shalt put water therein.

19For Aaron and his sons shall wash their hands and their feet thereat:

20When they go into the tabernacle of the congregation, they shall wash with water, that they die not; or when they come near to the altar to minister, to burn offering made by fire unto the LORD:

21So they shall wash their hands and their feet, that they die not: and it shall be a statute for ever to them, even to him and to his seed throughout their generations.

22 Moreover the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

23Take thou also unto thee principal spices, of pure myrrh five hundred shekels, and of sweet cinnamon half so much, even two hundred and fifty shekels, and of sweet calamus two hundred and fifty shekels,

24And of cassia five hundred shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, and of oil olive an hin:

25And thou shalt make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary: it shall be an holy anointing oil.

26And thou shalt anoint the tabernacle of the congregation therewith, and the ark of the testimony,.

27And the table and all his vessels, and the candlestick and his vessels, and the altar of incense,

28And the altar of burnt offering with all his vessels, and the laver and his foot.

29And thou shalt sanctify them, that they may be most holy: whatsoever toucheth them shall be holy.

30And thou shalt anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister unto me in the priest's office.

31And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, This shall be an holy anointing oil unto me throughout your generations.

32Upon man's flesh shall it not be poured, neither shall ye make any other like it, after the composition of it: it is holy, and it shall be holy unto you.

33Whosoever compoundeth any like it, or whosoever putteth any of it upon a stranger, shall even be cut off from his people.

34 And the LORD said unto Moses, Take unto thee sweet spices, stacte, and onycha, and galbanum; these sweet spices with pure frankincense: of each shall there be a like weight:

35And thou shalt make it a perfume, a confection after the art of the apothecary, tempered together, pure and holy:

36And thou shalt beat some of it very small, and put of it before the testimony in the tabernacle of the congregation, where I will meet with thee: it shall be unto you most holy.

37And as for the perfume which thou shalt make, ye shall not make to yourselves according to the composition thereof: it shall be unto thee holy for the LORD.

38 Whosoever shall make like unto that, to smell thereto, shall even be cut off from his people.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 "For burning incense you shall make an altar of acacia wood,

2 with a square surface, a cubit long, a cubit wide, and two cubits high, with horns that spring directly from it.

3 Its grate on top, its walls on all four sides, and its horns you shall plate with pure gold. Put a gold molding around it.

4 Underneath the molding you shall put gold rings, two on one side and two on the opposite side, as holders for the poles used in carrying it.

5 Make the poles, too, of acacia wood and plate them with gold.

6 This altar you are to place in front of the veil that hangs before the ark of the commandments where I will meet you.

7 "On it Aaron shall burn fragrant incense. Morning after morning, when he prepares the lamps,

8 and again in the evening twilight, when he lights the lamps, he shall burn incense. Throughout your generations this shall be the established incense offering before the LORD.

9 On this altar you shall not offer up any profane incense, or any holocaust or cereal offering; nor shall you pour out a libation upon it.

10 Once a year Aaron shall perform the atonement rite on its horns. Throughout your generations this atonement is to be made once a year with the blood of the atoning sin offering. This altar is most sacred to the LORD."

11 The LORD also said to Moses,

12 "When you take a census of the Israelites who are to be registered, each one, as he is enrolled, shall give the LORD a forfeit for his life, so that no plague may come upon them for being registered.

13 Everyone who enters the registered group must pay a half-shekel, according to the standard of the sanctuary shekel, twenty gerahs to the shekel. This payment of a half-shekel is a contribution to the LORD.

14 Everyone of twenty years or more who enters the registered group must give this contribution to the LORD.

15 The rich need not give more, nor shall the poor give less, than a half-shekel in this contribution to the LORD to pay the forfeit for their lives.

16 When you receive this forfeit money from the Israelites, you shall donate it to the service of the meeting tent, that there it may be the Israelites' reminder before the LORD, of the forfeit paid for their lives."

17 The LORD said to Moses,

18 "For ablutions you shall make a bronze laver with a bronze base. Place it between the meeting tent and the altar, and put water in it.

19 Aaron and his sons shall use it in washing their hands and feet.

20 When they are about to enter the meeting tent, they must wash with water, lest they die. Likewise when they approach the altar in their ministry, to offer an oblation to the LORD,

21 they must wash their hands and feet, lest they die. This shall be a perpetual ordinance for him and his descendants throughout their generations."

22 The LORD said to Moses,

23 "Take the finest spices: five hundred shekels of free-flowing myrrh; half that amount, that is, two hundred and fifty shekels, of fragrant cinnamon; two hundred and fifty shekels of fragrant cane;

24 five hundred shekels of cassia-all according to the standard of the sanctuary shekel; together with a hin of olive oil;

25 and blend them into sacred anointing oil, perfumed ointment expertly prepared.

26 With this sacred anointing oil you shall anoint the meeting tent and the ark of the commandments,

27 the table and all its appurtenances, the lampstand and its appurtenances, the altar of incense

28 and the altar of holocausts with all its appurtenances, and the laver with its base.

29 When you have consecrated them, they shall be most sacred; whatever touches them shall be sacred.

30 Aaron and his sons you shall also anoint and consecrate as my priests.

31 To the Israelites you shall say: As sacred anointing oil this shall belong to me throughout your generations.

32 It may not be used in any ordinary anointing of the body, nor may you make any other oil of a like mixture. It is sacred, and shall be treated as sacred by you.

33 Whoever prepares a perfume like this, or whoever puts any of this on a layman, shall be cut off from his kinsmen."

34 The LORD told Moses, "Take these aromatic substances: storax and onycha and galbanum, these and pure frankincense in equal parts;

35 and blend them into incense. This fragrant powder, expertly prepared, is to be salted and so kept pure and sacred.

36 Grind some of it into fine dust and put this before the commandments in the meeting tent where I will meet you. This incense shall be treated as most sacred by you.

37 You may not make incense of a like mixture for yourselves; you must treat it as sacred to the LORD.

38 Whoever makes an incense like this for his own enjoyment of its fragrance, shall be cut off from his kinsmen."

COMMENTARIE

v 1-6. The altar of incense is described here instead of with the other furniture earlier because of the worship service that was to be performed in connection with it. It was made of wood overlaid with gold and was a type of Chris, our intercessor, through whom our prayers ascend to God, just as that sweet fragrance ascends and is pleasing to God. It is just outside the veil that separates from the ark of the covenant in the Most Holy Place. That is where God would be dwelling, and just as we can not see Him, the prayers would go to Him. AN ALTAR TO BURN INCENSE: This burning of incense was an emblem of prayer, ascending to God from an inflamed heart. Ps. 140. 2.

v 7-10. About half a pound of incense was burned each morning and evening. The light was to be kept burning continuously, but each morning and evening the wicks would be individually trimmed and re-lighted. It represents our paryers, and we should pray without ceasing, 1Thes. 5:17. (Or, Josephus says only three left burning in daytime.) They were to offer only the incense and no other incense on the incense altar except that which the Lord prescribed, v 34-38, and no other fire than that which He commanded. (Kindled on the brazen altar) Lev. 10:1. Annually Aaron was to make blood atonement on it before entering the Most Holy.

v 11-16. Paying this ransom protected the men from a plague which took many in 2 Sam. 24:15, because David had done contrary to God in ordering the numbering. Each male 20 years and older was to give one half shekel weight of silver (less than a dollar). It was atonement for them, so rich and poor gave alike. This typifies Christ’s atonement, the same for rich and poor. The foundation sockets of the court fence were made from this silver, showing we can’t come into God’s presence without redemption.

HALF A SICLE: According to the standard or weight of the sanctuary, A sicle or shekel of silver, (which was also called a stater,) which was the most just and exact, was half an ounce of silver, that is, about half a crown of English money. The obol, or gerah, was about three halfpence.

v 17-21. Laver is a basin. Foot can mean base or well. It was the well or trough under the laver to catch the water after it ran over their hands or feet from the laver. No spigots are mentioned, but they are an obvious necessity, because if they had washed any thing even one time in the laver, it would have been polluted. It is still the practice in many of the oriental lands to wash hands by pouring over them. It was placed between the altar of sacrifice and the tabernacle and if the priest failed to wash, he would die, as an indication that we must be cleansed before we come into the presence of God. The laver was made from the brass mirrors of the women, and so was reflective. This pictures that we are to examine ourselves, 1 Cor. 11:28, confess sins 1 Jn. 1:9, & be cleansed by the washing of water by the Word, Eph. 5:26. No size was given for the laver or it’s contents, showing God gives unlimited cleansing.

v 22-33. The holy anointing oil was about 12 1/2 pounds of myrrh, 6 1/4 pound of cinnamon, 6 1/4 pounds of cane, 12 1/2 pounds of cassia (a fragrant tree bark), and almost 6 quarts of olive oil, making a fragrant blend. It was to anoint the tabernacle, the ark of testimony, the table and it’s utensils, the lamp stand and it’s utensils, the altar of incense, the altar of burnt offering and it’s utensils, the laver and it’s foot, as well as Aaron and his sons. It was holy because declared it holy, to be a type of the Holy Spirit, and if anyone used it or made any like it, he was to be cut off, apparently death.

v 34-38. This special perfume was equal parts of Astarte (gum of the storax tree, a sweet spice), onycha (lid of a shell mollusk which made perfume when burned), galbanum (a fragrant white gum from a tree in S. Arabia) and frankincense ( a yellow, aromatic gum from under the bark of a tree in Arabia). The mixture was to be seasoned with salt and beaten small before use on the altar of incense. Anyone using it for personal use would be cut off, apparently death.
