KING JAMES BIBLE

1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

2Make thee two trumpets of silver; of a whole piece shalt thou make them: that thou mayest use them for the calling of the assembly, and for the journeying of the camps.

3And when they shall blow with them, all the assembly shall assemble themselves to thee at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

4And if they blow but with one trumpet, then the princes, which areheads of the thousands of Israel, shall gather themselves unto thee.

5When ye blow an alarm, then the camps that lie on the east parts shall go forward.

6When ye blow an alarm the second time, then the camps that lie on the south side shall take their journey: they shall blow an alarm for their journeys.

7But when the congregation is to be gathered together, ye shall blow, but ye shall not sound an alarm.

8And the sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow with the trumpets; and they shall be to you for an ordinance for ever throughout your generations.

9And if ye go to war in your land against the enemy that oppresseth you, then ye shall blow an alarm with the trumpets; and ye shall be remembered before the LORD your God, and ye shall be saved from your enemies.

10Also in the day of your gladness, and in your solemn days, and in the beginnings of your months, ye shall blow with the trumpets over your burnt offerings, and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings; that they may be to you for a memorial before your God: I am the LORD your God.

11And it came to pass on the twentieth day of the second month, in the second year, that the cloud was taken up from off the tabernacle of the testimony.

12And the children of Israel took their journeys out of the wilderness of Sinai; and the cloud rested in the wilderness of Paran.

13And they first took their journey according to the commandment of the LORD by the hand of Moses.

14In the first place went the standard of the camp of the children of Judah according to their armies: and over his host was Nahshon the son of Amminadab.

15And over the host of the tribe of the children of Issachar wasNethaneel the son of Zuar.

18And the standard of the camp of Reuben set forward according to their armies: and over his host was Elizur the son of Shedeur.

19And over the host of the tribe of the children of Simeon wasShelumiel the son of Zurishaddai.

20And over the host of the tribe of the children of Gad was Eliasaph the son of Deuel.

21And the Kohathites set forward, bearing the sanctuary: and the other did set up the tabernacle against they came.

22And the standard of the camp of the children of Ephraim set forward according to their armies: and over his host was Elishama the son of Ammihud.

23And over the host of the tribe of the children of Manasseh wasGamaliel the son of Pedahzur.

24And over the host of the tribe of the children of Benjamin wasAbidan the son of Gideoni.

25And the standard of the camp of the children of Dan set forward, which was the rereward of all the camps throughout their hosts: and over his host was Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai.

26And over the host of the tribe of the children of Asher was Pagiel the son of Ocran.

27And over the host of the tribe of the children of Naphtali was Ahira the son of Enan.

28Thus were the journeyings of the children of Israel according to their armies, when they set forward.

29And Moses said unto Hobab, the son of Raguel the Midianite, Moses' father in law, We are journeying unto the place of which the LORD said, I will give it you: come thou with us, and we will do thee good: for the LORD hath spoken good concerning Israel.

30And he said unto him, I will not go; but I will depart to mine own land, and to my kindred.

31And he said, Leave us not, I pray thee; forasmuch as thou knowest how we are to encamp in the wilderness, and thou mayest be to us instead of eyes.

32And it shall be, if thou go with us, yea, it shall be, that what goodness the LORD shall do unto us, the same will we do unto thee.

33And they departed from the mount of the LORD three days' journey: and the ark of the covenant of the LORD went before them in the three days' journey, to search out a resting place for them.

34And the cloud of the LORD was upon them by day, when they went out of the camp.

35And it came to pass, when the ark set forward, that Moses said, Rise up, LORD, and let thine enemies be scattered; and let them that hate thee flee before thee.

36And when it rested, he said, Return, O LORD, unto the many thousands of Israel

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 The LORD said to Moses:

2 "Make two trumpets of beaten silver, which you shall use in assembling the community and in breaking camp.

3 When both are blown, the whole community shall gather round you at the entrance of the meeting tent;

4 but when one of them is blown, only the princes, the chiefs of the troops of Israel, shall gather round you.

5 When you sound the first alarm, those encamped on the east side shall set out;

6 when you sound the second alarm, those encamped on the south side shall set out; when you sound the third alarm, those encamped on the west side shall set out; when you sound the fourth alarm, those encamped on the north side shall set out. Thus shall the alarm be sounded for them to depart.

7 But in calling forth an assembly you are to blow an ordinary blast, without sounding the alarm.

8 "It is the sons of Aaron, the priests, who shall blow the trumpets; and the use of them is prescribed by perpetual statute for you and your descendants.

9 When in your own land you go to war against an enemy that is attacking you, you shall sound the alarm on the trumpets, and the LORD, your God, will remember you and save you from your foes.

10 On your days of celebration, your festivals, and your new-moon feasts, you shall blow the trumpets over your holocausts and your peace offerings; this will serve as a reminder of you before your God. I, the LORD, am your God."

11 In the second year, on the twentieth day of the second month, the cloud rose from the Dwelling of the commandments.

12 The Israelites moved on from the desert of Sinai by stages, until the cloud came to rest in the desert of Paran.

13 The first time that they broke camp at the bidding of the LORD through Moses,

14 the camp of the Judahites, under its own standard and arranged in companies, was the first to set out. Nahshon, son of Amminadab, was over their host,

15 and Nethanel, son of Zuar, over the host of the tribe of Issachar,

16 and Eliab, son of Helon, over the host of the tribe of Zebulun.

17 Then, after the Dwelling was dismantled, the clans of Gershon and Merari set out, carrying the Dwelling.

18 The camp of the Reubenites, under its own standard and arranged in companies, was the next to set out, with Elizur, son of Shedeur, over their host,

19 and Shelumiel, son of Zurishaddai, over the host of the tribe of Simeon,

20 and Eliasaph, son of Reuel, over the host of the tribe of Gad.

21 The clan of Kohath then set out, carrying the sacred objects for the Dwelling, which was to be erected before their arrival.

22 The camp of the Ephraimites next set out, under its own standard and arranged in companies, with Elishama, son of Ammihud, over their host,

23 and Gamaliel, son of Pedahzur, over the host of the tribe of Manasseh,

24 and Abidan, son of Gideoni, over the host of the tribe of Benjamin.

25 Finally, as rear guard for all the camps, the camp of the Danites set out, under its own standard and arranged in companies, with Ahiezer, son of Ammishaddai, over their host,

26 and Pagiel, son of Ochran, over the host of the tribe of Asher,

27 and Ahira, son of Enan, over the host of the tribe of Naphtali.

28 This was the order of departure for the Israelites, company by company. As they were setting out,

29 Moses said to his brother-in-law Hobab, son of Reuel the Midianite, "We are setting out for the place which the LORD has promised to give us. Come with us, and we will be generous toward you, for the LORD has promised prosperity to Israel."

30 But he answered, "No, I will not come. I am going instead to my own country and to my own kindred."

31 Moses said, "Please, do not leave us; you know where we can camp in the desert, and you will serve as eyes for us.

32 If you come with us, we will share with you the prosperity the LORD will bestow on us."

33 They moved on from the mountain of the LORD, a three days' journey, and the ark of the covenant of the LORD which was to seek out their resting place went the three days' journey with them.

34 And when they set out from camp, the cloud of the LORD was over them by day.

35 Whenever the ark set out, Moses would say, "Arise, O LORD, that your enemies may be scattered, and those who hate you may flee before you."

36 And when it came to rest, he would say, "Return, O LORD, you who ride upon the clouds, to the troops of Israel."

COMMENTARIE

1 to 10 The Silver Trumpets

Not to be confused with the shophar, a ram’s or cow’s horn

Chaper 1 verse 1 to chap 10 verse 10 brings the people are ready to proceed, in Ex 19-24 had brought the people to Sinai and the remainder of the book, chap 25-40 had taken up in great detail the setting up of the tabernacle.
v 1-10. Two silver trumpets were made for Aaron and sons for assembling of the camp and signaling a journey. The signals were: One trumpet-assemble the princes, one alarm-east part of camp moves, two alarms-south side moves on, (apparently the same for the other camps journey) trumpets blown in short, sharp tones but no alarm-congregation assembles, blow alarm before going forth to war in the land, and trumpets also to be blown in times of joy, solemn days, and beginning of months over the various offerings to keep them a memorial before the Lord. Sounds of the horn was used in v9 and

v10 in the days of settlement in Canaan.

VERSE 11 TO CHAP 20 VERSE 13 FROM MOUNT SINAI TO KADESH

11 to 28 Departure from Sinai

v 11-13. On the first day of the first month of the second year the tabernacle was set up. Passover and related activities took place on the 14th day of the first month. Numbering was done on the first day of the second month. The passover for those missed was on the 14th day of the second month. Now, on the 20th day, they move on. Num 10:14-28 has the marching order, Num. 2-3 has arrangement within the campsite

A comment on tribal, camp and family ensigns. Moses placed the serpent on a pole as an ensign for people to look to. Christ was lifted up on the cross, Jn. 3:14, as an ensign to draw all men to Him, Jn. 12:32. Preaching the gospel is to lift up an ensign, Isa. 11:10, 12.
It should be noted that 10:17 and 21 are not in conflict with Num. 2:17. Carriers of the tabernacle, the men of Gershon and Merari, followed Judah to get the tabernacle set up, but their families followed the camp of Reuben with the Kohathites who didn’t need to get there until it was. The ark was centered in a safe and honorable part of the camp and the march. That Ephraim followed the ark immediately is verified in Ps. 80:2, where the ark is called “His strength”, Ps. 132:8. They all move forward till the ark rests where the cloud pillar has stopped, in this case, three days journey, v 33. The ark remained in the midst of the camp all the time except when crossing the Jordan, Josh. 3 and 4, where it was one half mile before, then behind the people. But Joshua 6:7, it was again in the midst.

29 to 36 Leaving the Mountain of Jehovah

v 29-32. Moses’ father-in-law had left Sinai at Ex. 18:27, but as they prepare to move on, his son, Moses’ brother-in-law is asked to go along. He at first declines Moses’ invitation to go with them, and prefers to go back to his own people. Moses tries to persuade him because of his usefulness to them and invites him to share in the Lord’s blessings. Apparently he continued on with them, because his descendants lived in Canaan, Jud. 1:16; 1 Sam. 15:6. This did not affect Moses’ trust in the Lord as some claim, but Hobab was a useful helper provided by the Lord.

v 33-36. After three days of following the cloud (stopping at night), the first stop was the wilderness of Paran. Saying the ark “went before them” only meant it was still in their midst, but before the most of the people. When Moses started out he gave a battle cry, v 36, which was perhaps used later. At the end of the day he asked the Lord’s care through the night.
