Exodus 35

Moses went up the mountain alone in Ex. 19:3 - Down between 19:6 and 7. God proposed the law and would make Israel a peculiar people. Up alone between 19:8 and 9 - Down 19:14.
Told to sanctify the people, set bounds about the mount, be ready for Lord day 3.
Up alone 19:20 - Down 19:25. Told to warn the people to stay off mount, and to bring Aaron next time.
Moses drew near but not up without Aaron 20:21 - Returned to the people 24:3.
Gave instructions about laws, Sabbath, 3 national feasts and conquest of land.
Up with Aaron, Nadab, Abihu, 70 elders, (Joshua & Hur v 13,14) - Down 32:15
Joshua went higher with Moses and the others were to wait, v 14, but didn’t. They went back and made golden calf while Moses received stone tables and instructions for priests garments and for building the tabernacle after a pattern shown him. Gone 40 days and nights alone plus 6 with all of them.
Moses went up alone 32:31 - Down between 33:3 and 4.
He interceded for the people and was told to prepare to journey. This was another 40 days and nights, Deut. 9:18. While he was down the Lord put him in a cleft of the rock and passed before him, 33:18-23.
Up alone 34:4 - Down 34:29. God renewed the commission, again enjoined feasts and Sabbath, and wrote the commandments on stones Moses brought. Moses face shone from being with God.
FENCE COURT: The court was fence in and consisted of 150 feet long,75 feet wide facing he east surrounding the Tabernacle. with the gate in the east and was 30 feet wide made of linen and scarlet. Hanging on the fence was fine twined linen 7-1/2 feet high on pillars of brass 7-1/2 feet apart with fillets and hooks of silver, set in sockets of brass.
ALTAR OF INCENSE: Made of Acacia wood overlaid with pure gold it was 3 feet wide, and 1-1/2 feet square. Incense was to be burned thereon, morning and evening in front of the veil. Exod 30:5 It was signifying perpetual prayer. Rev 8:3-5
THE CANDLE STICKS: A central shaft that holds a candle with 3 branches on each side made of pure gold for a total of 7 candles. Trimmed, fed with olive oil and lighted daily Exod 30:7, 8 It was thought of been about 5 feet tall and 3-1/2 feet across the top. Of Solomon's Temple, his candlesticks were patterned after this and would of no doubt been among the treasures taken to Babylon before being returned. Ezek 1:7 In Herod's temple the candlesticks in Jesus' day may have been one of these. In A.D. 70 It was taken to Rome, sculptured on the Arch of Titus and then respectfully deposited of in, A.D. 533 the Christian Church at Jerusalem. Though Revelation 1:12, 20 Candlesticks represent churches and the candlestick may of been a shadow of God's Word.
TABLE OF SHOWBREAD: The table was made of acacia wood, overlaid with pure gold. It was 3 feet long 1-1/2 feet wide, and 2-1/4 high. Replaced each Sabbath with new loaves it would hold 12 loaves of bread. A symbol of gratitude to God for daily bread was on the north side of the Holy place Luke 11:3
LAVER: To hold water, a great brass bowl for priests to wash their hands and feet before ministering at the Alar or in a tent. It was a shadow of cleansing by the blood of Christ. Signified cleanliness, literally and from Sin.
ATAR OF BURNT OFFERING: The sacrifice of animals was the Great Altar that was 7-1/2 feet square 4-1/2 feet high. Acacia boards were used to built it that was covered with brass hollow to filled with dirt. About halfway a ledge around it for priests to stand on. Near the entrance to the court, it stood east of the tabernacle. The fire never went out because it was miraculously kindled Lev 9:24 ; 6:9 A shadow of the death of Christ. A symbol that man except as s sinner atoned for by blood has no access to God.
THE ARK: It contained a pot of manna, Aaron's rod and two tables of the Ten Commandments. The chest was made of Acacia wood overlaid with pure gold. It was 3-3/4 feet long 2-1/4 feet wide, 2-1/4 feet high. On top of the Ark was the Mercy Seat. A lid of solid gold. A Cherub at each end of one piece with the lid facing each other. Their wings spread out looking down toward the Mercy Seat. The Mercy Seat was located just above the two tables of the Ten Commandments represented the meeting place of Mercy and Law, thus a shadow of Christ. Peter may of had in mind when he said "which things the Angels desire to look into" 1st Peter 1:12 The Cherubs presented a very vivid picture of the Internet of Heavenly Beings in Human Redemption. The Ark was believed to have been lost in the Babylonian Captivity. John saw the Ark in the Temple in Rev 11:19
THE HOLY PLACE: East 30 feet of the tabernacle. It contained the table of Shere bread, on the North side the Candlesticks on the North side, the altar of Incense just before the veil.
THE VEIL: Made of the finest linen, purple, blue, and scarlet, exquisitely embroidered with Cherubs. It separated the Most Holy from the Holy Room. At Christ death the Veil was rent in twain Matt 27:5 Another Veil was called the Screen, for the entrance at the east end of the tabernacle, made of fine linen, purple, blue and scarlet.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 Moses assembled the whole Israelite community and said to them, "This is what the LORD has commanded to be done.

2 On six days work may be done, but the seventh day shall be sacred to you as the sabbath of complete rest to the LORD. Anyone who does work on that day shall be put to death.

3 You shall not even light a fire in any of your dwellings on the sabbath day."

4 Moses told the whole Israelite community, "This is what the LORD has commanded:

5 Take up among you a collection for the LORD. Everyone, as his heart prompts him, shall bring, as a contribution to the LORD, gold, silver and bronze;

6 violet, purple and scarlet yarn; fine linen and goat hair;

7 rams' skins dyed red, and tahash skins; acacia wood;

8 oil for the light; spices for the anointing oil and for the fragrant incense;

9 onyx stones and other gems for mounting on the ephod and on the breastpiece.

10 "Let every expert among you come and make all that the LORD has commanded: the Dwelling,

11 with its tent, its covering, its clasps, its boards, its bars, its columns and its pedestals;

12 the ark, with its poles, the propitiatory, and the curtain veil;

13 the table, with its poles and all its appurtenances, and the showbread;

14 the lampstand, with its appurtenances, the lamps, and the oil for the light;

15 the altar of incense, with its poles; the anointing oil, and the fragrant incense; the entrance curtain for the entrance of the Dwelling;

16 the altar of holocausts, with its bronze grating, its poles, and all its appurtenances; the laver, with its base;

17 the hangings of the court, with their columns and pedestals; the curtain for the entrance of the court;

18 the tent pegs for the Dwelling and for the court, with their ropes;

19 the service cloths for use in the sanctuary; the sacred vestments for Aaron, the priest, and the vestments worn by his sons in their ministry."

20 When the whole Israelite community left Moses' presence,

21 everyone, as his heart suggested and his spirit prompted, brought a contribution to the LORD for the construction of the meeting tent, for all its services, and for the sacred vestments.

22 Both the men and the women, all as their heart prompted them, brought brooches, earrings, rings, necklaces and various other gold articles. Everyone who could presented an offering of gold to the LORD.

23 Everyone who happened to have violet, purple or scarlet yarn, fine linen or goat hair, rams' skins dyed red or tahash skins, brought them.

24 Whoever could make a contribution of silver or bronze offered it to the LORD; and everyone who happened to have acacia wood for any part of the work, brought it.

25 All the women who were expert spinners brought hand-spun violet, purple and scarlet yarn and fine linen thread.

26 All the women who possessed the skill, spun goat hair.

27 The princes brought onyx stones and other gems for mounting on the ephod and on the breastpiece;

28 as well as spices, and oil for the light, anointing oil, and fragrant incense.

29 Every Israelite man and woman brought to the LORD such voluntary offerings as they thought best, for the various kinds of work which the LORD had commanded Moses to have done.

30 Moses said to the Israelites, "See, the LORD has chosen Bezalel, son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah,

31 and has filled him with a divine spirit of skill and understanding and knowledge in every craft:

32 in the production of embroidery, in making things of gold, silver or bronze,

33 in cutting and mounting precious stones, in carving wood, and in every other craft.

34 He has also given both him and Oholiab, son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, the ability to teach others.

35 He has endowed them with skill to execute all types of work: engraving, embroidering, the making of variegated cloth of violet, purple and scarlet yarn and fine linen thread, weaving, and all other arts and crafts.

COMMENTARIE

v 1-3. The Sabbath was the sign of the covenant which the people had recently disobeyed. No matter how busy they were in preparing the tabernacle, they were not even to gather sticks on the Sabbath or face death. We must not get so busy in “serving” the Lord that we actually neglect Him or our families or our devotions.

v 4-9. The most important thing about this list of materials is that they were to be given from a willing heart, and not as the woman who put a quarter into the plate and said, “I don’t give much but I give willingly!” Cheerful, liberal giving, 2 Cor. 9:6,7.

v 10-19 Those to whom God has given ability are to work on what will be these finished products, from perfumes to garments, curtains, tent pegs. The furnishings all have staves for carrying except the lamp stand, which Josephus says was bagged and carried on a pole. Everything was to be complete, the brazen altar with it’s grate, staves and vessels, and both the laver and the foot for catching the used water.

v 20-24. The people left and as soon as they could, all who were willing brought all the kinds of things requested. These would be things given by the Egyptians the night of the Exodus. Even the big planks must have been carried out, maybe as litters.

v 25-29. Probably most of the people gave. The women were especially efficient with the yarns and cloth, and the rulers contributed some of the most expensive items.

v 30-35. Bezalel and Oholiab had been announced to Moses in 31:1. Now Moses tells the people that God has given those men special wisdom in all workmanship and teaching, so the people will be willing to learn and work under them.
