KING JAMES BIBLE

1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

2 Send thou men, that they may search the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel: of every tribe of their fathers shall ye send a man, every one a ruler among them.

3And Moses by the commandment of the LORD sent them from the wilderness of Paran: all those men were heads of the children of Israel.

4And these were their names: of the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur.

5Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori.

6Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh.

7Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph.

8Of the tribe of Ephraim, Oshea the son of Nun.

9Of the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu.

10Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi.

11Of the tribe of Joseph, namely, of the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi.

12Of the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli.

13Of the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael.

14Of the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi.

15Of the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi.

16These are the names of the men which Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Oshea the son of Nun Jehoshua.

17And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said unto them, Get you up this way southward, and go up into the mountain:

18And see the land, what it is; and the people that dwelleth therein, whether they be strong or weak, few or many;

19And what the land is that they dwell in, whether it be good or bad; and what cities they be that they dwell in, whether in tents, or in strong holds;

20And what the land is, whether it be fat or lean, whether there be wood therein, or not. And be ye of good courage, and bring of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the time of the firstripe grapes.

21So they went up, and searched the land from the wilderness of Zin unto Rehob, as men come to Hamath.

22And they ascended by the south, and came unto Hebron; where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)

23And they came unto the brook of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bare it between two upon a staff; and they brought of the pomegranates, and of the figs.

24The place was called the brook Eshcol, because of the cluster of grapes which the children of Israel cut down from thence.

25And they returned from searching of the land after forty days.

26And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and shewed them the fruit of the land.

27And they told him, and said, We came unto the land whither thou sentest us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.

28Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, and very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there.

29The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south: and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains: and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Jordan.

30And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.

31But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.

32And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature.

33And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.

33And there we saw the giants, the sonnes of Anak, which come of the giants: and wee were in our owne sight as grashoppers, and so wee were in their sight.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 The LORD said to Moses,

2 "Send men to reconnoiter the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. You shall send one man from each ancestral tribe, all of them princes."

3 So Moses dispatched them from the desert of Paran, as the LORD had ordered. All of them were leaders among the Israelites;

4 by name they were: Shammua, son of Zaccur, of the tribe of Reuben;

5 Shaphat, son of Hori, of the tribe of Simeon;

6 Caleb, son of Jephunneh, of the tribe of Judah;

7 Igal (son of Joseph), of the tribe of Issachar;

8 Hoshea, son of Nun, of the tribe of Ephraim;

9 Palti, son of Raphu, of the tribe of Benjamin;

10 Gaddiel, son of Sodi, of the tribe of Zebulun;

11 Gaddi, son of Susi, of the tribe of Manasseh, for the Josephites, with

12 Ammiel, son of Gemalli, of the tribe of Dan;

13 Sethur, son of Michael, of the tribe of Asher;

14 Nahbi, son of Vophsi, of the tribe of Naphtali;

15 Geuel, son of Machi, of the tribe of Gad.

16 These are the names of the men whom Moses sent out to reconnoiter the land. But Hoshea, son of Nun, Moses called Joshua.

17 In sending them to reconnoiter the land of Canaan, Moses said to them, "Go up here in the Negeb, up into the highlands,

18 and see what kind of land it is. Are the people living there strong or weak, few or many?

19 Is the country in which they live good or bad? Are the towns in which they dwell open or fortified?

20 Is the soil fertile or barren, wooded or clear? And do your best to get some of the fruit of the land." It was then the season for early grapes.

21 So they went up and reconnoitered the land from the desert of Zin as far as where Rehob adjoins Labo of Hamath.

22 Going up by way of the Negeb, they reached Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, descendants of the Anakim, were living. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)

23 They also reached the Wadi Eshcol, where they cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes on it, which two of them carried on a pole, as well as some pomegranates and figs.

24 It was because of the cluster the Israelites cut there that they called the place Wadi Eshcol.

25 After reconnoitering the land for forty days they returned,

26 met Moses and Aaron and the whole community of the Israelites in the desert of Paran at Kadesh, made a report to them all, and showed them the fruit of the country.

27 They told Moses: "We went into the land to which you sent us. It does indeed flow with milk and honey, and here is its fruit.

28 However, the people who are living in the land are fierce, and the towns are fortified and very strong. Besides, we saw descendants of the Anakim there.

29 Amalekites live in the region of the Negeb; Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites dwell in the highlands, and Canaanites along the seacoast and the banks of the Jordan."

30 Caleb, however, to quiet the people toward Moses, said, "We ought to go up and seize the land, for we can certainly do so."

31 But the men who had gone up with him said, "We cannot attack these people; they are too strong for us."

32 So they spread discouraging reports among the Israelites about the land they had scouted, saying, "The land that we explored is a country that consumes its inhabitants. And all the people we saw there are huge men,

33 veritable giants (the Anakim were a race of giants); we felt like mere grasshoppers, and so we must have seemed to them."

The Spies Sent Out: Their Report

v 1-3. The Israelites finally came to the great oasis at Kedesh-barnea near the southernmost boundary of the promised land. In response to the Lord’s command, v 1 and peoples request, Deut. 1:23, Moses was pleased to send out spies. Some say they were lighting a candle to see sunshine, as all the promises of God were directed here. He expects us to follow in faith, but neither did God rebuke them. Knowledge of the country would be wise to them. Thus, the Lord commanded Moses to send a ruler, a prominent man from every tribe, except Levi, to spy out the land. Moses sent them out as commanded, and if God didn’t rebuke him, why should we?

From Paran Moses sends twelve spies, one for each tribe, Joshua and Caleb representing the tribes of Ephraim and Judah respectively . They went as far north as Hamath and in forty days they return. Ten of them bring back unfavorable account of the land. Disagreement among the people that the people were about to stone Moses and Aaron, when the glory of Jehovah appears and punish the people. The ten who brought back the unfavorable account died on the spot, and all of the people twenty years old or more (except Caleb and Joshua) should die by remain in the wilderness forty years.

v 4-16. This lists the name of the man from each tribe, Ephraim and Manasseh, sons of Joseph are in place of Joseph and Levi. Moses changes the name Hoshea, v 8, meaning salvation, to Joshua, v 16, meaning, Jehovah is salvation.

v 17-20. Moses told them to go up by way of the Negev, the southern areas, up into the mountains of the promised land. They were to determine the strength of the people and their defenses, as well as the fertility of the land. Compare our pioneers seeking to settle where there was plenty of wood and water. They were also to bring back a sample of the crops. They left in August at time of first crop of grapes, but their return would be September, when second crops were ripe.

v 21- 25. The spies traveled the length of the land clear to Rehob, which is on the road to Hamath, northeast of the sea of Galilee, apparently coming back to the Galilee area from the east. Then they returned back through valley of Eshcol near Hebron, where they picked the giant grape cluster. Eshcol means cluster. The trip took forty days, which is consistent with other forty unit periods of testing.

v 26-29. Apparently the spies made their report publicly. They admitted the great fruitfulness of the land, but warned about the walled cities and giant inhabitants.

v 30-33. This must have been upsetting to the people because Caleb quieted the people and urged going up at once, they would well be able to overcome them. Ten of the spies, not Joshua, insisted in fear that they would not be able to go up against such a strong people who devoured each other in wars, and that they were as grasshoppers before the giants. They completely laid aside their trust in the Lord.

Amorite a were dwellers in Canaan; farther north were the Canaanites, Amalek: they were a tribe living on the edge of the desert. They were a very dangerous tribe (1st Sam 30:1) Many of the Hattiles had settled in Palestine (Gen 23:10- 26:34) with their chief seat in Asia Minor. In the neighborhood of aJerusalem lived the Jebusiles ( 2nd Sam 5:6)
