Exodus 16

It was noted that about one month out, the hardships of the wilderness life began to affect their dispositions. Their eyes on the fleshpots of Egypt, knowing almost what would be happening the next day and the next. Their eyes weren't on the Promised Land and the unknown. Manna used for bread tasting was a small round flake, like wafter made with honey After it fell with the dew each night, looked like coriander seed, they was allowed to have an omer (7 pints) daily. On the 6th day enough fell to have enough to last over the Sabbath. They ground it or beat in mortars, and after boiling it in pots make cakes out of it. After about an month in the wilderness it began and was given 6 days a week throughout the 40 years until they crossed the Jordan, where it stopped as suddenly as it began. Num 11:6-9 ; Joshua 5:12 Jesus regarded Manna as a shadow of himself. John 6:11-58
Triangular in shape, the Peninsula of Sinai is situated between two arms of the Red Sea. The North border line about 150 miles, the west shore about 180 miles, the east shore about 130. The north par of the peninsula is desert with the south part a great cluster of rugged chaotic mountains. The region was named after the Babylonian moon god, Sin. At the time it was know for its mines of copper, iron, ochre and precious stones. The kings of the East had made a road around the north and west fringes of the Arabian Desert to the Sinai region long before the days of Abraham.
Located toward the south point of the Peninsula is Mount Sinai, where Israel received the Law. Rising abruptly from the plan in awful grandeur it is an isolated mass of rock. Where Israel could have encamped an area on the northwest side is a plain 2 miles long 1/2 mile wide. In the valley of the Caves 40 miles to the northwest of Mt. Sinai there is a sculpture 400 feet above the mines which King Semerkhet, of the 1st Dynasty of Egyptian Pharaohs slaying the king of Sinai had made of himself. Of later kings there are 250 inscriptions. 10 miles north of the valley of the Caves is Serabit-el-Khadem, is the Oldest Known Alphabetic writing founded by Sir Flinder Petrie.
In Egypt their flesh food had been mostly fish. The people had great heads of cattle Exod 12:18 but did not want to live on them as food. Quails were sent, as Manna was, but not continuously only twice, here and a year later after Israel had left Mt Sinai. Num 11:31-34
KING JAMES BIBLE

1 And they took their journey from Elim, and all the congregation of the children of Israel came unto the wilderness of Sin, which isbetween Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their departing out of the land of Egypt.

2And the whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness:

3And the children of Israel said unto them, Would to God we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh pots, and when we did eat bread to the full; for ye have brought us forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger.

4Then said the LORD unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no.

5And it shall come to pass, that on the sixth day they shall prepare that which they bring in; and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily.

6And Moses and Aaron said unto all the children of Israel, At even, then ye shall know that the LORD hath brought you out from the land of Egypt:

7And in the morning, then ye shall see the glory of the LORD; for that he heareth your murmurings against the LORD: and what are we, that ye murmur against us?

8And Moses said, This shall be, when the LORD shall give you in the evening flesh to eat, and in the morning bread to the full; for that the LORD heareth your murmurings which ye murmur against him: and what are we? your murmurings are not against us, but against the LORD.

9And Moses spake unto Aaron, Say unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, Come near before the LORD: for he hath heard your murmurings.

10And it came to pass, as Aaron spake unto the whole congregation of the children of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and, behold, the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud.

11And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

12I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel: speak unto them, saying, At even ye shall eat flesh, and in the morning ye shall be filled with bread; and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God.

13And it came to pass, that at even the quails came up, and covered the camp: and in the morning the dew lay round about the host.

14And when the dew that lay was gone up, behold, upon the face of the wilderness there lay a small round thing, as small as the hoar frost on the ground.

15And when the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another, It ismanna: for they wist not what it was. And Moses said unto them, This is the bread which the LORD hath given you to eat.

16This is the thing which the LORD hath commanded, Gather of it every man according to his eating, an omer for every man, according to the number of your persons; take ye every man for them which are in his tents.

17And the children of Israel did so, and gathered, some more, some less.

18And when they did mete it with an omer, he that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack; they gathered every man according to his eating.

19And Moses said, Let no man leave of it till the morning.

20Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto Moses; but some of them left of it until the morning, and it bred worms, and stank: and Moses was wroth with them.

21And they gathered it every morning, every man according to his eating: and when the sun waxed hot, it melted.

22And it came to pass, that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for one man: and all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses.

23And he said unto them, This is that which the LORD hath said, To morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the LORD: bake thatwhich ye will bake to day, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning.

24And they laid it up till the morning, as Moses bade: and it did not stink, neither was there any worm therein.

25And Moses said, Eat that to day; for to day is a sabbath unto the LORD: to day ye shall not find it in the field.

26Six days ye shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is the sabbath, in it there shall be none.

27And it came to pass, that there went out some of the people on the seventh day for to gather, and they found none.

28And the LORD said unto Moses, How long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws?

29See, for that the LORD hath given you the sabbath, therefore he giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.

30So the people rested on the seventh day.

31And the house of Israel called the name thereof Manna: and it waslike coriander seed, white; and the taste of it was like wafers madewith honey.

32And Moses said, This is the thing which the LORD commandeth, Fill an omer of it to be kept for your generations; that they may see the bread wherewith I have fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you forth from the land of Egypt.

33And Moses said unto Aaron, Take a pot, and put an omer full of manna therein, and lay it up before the LORD, to be kept for your generations.

34As the LORD commanded Moses, so Aaron laid it up before the Testimony, to be kept.

35And the children of Israel did eat manna forty years, until they came to a land inhabited; they did eat manna, until they came unto the borders of the land of Canaan.

36Now an omer is the tenth part of an ephah.

17And the children of Israel did so, and gathered some more, some lesse.

18And when they did mete it with an Omer, he that gathered much, had nothing ouer, and he that gathered litle, had no lacke: they gathered euery man according to his eating.

19And Moses saide, Let no man leaue of it till the morning.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 Having set out from Elim, the whole Israelite community came into the desert of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their departure from the land of Egypt.

2 Here in the desert the whole Israelite community grumbled against Moses and Aaron.

3 The Israelites said to them, "Would that we had died at the LORD'S hand in the land of Egypt, as we sat by our fleshpots and ate our fill of bread! But you had to lead us into this desert to make the whole community die of famine!"

4 Then the LORD said to Moses, "I will now rain down bread from heaven for you. Each day the people are to go out and gather their daily portion; thus will I test them, to see whether they follow my instructions or not.

5 On the sixth day, however, when they prepare what they bring in, let it be twice as much as they gather on the other days."

6 So Moses and Aaron told all the Israelites, "At evening you will know that it was the LORD who brought you out of the land of Egypt;

7 and in the morning you will see the glory of the LORD, as he heeds your grumbling against him. But what are we that you should grumble against us?

8 When the LORD gives you flesh to eat in the evening," continued Moses, "and in the morning your fill of bread, as he heeds the grumbling you utter against him, what then are we? Your grumbling is not against us, but against the LORD."

9 Then Moses said to Aaron, "Tell the whole Israelite community: Present yourselves before the LORD, for he has heard your grumbling."

10 When Aaron announced this to the whole Israelite community, they turned toward the desert, and lo, the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud!

11 The LORD spoke to Moses and said,

12 "I have heard the grumbling of the Israelites. Tell them: In the evening twilight you shall eat flesh, and in the morning you shall have your fill of bread, so that you may know that I, the LORD, am your God."

13 In the evening quail came up and covered the camp. In the morning a dew lay all about the camp,

14 and when the dew evaporated, there on the surface of the desert were fine flakes like hoarfrost on the ground.

15 On seeing it, the Israelites asked one another, "What is this?" for they did not know what it was. But Moses told them, "This is the bread which the LORD has given you to eat.

16 "Now, this is what the LORD has commanded. So gather it that everyone has enough to eat, an omer for each person, as many of you as there are, each man providing for those of his own tent."

17 The Israelites did so. Some gathered a large and some a small amount.

18 But when they measured it out by the omer, he who had gathered a large amount did not have too much, and he who had gathered a small amount did not have too little. They so gathered that everyone had enough to eat.

19 Moses also told them, "Let no one keep any of it over until tomorrow morning."

20 But they would not listen to him. When some kept a part of it over until the following morning, it became wormy and rotten. Therefore Moses was displeased with them.

21 Morning after morning they gathered it, till each had enough to eat; but when the sun grew hot, the manna melted away.

22 On the sixth day they gathered twice as much food, two omers for each person. When all the leaders of the community came and reported this to Moses,

23 he told them, "That is what the LORD prescribed. Tomorrow is a day of complete rest, the sabbath, sacred to the LORD. You may either bake or boil the manna, as you please; but whatever is left put away and keep for the morrow."

24 When they put it away for the morrow, as Moses commanded, it did not become rotten or wormy.

25 Moses then said, "Eat it today, for today is the sabbath of the LORD. On this day you will not find any of it on the ground.

26 On the other six days you can gather it, but on the seventh day, the sabbath, none of it will be there."

27 Still, on the seventh day some of the people went out to gather it, although they did not find any.

28 Then the LORD said to Moses, "How long will you refuse to keep my commandments and laws?

29 Take note! The LORD has given you the sabbath. That is why on the sixth day he gives you food for two days. On the seventh day everyone is to stay home and no one is to go out."

30 After that the people rested on the seventh day.

31 The Israelites called this food manna. It was like coriander seed, but white, and it tasted like wafers made with honey.

32 Moses said, "This is what the LORD has commanded. Keep an omerful of manna for your descendants, that they may see what food I gave you to eat in the desert when I brought you out of the land of Egypt."

33 Moses then told Aaron, "Take an urn and put an omer of manna in it. Then place it before the LORD in safekeeping for your descendants."

34 So Aaron placed it in front of the commandments for safekeeping, as the LORD had commanded Moses.

35 The Israelites ate this manna for forty years, until they came to settled land; they ate manna until they reached the borders of Canaan.

36 (An omer is one tenth of an ephah.)

COMMENTARIE

J v 1-3. Maps place the wilderness of Sin south of the wilderness of Shur, but is incorrectly identified, because Isrealites are in Saudi Arabia. They have been traveling for a month and are well on the way to Sinai. Food supplies brought with them are exhausted and the people are blaming Moses and Aaron. They remember Egypt’s food, but not it’s severe oppression. They have lost their sense of values, as many people have today.

v 4-8. The Lord informs Moses that He will rain bread from heaven, and He will test the people by how much they gather daily. The Lord promises meat that evening and bread in the morning. Though the people complained to Moses and Aaron, The Lord had brought them out of Egypt, and their complaints were to God.

v 9,10. Since their complaint was really to the Lord, they are all commanded to all to gather before the Lord, and he appeared in glory in the cloud.

v 11,13. They saw the brightness, but the Lord spoke only to Moses, and he was to relay the message to the people. It was more definite than the earlier message, in the evening they would have meat, and before the next evening, abundance of bread. As proof that God is the Lord, that evening quails covered the camp, next morning dew. Quails do migrate there exhausted like that, but the timing was a miracle of the Lord.

v 14-16. When the dew was gone, in it’s place the ground was covered with fine round flaky things like frost. The people called it manna, because they didn’t know what it was, but Moses told them this was the bread from the Lord and they were to gather it according to the size of their families, an omer or 5.1 pints per person daily. One could not eat enough one day to last a week, and we should not try to live all week on the spiritual food we get in the house of the Lord on Sunday.

v 17-21. This proved to be the right amount per family and they were to gather daily. Some held it overnight, but it spoiled and got wormy, and Moses was angry at their disobedience. They had to get it early, as soon as the sun got hot it melted.

v 22-26. They gathered two omers per person on the sixth day and the rulers came to Moses with concern. He told them that was all right, because the next day would be the sabbath of rest unto the Lord. They were to prepare it how they chose on the sixth day, because it would not be found in the field on the seventh day.
Accordingt to verse 1, this is a month after leaving Egypt. Verses 23 and 29 speak of the Sabbath rest, This is the firt mention of the Sabbath, but the principal was laid down when God rested in Genesis. It may have been apparent but unnamed when Noah was still in the ark and later. The law for keeping the Sabbath was not given until the ten commandments were given in Exodus 20:8.. That was in the third month. Ex. 19:1 says they entered the wilderness of Sinai in the third month, was at least three days later when the law was given orally by God.

v 27-31. Some disobedient people still went out on the seventh day, but they found none and were rebuked by Moses. They were to rest the seventh day. Manna is further described like coriander seed, small, spicy, gray - white, and the taste of wafers made with honey and like fresh oil, Num. 11:7,8. Early Jews say the small pieces looked like pearls.

v 32-34. The Lord commanded Moses and he told Aaron to put an omer of manna in a pot and lay it up (later, Ex 25:16) in the ark of the covenant, or testimony. This was so future generations could see what God fed them when they left Egypt. Since it was in the ark of the covenant, I don’t know how any one ever saw it.

v 35,36. Manna is what they ate for forty years until they came into the promised land. At Gilgal in the plains of Jericho on the second day after the passover, the manna ceased, Josh. 5:10-12.
Manna is a gift from God to Israel Christ is God’s gift to mankind, Jn. 3:16
It sustained life temporarily He imparts life permanently
Both were: Unimpressive in appearance; From heaven; Individually received; Must stoop humbly to get it; Available to all; Pleasant to take; Pure; Partaken by faith.
