3And ye shall give her unto Eleazar the priest, that he may bring her forth without the camp, and one shall slay her before his face:

4And Eleazar the priest shall take of her blood with his finger, and sprinkle of her blood directly before the tabernacle of the congregation seven times:

5And one shall burn the heifer in his sight; her skin, and her flesh, and her blood, with her dung, shall he burn:

6And the priest shall take cedar wood, and hyssop, and scarlet, and cast it into the midst of the burning of the heifer.

7Then the priest shall wash his clothes, and he shall bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he shall come into the camp, and the priest shall be unclean until the even.

8And he that burneth her shall wash his clothes in water, and bathe his flesh in water, and shall be unclean until the even.

9And a man that is clean shall gather up the ashes of the heifer, and lay them up without the camp in a clean place, and it shall be kept for the congregation of the children of Israel for a water of separation: it is a purification for sin.

10And he that gathereth the ashes of the heifer shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: and it shall be unto the children of Israel, and unto the stranger that sojourneth among them, for a statute for ever.

11He that toucheth the dead body of any man shall be unclean seven days.

12He shall purify himself with it on the third day, and on the seventh day he shall be clean: but if he purify not himself the third day, then the seventh day he shall not be clean.

13Whosoever toucheth the dead body of any man that is dead, and purifieth not himself, defileth the tabernacle of the LORD; and that soul shall be cut off from Israel: because the water of separation was not sprinkled upon him, he shall be unclean; his uncleanness isyet upon him.

14This is the law, when a man dieth in a tent: all that come into the tent, and all that is in the tent, shall be unclean seven days.

15And every open vessel, which hath no covering bound upon it, isunclean.

16And whosoever toucheth one that is slain with a sword in the open fields, or a dead body, or a bone of a man, or a grave, shall be unclean seven days.

17And for an unclean person they shall take of the ashes of the burnt heifer of purification for sin, and running water shall be put thereto in a vessel:

18And a clean person shall take hyssop, and dip it in the water, and sprinkle it upon the tent, and upon all the vessels, and upon the persons that were there, and upon him that touched a bone, or one slain, or one dead, or a grave:

19And the clean person shall sprinkle upon the unclean on the third day, and on the seventh day: and on the seventh day he shall purify himself, and wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and shall be clean at even.

20But the man that shall be unclean, and shall not purify himself, that soul shall be cut off from among the congregation, because he hath defiled the sanctuary of the LORD: the water of separation hath not been sprinkled upon him; he is unclean.

21And it shall be a perpetual statute unto them, that he that sprinkleth the water of separation shall wash his clothes; and he that toucheth the water of separation shall be unclean until even.

1 The LORD said to Moses and Aaron:

2 "This is the regulation which the law of the LORD prescribes. Tell the Israelites to procure for you a red heifer that is free from every blemish and defect and on which no yoke has ever been laid.

3 This is to be given to Eleazar the priest, to be led outside the camp and slaughtered in his presence.

4 Eleazar the priest shall take some of its blood on his finger and sprinkle it seven times toward the front of the meeting tent.

5 Then the heifer shall be burned in his sight, with its hide and flesh, its blood and offal;

6 and the priest shall take some cedar wood, hyssop and scarlet yarn and throw them into the fire in which the heifer is being burned.

7 The priest shall then wash his garments and bathe his body in water. He remains unclean until the evening, and only afterward may he return to the camp.

8 Likewise, he who burned the heifer shall wash his garments, bathe his body in water, and be unclean until evening.

9 Finally, a man who is clean shall gather up the ashes of the heifer and deposit them in a clean place outside the camp. There they are to be kept for preparing lustral water for the Israelite community. The heifer is a sin offering.

10 He who has gathered up the ashes of the heifer shall also wash his garments and be unclean until evening. This is a perpetual ordinance, both for the Israelites and for the aliens residing among them.

11 "Whoever touches the dead body of any human being shall be unclean for seven days;

12 he shall purify himself with the water on the third and on the seventh day, and then he will be clean again. But if he fails to purify himself on the third and on the seventh day, he will not become clean.

13 Everyone who fails to purify himself after touching the body of any deceased person, defiles the Dwelling of the LORD and shall be cut off from Israel. Since the lustral water has not been splashed over him, he remains unclean: his uncleanness still clings to him.

14 "This is the law: When a man dies in a tent, everyone who enters the tent, as well as everyone already in it, shall be unclean for seven days;

15 likewise, every vessel that is open, or with its lid unfastened, shall be unclean.

16 Moreover, everyone who in the open country touches a dead person, whether he was slain by the sword or died naturally, or who touches a human bone or a grave, shall be unclean for seven days.

17 For anyone who is thus unclean, ashes from the sin offering shall be put in a vessel, and spring water shall be poured on them.

18 Then a man who is clean shall take some hyssop, dip it in this water, and sprinkle it on the tent and on all the vessels and persons that were in it, or on him who touched a bone, a slain person or other dead body, or a grave.

19 The clean man shall sprinkle the unclean on the third and on the seventh day; thus purified on the seventh day, he shall wash his garments and bathe his body in water, and in the evening he will be clean again.

20 Any unclean man who fails to have himself purified shall be cut off from the community, because he defiles the sanctuary of the LORD. As long as the lustral water has not been splashed over him, he remains unclean.

21 This shall be a perpetual ordinance for you. "One who sprinkles the lustral water shall wash his garments, and anyone who comes in contact with this water shall be unclean until evening.

22 Moreover, whatever the unclean person touches becomes unclean itself, and anyone who touches it becomes unclean until evening."

v 1,2. The purpose of this chapter is to show how contamination could occur, and what to do for ceremonial cleansing. This involved a unique thing, the ordinance of the red heifer. (Couldn’t have even 1 or 2 white or black hairs) Red typified the blood, and she was to be unblemished and never worked. Lev. 11-15 concerns how to deal with uncleanness from a variety of sources. This chapter has to do with uncleanness from contact with a dead body, possibly prompted by the number of deaths due to rebellion.

v 3-10. Rules involved Eleazar taking the heifer outside the camp to be slain by someone. With his finger Eleazar sprinkled blood toward the tabernacle seven times, but she is to be totally burned in his sight. He casts cedar wood, hyssop and scarlet into the midst of the burning heifer, then he washes his clothes and bathes before entering camp, and is unclean until evening. The one who does the burning is to do the same. The clean person who gathers the ashes for water of separation and places them in a clean place outside the camp apparently has the same rule for cleansing.

 

 

v 11-13. One unclean by a dead human body is unclean seven days. The third day he is to purify himself by being sprinkled with the water of separation and the seventh day be clean, but if he doesn’t purify himself the third day, he remains unclean and is to be cut off, put to death.

 

 

 

v 14,15. Anyone entering the tent where is a dead man is unclean seven days and any vessel without a lid in there is unclean. These rules would prevent Israelites practicing mummification as the Egyptians did.

v 16. Any contact with the dead in the open, even a bone or a grave makes one unclean seven days. This is why all graves near the road were marked with white paint in the week before the passover. Hence Jesus term, whited sepulchers, Matt. 23:27.

v 17. This is how the water is prepared, by taking some ashes from the heifer and mixing them in a vessel of spring water.

v 18,19. A clean person using hyssop would sprinkle the tent and vessels in it. He would sprinkle the unclean person on the third and seventh days, then that person would wash his clothes, bathe and be unclean until that seventh evening. Someone has said that sprinkling the blood on the third day may speak of Christ’s resurrection on the third day, so we are clean in Him. But we still have the imperfections of this life until after the seventh day, eternity.

v 20. The person who refused to purify himself in this manner remained unclean, and if he approached the tabernacle, was to be cut off by death.

v 21,22. The one who sprinkled the water was unclean until evening, anyone touching the water was unclean until evening, anything the unclean person touched was unclean, and anyone that touched what an unclean person touched was unclean until evening. These rules were to be perpetual. It is interesting that the one sprinkled was cleansed, the one sprinkling was mad unclean.
This sprinkling represents the blood of Christ, the blood of sprinkling, Heb. 12:24. Schofield bibles have an extensive note on 19:2. I will just say that water represents the Holy Spirit and the Word. The Holy Spirit uses the Word to convict us of sin so that we can confess it and be forgiven and cleansed, 1 Jn. 1:9.
